Shrink Datafiles for database in Avalability Group
We're running SharePoint 2010 on SQL Server 2012. We are also using Availability Groups for all databases (Primary and Secondary replica). I'm running low on space and would like to shrink the datafiles for one of the content
databases. The content database has 2 datafiles spread across 2 LUNS. The SharePoint content database had a run away situation that caused the database to grow very large. The situation has been corrected and the database now has about 98%
free space. The database will not grow much larger than it is now. I know shrinking datafiles is generally not a good idea, but in the case I think it's appropriate.
My question is, has anyone done this before on a database/datafiles that are in a High Availability Group? Are there any risks? Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Hi,
SharePoint content database is different than the ordinary database . You need to test the effect in the test environment before making the changes to the product environment.
There is a good article regarding Database Maintenance for SharePoint
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262731(v=office.14).aspx#DBMaintenanceForSPS2010_ShrinkingDataFiles
Only perform shrink operations rarely, and only after you perform an operation that removes a lot of data from a database, and then only when you do not expect to use that free space again.
Because shrinking causes index fragmentation, do not shrink database files regularly. Instead, shrink database files only in response to large quantities of unused space that appear as a result of operations that significantly impact the
relative amount of used space in a database. If at all possible, avoid shrinking a database.
However, if you must shrink a database, use the following guidelines:
•Do not auto-shrink databases or configure a maintenance plan that programmatically shrinks your databases.
•Shrink a database only when users or administrators remove 50% or more of the content and you do not expect to reuse the unused space.
•Shrink only content databases. Users and administrators do not delete enough data from the configuration database, Central Administration content database, and various service application
databases to contain significant free space.
•Shrinking databases is an extremely resource-intensive operation. Therefore, if you absolutely must shrink a database, carefully consider when you schedule the shrink operation.
•After you shrink a database, the indexes in that database are fragmented. Use ALTER INDEX… REORGANIZE to address the fragmentation. If you are not configured to allow instant file initialization,
shrink the database to a target size that accommodates the size required for the near-term growth that you expect. For more information, see
Database File Initialization.
Thanks.

Is it ok to set "auto shrink" ON for reportserver and reportserverTempDB database?
Is it ok to set "auto shrink" ON for the reportserver and reportserverTempDB databases?
I have read multiple 'best practice' advice articles to not se 'auto shrink' to true, and I understand the potential issue with index fragmentation, but I percieve this advice is for user created application databases and not for the ReportServer and
reportserverTempDB databases.Hello Tom,
Could you put it on - sure. Should you put it on - (My personal opinion is) never.
There is more to it than just fragmenting indexes.
About every half an hour or so the internal information kept about the database will be used to figure out if it should and can shrink and to about what size. This might be great for overnight when no one is using it, but the first time new extents are needed
(since it just shrunk very small from no/light usage of reporting services) all requests will be halted until the data and log files grow. Basically you'll create a cycle of start->grow->stop->shrink->grow->shrink->grow->ad nausea. If
you don't want to waste the resources of constantly growing and shrinking (plus all of the stopping when it happens) then don't enable it. If you don't care or it's not a big deal, go ahead and enable it but I'm not quite sure why a few MB would make a big
difference?
The reporting server databases are still "user" databases, they are not special system databases.
Hope this helps.

ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 1 of thread 1
Hi
I'm restoring a database on a different host. I have the backups, from which I want to restore the database. I made the corresponding changes in the initSID.ora file and started the script to do the restore.These are the steps I followed:
connect target=/
run{
startup nomount;
allocate channel c1 type disk;
allocate channel c2 type disk;
allocate channel c3 type disk;
allocate channel c4 type disk;
restore controlfile from '/tmp_backups/rman/lev0_open_cf_SID_2826_1';
alter database mount;
set newname for all datafiles
restore database;
set until logseq = 29317 thread = 1;
switch datafile all;
recover database;
alter database open resetlogs;
One mistake I made here is that logseq should have been last seq+1, which I did not do. I have it as last seq.
Restore of datafiles and switching of datafiles was fine. But I get error for redo log files.
ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 1 of thread 1
ORA-00312: online log 1 thread 1: '/u13/oradata/SID/redo02a.log'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3
Why is it looking for at the old path yet?
I'm not sure what I missed and how to proceed. Please help.
Thanks,
MamataI do believe that set newname for all datafiles only means actual datafiles and no redo logs. So with open resetlogs, Oracle tries to create new redo logfiles where the backup controlfiles says they are.
As with creating a auxilliary database in another filesystem, we use DB_NAME_FILE_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT.
I am not sure if it is possible to type "set newname for all datafiles" and expect also the redo logfiles to change location.
You might try to set these two parameters and see if it works.
good luck.

ECCLOG1 data file has got 25GB initial size and growth was restricted to 10% (PROPOSED BY SAPInst)...
i'm assuming this error was due to lack of growth space for ECCLOG1 datafile...am i right? if so how much should i allocate memory for this log ? or is there any workaround ?
thanks in advanceKasu,
If SQL is complaining that the log file is full then the phase of the install that creates the SQL data/log files has already occurred (happens early in the install) and the install is importing programs, config and data into the db.
Look at the windows application event log for "Transaction log full" events to confirm.
To continue, in SQL Query analyzer try:
"Backup log [dbname] with truncate_only"
This will remove only inactive parts of the log and is safe when you don't require point-in-time recovery (which you don't during an install).
Then, go to the SQL Enterprise manager, choose the db in question and choose the shrink database function, choose to shrink only the transaction log file and the space made empty by the truncate will be removed from the file.
Change the recovery mode in SQL Server to "simple" so that the log file does not grow for the remainder of the install.
Make sure you change the recovery mode back to "full" after the install is complete.
Your transaction log appears to have filled the disk partition you have assigned to it.
25GB is huge for a transaction log and you would normally not see them grow this large if you are doing regular scheduled tlog backups (say every 30-60 minutes) because the log will truncate every time, but its not unusual to see one get big during an install, upgrade or when applying hotpacks.

DBCA can not use ASM for database storage due to following reason: Could no
Hi
I've a recently installed RAC11gR2(11.2.0.3) on HP-UX
I installed Grid Infrastructure with grid user:

It shows the chart in blank and if i try to write the disk group, so the following message appears: can not use ASM for database storage due to following reason: Could not connect to ASM due to following error: ORA-01034 ORACLE not available
What can be passing in this case... ?
Thanks in advanceThanks both
Really the problem initially was because of this:
[INS-06006] Passwordless SSH connectivity not set up between the following node(s): [node1, node2]. CVU may reports "PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user "user"" for same error
and I had to install node1 first and after node2 manually and perhaps for this the product was not well linked.
I resolved the problem establishing the keys with the wizard and after copying the following files from node1 to node2
/home/grid/.ssh -------> /home/grid/.ssh
authorized_keys
known_hosts
This is the procedure if you run the wizard at the node1.
The problem is that the wizard creates the keys incompletely...

The transaction log for database 'Test_db' is full due to 'LOG_BACKUP'
My dear All,
Came up with another issue:
App team is pushing the data from one Prod1 server 'test_1db' to another Prod2 server 'User_db' through a job, here while pushing the data after some duration job is failing and throwing the following error
'Error: 9002, Severity: 17, State: 2.'The transaction log for database 'User_db' is full due to 'LOG_BACKUP'''.
On Prod2 server 'User_db' log is having enough space 400gb on drive and growth is 250mb. I really confused that why job is failing as there is lot of space available. Kindly guide me to troubleshoot the issue as this issue is occuring from more than
1 week. Kindly refer the screenshot for the same.
Environment: SQL Server 2012 with sp1 Ent-edition. and log backup duration is every 15 mints and there is no High availability between the servers.
Note: Changing to simple recovery model may resolve but App team is required to run in Full recovery model as they need of log backups.
Thanks in advance,
Nagesh
NageshDear V,
Thanks for the susggestions.
I have followed some steps to resolve the issue, as of now my jobs are working without issue.
Steps:
Generating log backup for every 5 minutes
Increased the growth 500mb to unrestricted.
Once whole job completed we are shrinking the log file.

The transaction log for database 'SharePoint_Config' is full
Hi all ,
I am very new to sharepoint. when i tried to remove a wsp file from central administration i got the message like
The transaction log for database 'SharePoint_Config' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot
be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases.
Can anybody help me to solve this please. I saw one solution in net like this but i don't know how to do this. Can anybody help me how to do these steps please.
1.
Take the configuration database offline and detach it
2.
Copy the current MDF to a new location (to be used as a way of recovering the database if needed)
3.
Put the database back on-line, reattach it and then put it within simple mode (from full), with an aim of this stopping the database from
increasing in size
4.
Shrink the database and recover log space
5.
Should the shrinking fail, we'd look at detaching the database, making a sideways copy of the log file to another database
6.
We would then reattach the database, which should generate a new log file
Thank youHi Soumya,
I don't have any dba resource. And it is not a lab environment. It's Corporate environment.
Thanks alot for ur quick reply.
I normally don't just come onto the threads and tell people that they need a consultant, but you might want to look at getting a consultant to help make sure that your SharePoint environment is health and can be restored in the event of a server failure.
Based on the problem that you have described it might not be recoverable, or at least it might not be as recoverable as you want it to be.
At the very least you'll want to watch this video of my session at TechEd 2014 which talks about backups and how to set them up.

Sort+logical database using field group and extract
Hi Folks,
I have a program which is using Logical database concept and creating a file on application server as below.

FORM store_on_file USING daten.
IF hlp_temse CA par_dtyp. "Temse
PERFORM temse_schreiben USING daten.
ELSE.
TRANSFER daten TO g_name.
ENDIF.
ENDFORM.
Is Sorting concept different when it comes to logical databases and field groups ?
I had added a new field in the sort reguh-rzawe.I think due to that it is getting into AT NEW UBNKL and AT NEW UBKNT even though those details are same for the payment methods in the payment run.Even though the house bank number and account number is same for all the payment methods it is getting into AT NEW UBNKL and AT NEW UBKNT for every new payment method in the iteration.

K.Kiran.Read the documentation for the at-new process. As I recall the at-new considers the field named, and all the fields to the left of that in the table. With that in mind, look at how your logic will work. This could result in more, or fewer, breaks than intended(fewer if, for instance, a field to the left was deleted).

Rgds,The newly created database should automatically get picked up the maintenance plan.
http://sqlmag.com/sql-server/inside-database-maintenance-plans
No need to manually update the plan. I feel you need to have valid full backup for its successive Diff or Transaction log backup.
Are you getting any error in the job history?

ORA-19527 reported in Standby Database when starting Managed Recovery [ID 352879.1] -
Find datafile for a table (Urgent)
Is there a way to find a datafile for a non-partitioned table.
For examples
Table 'A' belong to tablespace 'T'
tablespace 'T' has 2 files 'F1' and 'F2' both in different filesystem in unix.
I need to run a huge load on table 'T'
I need to find which file system should have enough space for this load.
ThanksHere an example to find the file name and the size taken by the table:
SELECT a.name,sum(nvl(b.bytes/1024,0)) from dba_extents b, v$dbfile a
where b.owner='X'
and b.segment_name='A' and
b.file_id=a.file#
group by a.name

Standby Database ASM Disk Groups
Hi Guys
I wonder if anyone can tell me - does a standby database have to have an identical configuration for its ASM Disk Groups?
My production database has two disk groups, one for data and the other for temp. Can I get away with a single diskgroup in my standby database or would I need two of the same name as the production database?
Cheers
SimonHi Saml
I have been busy googling at the same time as discussing this and it would appear that it will use the db_file_name_convert:
http://asanga-pradeep.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/11gr2-standalone-data-guard-with-asm.html
The link above shows the output of someones RMAN session where the OMF names are changed automatically. Problem is that some people are recommending that the parameter not be used, so now I am really confused!
I think I will try the parameter, if it doesnt work or the duplicate fails I will drop the temp table space in production and then do the duplicate, then recreate the temp tablespace. I can do that because there will be no one on the system on Sunday when I do it.
Thanks again for your help - I will let you know how it goes.

Dear All,
My database server 11gR1 is running on Linux operating system. The disk where my database exists is almost 80% used. I need to shrink datafile, is there any such option available.
When i take dump of my database it is like 3.5 GB but the database size shown in the space summary of oracle enterprise manager is like 22 GB while the tablespace shows only 20% free space in it.
What is the best possible way to perform this function? Kindly help me. If there is anything else you need to know kindly ask.
Regards, Imran BaigIdentify which tablespace has grown big.
It could be the tablespace which hold application tables or undo datafiles or temp datafiles.
If it is the tablespace which hold the application data, find which object is big (from dba_segments).
It could be like some table is created with 15Gb storage space and contain only 1Gb of data.

Allocated space = 8534360064
Actual used space = 46874624
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.The COMS table was allocated around 8Gb but it has only 44Mb of data.
So in this case the space is wasted and you cannot resize the datafile as the space is already allocated to a table.
Identify these kind of objects and then either you can use the SHRINK SPACE command or re create the object with
only required storage space.
If all the the objects are small, then you should be able to resize the datafiles using the RESIZE command.
