Shuffle read/write error in ITunes

When accessing my IPod shuffle in ITunes I get an error message: can not read or write. I monitored my system with 'File Monitor' form sysinternals and saw that ipodService.exe was flippin... about 9.000 file I/O's. One of the files was c:/windows/setupapi.log, looking into it the follow message was repeated over and over.
#-198 Command line processed: "D:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe"
#-148 Loading coinstaller modules for "Disk drive".
#E358 An unsigned or incorrectly signed file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\SysSetup.Dll" for driver "Disk drive" blocked (server install). Error 0x800b0100: No signature was present in the subject.
#E161 Processing of call to class installer failed. Error 0x800b0100: No signature was present in the subject.
What does this mean? and better what to do about it. I can't change, delete or listen files from the ipod in ITunes now.
this is my second shuffle now. The one before died after recieving this kind of errors in ITunes. I think there is a serious BUG in the apple software for windows.

As far as I understand, libsonu.so references symbol named __f90_sslw located in some Fortran run-time support library (namely libfsu.so), but libsonu.so does not declare dependency on that library. This is actually common practice to put main executable in charge of loading all support libraries needed. If you linked your executable as a Fortran program using Fortran compiler (not linker), it should have dependency on libfsu and run-time linker should be able to locate __f90_sslw in it when it is requested by your library.
Please show us exact command line that you used to link you program (stripping real names is okay, of course).

  • IPod gets read/write error halfway through transfering songs

Ok, I posted the other day about a read write error on my iPod. I got it replaced. New one didn't work on my home computer but I did get it up and running on my laptop at work. When I got home I plugged the iPod into my home computer. Everthing was fine (I have it on manually update). When I tried to put music files on my iPod (drag and drop) I did one and it worked fine. Then I highlighted a group and dragged it over. They were transfering. Then halfway through I got the read write error.
Can anyone explain why this would happen? Why did it work for a little bit and then refuse to keep transfering songs? Do I have to do them one at a time when I manually update? I basically had to restore the iPod when I got to work this morning. Things are fine now. It would be a pain (but still bearable) if I can't use my iPod at home.

Can anyone explain why this would happen? Why did it work for a little bit and then refuse to keep transfering songs?
The problem could be one of mnay mentioned in the link below. A complete Reformat of the IPOD using Windows would be a great start and then "restore" the IPODs software. The drive on the IPOD seems to get corrupted at some point and this is the best way I have found to get rid of the problem.

  • Entourage read/write error

    Help,
Entourage will not startup I get a read/write error - when I try to rebuild the database both standard and advanced it gives me this error. I located my mail identities and its empty. How can I correct this problem?
    What is causing this?
    Thanks

I just posted this response to another user's query regarding an essentially identical problem:
This is a relatively frequent, recurring and ongoing problem for Entourage users. My advice is generally to migrate away from the application at your first opportunity, as it is prone to such data corruption issues. If that is not practical, you'll need to become an Entourage maintenance expert to reduce the likelihood of future problems, and you will need to back up regularly.
You'll find this site a great place to start when trying to deal with these issues:

Link segments four and five on this page may be particularly helpful, but you should read the entire document before attempting to recover or reconstruct your Entourage database.

  • Medium write error in itunes during "finishing" stage of disc

    Hi all,
Have been browsing the forums this morning in order to solve my above problem - medium write error during cd burning. I am using Verbatim CD-Rs on a macbook pro version 10.6.7. I have slowed the write speed down as suggested to 4x but it always seems to be that my macbook pro spits the CD out during the last "finishing" stage. Have tried a cd lense cleaner...that hasn't worked. Please help!
    Tom

I did try to burn 1st thing after a period of shutdown - twice.  No success.  First time, I tried with my "old" blank TDK media: medium write error @ just over 4 minutes remaining.  Second, after a shutdown, tried my "new" Verbatim blank media and got the same error, don't know the time as I wasn't watching.  I both cases, I left the computer idle during the burn.  And I add that I have successfully burned all of the (full) playlists I have been attempting to burn several times before, a year + ago, with no problems.
This problem has been around for YEARS, as is apparent from this and other forums, and seems worse or exclusive to burning CDs out of iTunes.  Does Apple just throw up their hands?  Would a visit to the Genius @ an Apple Store be worthwhile?

  • Sync problems after switch from Windows to Mac; cannot read/write error msg

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.
I recently switched from a PC to a Mac. To move my iTunes files (50GB) I simply dragged and dropped them from my external HD to my new computer. I know that Apple does not recommend this process, but when I needed to move my library between drivers earlier this year, it was the only way I could do it without getting an error message that killed the process.
Moving the files seemed to be a success. Everything appeared in iTunes, I was able to play the music, etc.
I then tried synching my iPod (Classic 160 GB – I think 5th gen, it’s about 3 years old) on the new computer. I got some message that said you can only have one iPod per account and that I would have to wipe the iPod before syncing. I let it do that.
    Here's where problems began:
With a few gigs to go in the sync I got a message that says something to the effect that iTunes cannot read or write to the iPod. Even though must of the library had been transferred to the iPod, before disconnecting the iPod iTunes wiped all but a few hundred megs worth of music from it. I've tried restoring the iPod a few times but that has had no effect. The first time I tried to sync the iPod it was formatted for Windows. I have reformatted it for Mac.
Also noteworthy is that the first 3/4ths of my library copies very quickly -- 1GB a minute -- but then it eventually slows down to where 100 MB takes 10 minutes. It copies the files in a different order every time, so it doesn't look like it's getting hung up on the same files every time.
In case I had a corrupted file, I deleted all the files added to the library since my last successful sync.
    Suggestions?
Should I just go to the nearest Apple store and beg for mercy?

    Hi!
same problem here.I can use around 30G of my iPod Classic 160G.If i try to upload more than that it will take very long time and finally freezes.

  • Read/Write errors with FileVault-protected folders

    Hi-
New to Mac OS, etc. I have been using the new MacBook Pro for about six weeks, and have now encountered my third show-stopper with a FileVault protected user profile. Each time has basically required a from-scratch removal and replacement of the user account. Now I can't ignore it, since I can't go through this again. Before you tell me (as so many websites do) to drop FileVault, I can't. I'm under a government mandate to encrypt "all user data." I'm open to other approaches, but this should "Just Work," no?
Over time, I start seeing various hiccups in accessing files. These seem to present as longer and longer beachballing inside applications which access the disk (oddly, Firefox seems to be the one most commonly affected; then Mail.app seems to have problems either with file locking, or with bits of one email showing up in another, or much more random lockups with beachballs...)
I have no idea how to troubleshoot... nothing obvious shows up in logs or console (ask me if you know of something in particular to look for.)
This time, I decided to copy the contents of the sparse disk image off to a backup before trying to disable FileVault, since that failed completely last time resulting in significant loss of data (mostly emails that had not yet been backed up). I can now reproduce a problem predictably ... looking for help. In trying to copy the entire contents of my user profile, I get about a few hundred megs (into an 18 GB sparse disk) and bump into a file copy error. It happens in the same file every time. I get a dialog in finder that says "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "xxx.mp3" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" xxx.mp3 is obviously a real file name, I've elided here.
Now, I try to copy the same file from the terminal using cp, to copy to some stable place like the root of the current (administrator) user's directory. In this case, the system goes somewhat nonresponsive -- big pause at the command line, other applications beachball, mouse works fine, but some parts of other applications non-responsive. Ctrl-C seems to work, after a time, and things go back to normal. "cat xxx.mp3" has the same response.
I have run the Disk Utilities over the sparse image in question, and they report nothing wrong or nothing to fix.
Help! The only comment I find on the support forums for error -36 has to do with SMB, not in the picture here.
    JA

As I stated earlier, "The -36 is an i/o error. This means either the file, the directory or the data sectors are damaged."
This message can be generated at the source end or at the destination end when you are copying a file.
The copy process can give the same message if it has trouble reading a damaged sector at the read location or when it tries to write a file to damaged sectors at the destination location.
You have told me that disk utility is telling you that the source directory and data sectors are fine.
Verify disk is not perfect. There are literally hundreds millions of sectors on a drive and it would take hours to check each sector so verify disk is usually an adequate scan but not infallible.
You say you have isolated the issue to corrupt files.
You are blaming the file corruption on file vault when that is not necessarily true.
That is why I had asked you to try to make a copy of the Mail folder to the desktop.
    The internal drive is verified.
If you had trouble with that copy I was going to go with data corruption.
The symptom you describe at the beginning was longer and longer processing times with a spinning cursor.
The main reason for that is some kind of conflict that doesn't allow processing to proceed/complete.
This can be due to page faults, permissions issues, font conflicts or corruption.
Open font book and choose all fonts.
Look in the second column and see if any of the fonts have a black dot to the right.
If they do then select a font in the second column go to the edit menu and select all.
Then select resolve duplicates from the edit menu.
Now with the second column still selected go to the file menu and select validate fonts.
Check to see that all fonts have a check marked circle.
Any fonts that have any other designation should have their box checked and the remove checked choice selected.
Data that you keep bringing back could be causing further corruption.
The data that you have saved can be saved on an external device if you end up having to zero your drive and reinstall.
You should then reinstall just the apple software that came with your computer and update.
Turn on file vault without bringing back in data or extra applications.
Then add applications one at a time if you are not having problems.
As to data safety you can encrypt the data stored on the external device by putting it in a folder(s) and choosing to create an encrypted disk image of it.
You do that in disk utility by selecting the folder and choosing new from the file menu.
The choose disk image from folder then choose image.
    Then encryption - then save.
You will still be able to unlock the encrypted disk image and get data you may need.
Document what you are adding back to the system if the cleanly reinstalled system is stable.

  • Help!  SAP-LSO - LSO-AE "A Read-Write Error Occurred when checking in the Object"

    Using version 14 of LSO-AE
    WBT publishes fine
Error occurs during check-in to Master Repository
It seems to be a 3rd party WBT created by the NTSB, so I only have the SCORM 1.2 package, no source files unfortunately.
Thanks in advance for any advice that is offered!

Figured it out.  Not that this forum helped!  But here is the answer should anyone else have a similar problem on check-in.  The standard setting for the LSO Repository is 100MB.  Trying to check in anything larger than this, caused the above error.  Increasing the configuration setting fixed the issue and allowed successful course check in without the above error.

Are you using exactly the same user name on the new mac as on the old mac?
"error code -36" is an I/O error. It could be caused by Library corruption and permission problems:
Try the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools and repair or rebuild your iPhoto Library before you try to transfer it.
To repair the iPhoto library with the First Aid tools:
Try to launch into the First Aid Tools  by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘ and clicking the iPhoto icon to launch iPhoto.
Keep the two buttons firmly held down, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.
Then select "Repair permissions" and repeat with  "Repair database".
    Now try again to transfer.

  • IPod video gives itunes the can't read or write error

I bought my iPod Video through the apple store shortly before Xmas. Since i was sepnding the holidays with my GF, she uses ugh windows. I formatted my ipod with windows, and got some songs on it and started using it.
When I came back, around 3 weeks ago, I cleared it to get it working in my powermac, but it gave me this read-write error, so i made a system restore and re-populated it with all my music, video's, contact info and calendar stuff.
Two days ago i got some new music, and (i also installed the dreaded 1.1 update), I tried to update my ipod with iTunes and i got this error in itunes saying it couldnt read or write to my ipod. Weird, I thought, but i restored it to factory settings. When I tried to import some music, it gave me the same error. Now I cant put any music at all!!!

  • Trying to restore and updater reads 'disk write error'

I've been trying to restore my ipod and anytime i get the updater to recognize it a 'disk write error' message comes up and something about firmware. any ideas?
      Windows XP

    Hi,
I've tried EVERYTHING in Apple's recommendations but I still get the "can't read/write" error on Photos only, not music (which works fine). I get the error if I select iPhoto in the selection bar of the iPod prefs in iTunes. If I switch the selection bar to "photo library" it will update photos, but it does ALL modified, originals, etc and NO iPhoto albums (which I painstakingly created!) There must be a way to fix this problem and it's not on the page you guys keep sending people to!

  • Unable to read/write to external FW drive

I have a LaCie external D2 drive and just noticed since I got a new MacBook Pro that I'm getting read/write error -36 when attempting to copy files to/from the disk.
The actual finding of the problem was on reinstalling and configuring Silverkeeper for backups. I've had problems with Silverkeeper in the past but was giving it one last chance before moving to Retrospect. When it failed I started to config Retrospect and when I set it to discover connected drives it didn't see the external harddrive but did see the internal & external DVD/CD burners. The external DVD/CD burner is also LaCie and was first in the firewire chain but even disconnecting it and connecting the external drive has no effect. So when neither backup program worked I tried an individual file copy from the internal to external drive and received the "error -36"
Do I need to format the drive to work with the MacPro or is this a permissions problem?
    K.

Has the drive ever been formatted? If not, then yes
you need to format the drive before you can use it.
Otherwise check with LaCie's technical support.
Yes, the drive has been formatted and was used with my old Powerbook for backup purposes. I forgot to mention that the drive does appear on the desktop when I boot up etc and I can open the Finder window on it and navigate the folders etc located on the drive. Just no read/write

  • Failed to update - disk write error (WinXP Pro)

These are the steps I performed to get my Nano in it's current state of displaying the contact "www.apple.com/support/ipod" error message.
When I bought it last November, the itunes on the CD was outdated and needed updating. Today, after a fresh install of WinXP, I decided to be "smart" and simply download the latest itunes for windows to save some steps.
After installing itunes and rebooting, I plugged the Nano in and discovered it was not recognized. (I hadn't realized the driver was not loaded when I install itunes)
I inserted the original CD and accepted the defaults - the nano was recognized and I could view the files via itunes.
I attempted to add a song - and received an error "disk write error" from itunes.
itunes informed me that my Nano needed an update, so I proceeded to download the updater - hoping that would fix things.
The updater errored our stating it had a write error also.
At this point, my Nano was now displaying the !folder error with the support url.
I have attempted to run the "restore" function of the updater and that fails to work also.
The battery in the ipod shows fully charged, and I have rebooted the PC numerous times and re-installed itunes twice.
I have attempted the "select+menu" reset and that just results in returning to the "!folder" error.
I have also tried forcing it into disk mode - which it is now in - this made no difference in the update attempt either.
Finally, the Nano does show up as a drive under windows, however, windows says it needs formatting, and so far I have declined to allow it to proceed.
Suggestions are much appreciated - I'm hoping it is not so badly screwed up I need to send it in for service/replacement.
