Shutdown by normal user

what permission should i give to a normal user to be able to shutdown?

AFAIK, there's no group for shutdown and poweroff commands. Your best bet is to set up sudo to allow the user to run the command without a password.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo
Once you've done that you can shut down with sudo <command>.  You can then use an alias in your .bashrc to make shutdown point to the sudo command:
alias poweroff='sudo poweroff'
etc

  • [SOLVED] DBUS boot problems - Mounting system devices as a normal user

I have the [testing] and [community-testing] repositories enabled. A few days ago, probably due to an update, I started having trouble mounting devices and the shutdown/reboot options don't show up anymore on the LXDE exit menu.
I use gvfs for mounting devices as a normal user with PCManFM or Thunar. The error message is "Authentication is required".
After some testing, I found out that by restarting dbus, I could start mounting devices again:
    /etc/rc.d/dbus restart
So my guess is that there's some problem with dbus startup. I have it in DAEMONS of rc.conf, as well as .xinitrc, the daemon seems to start correctly on boot, and it worked previously, so I have no idea of what could be wrong.
    My ~/.xinitrc:
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"

    I solved it.
The Wiki page for Mounting for normal users with PCManFM tells to create a "/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/55-myconf.pkla" file specifying the privileges to grant to the user. The problem is that it does not include the privilege needed to mount internal drives (which was what I was trying to mount). To fix it, I added:
    ;org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal
    To the "Action=..." line.
(Though I have no idea why it worked before it broke, or why restarting dbus after initializing my WM fixed it.)
As for the power issues, I've concluded that it was working, but restarting dbus after initializing my WM broke it (my bad for not checking it before restaring dbus). So it all works now.

    SQL>Anil,
Its not just that you have got the role of Sysdba ( or your user TEST) and you can shut down the db with that user. This priv is ONLY with the Sys user so what you need to do is to connect as Sys user ONLY to do this operation. You need to do some thing like this,
connect test/test as sysdbaWhich in real means, you are NOT connecting as TEST user but as Sys user only who can shut down the db. Normal users and even uses with DBA role are not authorized to shut down the db,makes sense , you don't want your users to shut down the db, even though they are dbas.

  • Running sbin commands as normal user

Here's the problem: I would like to run rc.d to start/restart/stop daemons as a normal user.
I ran into two possible workarounds:
    1. Sudoers file
I've setup sudoers file to not ask for the password with:
    myuser ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/rc.d
That of course still force me to write sudo before rc.d to start/restart/stop a daemon. Next step could be to create an alias like alias rc.d='sudo rc.d'.
    2. Permissions
Another way would be to change the permissions of the command so It can be ran by "all" or a specific group.
Maybe I'm just crazy, but all these workarounds look a bit "dirty" to me, so I was wondering if someone else knows a different approach to this issue :).

It still asks for my password when I ran an app through sudo, any clue of what would be happening?
That's just saying that you're allowed to use sudo, not that you can use it without a password.
For example when I run sudo -l
User me may run the following commands on this host:
    (ALL) ALL
    (ALL) ALL
    (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacman, (root) /usr/bin/pacdiffviewer, (root) /usr/bin/make, (root) /sbin/shutdown, (root) /usr/sbin/hddtemp, (root) /usr/bin/pacman-color, (root) /usr/sbin/pm-suspend
From my limited understanding (root) means that I become root user
AFAIK our configurations are almost the same, except from the fact that I have configured it to supposedly not ask for the password for every command and in your case of the commands listed there.
If you ran pacman with sudo, it asks your password?

  • Fingerprint utility is not working for normal users - Tecra M11

    Hi All,
I installed windows 7 pro in Tecra M11 laptop and the Toshiba finger print utility is not working for normal users.
It is working only for domain administrators. The TFPU is not working for, normal domain users, local users, local administrators. If we run the utility it will ask to enter the windows password and once we applied the password then the message saying "entered password is not valid" will prompt even if we are trying to use the utility first time.
If we try with a domain admin account it will work without any problem. Can somebody help me to trouble shoot this issue?
    Thanks.

People nowadays experienced that no matter How many times we glide our finger it have no response. In this instance, you might be very afraid of Windows password lost by reason that there is a plenty of important data on your PC.
Then what should you do? One choose is fix the Fingerprint scanners, but this method will cost a lot of money. The other is use the Windows password function to solve the problem. Certainly, this is a very safer, faster and easier to use method for you.
According my personal experience, you can try these three ways to re-access to your PC:
Method 1: Login with the default administrator account
    * Step 1: Start Windows PC
    * Step 2: When you can see the Windows login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys Twice and it'll show Classic Login box
    * Step 3: Type Administrator as Username and leave the password field blank
    * Step 4: Press the Enter Key and then you can be able to login the default windows administrator account which is it created by default when install windows.
*Note:* This trick is only work for Windows XP. And when you input the key combination Please don't put the cursor on any account. And if you change the name or password before, you cannot login by this way.
Method 2: Use the previous password reset disk
This method describes how to create and use a password reset disk for a computer that is a member of a domain. You can use a Windows password reset disk to gain access to your Microsoft Windows Professional-based computer if you forget your Windows password. Please click here to learn more.
Method 3: Using Windows Password Unlocker
Using Windows password remove software is could be the fastest and easiest way for you to reset your Windows password while you didn't create a password reset disk before.
There are 2 options for you: recover Windows password with a bootable CD/DVD or recover Windows password with a USB flash drive.
Before starting, a bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive and a computer with CD drive are required. (Internal CD drive and external CD drive are both OK.
Option 1: Recover Windows password by burning a bootable CD/DVD
Option 2: Recover Windows password by burning a USB flash drive
The whole Windows password recovery process can be divided to 3 big steps:
    * >> Step 1: Burn a USB flash drive to remove lost Windows password
    * >> Step 2: Set your target computer to boot from USB
    * >> Step 3: Recover forgotten Windows password with the burned USB flash drive
In fact, all you need is a *Windows Password Unlocker www.passwordunlocker.com/windows-password-recovery.html which can help you directly reset your windows xp password, and then you can login your XP without a password required. Of course, there are also some other ways to do it, but this way may be most convenient one.

Welcome to the forum: please read the FAQ and forum sticky threads (if you haven't done so already), and ensure you have updated with your profile with a real handle instead of "866673".
You'll get a faster, more effective response to your questions by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should usually include:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB version and edition
<li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener)
    <li>Browser(s)/version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Templates
    <li>Region type
(although for your question only the APEX version is necessary).
Assuming you mean a user who can authenticate to an application that uses Application Express Account Credentials?
    In APEX 4.0:
    1. Go to Home > Application Builder > [Your Application ] > Administration > Create Users and Groups > Create User
    2. Enter the User Identification information.
    3. In the Account Privileges, specify:
User is a workspace administrator: No
    User is a developer: No
    4. Complete the rest of the form as necessary.

  • Access denied when trying to use PDF printer as normal user

I have Acrobat 8 professional installed on a computer running Windows XP SP3. When i try to print a document to pdf from any program as Administrator it performs just fine. When i log on as a normal, restricted, user i get the window popup asking for a file name and location and whereever i try to save a file i get "access denied" error.
Users have right to write and modify in all of the folders i've tried to save to (desktop, my documents, custom made folders), but i think the problem is with the temp file being written to some system folder where restricted users don't have permission to write. Did anyone encounter a similar problem, and how did you solve it? What directories do the normal users need access to in order to perform printing.
    Thank You

The forum added some nice links and i found my answer here http://forums.adobe.com/message/1179199#1179199 - changed the registry key permissions and it's working like a charm. Thank you.

Please advice whether it would suffice a normal user who works in a management consulting industry with project presentation related software in work ? Thanks.

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well.  The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable.  Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
    Ciao.

  • XServer providers no longer available to normal users in S11

I haven't yet found a means of accessing Solaris 11's XServer probes as a normal user. My user has all dtrace privileges (dtrace_user,dtrace_proc,dtrace_kernel), but dtrace -l -n 'Xserver*' gives:
    pfexec dtrace -l -n 'Xserver*'
    ID PROVIDER MODULE FUNCTION NAME
dtrace: failed to match :::Xserver*: No probe matches description
The same command as root shows all Xserver probes.

Removed comment about sudo as an inferior alternative to pfexec. In this case they are both equivalent, this particular dtrace use-case seems to require uid=0.

There seems to be at least two options:
Add your user to the the /etc/sudoer file and sudo dtrace -l -n 'Xserver*'
    or
Add back the "Primary Administrator" role (or an equivalent role with uid=0) and grant this role to the user.
In many cases RBAC provides much more granular control of accesses and permissions than sudo, but in this example I'm using RBAC to run as UID 0 so if I do this by user instead of by file, I don't gain much advantage of using RBAC.
The fact that dtrace_kernel, dtrace_user and dtrace_proc are not sufficient for tracing Xorg does seem a bit strange. This may be because Xorg runs as root.

  • Allow normal user to run "ip link set"

    Hi,
every time I power on my wireless lan device by hardware switch I have to execute
    ip link set wlan0 up
as root in order to use it. There's a bash script which is triggered with normal user rights by the switch.
I'm member of the network group, but I can't use the bash script to run ip automatically:
    [drake@laptop ~]$ ip link set wlan0 up
    RTNETLINK answers: Operation not permitted
Is there a way to allow my account to set up wlan0?
    Thanks!
    Drake

    Good afternoon.
I believe we have a RFE for this issue our datebase. Namely:
Bug 18202: Allow to specify params in reports but prevent saving changes
If I may, I recommend that you open a support case and ask the responsible engineer to add your company's information to the RFE (once it's confirmed that the 2 issues are indeed the same). Doing so will increase the chances of this functionality being added to the product in a future release.
    Regards,
    Alex

  • [Solved] nm-applet does not display in normal user's panel

I installed Arch Linux yesterday. Today, I am trying to get some of the refinements working. I installed OpenBox as a standalone window manager. I got several things working exactly the way I wanted as root, such as networkmanager, nm-applet, and pypanel. When I startx as root, the nm-applet is properly displayed in the pypanel.
Then I discovered that I could not run an X application as the normal user without first running "xhost +" as root. At this point, it dawned on me that I am not supposed to run startx as root, but as the normal user. Duh!
So, I thought I set up everything the same way for the normal user. When I startx as the normal user, OpenBox runs, nm-applet runs, and pypanel runs, but pypanel does not display the nm-applet icon. I can now run my X application as the normal user, so that is good.
My .config/openbox/autostart file is exactly the same for root and my normal user:
    (sleep 3 && pypanel) &
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
nm-applet was started by this code, because ps -ef shows it running and owned by the normal user:
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep nm-applet
    tim 2311 2306 0 15:27 tty1 00:00:00 /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable
    tim 2332 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep nm-applet
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep networkmanager
    root 497 476 0 14:14 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action eth0
    root 869 476 0 14:30 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action ra0
    tim 2345 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep networkmanager
Why does pypanel display the nm-applet icon for root but not for the normal user?
Tim (newbie to Arch but previously ran ArchBang for six months)

I have now switched to tint2 from pypanel, anyway. It is much cleaner and easier to use. At least in my opinion.

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.
