Sick of Kernal panicks!

I've had my Intel mini for a week now and am sick to the back teeth of kernal panicks. I've tried to work out where the conflicts are but given up now! So I've done a complete erase and install and am now loathed to put any software onto this machine!
1) Is there a list of software that is and isn't compatable with the new system??
I know mac:office works but what about other software?
Sibelius? Peak LE?
3) What about Mac games? Which ones work?

It's most definitely something I've loaded onto it
yesterday - problem is I can't remember exactly what
I loaded.
Here's how i fixed the problem.
1. do a restart in safe mode --- Restart your mini and hold down the shift key .
2. go to System/Library/Extentions. Do a List view and sort by Date.
That will tell you what you put in on that day. I sent anything on that day to the trash can.
3. go to System/Library/StartupItems. Do a List view and sort by Date.
I sent anything on that day to the trash can.
4. Restart - Let your mini reboot and then do another restart.
From there evything was fine for ME.
Hope this helps.

  • Kernal panick after booting from SL install cd

    Hello,
So, today, I wanted to install Snow Leopard since I don't like Lion. But now, every time I try to install SL, the computer loads the cd and after a while, a kernal panick message appears.
    What should I do?

Are you using any USB/Firewire peripherals other than the mouse and keyboard? Have you upgraded the RAM?
If not, then you might have to take it to your nearest Apple store.

  • Kernal Panicking???

Well a few months ago I was experiencing some shut downs with my iMac. Everything would be running fine and then the screen would fade transparent black from top to bottom and a small window in the middle telling me to shut down the system, in a few different languages. After many restarts and PRAM resets it was back to shape. Then had hard drive problems and replaced that. Also replaced the ram and upgraded to 3gigs. Everything was fine again for a few months and today the screen froze again and same thing happened. I shut down and restart and the grey screen with apple logo appears and wheel spinning but after a few minutes the mac just shuts itself down. I can boot from disc and my HD shows up also so im sure my hd is fine. I called my local Mac support shop where i got my HD installed and they said it was kernal panicking and they would need to look at it and run tests to see what exactly the problem is.
I would like to know what you all thought this might be and what the average costs are to fix a problem like this?

Here is info about Kernal Panics.

  • Why is my mac kernal panicking on startup?

I start my Macbook Air, I see the Apple Logo, and then the spinning wheel.  Then about 10 seconds later it kernal panics. I was able to boot into safe mode, to be able to type this, haha.

  • Kernal Panic early in boot up.

Got myself a brand spankin new MBP 15in 2.4 the other day!
But, first time bootin the sucker up, got a kernal panic not 2 seconds into boot. Didn't even get past the white screen with the apple logo. Hm... Not a good sign... Especially when you're booting it up for the first time at the apple store
Ok, shut down, boot up again. Oh! Kernal panick again. Hmmmm... Shut down, boot up. No problems this time.
So I thought, well, I guess that's that.
Then just last night, tried booting up again, got the same kernal panic at early boot.
So I figure it's probably only when the computer is cold booting. Which seems to me like it would be some kind of hardware issue.
Good thing for me I got AppleCare after learning my lesson with a harddrive on a powerbook but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks of this just for my knowledge.
Laptop is sitting in my car right now, off, hopefully cold enough so that when I go to the Apple store later today it'll panic for the nice guys at the store.
By the way, this is the first product I got with AppleCare, am I supposed to set up some kind of appt. with them or can I just show up?

Well, I took it back to the store to get it exchanged, but they decided to run an Airport upgrade that apparently isn't released through software update... AirportExtremeUpdate2007004.dmg is the file.
So far, no kernal panics... and it's been 2 weeks. Granted, I don't shut down my computer often now that I've completely transferred from my old powerbook.
The laptop does freeze occasionally coming out of sleep, I don't think it's a related issue, but I'll search on it anyway.

  • Need help with kernal panic drive!

    Hi,
While I was erasing 10,000 items from my trash, my G5 Quad kernal panicked and when I restarted it kept kernal panicking. I brought the computer to the Apple Genius at the store and they basically found that the boot hard drive, (my main drive) was needed to be replaced. They have sent me a new drive but I need to send the old one back.
I have put the drive in a new firewire enclosure but when i hook it up to a computer and start it up, it make my computer kernal panick and I am not able to do anything with it.
I have Date Rescue II and was hoping I could recover some of the files. Will this be possible? Can I make it so the kernal panicking does not happen so I can attempt a rescue?
G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Hitachi 500GB Drives and 4 external fw seagates

Hi Brett and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could try Starting up in Safe Mode
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup
Safe boot may by-pass the problematic process/hardware (the airport card is a frequent culprit) and enable you to boot sufficiently to find out the OS. Click on the blue Apple top/left, then 'About this Mac'. If Safe Boot is successful take a look at Macintosh HD/Library/Logs, particularly Console and Panic. I'm no expert on deciphering logs but you could copy/past the last couple of paragraphs of Panic into a reply.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • MBP Kernal Panic powerpoint

My MBP kernal panicked when I launched Powerpoint for the first time??? Any ideas??? Seems to work fine now, sould I be worried???

If it only does it once, dont worry about it.

  • Odd Kernal Panics

    Hey all,
Never thought it would come to this day when I would report a problem with my lovely mac
All has been fine and dandy with my iMac G5 until yesterday. I left my computer on while I left the room. When I came back the fans were blowing hard and the screen was black and frozen. I restarted by holding the power button in and it loaded up and then produced the grey screen with the "Please restart your computer" Kernal Panic.
Applecare took me through some steps such as disconnecting USB devices and trying a couple different boots with different keys. It was getting to the login screen fine but the mouse and keyboard weren't working so I couldn't login! There was power to the mouse (because it was lit) but the keyboard had no life. Anyway so Applecare said they would send a Engineer to pick my mac up and repair it. However, later on I tried taking the power cable out and then putting it back in again and booting. I got to the login screen and the mouse and keyboard worked, without a kernal panic too.
The mac continued to operate the rest of the day fine with no crash/kernal panic. However this morning It Kernal panicked again. Luckily I have backed up my internal hard drive now. I ran Techtool's and it passed everything. I also did a disk permission check - it was fine. Kernal panicked again, so I tried a extended apple hardware test. It passed all tests. Yet when i restarted and logged in after the hardware test, it crashed again.
Any ideas anyone? I know this is weird, but when it kernal panics, the bluetooth logo in the top right of the screen near the clock it has a line through it that I don't recognise. It is different to the bluetooth transfer connection logo. Could it be the bluetooth module that is making the mac crash? I very much doubt it but thought I would mention it. Thanks all.

I had just recently bought a new Lacie External so I just copied the whole internal hard drive contents onto the new drive. Thankfully! Thats useful to know that the line through the bluetooth logo means a bad connection or whatever.
I did a Apple Hardware test though like I stated, and it said the Logicboard was fine and it passed the test. Shall I try a couple more hardware tests? I read that sometimes it picks up stuff in tests after your initial one. I've got a suspicion that its software related, unless it is the logicboard. Is there any tests I can to check it any software is making the mac crash?
I cancelled the engineer because the mac had begun to work (I managed to login as the keyboard/mouse worked). I can easily call the enginer again to come and collect my mac, but I am just in the stages for my final revision for my exams on monday and tuesday next week! So I rather the mac got collected after them! I am at university in Wales at the moment though and the company that Applecare hooked me up with said they only do onsite repairs if you live around London. So it would only be someone to collect the mac for taking it in for repair.
PS. It's a Rev C as far as I know. The one before the Intel chips.

  • Tiger 10.4.2 okay, but when Updating to 10.4.3 Kernal Panic.

Here is my nightmare. I reformatted my main HD and installed Tiger, then the 10.4.2 combo update and all is well. Did permissions, then installed the 10.4.3 combo update and on restart my screan went grey with a lot of jiberish writing everywhere and frozen screen "Kernal Panick". Had to start all over but this time I didn't use the 10.4.3 combo, just the standard update. It did the same thing. Now I erased my HD again and started over again, this time doing the update through my software update and still the same problem. I didn't install anything but the operating system so there shouldn't be any conflict??? I have 10.4.3 working on another HD with all my apps no problem, so why this nightmare. Note on my second HD I had the same problem, but by doing the software update I was okay.???HELP.......
    NOTE:
I am using Firmtek's SATA card SeriTek/1V4 for all my drives and it has been updated to the latest firmware.
    Dual G4 1.42ghz Mac OS X (10.4.3) 2048 ram

If after an erase and install and no third party software additions you are getting a kernel panic, the problem likely resides somewhere in hardware. It could be due to the card that you mention, it could be due to RAM suddenly going bad, or any third party addon which was connected during the update since you say it is happening during the update. I've written a kernel panic FAQ here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Basically, try to isolate what hardware is causing the issue, and repair the directory after each kernel panic with Disk Utility's Repair Disk on the 10.4 installer disk.

  • The Kernal Panics Continue... with my 3 day old Macbook

PLEASE HELP! Bought my first Macbook in Oct 2010; it started kernal panicking every other day in Dec 2010 when I would wake it up. Last Thursday and Friday (1/20/11 & 1/21/11) took it to the Apple Northridge store to have it fixed~ we wiped off all software, did a system restart, re-seated the ram, ran a 24-hour stress test and it was still kernal panicking. On Monday (1/24/11) the genius bar gave me a brand new Macbook, right out of the box. The only thing they didn't give me was a new power cord. My new Macbook has been working great for the past 3 days, until this morning, when I opened it up and received a kernal panic. How is it that 2 new Macbooks (my first one was only 3 months old) are both kernal panicking??? Someone please shed light~ these are my first experiences with Apple and I really want to love them but... my Toshiba never gave me problems like this.

Jay, thanks for getting back to me. I am getting a panic log, please see below. I haven't downloaded any apps, either from Apple or third-party, and I'm not using any third-party devices. The only download I've made is from Flip.com to upload my flip-videos to. I appreciate any and all suggestions you have. Thanks again

  • Will Apple Genius Bar run Diagnostic tests on my computer or do I need to set up a special appointment?

I got my Mac OSX with Lion about 9 months ago. Two months after I bought it, it crashed. Apple gave no direct explanation and ended up wiping the computer. Two months after that it happended again. That time they gave me a knew hard drive but they still didn't give me an explanation. Then recenty it crashed (kernal panicked) after I downloaded the thunderbolt application. That time apple was able to restore everything.
Unfortunately, my computer is now showing many of the same symptoms (slow loading, safari freezing, applications needing to be forced quit...etc) as it did before it crashed the first two times. I should mention that when I say "crashed" I mean my computer wouldn't turn on again. Now I am afraid to turn my computer off or even let it go to sleep. I know this isn't good for it but I don't know what else to do.
So my question is, will Apple Genius Bar run some diagnostic tests for me or give me a special lesson? Or do I need to pay for a special lesson? I just want a trained person to run some diagnostics and go through the basics of updating, shutting down, and restarting my computer with me. That way if anything goes wrong they see it first hand.
One more thing, could it be something I am doing. I have downloaded Flash Player but only from the Flash website. But I have heard Flash/Mac problems. Or is there anything else I could be doing or downloading?

With Apple you Always Need to Make an Appointment. Otherwise they will turn you away. Even if the place is empty.

  • Will not recognize internal hard drive

I have a strange problem with a 2009 MacBookPro.  It started acting "strange" for the user over the past few months.  By "strange" I mean it would freeze, or fail to boot, or sometimes even restart without any reason.  Now, it gets even stranger.  Tried the standard things,  RAM reseat, replace, check for loose connectors etc.  It would fail to boot when the hard drive was connected internally.  Then it would give a kernal panic and fail to even recognize a hard drive as being installed.  Did a PRam reset, SMC reset and even the power off/control key to try to reset the open firmware.  No sucess with anything.  This is a suystem with an internal battery.
Yet, when using this exact same hard drive on an external USB drive connection, it would boot fine.  Next tried it in Terminal mode to boot up another MBP.  Failed to boot.  When the 2nd MBP was booted from its internal drive and the suspect machine was plugged in as a Firewire (Terminal mode on "strange" computer) an External Firewire Drive appeared on the desktop, then a few seconds later, an identical copy of the first Ext FW drive appeared.  This went on with evenbtually six copies of the one single Terminal booted hard drive appearing on the desktop of the second computer.  None of the six drives would open or even allow any indiccation of what they contained.
Tried to partition the hard drive when it was put back into the internal slot but it would not unmount and failed to partition.  The same thinmg happened when trying to erase it.  Connected the hard drive via USB to a Windows 7 machine and used it to erase both the Recovery and Main partitions from the ard drive.  Both were erased but the EFI partition could not be erased or cleaned.  Put this same hard drive, as an external USB, into a very old XP machine and there the EFI partition was removed when a "Clean" command was sent via command line.
I then took the, now totally erased hard drive, and put it back into the computer as an internal drive and booted the computer from a 10.8 USB stick so I could partition the now empty hard drive.  The drive was not even recognized as being present.  Did the same thing, but using the USB external connection for that same hard drive.  It partitioned and then formatted with 10.8.1 (what was on the USB stick).  After the OS was installed, the computer would boot using this newly created OS when connected as an external USB drive.  Put the drive back in as the internal drive.  Got a Kernal Panic.  Forced shutdown and retried.  Noi kernal Panic but drive was not even recognized.  Pulled the drive from internal and put it back into the external USB and tried booting.  System would not recognize the drive as even being present.
I then erased and cleaned the drive in the XP machine again and then, using the USB connection on the second computer reinstalled 10.8 from the USB.  When I tried the now newly created software again, the same thing happened as listed above. 2nd machine booted fine on the drive as a USB, "Strange" machine booted fine using the drive as an external USB, Kernal Panicked then would not be recognized in the "Strange" machine.
It appears that when the drive is connected internally. it not only does not have the OS software recognized but will rewrite something in the drive that makes it impossible to be recognized by any Apple.  My first thought was that the EFI partition was corrupted somehow so that was why I tried cleaning the EFI partition along with the other two partitions.  But even with a new EFI and other partitions, the drive was not useable once it was used to try to boot as an internal drive in the suspect computer.
Now here I am dropping into speculation mode.  My guess is that something in the very basic ROM (Pram?) that recognizes a hard drive is in the internal slot and tries to get to the EFI instead fails and in the process it screws up the EFI (or maybe even an address table?) in the hard drive.  If it recognizes that there is no internal hard drive, it will happily boot from either a USB stick, a USB connected external hard drive or a Firewire/Terminal mode computer connected to it.
Sounds like a motherboard problem but I am wondering if it is possible to "flash" the very basic ROM that is at the start of the process back to factory default or maybe just replace the chip if it is the same one used as part of the Firmware password protection system.
Anyone have any other ideas or thoughts about possible solutions or at least a way to definitely identify what the problem's cause?

Answer has been found.  The internal drive SATA cable was replaced and the system is now working correctly.

  • How do I import and old iPhoto library?

    Hi all,
I recently had to send my macbook back to apple when it kernal panicked on me and eventually broke. I'm now reinstalling everything and I can't seem to import my old iphoto library in iphoto 06.
I can see the old library on my backup drive but I can't select it to import!
    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Morganator
Don't import it under any circumstances. If you do then each of the versions of your pics get treated as individual images and you end up with a mess.
To restore the library: Put it in the Pictures Folder or where ever you want it. Hold down the option (or alt) key when launching iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Lbrary.' Then navigate to the library location. If iPhoto sees a valid library then it will open it.
    Regards
    TD

  • Copied Keychain folder

ok i have been running leopard since day one and love it....i had a HD failure and needed to replace the drive but then had some kernal panicking so decided to do a FRESH install of leopard.....everything went smoothly.
Then this is what i did to recover files.....i didnt want to use a FULL backup from Time Machine being that there were a couple issues on the old OS so i wanted a clean slate but still wanted my files and folders and stuff like that.....so I dragged over what i needed from the old drive (music, docs, movies, and some preference files and whatnot)
Then once all that was carried over i started installing apps like Adobe Design Suite and MS Office and iWork......once i was back up and running i noticed that things like my browser was missing things like passwords and actual preferences and things to that nature.....other apps were not acting right either...all looking for keys and such....so what i did was fire up Migration assisitant and did a full migration of files, folders, prefs etc.
So far everything seems to be working fine and all the apps are running like they should......but was copying the entire keychain folder from the old OS to the NEW OS a good idea? I used the same system password i used on the old OS and kept all other stuff the same

Yes. That's the appropriate way. login.keychain in conjunction with Cookies.plist and the stuff in the Safari folder (bookmarks, form values, etc.). You did well.
