Signed Applet able to connect to distant webservice?

Hello :)
I was wondering if an applet would be able to connect to a web service located on a distant server (Axis 1.3). I have signed the applet but it still doesn't work...
Architecture:
Signed Applet >> Axis 1.3 web service >> MySQL requests
Is it possible without editing the java.policy file on each client machine?
If the answer is no, would it be better to change my architecture by the following one ? :
Signed Applet >> Servlet >> Axis 1.3 web service >> MySQL requests
Thanks in advance for your help!
Bye

I'll try to explain a bit more what i am doing out there. It's just a test applet to gather information with forms. When the user is done filling the forms, he clic send.
The applet connects to an axis web service which connects to a MySQL databases and create the user account with the user informations filled in the applet.
Tell me if you need to know more about it. Here is the exception:

  • Signed applet using ssl connection Problem!

    Hi all.
The problem is that when I sign my applet and try to connect trough SSL the IAIK throughs ClassCastException when trying to load the client certificate.
    1. I added client certificate ( DER format ) to the applet jar.
    2. I signed an applet with another certificate so it whould have all permissions.
    3. My applet tried to create SSL connection and failed throwing
    java.lang.ClassCastException: iaik.asn1.structures.Name

I have found a solution for a similar problem. Check out http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/guide/security/jsse/JSSERefGuide.html#Troubleshooting

  • Signed applet accessing remote host getting AccessControlException

I'm fairly new to java development, so hopefully this is an easy answer, but in my searching I haven't yet been able to figure out why this isn't working for me.
I have a self-signed applet, running on a server in my intranet. I understood that using a signed applet would allow connecting to any host within the applet. In the applet, I'm using the following code to try to connect to a remote host, which is also in my intranet:
    import org.apache.commons.net.ftp.*;
    FTPClient ftp = new FTPClient();ftp.connect("[myhost]");
//Where [myhost] is the name of the host I'm trying to connect to.This works fine when running from Eclipse Applet Viewer, but when I run from the website, I get the prompt to accept the signature and run. I click run. When the code above runs, I get the following exception:

    Bonjour,

  • SOAP / WSDL LabView 2010 can't connect to local webservice of network printer

    Hi,
we are using a Labelprinter from cab (www.cab.de) that supports a webservice.
    IP: http://192.168.1.66/services.wsdl
When i use this link in FireFox i will get a XML file (see attachment). The company "cab"
has an example using NetBeans to write a deskop application using Java. I tried that and
i was able to connect to the webservice.
When i do that with LabView 2009 or 2010 i get an error message:
    1. URL doesn't exist or WSDL is wrong
    2. authentification failed
    3. proxy settings wrong
    to 1)
i'm shure the link is ok, i can't connect to it with Netbeans (i used copy & paste to be sure)
    to 2)
In Netbeans it is not possible to enter a user and PW. But anyway i have use the standard
soap user the was given by the company.
    to 3)
    don't use it
The last point is, that there is an error in LabView 2009 and 2010, e.g. error parsing the XML file?
    Can someone help me?

  • Signed JAVA applet still not connecting.

I have a signed applet that works in my development environment, but as soon as I run it from my website, I get this:
    basic: Referencing classloader: sun.plugin.ClassLoaderInfo@1754ad2, refcount=1
    basic: Added progress listener: sun.plugin.util.GrayBoxPainter@a7c45e
    basic: Loading applet ...
    basic: Initializing applet ...
    basic: Starting applet ...
    basic: completed perf rollup
    network: Connecting socket://XXX.XX.X.XXX:XXXX with proxy=DIRECT
And that's it, it stops. It never loads the UI, or anything.
I believe the signing worked. I accepted the security certificate when it came up. I'm not getting any other errors (Like a security error).
    any help would be appreciated.
I realize this isn't a lot of information, but It works fine in the IDE, so I don't think it's the code. I have stack traces in every try/catch, so I should see any exceptions. Also, this is being served by the same server as the web-page. It didn't work before I signed it, so I thought that would fix it.
The only error like this that I find on the forums is an unsigned applet not working after it's moved to the server.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure that the remote socket you are connecting to, i'm assuming probably your home computer? has the port(s) at your (local) router forwarding to your computer,or whichever computer is listening for the connection.

  • Cannot connect to database in a signed applet

Hi i have an applet that connects to a database and does stuff. However when I move the applet to a different server i get errors. I did sign the applet but i still get
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission <server> resolve)
Do I have to explicitly allow the applet to open a socket to this server, do I have to set up policy files and how exactly is this done? Please explain in detail
    Thanks

First, don't use applets to connect to the database directly.

    hi, guys,

  • WebService call from signed applet and MS Vista

    Hi.
I'M developing a system that needs to call web services from a signed applet.
I have made the solution like this.
The applet starts by checking that the 12 needed libs is present under the <java home>\lib\ext folder. if not it will download the files automatically and restart the browser.
This works fine in Windows XP because the signed applet gives me read/write access to the whole machine, but in Vista this isn't possible anymore (as i understand it).
My question: Is it possible to put these libs in another folder that the ext lib? I have tried to define the "archive" tag in my Object tag but i get the class not found exception thrown in my face.
If there is a solution to this i would very much like some pointers!
If not what can i do to get access to the <java home>\lib\ext folder under Vista?
    Regards
    Michael Pallesen

When invokin applet methods via javascript, you are accessing privileged actions from an unsafe source.
Depending on your needs, you could either load the system variables in applet init into class variables and return the information contained in the class variables to javascript or wrap the method calls inside AccessController.doPrivileged() calls.

Ok I have found my problem :
On every web pages, we have defined some inactivity timeouts.
On my own server I have disabled these timeouts but not on the distant timeout.
And it seems that the timeout (defined in javascript ont he web pages : 3s) has a very bad influence on the launching of my applet ... only with firefox (with IE and Opera no problem)
My problem is anwsered but the problem keep alive for firefox ...

  • Signed Applet not loading on Mac OS X if using HTTPS protocol

    Hi All,
I need to open a trusted applet on Mac OS 10.2. The applet works fine if using HTTP protocol. But if the protocol used is HTTPS the the applet does not loads and "javax.net.ssl.SSLException - untrusted server cert chain" exception comes on the console.
The error comes for both - Verisign and javakey - signed applet.
On seaching for possible solution on the net, i came across following link: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020525101202503&query=Workaround+for+secure+Java+applet+problems
It says that this is Mac's known bug and gives the workaround as:
    1. Access the problematic site with Internet Explorer on Windows. Click on the padlock item and export the certificate to a file.
    2. Copy the certificate to your Mac.
    3. Use the command
sudo keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore /Library/Java/Home/lib/security/cacerts -file mycert.cer
to import the certificate file to your keystore (substitute mycert.cer with the name of the file containing the certificate). The keystore is password protected - the default password is "changeit".
    4. Restart your browser
But the client cannot be asked to do all this to run the applet.
Is this problem being solved by Mac in their java implementation or is there any other possible solution?
    Thanx in advance.
    Regards,
    Charu

I am experiencing the same problem - I notice it does not happen on OS9.2 using IE but appears a problem on all browsers on OSX
Apple gave me the following reply.....
Re: Bug ID# 3268633: cannot load applet class under https connection
    Hello Andrew,
Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. We have received feedback
    from engineering on your
    reported issue.
Please know that to get Java to recognize the certificate you will need to do
    one of two things, depending
on which VM you are using. Since you want it to work with Internet Explorer, we
    will assume Java 1.3.1.
In Java 1.3.1 you'll need to add the certificate to
    /Library/Java/Home/lib/security/cacerts using
/usr/bin/keytool to import the certificate into the certificate database.
In Java 1.4.1 you should be able to just add the certificate to the keychain
    using certtool. For more
details on how to do this, please refer to the information found at
    <http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/tooldocs/solaris/keytool.html>. After
doing so, if you should require
further help from Apple in resolving this issue, we recommend that you request
    assistance from Developer
Technical Support. This must be done by filing a Technical Support Incident.
So I am supposed to tell every Mac user to do the above am I?!!!

  • Classloader caching in signed applet is very slow and weird

I have a signed applet running in the 1.4.1_01 plugin environment, and
I'm getting the following kinds of messages when I use debug mode 5 in the console:
    Connecting http:[myserver]/someclass.class with no proxy
    Connecting http:[myserver]/someclass.class with cookie "JSESSIONID=..."
    Sometimes, the classloader will say:
    WARNING: Unable to cache someclass.class
Moreover, some classes will be repeated two or three times, as if the classloader is trying to get the same class two or three times.
Some of these classes are even in the java.lang package!!
The thing is, I'm actually trying to get the applet to use webservices, so I've signed the Apache Axis jar files (about 8 or so) and included them in the "cache_archive" parameter. The classes giving problems are from these archives, not from my main applet jar.
The applet will eventually work, but the first time takes a LONG time to initialize because the classloader is trying to verify all the classes (i think). Subsequent runnings of the applet within the same browser will be much faster, but the same thing will happen if I start a new browser instance.
    My questions are:
    1) Why is the classloader trying to load from my http server rather than from the local jars? (they seem to be statically cached, I checked the plugin control panel)
    2) Why is the classloader reloading the same classes multiple times?
    3) Is the classloader verifying the signatures for each class, because it's taking a long time due to very many classes (100's).
I can't seem to find ANY documentation for this at Sun or Google.
    Please help if you can!
    Andrew

I've got the same problem with applet using SOAP based on jwsdp.
But classloader only try to get classes from server that are used in SOAP calls.
The only workaround I found is to move this classes to root package, but still there are problems with
    Connecting http://<host>/int.class with no proxy
    Connecting http://<host>/int.class with no proxy
    WARNING: Unable to cache http://<host>/int.class
    requests.
Maybe this is a bug of Sun SOAP implementation?

  • How to run an applet with JDBC connectivity on a web browser

I've created an Applet in Java with SQL connectivity...i.e. it retrieves certain data from a table in SQL and puts in the TextField.....
Now, the problem is that this Applet works in NETBEANS....but fails to work when I use a web-browser..or the "appletviewer" command....
It says that it doesn't have permission to access local files....On Research, i've found that it is somethin' related to the concept of "Signed Applets", "Permissions" & "Security Policies" in java which doesn't allow any applet (without Certificate) to access Local Files.....
Can Somebody please tell how to overcome this problem.....?

I'm going to be blunt with you. You are most likely going to have to redesign your application from scratch. And if it turns out you don't have to then you should anyway because it's a bad idea and fraught with peril.
Anyway here the major touchpoints on this discussion. You can be the judge of how these various points apply to you.
    - Applets are restricted. - Yes Applets have a number of security restrictions on what they can or cannot do. This is designed to protect users from malicious applets. By signing your applet you can request permission from the user to do certain activities that are otherwise restricted. But not all.
    - If you are using the JDBC-ODBC bridge then you need a different driver. If you sign your applet it might work in some limited scenarios but it will be hairy and is discouraged.
    - If you are using Access or another file based database (CSV Excel etc) then you are doomed. You'll have to get yourself a different database. A non file based one. It doesn't matter if you sign your applet or not. You're still doomed.
    - If you are trying to connect to a database server that is not at the same physical address as your web server you are doomed. Signing the applet will not help
    - Connecting directly to a database from an applet is extremely risky business. Starting with now anyone can steal your username and password for your database quite easily.
What you should do in the redesign is put all the database accessing code in a Servlet. This Servlet does not have to be Java, it could be PHP, Perl, ASP, etc. It doesn't matter. Just put it on the server side. Then have your applet connect to this code via a webservice to do what is required.

  • Granting SocketPermission using signed applet

I have had a dream of locally caching a jar file for an applet so that all the code will be on the client machine after the first time the applet was loaded. Basically, I have a very thin applet composed of a jar class loader and a tiny applet which will check for a jar file on the client and download it from the server if it does not exist. These simple classes are in a signed jar file. Basically, this thin applet does the following:
    1) Check for the big, app jar file in c:\Temp
    2) If it does not exist, open a URL input stream and get the big jar
    3) instantiate a jar class loader object on the now local, big jar file
    4) load the "main" class
    5) use reflection to run its initialization method
    6) the application then attempts to open a socket to the server
I get all the way to step 6 and this is where things go bad. As far as I can tell, the "thin" app loader class has permission to do anything it wants since it was downloaded from a signed jar - I haven't tried to do anything I was not able to do with this class. I think the problem arises because the app class came from a non-signed jar file and it appears to have all the typical applet restrictions. I can make URL connections to the local client (since that's where the code was loaded from), but not anywhere else.
I was hoping all classes the "thin", privileged class loaded would inherit these privileges, but obviously the class permissions come from where the class was loaded from. This is a bummer and my guesses for solving this problem are:
    1) grant permission to the entry class for the app somehow (I tried something like this by executing the entry method for the app in a AccessController.doPrivieleged block - no luck)
    2) sign the app jar and somehow read and accept its certificate so that all classes loaded from this jar are privileged (I am not sure of how to do this)
I am hoping someone might have an elegant solution to this problem as this is really the last step in my caching solution. By the way, the entry app class is not an applet itself if this is useful information to anyone. The "thin" applet is the only applet and just hands control off to the entry method of the main app class in the jar.
    TIA!

Signing an applet provides it with the ability to run outside the sandbox. This does not automatically give the applet permission to do anything it wants. The applet must still request the desired permission before actually attempting an operation that requires that permission. Depending on the browser or whether you are relying on the Java plugin, you need to call the necesary security method first. I wrote a signed applet back in May 2000 which also needed socket permission. I don't have access to the code anymore so I cannot recall exactly the classes and methods you need to invoke. If you search the Signed Applets forum for my name, there are several messages that should help you.

  • My iMac PowerPC G4 will not connect to my Belkin N  router. I have not been able to connect for so long that I actually gave up on this computer until today, so it is a little out of date software wise. It is running OS 10.3.9.

First off i apoligize for the title length, a bit new to help forums and didnt realize thats what that was .
    Anyways;
My iMac PowerPC has been having this issue for quite a few years, prompting me to flat out replace it. I recently had a friend come to need a computer, and told them they could have it once i got it working.
The unfortunate problem that i luckily discovered: my friend and i use the same brand / model of Router, the Belkin N+ (N plus incase it removes the plus sign like it did in the title).
Ive tried everything i know, which isnt much. I've verified the password is correct, ive restarted the computer, and ive restarted my modem and router. Nothing works.
I should mention also that the computer is out of date program wise (obviously) since i havent been able to connect with it in so long. I am still using Internet Connect, and the computer still gives me the option to try .Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Dean

The router is much, much newer than the computer, perhaps some characteristic of the WiFi network as it's currently setup is preventing the computer from connecting.
Try to go back to the basics: set your WiFi network to "b" mode only (i.e., turn off "g") and termporarily remove the password from it. See if the computer will at least establish a connection at that point. Then start turning on one thing at a time ("g" mode, then security, etc).
Not sure what format your WEP key is, but if it's not 10 characters (the minimum for the standard, which constitutes a 64-bit key), you can try making it that long. If it's 13 or 26 characters, it might be a higher encryption than the computer can support.
If all else fails, you could try looking on ebay/craigslist for a copy of Tiger to install on the iMac, which would have software support for more WiFi encryption schemes. Also, it would provide software support for USB WiFi adapters that would also be able to connect to more modern networks.

  • IIS, Javascript, Signed Applet and ASP Blank Page Problem

    Hi,
I'm having a problem using a Signed Applet in a site that runs in a IIS (Windows Server 2003).
My aspx web page uses the applet to read my smart card and get information from it.
This applet uses an auxiliar dll (stored in a second Signed Jar file) in order to read the information from my smart card.
The way the solution is design:
    1) Aspx page is asked from server
    2) Internet Explorer recieve the page and asks the server for it content (images, applet, javascripts, etc)
    3) After this the JVM runs (console opens)
    4) After the Aspx page render fully a javascript register onload fires and call an applet method
    5) Applet receive the call and run the logic of the method:
         - reads the smart card;
         - calls Javascript function in order to fill aspx fields with information from smart card
         - calls Javascript function the simulates a click in a botton of aspx page (in order to call server side part sending data readed from smart card to server)
    5) The server makes some logic with the information receive and responds to client registering in aspx page a call to another Javascrit function
    6) The client received the asnwer from server and runs the Javascript function registered on step 5)
This Javascript calls another method from applet and runs the following logic:
         - reads more information from smart card;
         - call javascript function in order to fill more fields of aspx page with the information readed
         - calls Javascript function the simulates a click in a botton of aspx page (in order to call server side part sending data readed from smart card to server)
    7) The server makes some logic and call another pages with no Applets
    8) Client asks for a second page with the same applet and we start with another logic express on steps 1);2);3),4);5) and then 7).
This is all ok, until sometimes the server stop responding correcly for requests regarding this two pages with the Applet.
When this happens the server just responds with a blank page.
         - with fiddler I can seer the request for the aspx page (that uses the applet)
         - but server responds with a blank html page
    The JVM doesn't fire.
The IIS log don't show errors.
    The eventviewer doesn't show errors.
The problem is solved with an IIS reset or a Application Pool reset.
After a while the problem returns.
This problem occours for other user in another machine, the server just stops responding correcly to request regarding pages with applets, the other pages still continue to work.
If we disable Java Control Panel->Advanced->Java Plug-in->Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in the problem seend to stop, but we can't force all clients to disable this option right?
Or there is a way to force the Applet to run with this option disabled?
    As anyone experience similar problem?
    Regards,
    OF

It could be that server gets into this wrong state because of previous requests made by applet but it is hard to tell.
I am not clear how old/new plugin can make a difference unless your applets run in the legacy mode (i.e. you are actually trying to reuse SAME instance of the applet when
    it is loaded next time).
    I'd start with
    1) carefully comparing good/bad sessions
    2) checking whether server will serve correct response to another client when it serves "bad" page for current client
    3) add debug statements to aspx - it is scripted page, may be some condition is not met and then it returns blank?
    4) record all http requests in one session until you get to "error" state and then use any http server testing tool to "replay" this set of requests.
You should be able to get server into the same state without use of applet. Then you can try to tweak set of requests to see what makes a difference.
