Signed jars and HTTPS

I'm running a web application from jetty, which involves an applet on the client-side, JSPs/servlets on the server.
The applet jars needs to be signed during our build proces (by my company's keystore based on our purchased cert) but the customer will need to provider their own cert to run the https pages.
Is there a way to do this? Right now, I"m getting the "signer information does not match signer information of other classes in the same package" when I try to run it in HTTPS. This could be due to my jetty HTTPS settings not being quite ready (pointing at a keystore which is incorrect) - but I want to make sure that I can at least do what I need to do? If so, any suggestions/advice/tips would be most welcome!
thanks

I'm trying to use the KeyStore that the applets were signed with on my local build as the KeyStore I'm pointing to when starting up Jetty. This still leads to the 'signer information does not match signer information of other classes in the same package' error when trying to accept one of my signed jars for use. I exported a cert from the keystore used in the build and imported that into my browser as well.
I also tried using a keystore with a self signed certificate for running Jetty and had the same problem.
When not running in HTTPS, I can use all the signed jars and everything works fine. Is the conflict between the signature on the jars and the one jetty's using for SSL? Why didnt using the same keysotreAnd if so, why doesn't accepting all the jars and certs help out? I may need to do something programatically in the code for this, I guess - tho I'm not sure where to start out.
If anyone's had a similar problem, I'd appreciate hearing how you'd worked it out.
thanks,
tOm

  • Peculiar issue with signed .jars and Linux (Debian unstable, 2.4.20-custom)

    BACKGROUND:
I am a developer working on a Java3D application, which is to be deliverable over
the Web. Delivery as an applet seemed a natural choice, and so I spent a considerable amount of effort learning (I won't say "mastering") the process of
creating a self-signed .jar containing java3d-<some_version>.exe. I have in fact
    successfully created a fully-fuctional from-scratch JPI/Java3D/myapp install. By
this I mean that Windows machine with only stock IE installed could hit my URL,
get the proper JPI installed, followed by the Java3D runtime I'd chosen, as well
as a third-party DXF loader, and finally (after much clicking of 'Yes', 'Accept',
'OK', etc.) see my app in a browser window.
That was on my old, slow, Windows2000 workstation. Now I have a shiny, new
workstation upon which my employer has graciously allowed me to run Linux. Sadly,
the re-creation of the self-signed .jar files under a new JDK has not gone smoothly.
    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
When a user attempts to download the self-signed .jar containing the auto-install
executable for the Java3D runtime, the normal security warning prompts are displayed (one for granting to install the extension, one to accept the "suspect" certificate from me alone). The plugin happily downloads the .jar file, and then
a NullPointerException is thrown, with a
    stack trace like:
    NPE!
    at java.util.zip.ZipFile.getInputStream (unknown source)
    at java.util.jar.JarFile.getInputStream (unknown source)
    <something>doPrivileged<something>
    etc.
I apologize for the lack of a full stack trace; I would essentially have to type it in by hand after printing it out on the remote test box; I hope that I've caught the important details above.
After this, the pure-java signed .jar is downloaded and installed, and then the applet "loads" with the predictable ClassNotFoundException for javax.media.j3d.SceneGroup.
Downloading and installing the J3D runtime by hand and then re-visiting the URL results in a fully-functional applet.
I've tried Blackdown Linux JDKs 1.4 and 1.3.1, as well as Sun's JDKs 1.3.1_07 and 1.3.1_05 for the compiling, jar'ing, and jarsigner'ing of these files, all with the same result. At each new JDK, I re-did the HTML conversion so that he appropriate
JPI version was required on the client. I did complete uninstallations of all client JPI instances (including Web Start for 1.4.1_x, as well as cleaning the registry on the client).
When this strategy worked, it was on Sun JDK 1.3.1_05 for Windows runnning on Windows2000, unknown service pack.
    DESIRED BEHAVIOR:
I would like my clients to be able to go from stock Windows2K/IE (this being an intranet without any other options) to some JPI version running the J3D extension, with only the need to click 'OK', 'Accept', 'Grant This Session', etc. a bunch of times on the part of the user. I want this to happen without my having to resurrect my decrepit old Compaq Deskpro just to play the role of "build host" for my
Java3D and loader .jar files, if at all possible.
    FILES:
Here's what gets merged into the "main" applet's mainfest at creation time:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Extension-List: java3d DxfLoader
    java3d-Extension-Name: javax.media.j3d

    DxfLoader-Implementation-Title: Eupla DXFLoader
    DXFLoader-Implementation-URL: http://10.1.1.1/heartcad/lib/DxfLoader.jar
And into the manifest for the J3D .jar:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Implementation-Version: 1.3
    Specification-Version: 1.3
    Extension-Installation: "java3d-1_3-windows-i586-directx-rt.exe"
    Extension-Name: javax.media.j3d
    Implementation-Vendor-Id: com.sun
    Implementation-Vendor: Sun Microsystems, Inc
    Specification-Vendor: Sun Microsystems, Inc

I have seen that bug, and the problem I'm having seems to be different than it. The extension installer is in the first extension .jar my applet asks for, and it
never works automatically, regardless of how many times the applet is loaded.
The second .jar, which doesn't have to run any installer, always works fine, but the first one will never work (a manual install of the Java3D runtime is required). This seems to not be the behavior described in the bug.
I will continue to search for an answer to this problem, and of course if I should find anything I'll post it here.

  • Signing jar and appending to the original manifest

I create my jars with a manifest file with some entries

however when I sign them the manifest is replaced and I lose my manifest entries

  • Verisign signed JAR and HotJava

The verisign signed JAR panel comes up
on Opera 5.12 when loading the verisign signed JAR through the APPLET tag and under netscape 6.1 via the HTMLconverter stuff. Thats good but
Under HotJava nothing happens? It thinks its not signed.
What do I need to do? We want to recommend HotJava
    period.
    [email protected]

Sorry if have not been specific enough.
Verisign is providing an object signing certificate, which is supported by either Netscape, IE or browsers implementing the appropriate interfaces (like Opera).
HotJAVA afaik does not support this specific type.
Additionally, looking at the HotJAVA web site there is no indication that it does.
If you would like to have a signed applet working with HotJAVA you should generate your certs with the keytool and import it in the keystore on your clients so you are able to sign your applets the SDK way.
Again, the Verisign x509.v3 object signing cert does not seem to be supported, nor should be Thawte's or any other commercial CA.

  • Why can alter signed jar and still verifies?

I always thought that jar signing prevented the alteration of a jar file (in the sense that if you added or altered a file, it would not match the signatures in the Manifest, ".SF" file or ".DSA" file). However, this isn't the case!
When I've signed a jar file and then add a file to it afterwards, it still passed the "jarsigner -verify" test! And if you look at the code (in sun's code) the jar verification never throws any exceptions if a file isn't mentioned (and signed) in the manifest.
What's going on here? Am I missing something?
Also - where does it check that the bytes of a file match the signature in the manifest? And where does it check that the manifest matches the ".SF" file?

Everything was working propely after installation but when I restarted the server, the listener, the iasdb instance, and the EM started properly but when I went to http://servername:1810 and clicked on start all i got them all started but the HTTP Server and the Single Sign-on. Anyone can help me solving this problem??

This error Can be caused by a syntax error in your httpd.conf file, check it / correct it try reloading OHS.
Ensure that emctl is not running when you run any dcmctl commands! If you have already run any dcmctl commands with emctl running that can cause your problem - if so to fix it solution is really to re-install.

  • JNLP: Signed jars but still not trusted

I have an applet that has signed jars that were signed by the same key, the applet shows the correct warnings on startup and works fine (allows access to the local file system, etc), however there still exists the 'yellow triangle warning' on one of two popups frames that the applet produces (but not the other one).
The applet does use native code (packaged in a signed jar and referenced in the JNLP). The jars are all signed by the same certificate from a CA. I originally didn't have the JNLP signed (by placing it in the main jar in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLP) but this didn't help. Also I didn't have the JNLP codebase set to a real URL (and really cant in production because its a solution we deploy to customers servers - its packaged software not hosted) but even after I tested with a codebase to a test server, it still didnt remove the famed yellow triangle. I have all-permissions set in the JNLP.
    So two related questions:
    1) Other than having not having signed jars (or not signed correctly), what other reasons cause the 'yellow triangle'?
    2) The warning only appears on one of the popup Frames. What could be the possible reasons for that? Are there some privileges that show the icon whether the applet is signed or not?
Note: While changing the client policy setting (showWindowWithoutWarningBanner) works, this cant be a solution.
    From the Java Console:
...It goes through all the jars (I only included one for brevity - there are 23 of them). Note it says 'have 1 common certificates'.. which I think indicates everything is signed by the same cert.
Is there any indication in the console logs I can use to determine why it is not trusted? It looks (to me) that everything is OK, until it says 'istrusted=false'.

Andrew - of course you were correct about the signed cert - I misspoke when the CA signed applet didn't show a warning. (You were also right that I must have checked 'always accept' the certificate on the server I had the CA signed cert on).
I think you guys are on to something about the privileged actions. It would explain where one popup has the icon and the other doesn't. We have Javascript making calls into the applet and we do use JNI (although I don't think there are any calls back). We do wrap these calls in privileged actions but maybe we missed something. What I've seen before is a security exception is thrown if we don't wrap them - but maybe there are areas where we don't and it doesn't throw an exception or it does and we eat it somehow (and for whatever reason doesn't cause anything noticeable).
Now that I know it could likely be the applet code and not necessarily a build issue with signing the jars, I have another place to look...
I'll check it out and let you know what I find.

  • Problems with Signed jar

I am having a problem with signed jar and deploy in html
get this error on the page
    self signed
    /dist/testfx.html
JavaFX application could not launch due to system configuration. See java.com/javafx for troubleshooting information.Unsigned jar works perfectly but has security and permission issues when using classes.
This was working in beta 45

Can you post an example project that demonstrates the problem? There were changes to the ant tasks and netbeans support around B45 that could cause problems depending on which version of the SDK and NetBeans you have. Similarly, if you wrote ant scripts prior to B44 and then use them with a later build you could have problems. And of course, if you're producing the Jar file and deployment artifacts without using the provided ant tasks (for example, using the normal ant jar task) you'll have problems.
I've verified that this works as expected in the FX 2.0 GA release using ant from the command line, and with the NetBeans 7.1 beta release using the FX 2.0 GA release.

  • Signed Jar not sending Emails.  PLEASE HELP!

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my Signed Jar and Emails
I used the KeyTool and jarsigner to sign my jar, but it still won't send emails.
Everything works as classes, but as soon as I package it up in a jar and then sign it, it stops working.
    Can anyone help Please!

I have included the package in my jar.
I did find something on JGuru that suggested that I'm lacking in Meta-Inf files. I guess the SMTP package looks for additional files in the Meta-inf directory of my JAR. When Packaging it up using JBuilder, JBuildr doesn't include these files. I'm going to give that a whorl.

  • Problems with signed jar, HTTPS and forms 10.1.2.3

I have been facing a hard problem for some days concerning jar signed and HTTPS. The server can be accessed both internally, on our intranet, by a local ip address, and externally, on the internet. The first access doesn't require https,as hosts are under our domain. Externally, however, we use https. That's de logic:
A local server , a proxy server (on our DMZ) and externals hosts (internet). The proxy server is responsible for getting the information on our local forms server, applying the https security and connection to the external reequests.
Concerning my application, it uses some signed jars. All of them were signed by using 'sign_webutil.bat', located in java bin directory.
When the access is made internally, everything works fine. The jar files are downloaded correctly on the user machine and the applets run well. On the other hand, when we the access is made on internet, we get many errors concerning the classes inside frwebutil:

    Hi, Michael!
Thanks for your reply. I read the article you suggested and I signed ther many jar files I use with the same certificate, however the problem remais the same. Without HTTPS, all works fine. With HTTPS:

  • Three questions about signed jar file and applet

I use three signed jar file. Each of them signed by different certificate. First of JARs contain applet class. When I start applet from html page I see message &#8220;This applet was signed by&#8230;&#8230; but Java cannot verify it&#8230; Do you trust&#8230;?&#8221;. All times I press &#8220;Yes I trust&#8221; and after this questions applet stop to work end exit. If I use only one certificate for signing of three JARs then applet continue to work after question. 1) What should I do to fix this bug? 2) Is it any method to check from applet that user press Trust button? Is it any method to emulate work of SecurityManager to check that Certificate object is trusted (I want do call some method check(Certificate) and if certificate is not trusted I want to see message with question: &#8220;Do you want to trust this certificate&#8221; and so on)?

    Hello Jarman,
    1. If I have a signed jar file, then as long as the
certificate is recognised as trusted that applet can
run as a fully trusted application on the client
machine. So I should not have to add lines such as
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
    "readFileDescriptor", "read" ;
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
    "writeFileDescriptor", "write" ;
to my java.policy file. true/false ?true
    2. If I am running a signed jar file in the Java
plugin then I do not need to have a verisign or thawte
certificate (however to allow my certificate to be
accepted I do have to import it into the cacerts file
    on the client machine). True/false?true
    3. Following on from question 2, if I want to be able
to run an applet on a client machine, without messing
around with ANY files on those machines, I need a
    verisign or thawte certificate. True/false?true
    4. (And finally) Apart from a security exception
saying that I need to add one of the lines like those
of question 1, is there any way I can get other debug
information as to why the signed jar file is not being
recognised as signed? No. This could be a problem of importing your certifcate into the wrong place.
The information on the following link is a little bit dated but it helped me to successfully install a testcertificate and sign an applet with it.

  • Signed CAB and JAR

    Hello,
is it possible to implement on the same page, a signed CAB(for IE JVM) and a signed JAR(for plug-in)? If so can anybody post some sample code for the page? or give some advice(with code if possible) on going about this. Thanks!

    It's possible:
    <APPLET code="YourAppletClass.class" codebase="pathToYourApplet" archive="Applet.jar" width="800" height="200">
<PARAM NAME="cabbase" VALUE="Applet.cab">IE will happily ignore the archive and Netscape / Java Plugin ignore the cabbase parameter.

  • IIS, Javascript, Signed Applet and ASP Blank Page Problem

    Hi,
I'm having a problem using a Signed Applet in a site that runs in a IIS (Windows Server 2003).
My aspx web page uses the applet to read my smart card and get information from it.
This applet uses an auxiliar dll (stored in a second Signed Jar file) in order to read the information from my smart card.
The way the solution is design:
    1) Aspx page is asked from server
    2) Internet Explorer recieve the page and asks the server for it content (images, applet, javascripts, etc)
    3) After this the JVM runs (console opens)
    4) After the Aspx page render fully a javascript register onload fires and call an applet method
    5) Applet receive the call and run the logic of the method:
         - reads the smart card;
         - calls Javascript function in order to fill aspx fields with information from smart card
         - calls Javascript function the simulates a click in a botton of aspx page (in order to call server side part sending data readed from smart card to server)
    5) The server makes some logic with the information receive and responds to client registering in aspx page a call to another Javascrit function
    6) The client received the asnwer from server and runs the Javascript function registered on step 5)
This Javascript calls another method from applet and runs the following logic:
         - reads more information from smart card;
         - call javascript function in order to fill more fields of aspx page with the information readed
         - calls Javascript function the simulates a click in a botton of aspx page (in order to call server side part sending data readed from smart card to server)
    7) The server makes some logic and call another pages with no Applets
    8) Client asks for a second page with the same applet and we start with another logic express on steps 1);2);3),4);5) and then 7).
This is all ok, until sometimes the server stop responding correcly for requests regarding this two pages with the Applet.
When this happens the server just responds with a blank page.
         - with fiddler I can seer the request for the aspx page (that uses the applet)
         - but server responds with a blank html page
    The JVM doesn't fire.
The IIS log don't show errors.
    The eventviewer doesn't show errors.
The problem is solved with an IIS reset or a Application Pool reset.
After a while the problem returns.
This problem occours for other user in another machine, the server just stops responding correcly to request regarding pages with applets, the other pages still continue to work.
If we disable Java Control Panel->Advanced->Java Plug-in->Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in the problem seend to stop, but we can't force all clients to disable this option right?
Or there is a way to force the Applet to run with this option disabled?
    As anyone experience similar problem?
    Regards,
    OF

This is all ok, until sometimes the server stop responding correcly for requests regarding this two pages with the Applet.
When this happens the server just responds with a blank page.
    - with fiddler I can seer the request for the aspx page (that uses the applet)
    - but server responds with a blank html pageWell, if http requests look identical in case of success and failure (pay attention to cookies, etc) then it has to be something on the server side.
It could be that server gets into this wrong state because of previous requests made by applet but it is hard to tell.
I am not clear how old/new plugin can make a difference unless your applets run in the legacy mode (i.e. you are actually trying to reuse SAME instance of the applet when
    it is loaded next time).
    I'd start with
    1) carefully comparing good/bad sessions
    2) checking whether server will serve correct response to another client when it serves "bad" page for current client
    3) add debug statements to aspx - it is scripted page, may be some condition is not met and then it returns blank?
    4) record all http requests in one session until you get to "error" state and then use any http server testing tool to "replay" this set of requests.
You should be able to get server into the same state without use of applet. Then you can try to tweak set of requests to see what makes a difference.

  • Signed applet and HTML parameters

I've created a signed applet and everything works fine, except for the fact that i can't add parameters to the applet.
Without the parameters in the HTML the applet inits and starts and can be used without problems. But when I add paramaters, the applet reports a "class not found exception".
I used HTML-converter to convert the applet tag to object/embed tags.
Has anyone had the same problem or knows what I'm doing wrong? I'd really appreciate some help.
    Thanks in advance,
