Simple Button Action, gotoAndPlay... HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Hi Everyone,
I have just started using CS3 and ActionScript 3.0. I'm a
self-taught Flash user, and was very comfortable with the previous
version I was using.
I am in the process of building my website, and have come to
a complete hault now that I'm trying to assign actions to my
buttons. I've been reading up on AS 3.0, watching tutorials and
trying different codes for DAYS now, but NOTHING is working. I'm
about to pull my hair out :(
Here's where I'm stuck:
On my home page, I've got 7 buttons leading to the different
sections. Let's just talk about the first one. My "About" button
appears on the scene at Frame 15. The "About" section is on Frame
27. I want to click on my "About" button and got to and Play Frame
27. It's that simple.
I am not familiar with ActionScript 3.0. However, after all
the reading up I've been doing, I understand how actions cannot be
assigned directly on the button anymore, but rather on the main
Actions layer, referring back to an instance of a button that has
been named accordingly.
Still, nothing I've tried is working. I don't know what I'm
doing wrong.
If someone can help, I would be forever grateful. I'm

It's such a minor little detail. I suspected it would be
something this small, as that's usually the case, but I just
couldn't put my finger on it. Not one of the places I researched
made any reference to that when they said to name the instance of
the button. How stupid.
Anyway, thank you again. I can finally move forward. This was

  • Simple Button Action Help

    Hi
    I am new to flash and having a bit of trouble. All I would
    like to do is be able to create a button and have that button
    navigate to a frame.
    What I am doing now is:
    Insert - New Symbol - Button and name the button (ex: about)
    Go through the up/over/down/hit steps and return to scene 1
    I then drag the about button onto the stage
    I give the about button the instance name of about_btn
    In the action layer, I enter the following code:
    stop();
    _root.about_btn.onRelease = function(){
    gotoAndStop("about");
    "about" being the keyframe I would like to go to
    When I test the button, I get error 1120: "Access of
    undefined property onrelease".
    I am working on adobe flash cs3 on a pc. I know this is a
    very simple issue and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    AS3 is case sensitive. You must have mistyped onrelease
    instead of onRelease

  • Simple button action that goes to a page within the same doc

    I can't figure this out. I have a button I want to use that takes a person back to the first, or second page of the same doc. It's a catalog section with a table of contents. I need to make links for the pdf that takes people to certain pages within the same document.
    In the Buttons panel, I see how to make the button, but when I assign an action, the only choice that makes sense is "Go To Destination", but I don't get or see any way to choose "page 2" of the document, or another selection method.
    I did this before a few years ago on hundreds of pages, and when I open those old documents up to copy/paste the same buttons, they don't even appear to have actions on them anymore, as if it never happened.
    So, what's the secret? Certainly there's a way to link to another page in the same ID file, no?

    Finally figured it out. I do NOT use the button panel at all. No buttons needed. Just select the grouped object that I want for my button, and hit the "add hyperlink" button in the Hyperlink panel. Then choose "Page" from the menu that opens up and be on my way. What was throwing me for a bad loop, was that I had copied and pasted the button graphic form another document. Well, since the link made previously was broken now, I had the red flag in the Hyperlinks panel...and thus, the "new hyperlink" button was greyed out, sending me in circles. The minute I deleted the old hyperlink it carried over from the old document, the new hyperlink button worked again and all was well.
    Thanks.

  • A few simple questions i need help on please

    i have an ipod mini. my computer crashed and i have a new computer. is there a way to upload my songs and lists to the computer? i have itunes 7.0.
    second question. is there a way to upload only one or two songs to an ipod mini that is already loaded with songs, without uploading all the songs again. is the current info automatically overwritten so that i would end up with only the two songs on the ipod after uploading?
    thanks in advance.
    bob

    is there a way to upload my songs and lists to the computer?
    Maybe. You say your old computer crashed. Does that mean it doesn't run at all? Does it mean it hangs during the boot-up process? Does it mean the hard drive came to a crashing screeching halt? Without knowing more about the death of the old computer none of us can know whether the data is recoverable or not.
    OTOH, you have at least part of your music data on your iPod. So with the help of third party software (check out your favorite download site) you'll be able to transfer your iPod's music and playlists to the new computer. If the iPod contains your entire music collection you are pretty much good to go.
    Can you add only a couple songs to your iPod? Sure, after connecting it to your new computer you'll be told it is synced to another computer and asked if you want to sync it to this new one. Select cancel - no you don't want to sync it to the new one. After the iPod appears in iTunes select it and in the iPod preferences select manually manage. This will let you manually add or delete songs.

  • CS4- simple button Frustration?

    Hello, I just upgraded to CS4 and am finding Flash very frustrating. I only use flash for very simple ad banners. Usually have one button to click to go to a web page. Now in CS4 professional I can't do the simple of things, like create a link on a button. In the action script panel it says "Current selection cannot have actions applied to it", and the object is simply a button.
    What am I missing here? Thanks for any direction.
    sm

    If all you are doing is simple things like that, switch the publish settings to Actionscript 2.
    Actionscript 3 is a new beast of a language that doesn't necessarily lend itself well to using just a simple button action.
    If you want to use AS3, then give the button an instance name (in the properties panel when you have the object selected) and put the following code in the first keyframe.
    myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,doClick);
    function doClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
         navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://path/to/site"));
    Replacing "myButton" with the instance name you gave your button, and the URLRequest with the web address you want to go to.

  • Need help for button actions

    Hi, can someone help me please? I like to put a invisable
    button over a picture (movie) with two actions. 1. rollover will
    show a title, 2. release will get new URL. I succeed in one or the
    other action but not on both of them combined. What can I do? I use
    action script 2. Thanks. Sarosa

    You could achieve the same result putting code in the
    button...
    1 - Open example.fla
    2 - Save it as example2.fla
    3 - Layer Actions --> frame 1, delete all the code leaving
    only:
    testing._visible = false;
    stop();
    4 - Layer button: select the bt button instance
    5 - in the Actions Panel (by the way, attached to the
    button), put this code:
    on (rollOver) {
    testing._visible = true;
    on (rollOut) {
    testing._visible = false;
    on (release) {
    getURL("
    http://www.google.com", _blank);
    6 - Test your movie: it works too!
    If you are totally new to Flash, always remember to name
    things in an appropriate way using the "official" names.
    (read again the beginner's tutorials)
    For example, it's wrong to say "I put the action script on
    the button not on a separate layer".
    This is completely ununderstandable...
    More: I didn't "convert" a graphic symbol to a button but I
    changed the behavior of a graphic symbol into the behavior of a
    button.
    Doing so, the graphic symbol is recognized as a button with
    all the properties attached to a button.
    The main difference between a graphic symbol acting as a
    button and a real Button is that the Button has four frames (Up,
    Over, Down and Hit) and the graphic symbol has not.

  • Help needed with Button action performed

    Hi,
    I am new to AWT prgramming .
    I have created a menu called " Menu System Test window " and it contains toplevel menu items of "File" and "Help" and File Menu contains subitems "Product Evaluation" and "Exit".

So when i select some checkboxes in that new frame and click the button labeled "Metricslevel" it displays some resultin textField1 , similarly when i click Button labeled "Measurementlevel" it displays some result in textField2.
    My question is i have another button in Frame Called "Reset". When i click the Reset button all the check boxes which have been checked previously should be unchecked and moreover the result in both the textfield should be cleared.

  • Simple button help needed!

    I want to make a simple round button that glows when you
    mouse over it and depresses when you click it.
    Apparently to do this I need to use Filters to make the glow
    and bevels. But Filtersonly work on movie clips, buttons and text.
    So I make a circle and convert it into a button symbol
    (Btn1). Then I make another button symbol (Btn2) and use the first
    button symbol (Btn 1) on the Up Over and Down frames of Btn 2.
    Assorted Filters are applied to Btn 1 on the Up Over and Down
    frames to get the effects I want.
    I test the button (Btn2) using Enable Simple Buttons. It
    works perfectly - glows on mouse over and depresses on click. Then
    I try Test Movie -- and the button doesn't work!!!
    Not does it work when exported as a SWF file!!!
    I watched a tutorial video that came with my Flash Pro 8
    Hands-On-Training (HOT) book and he used pretty much the same
    technique -- except he only tested his button with Enable Simple
    Buttons. I'll bet my house his didn't work with Test Movie either!
    The stupid thing, is I was just able to achieve exactly what
    I wanted very quickly using LiveMotion 2!
    What is wrong here? Why is it so impossible to create a glow
    button in Flash? Why has it been easy in Live Motion for years?
    All help appreciated!
    Thanks
    craig

    I thought the nesting button situation might be the problem
    BUT there is no other way to apply Filters to Up, Down, etc. Also,
    a freaking tutorial book described that as a valid method, but
    obviously it ain't.
    I tried using movieclips as well but basically had the same
    problem.
    I mentioned LiveMotion 2 because that ancient program can do
    easily what Flash Pro 8 seems incapable of.
    What is the logic behind not allowing Filters to be applied
    to simple graphics? It's absurd!
    There's got to be a way...

    Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Maybe this will let the iPad reboot and then you may need to restore again but see if this helps to start the iPad first.
