Simple logging under Java 1.3.1?

Hi,
I am not able to use Java 1.4 at the moment and so cannot take advantage of
its new logging classes, can anyone point me in the direction of any
tutorials on doing basic transaction logging with 1.3? Is it just a case of
calling a function that opens a file and appends a line to the end of it
every time I want to log something or is there more to it than that?
Richard

there is something critical that you must use 1.4 final release from sun because it contains some modifications of the logging APIs, i found that a book uses an old 1.4 beta 1 logging APIs which changed in 1.4 beta 3 and 1.4.0 final release, and also i found this probelm in one of sun's offecial publications
here is my email : Simon Ritter - Sun UK, i asked him for an explanation
so, you will see the old version of Logging APIs and the NEW one after it, understand this code and use java 1.4.0 docs to learn more, and take care of old version of the new java logging APIs

Mohammad,
thanks for the feedback on the sample code/presentation. I've just
checked the
latest JDK1.4 which is the release candidate made available in the last
couple
of weeks. You are right, they have changed the API for LogManager.
This is the
problem with working at the leading edge and dealing with Beta code. I
will
change my presentation and sample code to reflect the new API
definition.
Regards,
Simon.

Dear sir,
i downloaded:
Java  2 Standard Edition
A Tutorial Of New
Features in J2SE v1.4.
on 23.01.2002.
and i have some comments on the Logging APIs.
and also, I hope you tell me some sites from where i
can know more about those new features of J2SDK 1.4.
best regards,
mohammad nabil
Note:
i'm sure you are busy but here is my comments if
you want:
generaly i downloaded a sample chapter of somebook
that uses the following methods in LogManager
void addGlobalHandler(Handler handler)
void removeAllGlobalHandlers()
void removeGlobalHandler(Handler handler)
void setLevel(String namespace, Level level)
which are not exist at all in the
"java.util.logging.LogManager"
also this situation is reported in the Java 2
Standard Edition A Tutorial Of New Features in J2SE
v1.4 page 7 & 8 of 42
the Tutorial code is:
     import java. util. logging.*;
     try {
          Handler logHandler = new FileHandler(" example.
log");
     } catch (IOException ioe) {
          // Handle exception
     LogManager lm = LogManager. getLogManager();
     lm. addGlobalHandler( logHandler);
     lm. setLevel(" loggerExample", Level. FINEST);
     Logger logger = Logger. getLogger(" loggerExample");
     logger. fine(" User " + loginId + "logged in");
     logger. log( Level. WARNING, "Bad password entered 3
times");
my suggested, which is compiled and working properly,
my code is:
     import java.util.logging.*;
     import java.io.*;
     Handler logHandler = null;
     try {
     logHandler = new FileHandler("d:\\example.log");
//OR     logHandler = new
FileHandler("d:\\example.xml");
//OR     logHandler = new ConsoleHandler();
//OR     logHandler = new SocketHandler(String host,
int port)
     } catch (IOException ioe) {
     // Handle exception
     System.exit(0);
     LogManager lm = LogManager.getLogManager();
     Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("loggerExample");
logger.addHandler(logHandler);
lm.addLogger(logger);
logger.fine(" User " + "loginId" + "logged
in");
logger.log( Level. WARNING, "Bad password
entered 3 times");
     //Now logger is registered in LogManager and we can
get it.
     Logger newLogger = lm.getLogger("loggerExample");
     newLogger.setLevel(Level.WARNING);
// this second logger.fine will not appear in
the file;
logger.fine(" User " + "loginId" + "logged in
again");
newLogger.log( Level. WARNING, "Bad password
entered 3 times again??!!");
>
i hope you tell me if that java tutorial is too new so
i can't find the code in my J2SDK version 1.4
candidate Release "Released from about 2 weeks only",
or that version 1.4 i have is newer than the one used
by tutorial.
thanks.
hope this help

  • Help tracking down a file descriptor leak under java 6

    I have a large application I work on that runs fine under java5 (apart from possibly the latest update) but running under java 6 results in file descriptors used for TCP sockets being leaked.
    I'm testing this under FreeBSD 6 (both i386 and amd64) using diablo JDK and a port build jdk-1.6.0.3p3 but I have had reports from other users of exactly the same issue under various linux distributions. There are some reports that going back as far as 1.6.0b5 will resolve the issue but no later version works and a few reports that the latest 1.5 updates have the same issue.
    This application is using standard IO so Socket/ServerSocket and occasionally SSLSocket, no NIO is involved. Under the problem JDKs it will run for a while before available FDs are exhausted and then fall over with a "too many open files" exception. So far I have been unable to recreate the situation in a simple testcase and the fact it works fine under earlier JDKs is really causing me issues with deciding where to look for the issue.
    Using lsof to watch the FDs that are leaked I see a steadily increasing number shown in the following state:
    java 23438 djb 54u IPv4 0xffffff0091ad02f8 0t0 TCP *:* (CLOSED)
    java 23438 djb 55u IPv4 0xffffff0105aa45f0 0t0 TCP *:* (CLOSED)
    java 23438 djb 56u IPv4 0xffffff01260c15f0 0t0 TCP *:* (CLOSED)
    java 23438 djb 57u IPv4 0xffffff012a2ae8e8 0t0 TCP *:* (CLOSED)
    If these were showing as say (CLOSE_WAIT) then I would understand where they are coming from but as far as I understand the above means the socket has been fully closed but the FD simply hasn't been released. I'm not an expert on the TCP protocol however so I may be wrong here.
    I did try making the application set SoLinger(0,true) on all sockets which of course made all connecting clients think the connection was aborted rather than gracefully closed but even with this setting the FD leak persisted.
    I've gone as far as looking at what I think are the relevant parts of the src for both JDK versions I am using but there are very few changes and nothing that obviously looks linked.
    I'm fully prepared to spend a lot of time looking into this and I'm sure I'd eventually find the cause but if anyone here already knows what the answer may be or can simply give me a nudge in the best direction to look I would be very grateful.

    After weeks of dancing around the issue for weeks, we narrowed it down to garbage collection. If we put System.gc() to run periodically , file descriptors get garbage collected properly . I've tried playing with the settings by using XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC which seems to help a great deal while system is under stress. However when there is light activity.. the file descriptors grow again and eventually bring everything down.
    Any clues ? is there any way to make gc to perform full collection more often ?
    pls whelp !!!

  • Com.sap.xmii.Illuminator.logging.LHException: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundErro

    Hello,
    Intermittently users get the following error when logging into the application which is built upon xmii:
    com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerResource
    At this point in the application it is trying to read information which is stored in a SQLServer database.
    We see the following errors in trace files:
    application [XMII] Processing HTTP request to servlet [Illuminator] finished with error.
    The error is: com.sap.xmii.Illuminator.logging.LHException: com.sap.xmii.Illuminator.logging.LHException: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerResource
    Exception id: [00145E4D6... [see details]
    This is running on a NW JavaAs 7.0 SP18, MII 12.0 SP8.
    We've replaced the JDBC driver with one which SAP support told us would work, but that did not fix the problem either.
    We can get the problem to go away for a period of time by simply disabling and then re-enabling the Data Server connection.  It is using the IDBC Connector with a SQL connector type.  STATUS shows No. Connections Used 0, No. Connections Available 1, Max No. Connections Used 2.  Max. Wait Time 0.0.
    Ideas?

    Hi John,
    Before connecting SQL server with SAP MII, try connecting SQL server independently.
    It helps to narrow down the problem.
    If the independent connection works fine, try connecting with SAP MII with proper JDBC drivers
    Go through the SAP Note 1109274 & forum MII 12.1 - connection to MS SQL2005 database
    for more information on JDBC drivers.
    Thanks

    If you've rebooted the box or bounced the ServletExec-xMII service, do you see anything in the SYSTEM level messages that are forced during the initialization sequence in either the Lighthammer General log or the LHSecurity General log that would give any indications to the problem?

    Could someone help me restore my photos?  I was trying to "restore my database" in iPhoto when it shut down - now my thumbnails are distorted, logged under a new name, and when you click on a thumbnail it opens as another photo.  I was following another "helpful hint" hold down the option and command key and restart iPhoto - select the top three and you should be able to get rid of the dreaded exclamation point.  My MAC ran through the first two options dealing with thumbnails, but crashed during the "restore database"  step and now I have a mess.  Help, please.  Thank you.

    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Agent Logs under agent names shows no information in CSD

    I have 1 supervisor and that supervisor needs to see the agent logs under each individual agent name but for some reason there is nothing being reported there. If an agent takes a call or makes a call, inbound or outbound will appear under the agent name with data but logs just will not show anything. Is there a setting somewhere i'm missing?

    You may have already checked this and apologize if you did, but have you verified that the supervisor is configured to see the columns under the Logs?
    In Supervisor, go to View - Preferences.  In the window that appears, go to Team - Agent - Logs and click on "Configure" on the right side, in the "Columns" field.  Make sure that the columns have a check mark next to them.
    If that is ok, have you tried running Supervisor from a different machine to see if that works?

  • Logging in java defined functions

    Hi,
    Are there any means of logging in java defined functions used in mapping?
    Regards
    Yann

    Hi,
    You can do MapTrace in the UD
    MappingTrace trace = container.getTrace();
    trace.addInfo("trace Text");
    Thanks,

  • JavaMediaFrameWork fails under Java 1.4 but runs under Java 1.3

    I have an JMF application running under webstart. It runs ok in Java 1.3
    Now I am trying to get ti to run under Java 1.4. The attached error is rather useless,
    but by guess at what is happening is that the JMF control has some .awt. stuff included
    but that Java 1.4 emulates .awt. in swing. But something was not set and the default does not
    work.
    This error messages does not appear in the 1.3 run
    Any suggestions would be greatly appriatated.

    I have also experienced buggy problems with 1.4 from things that work perfectly well in 1.3. I've informed Sun about some of my bugs and of course they're having trouble reproducing them, but what I'm going to do is just stick with 1.3 until 1.5 comes out, and then give that a try. If 1.5 is as buggy as 1.4, then perhaps I'll simply dive into C++ and leave Java behind.

  • Not able to log into Java Engine (IR,ID,SLD & RWB) using PISUPER account.

    Dear Experts,
    We have installed SAP PI 7.0 in our landscape. Initially, I think PI will get installed in client 001. I have created a new client 100 and using Note: 940309, We have changed the default client from 001 to 100. In client 100, I have checked in SU01 and found that all PISUPER,PIRWBUSER,etc users got created.
    I am able to log into PI using PISUPER(log on pad), but not into IR,ID,SLD and RWB. Can you please let me know why I am getting authentication failure when I am trying to log into Java Engine with user PISUPER ?

    Hi,
    Java stack communicates with the abap stack through UME. So if you can log into abap just fine but cannot via java, that means either the ume is not configured properly. Open config tool, navigate to 'cluster_data -> server -> cfg -> services' and edit Propertysheet "com.sap.security.core.ume.service". Change Property and make sure "ume.r3.connection.master.user" and "ume.r3.connection.master.client" is correct. Now make sure that ume.r3.connection.master.user user is not locked in abap. Finally if ume.r3.connection.master.user is not locked, then ensure that the password is set correctly on ume.r3.connection.master.password.
    Also make sure that the gateway is running with problems.
    Hope this helps!

  • Log4j / Way to use any appender to get log4j logs into java logger logs?

    Hi,
    I've an older component, this use log4j.
    So I wonder if there any way to get log, logged by Log4J, into Java Logger logs?
    Thanks a lot!

    Thanks a lot, but this is not what i ment.
    I use glassfish. Glassfish uses for all log the Java Logger.
    My problem ist, that I have a library, that uses Log4J for logging.
    My current workaround is, to log all Log4J logs to console.
    Glassfish collect all "sysouts" and write them into the jave logger log file.
    But I wonder, if there is another way. I can't find any JavaLoggerAppender or something else.

  • How to access sharepoint logs using Java?

    Is there a way to access Sharepoint logs using Java from a remote machine?
    Any help / pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
    I am not aware about any client modal class for log but if you create your own service and host in SP server then you can call this web service in JAVA. (i am not sure whether JAVA supports .NET web service or not).
    You can refer this for web service:
    http://www.arboundy.com/2010/12/centalised-view-of-sharepoint-uls-log-files/
    Hope it could help

  • Is ABAP going to lie down under java ?

    Hi,
    rumours are going on that  Java will be the major programming language for SAP in future, though abap will not die, as all those web article say, but its defintely going to lie down under, java,
    is it not additional burden for a developer being in sap, doing ABAP+ java, where in he can fully devote to java, and then choose many openly available jobs in different domains.................................
    its like if we want to be in sap, we learn ABAP would be good enough to program, now along with ABAP, have to learn JAVA that too at very deep level,
    then instead learn Java and take jobs in other domains.............................
    whats your comments botn on java overtaking abap

    Hello, this was my favorite lunch-time topic when I started doing SAP three years ago. And nothing has changed during that years. Except that most of the SAPguys started to hate Java Webdynpro:)) And ESS/MSS is being rewritten to ABAP WD etc. Is that enough to prove there will be no Java revolution in next five years. There will be enough ABAP work for everybody for next 5 to ten years for sure.
