Simple question about environment variables and setting the class path???

ok I have been trying for a few months now ontrying to set the class path..
I work with windows vista..
on the environment variables user variables,
I have the name of the variable as class
and the value as C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_04\bin;.
where javac is...
on the system variables I have
its name as class
and the value as C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_04\bin;.
why is this not reading javac

The PATH environment variable should have as an entry the directory containing your javac executable. The CLASSPATH should have have entries which define your library directories and entries which are your jar file libraries. In the early days, probably the only CLATHPATH entry you will need will be a '.' to indicate the current directory.

OK - I can set the Class Path. Now - what else?

Dear all,
I read with interest the many posts in this forum debating whether to use an IDE for your Java development, or to use some other (more primitive????) means of crafting code - notepad for example. As I understand things:
If I use notepad and the command line to build, run, and compile my classes, then I will hopefully come to learn and understand how to set my class path correctly, and gain an insight into the environment in which I work - an insight moreover, that I might not happen upon if I leave an IDE to do all this for me. Ok - fine, I can use my IDE, but also do some testing on the command line to fill this gap in my knowledge.
If I use an IDE to help me build my UIs, then it is more than likely that I will progress through life without a profound knowledge or understanding of layout managers, cell renderers, event handelers etc. OK - this is fine too, and I have decided to craft my UI 'by hand' because I want a broad appreciation of Swing and anyway, after the initial pain (akin, I imagine, to child birth), it's not so bad really.
Now I feel I am cooking. I understand my environment, and the more esoteric features of Swing; I use my IDE to fashion my code - it's cool and helps me with code completion, and direct access to the API documentation as I type, and it does a whole bunch of refactoring stuff too.
I feel as if I am getting the best from both worlds now.
Would anyone argue against an approach such as this?

I also become somewhat downcast when I see people in the forums requesting code so they can simply paste it into their aplpications. Learning can be painful, but it is a necessary pre-requisiite to knowledge in my view - so copy/paste can be a most harzardous thing.
I am hoping this thread will be a small guide to new folk.

Question about session variables and binding

I'm a newbie with Application Express. I've gone through several tutorials and a book, and now I'm actually getting started with apex. My first adventure is a tiny little form, where all you do is fill it out and it sends an email. Pretty simple.
And, i have it working just fine - but I have a question about something I don't quite understand. Basically, I am generating the email text in a page process. And some of the form fields work fine if i reference them as *:ACCT_NAME*, but some give me the dreaded "not all variables bound" error. For the ones that give me the error, I can reference them like V('ACCT_NAME').
So, as a newbie, I'm a little confused. When is it appropriate to use the V function, and when it is appropriate to use binding? Why would one of the fields work with binding but not another from the same form?

A bind variable is a place holder variable available in an environment.It is used quite frequently(outside Apex Context) in SQL and PLSQL scripts and especially in Dynamic SQL statements.Many times using a bind variable gives better performance. In the Apex environment,page items and many other variables related to the session are available as bind variables and hence their value can be referred in SQL,PLSQL contexts as :VARIABLE_NAME.
Now V() function is an apex specific function which returns the value of an apex session variable outside the apex environment. So as Machaan pointed out, it is used in
procedures and triggers that gets called from within an apex session. This is required since the bind variables themselves are not directly available in the SQL environment but their values from the corresponding session can be accessed by this apex built-in function.
The length of any Bind variable name is limited to 30 characters, this is a limitation inherited from Oracle SQL itself and hence session variables(page or application items) whose name has a length which exceeds 30 characters cannot be used as the :ITEM_NAME format. In such cases you would have to use the v() method again. This might be happening in your case.

Question about shared variables and report generator

I have a project with about 200-250 shared variables and at every 12 hours i want to make a report containing information about some boolean and double front panel variables linked to the shared variables... Now, i've tried with both the "Write Trace to SpreadSheet File" function from DSC->History and with different functions from NI Report Generation Toolkit. My problem is this: i would like to get my xls file to contain just the timestamps when my shared variable changed value. As it is, the number of rows in the file depends, obviously, on the sampling interval given as input. As an example, in 12 hours, my shared variable would change value maybe 5-6 times. Thus i would like my xls file to contain just 5-6 rows with those 5-6 changes. If i set the sampling interval to say, a matter of seconds, that would mean too much unneeded information in my xls file. Instead, if i set it to let's say 15 minutes, i would probably lose the moment the shared variable changed value. Is there a way for me to achieve my desired functionality with functions from DSC or Report Generation Toolkit? Thanks in advance, Sabin

Actually, my first idea was exactly this: in an event case structure, whenever my variable changed value, i would retain the relevant data in an array and then at the 12 hour period write all of it in a report. However, my boss deeemed it memory unefficient and compelled me to use only one function. Thus my predicament... If you have more advice on this new info, i would be grateful... Cheers, sabin

Please help, simple question about Smart Playlists and Live Updating

PLEASE for some reason I've never gotten an answer on this.
I have a Smart Playlist called "Recently Played" with Live Updating. No matter how I set the parameters, the most recently played *song will ALWAYS appear on the bottom of the list when using my iPhone on the go.* I bolded that because I want you to be aware I'm not talking about on iTunes - I'm aware you can change how the list is viewed on iTunes.
When using your iPod/iPhone on the fly and Live Updating is enabled, is there any way to make the most recently played song appear at the very top???

Haven't seen that problem before but try the following: in iTunes, right-click the playlist name and enable the option "Copy to Play Order." Then sync.
The normal use of "Copy to Play Order" when you have the playlist displayed in iTunes in some sort order, but you want it to display in the iPod in shuffled order (as it will actually play). Different problem than you are observing, but the same thing "might" help.... Let us know.

Simple question about iPhone backups and password

I can't remember the password to my iPhone-backup in iTunes. But, phew, I haven't lost any data, as I have my iPhone with all data intact. So I deleted the backup in iTunes, and tried to start a fresh backup with a new password. But alas, that doesn't seem to be possible (it backs up, but doesn't ask for a password, and when trying to uncheck encryption I get asked for a password).
Does this mean iTunes now won't let me back up and retrieve the data I actually have on my very own phone? And does it mean that I now have two options:
a. Keep on using my iPhone, keeping the data on it, but without the ability to backup and retrieve the backups, or
b. restore and set up my iPhone as a new device, losing all my data

If you update you will not be able to go back to a previous iOS version. The iOS is not included in the backup. The following link gives details of what is included: iTunes: About iOS backups

Simple question about table structure and HR in BW

i need to following data from HR:
current FTE, employee number, cost place
i dont think the current FTE is stored per employee. Therefor is would need a list that contains:
mutation start date, mutation end date, FTE, employee, cost place
i think cost place is a custom field.
my question : what tables names and field names do i need?

Hi,
For Head Count you can use 0HR_PA_0 datasource and the other Employee details like start date and end date you can get them from employee master data and FTE can be calculated from the Emloyee Master Data and Head count data.

Question about product variable - is BC the right choice for me?

I have a criteria that must be met for my ecommerce solution for a new business. The customer has a product that has a variable length, and would like the price to reflect the options that are offered. For example: the produced panels are 30" wide, but the customer can choose the length of each panel. Another option may be sq. ft. for material...
How can I achieve this with Business Catalyst? Is there an easy way?

Look into Product Attributes.
You can preset various sizes and change the price based on the size. See this KB Article.
I would recommend creating a trial site, use a template, then try Product Attributes and see if it does all of what you need.
If you believe it would work then you can go from there.

A basic question about static variables and methods

What would be the effects if I declare lots of static variables and static methods in my class?
Would my program run faster?
Would the class take more memory spaces? (If so, how do I estimate an appropriate number of variabls and methods to be declared static?)

when you declare a static var the var isn't created for every instance of the class, it just "live" in the class
when you declare a static method is the same, so if you have:
class MyClass
static int myMethod()
//Method work
you dont need to have a instance of the class to call myMethod, you can do such things like this.
int value = Myclass.myMethod();
if myMethod isn't static you can't do this.. so, if
class MyClass
int myMethod()
//Method work
you CAN'T call
int value = MyClass.myMethod();
instead, you have to write
MyClass m;
m = new MyClass();
value = m.myMethod();

SIMPLE QUESTION, BROWNIE POINTS FOR ANSWERERS: changing the file path used for an audio recording

After changing the name of an audio recording in the .band Media folder, the .band file continues to use the previous file name to try to find the audio file. I want to update the file path so that it uses the same file but with the new name. I thought I might be able to change the file path by editing projectData, but it appears to be encoded.
This is a common, crucial feature present in virtually all DAWs. Surely there must be a feasible way to do this in GarageBand?

if you want to change the name of the region that GB displays: double click the region within GB to open the track editor, then double click the name of the region (in the track editor) to change its name

Setting the Class Path

Hi guys,
I am having problems using Textpad to run my java programs. It compiles java programs, but it doesn't allow me to run the programs. It comes up the error;
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloApp1
I was having the same problem when I tried to run my java programs on command prompt. To solve this I resorted to using -cp to set the classpath to the directory where my java apps were located. The path in the environment variables is pointing towards my java bin directory, so that isn't the problem. Can someone tell me how I can set my classpath permantly and where I should point the directory to, so that i can run my java progs on Textpad.

You should always use the -classpath option for javac and java--even when you don't need to specify a path. If you don't need to specify a path, then write: -classpath "". The -classpath option overrides the CLASSPATH environment variable, which is what you want. Otherwise, you will never figure out how to compile different files.

I have a similar editor, and I was able to set it up to run simple, one file programs without package statements when I click a button. Your best bet is to find a Textpad discussion forum and ask how you can set it up to execute java programs. Or, check the help in Textpad.

An alternative - as stated in reply 2 in your other thread on this topic: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5170470 - is not to set the CLASSPATH environment variable at all. Use the -classpath switch instead.
As the documentation linked to in that reply points out: "The class search path (more commonly known by the shorter name, "class path") can be set using either the -classpath option when calling a JDK tool (the preferred method) or by setting the CLASSPATH environment variable. The -classpath option is preferred because you can set it individually for each application without affecting other applications and without other applications modifying its value."
As always, the documentation is worth reading; the available command line options worth using.

A simple question about c:out and the ADF bindings

I have a small problem which I can't figure out :-(
The solution is probably dead easy, but I don't see it ..
The problem is :
I have a jsp-file which have the following tags :
<c:out value="${bindings.EstimatedInterest}" />
<c:out value="${bindings.RemainingAmount}" />
And I want to have one more field which just adds these two together.
But I get this error :
Attempt to coerce a value of type "oracle.jbo.uicli.binding.JUCtrlAttrsBinding" to type "java.lang.Long" (null)
Can anyone pls point me in the right direction ?

Very simple question about declaring variables

if a create a new ' int ' as in the code below :
static int counter;
does the value of counter automatically default to ' 0 ' ?
Does this also apply if i declare the var to be public, protected etc ( but not final )

Most languages will initialise an int to 0 if no value is specified but it is dangerous to rely on this as it is not always the case. It is therefore recommended as good practice that you always initialise your own variables to ensure they start with the value you wish and not something unexpected.

Simple question about one RAID and 2 XServes

Hey Guys,
I have an old G5 XServe controlling an XServe RAID and want to add another XServe for Final Cut Server.
Is it possible to run one fiber line to one server and the other to the other server?
I'd like a straight shot to the RAID for maximized bandwidth, but maybe it doesn't work that way or wouldn't matter.

Yes, this is possible. Each xserve will have access to each half off the xraid. Each xserve can not access the other half! This is due to the design of xraids. Actually the xraids are two sets. Each set has a controller and 7 disks. These two sets are placed in one physical box. There is no data path between the two sets.
If you want to access the same data from 2 machines, this will not work. If you want to have each machine it's own data, you will be comfortable.
