Simple VPN solution mac to mac

I have a PM G5 at a fixed IP address and want to VPN into it from my 17" PB on dialup as I travel... Both are running 10.4 client.
So what is the simple way to get a VPN set up... (never done VPN before, but want secure dial-in)
a) do I need to install 10.4 Server onto the Desktop to get the VPN software on it, ready for the laptop to log into... ???
b) is there EASIER 3rd party software rather than going to 10.4 server for just VPN... ???
c) is it EASIER to use hardware VPN... ???
Sure appreciate some guidance as I dont know where else to start...

There is AlmostVPN. You can also just turn on "Remote Login" in the Sharing PrefPane and tunnel in through ssh. You can get an idea about tunnels on the AlmostVPN site. There are other sources if you google "ssh tunnel mac os x".
ssh is an encrypted log in to your home computer. Tunnels allow you to send data over a particular port through the encrypted interface.
You can also try OSXvnc and Chicken of the VNC. This link talks about using tunnels with vnc.

If not, what is the secure, reliable way to use an RV-120W with a Mac?
    Thanks,

  • Cisco VPN on Mac existing with Apani

    Hello:
I recently installed Apani VPN ( a Mac client for Nortel Contivity connections that connects through a browser) on the same machine with my Cisco VPN. Now for my customers with Cisco VPN connections I fail to connect with this error:
    51     11:12:50.183  09/16/2011  Sev=Critical/1          CVPND/0xC3400003
Function SocketApiBind() failed with an error code of 0xFFFFFFFF(ike-init-state.cpp:402)
    52     11:12:50.183  09/16/2011  Sev=Critical/1          CVPND/0x43400012
Unable to bind to IKE port.  This could be because there is another VPN client installed or running.  Please disable or uninstall all VPN Clients other than the Cisco VPN Client.
Only problem is I cannot find this process in my Activity Monitor--I'm not sure what the process is. The is no application that I can see in my "Applications Folder".  I haven't been able to get help from Apani. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Cisco but no joy.
Any idea how I can get cisco taking over again? If I have to choose between the two it is more important to get CIsco working. I am running a Macbook with OS 10.6.8.
    Thanks.

Apple's support section (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306256) says "How to enable Cisco VPN connections
You should use Cisco's VPN client software to establish a Cisco VPN connection via an AirPort Extreme base station. Note: In the Cisco VPN client preferences, make sure the "NAT-T" option is enabled.
Note: Some corporate firewall configurations may cause issues with the Cisco VPN software.
Please contact AppleCare support if you are unable to contact a Cisco VPN server via Cisco VPN client software and an AirPort Extreme base station.
I'm experiencing the same thing. DellLatitude D610. Netgear rangemax wireless PC card (WPN511). I can connect to the internet but I try to vpn into work I get half way through the connection process and get an error which states" Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding. I've spent 2 hours trying different settings. I really want to stick w/the apple product but will have to return it if I can't get it to work. I need cisco vpn via wintel for work.

  • Can i use VPN on Mac Pro and if so what version do i need?

VPN for Mac Book Pro what version is need?

Depends on the VPN you want to connect to, ie its protocol (IpSec, SSH, L2F, etc...). SSH isn't VPN per se, just a secure method of encapsulating data before transmission, but basically, some VPN clients are compatible with some VPN protocols, not all of them.

  • Asa in active/active vpn solution licensing question

    Hello All
I have a customer with the following requirements:
    1) A Cisco VPN Solution that will be support SSL VPN and Cisco Client VPN - The  solution will be a failover configuration running in an active-active set up.  The solution offered will be fully supported (i.e. it will not go into End of  Life or and lower level of support etc) by Cisco for the next 5 Years.
    a. We  would expect the devices to be similar to the ASA 5520 Appliance with  SW,HA,$GE+1FE,£DES/AES (Including ASA 5500 Advanced Endpoint ASS)
    2) User  licenses for the above - Please quote for both the following
    a. 500 appropriate SSL VPN User Licenses
    b. 250  appropriate SSL VPN User Licenses
I am quoting them for the 500 ssl vpn bundle
    ASA5520-SSL500-K9 and for the
    ASA5520-BUN-K9.
Is it right that in active/active  software 8.3 and above that the 500 ssl vpn licenses will be shared between the 2 asa's or will I need to have 250 licenses on each asa.
Also I have read that in active/active I cannot use shared licenses, is this relevant in a vpn solution?
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/license/license_management/license_86.html#wp2003381
Url above has this “The  backup server mechanism is separate from, but compatible with,  failover.
Shared  licenses are supported only in single context mode, so Active/Active failover is  not supported.”
    Also “Failover  Guidelines
•Shared licenses are not supported in Active/Active mode. See the "Failover  and Shared Licenses" section for more  information.
I also need to purchase the
    ASA-ADV-END-SEC and
ASA-AC-M-5520 (any connect mobile) as the vpn client is eos/eol.
Do I need to buy this for both asa's or can they share them in active/active mode.
    Thanks in advance.
    Feisal

Hi Vibhor and thanks for the quick reply. We will be using version 9.3. I was aware that the ASA does not support PBR but I thought with the new code you could do some policy nat that could help influence the outbound flow?
So in this case we have 2x ISPs and 2x public address space, one from each ISP. How is the NAT and routing handled by the ASA in this design?
Can I not identify the guest subnet (192.168.0.0/22) and NAT this to a public address from ISP1 and also identify the corp subnets (10.x.x.x)  and NAT them to ISP2?
My understanding (which is probably wrong) is that the NAT will select the egress interface rather than the routing table, so guest will be sent via ISP1 since the SVI interface of the ASA that connects to this ISP1 has an IP address from the same public address space..?
    Is that incorrect?
    Many thanks
    Rays

  • Full mesh VPN solution for on MPLS network with PE and CPEs

    Hi,
We are trying to evaluate some best solution for Hub-Spoke mesh vpn solution in a MPLS network. The VPN hub router will be in PE router and all the VPN spoke will be in CPE.
Can someone please let us know what will be the best vpn solution, we understands that there will be some technical limitations going with GETVPN but still we did counld find any documenation for possiblity of using DMVPN.
How about the recent flexvpn, can fex-vpn work on this requirement, where can i get a design/configuration document.?
    thanks in advance.

    Hello,
GetVPN is intended for (ANY-to-ANY) type of VPN communication, over an MPLS network with Hub and Spoke Topology, your best Option is to look for Cisco (DMVPN) implementation where this type of VPN is primarily designed for Hub & Spoke.

  • Simple IDS solution with 4215

Pls help me to find a simple IDS solution using a 4215, do I need CSA installed in each server in my protected LAN segment.
The way I understand is the CSA is part of HIPS solution, of course I could combined HIPS and NIDS but do I have to. Cisco IDS bundle (IDS4215-CSA-BUN-K9 Threat Prevention Starter Kit : 4215, CSA, CTR, VMS) combined both.
Can I just use 4215, CTR and VMS with event monitor to introduce signature based NIDS solution
    Thanks and Regards

Quote: Can I just use 4215, CTR and VMS with event monitor to introduce signature based NIDS solution?
Absolutely. You'll just end up doing nothing with the 10 CSA Desktop Agent licenses that came with the bundle. You can use them later, if you want, or just let them collect dust. It's your call.
The only thing to keep in mind is that if you think you'll ever use those CSA licenses, you'll have to make sure that you keep the SMARTnet support current...
    I hope this helps,

  • Setup VPN on Mac Mini Server running OSX through a BT Hub Router

    Hello everyone,
I know this question has been posted several times and I have looked at the suggested solutions, trying each of them. I think this is really down to my lack of knowledge hence hoping someone out there could point me to the right direction for more resources / information, please.
I am trying to setup a Mac Mini Server with VPN access. My server sits behind a BT Hub router. These are the steps that I have been through:
    1. I am using the server app and after registering a free account with no-ip, I got myself a host name <myname>.ddns.net.
    2. Then I setup the server using a domain name
    3. I configured the DNS by first setting up a primary zone - zone: ddns.net. Then added machine record host name: <myname> pointing to my server which I have configured my router to assign a static ip address to it at 192.168.x.x
    4. Then, I configured the VPN setting up for L2TP and PPTP, setup the shared secret, change the ip address range to match that of the DHCP range on my router. My router by default has a DHCP range between 64 - 253.
    5. Then, I also configured my router to port forward 500, 1701, 1723, and 4500 to my server at 192.168.x.x (I selected both TCP and UDP).
    6. Finally, setup a user account with account name test and password abcd12345
    7. Gone on my "client" machine which is basically my Samsung S4 handphone, selected VPN -> PPTP -> server address: <myname>.ddns.net -> entered account name test and password abcd12345.
    This didn't work.
Then, I read some post about manually configure DHCP on the server app. Went on the server app, turned on DHCP and setup a network named TestDHCP. Assigned ip address range between that of the default DHCP range on my BT Hub router.
    This does not work either.
Could someone please kindly help me with it? I am completely lost.
    Thank you in advance.

To run a public VPN server behind an NAT gateway, you need to do the following:
    1. Give the gateway either a static external address or a dynamic DNS name. The latter must be a DNS record on a public DNS registrar, not on the server itself. Also in the latter case, you must run a background process to keep the DNS record up to date when your IP address changes.
    2. Give the VPN server a static address on the local network, and a hostname that is not in the top-level domain "local" (which is reserved for Bonjour.)
    3. Forward external UDP ports 500, 1701, and 4500 (for L2TP) and TCP port 1723 (for PPTP) to the corresponding ports on the VPN server.
If your router is an Apple device, select the Network tab in AirPort Utility and click Network Options. In the sheet that opens, check the box marked
              Allow incoming IPSec authentication
if it's not already checked, and save the change.
With a third-party router, there may be a similar setting.
    4. Configure any firewall in use to pass this traffic.
    5. Each client must have an address on a netblock that doesn't overlap the one assigned by the VPN endpoint. For example, if the endpoint assigns addresses in the 10.0.0.0/24 range, and the client has an address on a local network in the 10.0.1.0/24 range, that's OK, but if the local network is 10.0.1.0/16, there will be a conflict. To lessen the chance of such conflicts, it's best to assign addresses in a random sub-block of 10.0.0.0./0 with a 24-bit netmask.
    6. "Back to My Mac" is incompatible with the VPN service. It must be disabled both on the server and on an AirPort router, if applicable.
If the server is directly connected to the Internet, see this blog post.

  • Vpn issue mac issue

We have a strange issue for one of our customers that recently migrated to our internet service.
They are trying to vpn to an external ip address not controlled by ourselves. The issue is only on one subnet and isolated to Mac’s, PCs in the same subnet also work fine. They were able to vpn from the MACs before they migrated to our INET solution. They previously used a checkpoint FW for their outside NAT and firewall and now are using a failover pair of asa 5510s. I have packet traced out the firewall and there should be nothing blocked. UDP ports 500 and 4500 are open to the destination ips from the correct subnets. All other subnets with Windows PCs can vpn out to external ip without issue. The users in that subnet with the MACs can also browse internet fine so the routing and nat overloading is also ok
When they try to initiate a connection from the macs i can see the connection/xlate coming in from a source port of  udp 4500/500 and also a destination of udp 4500/500 instead of a random source port. Just this evening we managed to get one device connected but no others. Would the fact that the source port is claiming 500 and 4500 stop the other macs using the same source ports at the same time to connect out?
They are using the onboard mac vpn client, he can’t get the Cisco one working at the minute.

Any help would be appreciated, bit of a strange one

    Brian,
Most Cisco devices will want to do negotiation source and destined port of UDP/500 or UDP/4500.
It should not matter whethere there are multiple connections unless there  something "smart" on the path.
On ASA we have this functionality:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/command/reference/i2.html#wp1761012
You might want to check if it's enabled or disabled.
I'm not sure why only Mac clients would be affected, that's odd. Typically Cisco clients and Mas' built in client are behaving almost in the same way during negotiation.
I think it might make sense to have our TAC investiagte the firewall if you're out of ideas ;-)

  • AnyConnect VPN on Mac - Can't SSH to Virtualbox Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I'm running AnyConnect version 3.1.05170 on my Mac.  I'm also doing SW Development on multiple Virtual Machines on my Mac via VirtualBox.  When I connect via VPN, I can no longer SSH to my Virtual Machines.  I'm sure there is a rules setting or something that is killing my "Host Only Network" in VirtualBox so I can no longer access them.  The worst part is that even if I Quit the AnyConnect Client, I still can't SSH to my Virtual Machines, so whatever rule is put in place doesn't go away when I disconnect the tunnel.
Has anyone witnessed this or have a suggestion on how to go about solving it?
    Thanks,
    - Curt

    Hello,
I just encountered the same problem. To solve it, I checked the box "Allow Local (LAN) access when using VPN (if configured)" in the preferences of AnyConnect.
It's working fine for me but I am using Parallels and not VirtualBox.
    Regards
    David

  • Need help sorting a 'self-populating' plist file (vpn on mac leopard server - 10.6.8)

i recently configured my mac snow leopard server using terminal and had it successfully working.
i could vpn internally and externally to my server at its location.
i one day started getting the message
"The connection has failed. Please verify your settings and try again"
    i did as the message said and everything remained the same;
    - server IP
    - shared secret
    - username and password
    - public IP address
    - com.apple.ppp.l2tp.plist stil, configured correctly
on a mission i thought id configure it the normal way by entering the data into the server admin panel and tried flicking the VPN service on and it wouldnt work, i was also getting an error saying it could not launch the com.apple.ppp.l2tp plist.
upon investigation i found out that i had installed (but not running) iVPN... so i uninstalled this...
still i could not get a VPN connection so i checked the com.apple.RemoteAccessServers.plist and noticed it had doubled in size (originally 4kb and now 8kb).
i thought this was a mistake and deleted it knowing it would self create a new fresh plist file.... HOWEVER it constantly populates the info twice as shown below:

Thinking i was half clever i thought id do a restore to when i first set the server up... not successful
Secondly i wiped the drive with zero data and did a fresh install... still not successful.
There must be a way to fix this BS error!
my source for the original setup was here: http://dreaming-artemis.com/2011/07/18/setting-up-vpn-on-the-imac-osx-snow-leopa rd-10-6-8/
    Thanks in advance

I would think you could copy them over using rsync, which is part of the OS X server package.  If you're not familiar with rsync there is a tutorial here:
    http://everythinglinux.org/rsync/
Skip the stuff about installing and configuring rsync and just go to the part about using it to copy files between servers.

  • VPN for Mac. Want to create VPN between Mac and Windows XP

Hey everyone, I'm looking to try and create a VPN for when I'm in college between my Desktop I'll have in my dorm (running Windows XP) and my Macbook Pro (running Mac 10.5). I have a printer and an external hard drive hooked up to my desktop, and I want to make it so that only I can access it through the VPN.
    Is this possible?

    Hi soccerdude21490-
    +Is this possible?+
Theoretically yes. However, it would be up to the school to allow you access through their network.
The first step would be to contact the school's IT department and ask them if they will allow such a connection, and if so, could they please provide you with the settings (ip address etc.).
    Luck-

  • Solution: mac mini and lcd

    Hello there
For several days, I have read all of your postings regarding to display and Mac Mini.
I must admit I was about to send my Mac mini to Apple and get my money back, however, fortunately I found a small tool called SwitchRes X. Neither Apple Technical Service nor retailer were able to fix my mac so that the solution had to be found by my own.
I use my Mac mini in combination with Samsung SyncMaster 193P (DVI). Since date of delivery, I had not been able to use my mac in resolutions: 1280x960 and 1280x1024 60 Hz, 75 Hz – till today. Now, it is working in 1280 x 1024, 57Hz/58 Hz without any problem at all.
This useful tool helps you manage the frequency and resolution of all monitors. Its enormous advantage is to create new resolutions that Apple doesn’t display natively.
You can try SwitchRes X without any limitation for a persiod of 10 days – after that, the software must be registrated. I am sure that most of reported issues can be resolved by SwitchRes.
For more information, please go to www.madrau.com
I would be happy to hear some positive experience you made with.
    Greetings from Germany

How do find the Samsung SyncMaster 193P? I'm considering purchasing a similar monitor for my new mini (when I get it hopefully next week).
But I understand that the 193P+ (which is the one available here) can only be adjusted (wrt brightness, for instance) with software. Is this true for your 193P and, if so, do you find the Mac version of Samsung's MagicTune fully functional?
The Samsung Syncmaster 193P is the best monitor I ever had. Up to now, I have worked with Hyundai, Sony, Belinea, EIZO and NEC. Before buying I tried several LCD monitors and couldn’t believe Samsung’s quality on my Win XP and Mac as well.
As you wrote, it can unfortunately be adjusted with software which also is available for Mac OS X. MagicTune for Windows supports more functions – you can modify frequency for example. With MagicTune for Mac you can only adjust brightness and contrast for instance. In spite of Samsung’s confirmed Mac contability – I needed to install SwitchRes X to correct some issues regarding to frequency (DVI).

  • PPTP VPN on Mac OS X Sever 10.3.9 - Unable to Authenticate Users

When attemping to connect to a VPN that I've set up on an Xserve running OS X server 10.3.9, Internet Connect shows 'Contating Server' -> 'Negotiating' -> 'Disconnecting' and then reports that authentication failed.
After much reading on these and other forums I believe I've figured why I'm having this issue and that would be that none of the users on the xserve have 'Open Directory' type passwords. So what I'm hoping is that someone here can help with how in fact I could add a user and set their password to OD type.
I've read on these boards that you can have a user with an OD password type without having the server be an 'Open Directory Master/Replica'. Is this true? And in any case, is anyone able to tell me the simplest way of setting up a user with an Open Directory password?
    Powerbook G4 12" 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for that, using root with NeST did the trick, it gave root an OD password and enabled me to set other users' passwords to that type also.
As I'm new at setting up VPN's, I have a further question, but to briely explain my setup: I have an Xserve (static ip: 192.168.1.100), which is the server that is running the vpn and is connected to an Airport Basestation (192.168.1.1), and also a web server (static ip: 192.168.1.240). So my question is how do I enable access to the webserver over the VPN? Currently when I connect to the vpn I can't access the webserver, not can I ping its ip (nor any other ip on the remote network for that matter).
In the 'Client Information' tab of the VPN service 'DNS servers' is set to: 192.168.1.1, 'Search Domains' is blank, and there are no routing definitions.
