Simulating chorus from a single vocal track?

Hi guys,
I'd like to simulate a choir by using a single vocal track. What's the best way to go about doing that in Soundtrack Pro?
Thanks for any tips!!
Nick

To achieve this, you'd have to copy the voice a couple of times, and stretch & detune each copy. Fortunally there are plugins that can perform that task. The industry standard is 'Melodyne'. It's around 800 bucks, but I found a more friendly priced, and free plugin as well! They're all .AU plugins, so they can be used in STP.
Take look at Manifold & Autotalent on [KVR Plugin Database|http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=results&st=adv&soft%5B%5D=e&type% 5B%5D=90&type%5B%5D=91&type%5B%5D=58&f%5B%5D=au&osx=1&free=1&com=1&sf=0&receptor =&de=0&sort=1&rpp=30]

  • How to create a warm full chorus effect on a vocal track? What effects, plugins or methods to use?

Hey, I am using Logic pro 9 and have been for quite sometime now. The reason I am here today is because I want to know how to create a warm, more full, (almost doubling) chorus effect for my vocal hooks for the hip-hop tracks that I create. I have always heard that type of effect on hooks and never knew how they did it. For example in this song (This song is not my song, excuse the language but this is the type of effect i am looking for. Go to 1:12 of the song)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aok9Hq7GQ4
This is what I am looking for. PLEASE SOME ONE HELP I WOULD REALLY APPRICATEIT!! Thanks

True, the equipment that I am using does matter and at the moment I am only using a usb microphone with no pre amps or audio interface. I was asking that question to know what methods people use to create that chorusĀ  effect. What I did for the time being until I get my new set up I had a main vocal track that was centered and had no effect on it, then made 2 other copies so I had 3 tracks all together I panned one track all the way left and the other track all the way right then I applied the stereo spreader to the two copied tracks and turned the mix 76% channel delay 250 same intensity 100% and speed 1.644 Hz. Then I manually moved the tracks so that the left panned track came first then the main track then the right panned track. It was very small moves not to the point were you could tell just gave it that chorus effect. Do you think those were the right things to do? So its close almost there and maybe with the new setup it will be what I am looking for. But PLEASE KEEP COMMENTING EVERYONE HAS THERE OWN METHODS I AM CURIOUS TO KNOW YOURS!

  • Removing vocal track from soundtrack

I'm a soccer mom who takes photos of my daughter's soccer games, pulls them into iMovie and puts them together with music. If I'm just doing this for personal use, is there a way in iMovie or GarageBand to remove the vocal track from a song? Is there some other software that can do this?

Nope; vocals are "baked in" as part of the mix: there's no way to "extract" a vocal from a recording..
..except that if the vocal's mono right at the imaginary 'centre' of the stereo, and the music's in stereo, you can - with patience, the right software, or by just wiring one of your speakers back to front and re-recording what comes out of them both - "reverse phase" one of the stereo channels.
That will subtract the vocal from the overall mix, and leave you with just the backing music - possibly sounding a little "thin" or a bit distant - and no singing! (..Kenny Everett, the Liverpudlian DJ used to do that regularly on the radio with Beatles songs to turn them into singalong karaoke tracks..)
So experiment: reverse the phase of either the left or right track of a stereo pair: you can select a left or right channel in the (..now..) rather expensive 'Sound Studio' and 'Invert' it..
..but although the (..free..) 'Audacity' (click that blue link) offers the 'Invert' option, I can't quite see how to select just one channel and invert just that..
    ..Maybe someone else knows how!
But this only works if the vocals are dead centre in the "sound stage" (..i.e; when you wear headphones or stand between the speakers the voice comes out dead in the centre). It won't work properly if the voice is also in stereo and spreads across between left and right.
(N.B: The dining room of the Hotel Valadier in Rome has one of its speakers wired the wrong way round, so Bob Dylan's lyrics and voice are completely missing when they play, erm, is it, er, either John Wesley Harding or Lay Lady Lay..?)

  • Sending vocal tracks to an Aux channel with reverb

Sorry for this question that may have been answered somewhere else.
I'm trying to add a single reverb plug-in to 6 vocal tracks. I've bussed all 6 to an Aux channel via bus 1, setting the input of the Aux channel to bus 1. No sound. I can't seem to find the correct routing. Anyone know the answer to this simple task. I'm coming from ProTools where I had no problem with this.
    Thanks.

Are you actually sending some of each of the six tracks to the bus?
(little knobs next to the bus assignment under "sends")
Do you have the Aux or any of the 6 tracks muted?
DO you have the master muted?

  • Doubling a vocal track?

Is there any plugin (or technique for that matter) in Logic 8 that would allow me to "double" a vocal track (to improve the "thickness", etc)? I mean, short of re-singing multiple tracks.
    Thanks

If you just copy a track and time shift it, you'll get a simple echo. To make it a more convincing "doubling," also add a little chorus, roll off the high frequencies a bit, drop the volume to about half, and pan it away from the lead voice a bit.
Good suggestion... The problem with this though, and the delayed track, is that it's stagnant... the delay and the chorus are stationary to the lead vocal, where as a real double moves around it... it's a bit early, it's a bit late, it's right on, the pitch is sharp, the pitch is flat, the pitch is dead on, the tone is brighter, the tone is darker, the tone is right on... and this is ALL happening along with the main vocal.
But if you must do this electronically, may I suggest taking the chorus idea one step further...
Try this: Copy the track. Scoot it forward a sub-frame or so. Put a sample delay plug-in on that track, set to 0 samples. Now put Logic's Pitch shifter on that track...Semi-Tones and Cents set to 0, Mix set to 100%.
Now, using automation, randomly adjust the sample delay parameter, so that on a word or two it's around 0 (ahead of the original vocal), and then moving the sample parameter later, it's behind the original vocal. This has to happen very fast, on a word by word basis ("word" as in language, not as in digital clocking...)
Same thing with the pitch plug-in. Automate the "Cents" parameter quickly, and in small amounts.
This, in my opinion, will yield more realistic results electronically, than just a delay and/or chorus, if you are going for a natural sounding double....using what's available within Logic.
The catch here, is that in the time it takes you to do this effectively, you could have sung doubles to every song on your album, and had a sandwich...

  • Upgraded to 7.3.1 and audio files are corrupted -- missing vocal tracks

Just upgraded a work computer to itunes 7.3.1 and my music files are now playing without vocal tracks and very poor audio quality.
it's a cheapo work computer, HP with a celeron processor.
    Any suggestions?

Same problem here. upgrade seemed to go OK, but audio quality in library songs is crap.
Demo tunes from itunes store sound great, so it seems my library is corrupted.

But nothing gets simulated. I know that if I put in video with the audio in the track I won't get this error but should I have to?

  • HT1711 how do I find the top 5 songs from a single artist!!

How do I find the top 5 songs from a single artist?

If you have unchecked the compilation tag on the CD tracks before you ripped them, then what you are describing shouldn't be happening. Are you sure you are unchecking the compilation tag for all of the tracks on the CD before you rip them?
Unfortunately, you cannot change the default directory structure that iTunes rips albums into. You can feel free to move files after they are ripped, but iTunes will always rip them into its Artist/Album/Track #_Track Name format.

  • Missing Vocal Tracks

Lately I've been experiencing this weird thing where random vocal tracks from my Garageband files are going missing. I'll open a song I did about a year or so ago or even a couple of months ago and as it's loading files it will inform me that tracks are missing. If I look in the Package Contents, they are, indeed, gone. This seems to be isolated to only my Garageband files -- my Logic Studio files don't seem to have this problem.

I also encountered this issue with part of a movie commentary track I am recording.

  • Switching back and forth between keys on vocal track

I followed the instructions in the garage band tutorial for changing key (pitch?) of a vocal track for part of the project. Doesn't seem to work the way they suggest - calling up master track, adding a point on the automation line where I want change to begin and raising automation line on other side to raise pitch. No change seems apparent.
This vocal track is actually a rap that involves a person talking to a bug. I recorded the rap in key of D, want to raise pitch of the part that has the bug 'talking' to give it cartoony effect. I tested it on whole track by changing key normal way and raising key from 'D' to 'G' seemed to have best 'feel' for what I want. Can I switch keys back and forth in Garage Band and if so, how?
I also have Soundtrack installed with my Final Cut Pro, but would like to stick with Garage Band for this project if possible.
    Judy

if you read the docs, your own recordings are not affected by the master pitch.
for your project it probably makes more sense to use the Vocal Transformer effect anyway (the alternate choice would be to use the Region Pitch control in the Track Editor)

  • Putting a single audio track on iphone

I want to occasionally put a single audio track on my iphone from my Windows 7 PC.
The original format will probably be mp3. (In some cases it might be wma.)
I want to be able to select a single track and convert it to whatever's easiest to allow me to put it on my iphone. Please note I don't use itunes for audio/music.
Can I do this without itunes? In any case, looking for specific steps as I'm only familiar with using Windows Media Player with an mp3 player.

Odd, tried to edit original post, but when I clicked save, it failed.
I think I found the answer... have to use itunes, apparently there's a way to browse to a single file and import just that one then have to sync it with the iphone somehow.
If that's wrong I welcome corrections. Thanks.

  • What happened to my vocal track?

I've been working on my first project using LP8 (migrating from DP5). The other night, I completed a vocal track which took me several overdubs to complete. Afterwards, I used Antares Autotune 5 in manual edit mode to touch-up a few pitch issues. Everything was working great. I saved the project and shut down for the night.
Last night, I opened to project to do some more work and it appers that my vocal track is corrupted. Everything plays fine up to the first punched-in portion of the audio track and from that point on my vocal is out of sync with all of the other tracks. A) It wasn't like this when I saved it the other night. B) There also appears to be a sync isseue with Autotune, becuase it is doing the corrections in the wrong locations as well. Did I do something wrong, or is this a bug that needs a support call?
PS- I've used the same instance of Autotune on my DP5 projects without any problems for over a year now.
    Thanks all!
    Lee

    Hi,
Had the same problem - it has something to do with comping, not Autotune.
    1) Unpack the comped track in the dropdown on the left end portion of the audio take.
    2) Select all the parts in your vocal take.
    3) Go to Audio dropdown above the time line an select "Move Region to Original Record Position"
Once the parts are in the right place I would bounce the part to simplify the arrange window.
Parts 1-3 of this solution was posted by someone else - many thanks to him.
    I think this should work.

  • Unable to delete extra tracks that vocal tracking created while recording vocals.

I Was tracking some vocals, so I selected the vocal tracking preset. It created more tracks every time I did a re take, even though I erased the unwanted take. Now I am left with 3 extra sub tracks under my vocal track. I would love to condense it, just can't figure out how to do it.

The whole situation is going to be made a little more frustrating, because the code behind all of this is Fraunhofer's, not Adobe's. Adobe has to licence the codec from them, so if anything weird is happening with it on a different platform it may not be their fault at all. But because so few of us are Mac users, the collective information available will be scant - unless the developers get a handle on it.

@#$%ING BEST MOVE I HAVE EVER MADE, AND SHOULD HAVE DONE IT A LONG TIME AGO!!!
Anyway, my DJ Applications run like a Mack Truck on steroids, the MAC itself just idles along like it's on a stroll through the park, and my mind is now 100% on the job instead of constantly worrying about the performance issues of my hardware.
Well there's the thing - my experience of Macs has been completely different. Laptops with the power supply connection held on by a magnet? That's not a sensible approach to anything - the number I've now seen held on by gaffer tape is considerable. And functionally they've been anything but wonderful - they seem to get hung up just as much as any PC I've ever experienced. As far as performance issues with PCs are concerned - well with my DAW, which is a clean machine, I've never had any performance issues at all. In comparative tests, there's no real advantage with Mac OS over - well, at least XP (although I'm not so sure about anything since that...)
I'd say that with either platform, you need to keep your machine relatively clean if you want to retain performance. Nowadays there's very little difference in hardware terms - except that you are held to ransom by Apple's prices; it's all down to which OS you can cope with with least aggravation.
