Since 10.5.3 update both my printers fail to auto quit

Since updating to 10.5.3 both my printers fail to auto quit after printing and stay in the dock. Auto Quit is checked on both. They are an HP Business Inkjet 1200D connected via USB and a Macally USB2 hub to the iMac and an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 connected Bonjour via a Netgear DG834PN modem router with a Cat6 10/100 Ethernet cable. Before 10.5.3, they both auto quit with no problems. I have done all the usual things like verifying hard discs on both my Intel iMac and Macbook, repairing permissions, clearing caches (boot, user, kernel, font, applications etc - all that are shown on Onyx), running daily, weekly and monthly scripts etc. All with no improvement - anyone got any ideas?

I agree that 10.5.3 needs some urgent work. I gather 10.5.4 has already been seeded. My CPU use also now looks like a mountain range from Lord of the Rings, although I think my MacBook is actually running a little cooler if anything. However there seem to be lots of complaints of CPU spiking and fans going crazy, with no universal solutions. My guess is that the code has gotten so large that curing one fault, introduces two others. I wonder if we will look back at Tiger as the peak of OS X. I have left Tiger on my wife's G5 iMac and I get no complaints. I think I would be mad to upgrade her to Leopard.
I will try deleting my printers and reinstalling but I did that not long ago, trying to cure the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 fault after a firmware update that if connected via Ethernet, it keeps reporting no print heads installed and then after a minute or so, changes its mind and although still reporting no print heads, amazingly manages to print the image.

    In Tiger, when I printed something, a print icon appeared in the Dock while the document was printing . . . but as soon as the print job was finished, the icon went away.
    In Leopard, this isn't happening. When I print, the printer icon appears, but when the print job is finished, the icon stays in the Dock.
    One helpful friend mentioned right-clicking on the icon and selecting "Auto Quit". This seemed like a great idea, but unfortunately, it hasn't worked. The Auto-Quit now has a check-mark next to it, but it still doesn't quit.
    I have three completely different printers in two different locations (home and office) and they all exhibit the same problem.

    I poked around and that was the preference file that remembers if you have the printer set to auto-quit or not. So, it would seem to not be related to the preference that's supposed to remember that setting.
    We could take the preference file troubleshooting a step further. Since it did work correctly with the new user, it's pretty clear it's a preference file not a system-wide problem. You could drag your whole user's Preferences folder to the Desktop, log out and then log back in. A new Preferences folder will be created. Check to see if the printers are working correctly now. This will not affect the items inside your iTunes or iPhoto library nor your Safari bookmarks.
    If the printers are behaving now, you could drag a few of your preference files into the new Preferences folder in the Library. Then you should log out and log back in to make sure everything continues to work. Chances are, for example, it's probably not the Front Row preference that was causing the problem, so put the com.apple.frontrow.plist file into the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder, log out and log back in. Or you could just recreate your preferences from the various applications or System Preferences. I would probably avoid the com.apple.dock.plist file though, that may be related. I would suggest you just re-add the various applications you want into the Dock.

    You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours.  If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
    You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for).  You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
    You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content.

    My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

    - Have you reset your iPod:
    Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
    button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next would be to backup your iPod and then restore you iPod from backup via iTunes.

  • Why do I constantly have to restart my phone daily since the 4.3 update and why are there zero answers or help from Verizon or Samsung?

    Ever since the 4.3 update, which I waited until end of January 2014 to download, My phone has been messed up. Some of the problems I solved on my own since Verizon and Samsung both refused to help me. I fixed the charging problem by using an HTC Incredible charger since Samsung's charger is garbage since the update. Battery drain is also a constant issue. Ram is ALWAYS full which should be a good thing but clearing it out completely and killing off all Google apps seems to make my phone all of a sudden fly and work super fast. As the day goes on I am unable to clear all of these unwanted items from being open and bogging down my phone. Most of the apps doing this are the preloaded ones you don't need. I am forced to restart my phone to get the memory cleared at least 2-4 times a day. Verizon tells me this is normal. Samsung hangs up on me when I call. Why do I have to restart this phone just to get it to work like it should after a few hours of being on? Does Verizon care about customers or just money?

    @Verizon Wireless Customer Support. I have the 4.3 version that I got with the awful update. I waited until the end of January to download it and guess what was never fixed? Your update. Its been months and battery drain is not better at all. I have replaced with a new battery and it was the same problem. I have used safe mode numerous times and it does not do anything either other than annoy me some more. I have done a factory reset on my phone since the update I downloaded in January 47 times so far. It didn't do anything but erase everything and I had to start all over. Google apps are a major reason my phone is lagging. Once I force stop them the phone has incredible speed, when the Google apps are on, the phone lags. The internet browser is also super slow. 56k dial up has faster speeds than my mobile browser and I have full 4g lte bars. Its beyond annoying because when ever I call Verizon customer service I am told nothing is wrong. If I break the phone into a million pieces you would still tell me its working properly. This problem persists on a daily basis. I now restart my phone 4 to 6 times daily. I am starting to wonder why the quality of your company is getting worse and worse?     iTunes sync error at the photo sync step with an unknown error 1140.
    I have restarted everything, unsynced & attempted re sync to no avail.
    The photo sync screen only allows me to select the sync all option, the select specific events, albums etc . Choice is greyed out.
    This is true for both my iPhone 4S and ipad2.

    I think I have figured it out, and photos are syncing now.
    Here is what I believe happened: There is an iTunes generated folder called "iPod Photo Cache" in my "Pictures" folder on my Airpot Disk. This folder gets generated by iTunes whenever you designate a location for syncing. The "iPod Photo Cache" folder contains a file called "Photo Database".
    It looks like the "Photo Database" had been corrupted. Deleting this file, or alternatively, moving my pictures to a new folder and letting iTunes regenerate the Photo Database fixed the problem.

    Ever since the last iTunes update, my cloud movies and TV purchases all vanished from my iTunes library.  I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, but Show Cloud Purchases isn't there.  So, I go to the store, then click on purchases, and I download anything from my iTunes account.  Now, I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, and it is back.  I check the box, and my cloud purchases are again back in iTunes.
    OK, I wouldn't bother posting this, but a day or so later, it all happens again.  Cloud purchases gone, no option to fix in the Settings>Store menu until I go to the store and download something again. 
    How do I get iTunes for Windows to keep showing my cloud purchases without having to do this silly work-around every day or two?

    Audiobooks are not avaiable for redownload from iTunes, though I suspect you may find they are still on your computer even if not currently listed in your library. This may help...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
    In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!
    Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
    Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

    Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply.  Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself.  I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues. 
    This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative.  This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved.  I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question. 
    BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.}  No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you. 
    So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
    Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

  • Software Update for Brother printers disabled my printer

    This morning I installed a Software Update for Brother printers and now I can't print.  Every time I try, I was gettting an error message that says some of my software is missing and it asked if I wanted to install it.  A window opened looked like it was looking in Software Update and it didn't find any software.  I deleted the printer in Printers and Faxes and downloaded the CUPS driver from Brother that says it's compatible with OS 10.7.  Now I can't add the printer.  When I go through the steps to add the printer, for Print Using I select HL-2140 series, which is the model of my printer.  I click on Add and the Add Printer window starts looking for the printer software, but I think it's looking in Software Update.  The message comes up "the software for this printer is currently unavailabe.  Please contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software.  I did that, but how can I get it to use the driver I downloaded from Brother instead of looking for it in Software Update?

    This helped with both my Brother printer and my HP AIO.  I was having marginal printer function after installing OS X Lion, then replace the Airport Express with an Airport Extreme.  That knocked out everything....After several days of loading and reloading programs in different permutations, this relatively simple step was the charm.

    You can both share the same Apple ID for purchases but i suggest one of you use another email for the use of iMessage, Facetime etc.
    It is easy to do, the easiest way is to set up an iCloud email directly from your iPhone. Once set up one of you will use this for iCloud services but both still use the existing Apple ID to make purchases.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!  I can't access iCloud on my iPhone OR iPad since the iOS 7 update!  It asks me to sign in, displays an old email address I don't use anymore and won't give me the option to CHANGE the email address - so OF COURSE my password is going to be wrong! 

    If you still have access to your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email account and verify it.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You should then be able to turn off Find My iPhone with your current password. Turn it off on both of your devices, then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back and change your primary email address and iCloud ID back to the way it was.  You will then be able to go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current ID and password to reconnect to your iCloud account.
    If you don't have access to your old email address, you will have to contact Apple to get them to reset the password for it so you can disable Find My iPhone and sign into your iCloud account.  You will have to prove your identity to them in order to do so.  You can either contact iTunes support for assistance with this (https://ssl.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html), or contact Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

  • Call connection issues since iOS 8.1 update

    Ever since the iOS 8 update on mine & wife's iPhones (5s & 5c) we have had nothing but issues with receiving various phone calls, even with the newer updates with bif fixes etc the problem persists. We have tried to remedy it by turning off the 4g option as we heard this was a solution but no change. Same with wifi also. It's not a network problem as we have a very good signal. Like I said we have had this problem from the moment iOS 8 arrived, we're now on iOS 8.1, still no change. Does anyone have a clue to fix this?

    Same issue here, both my boyfriend and I updated our iPads and iPhones to 8.1, now FT crashes constantly, when we try to FT from iPhone to iPad we just get "connecting" and nothing happens. If we do iPhone wifi to iPhone cellular we get same "connecting" problem. If we do iPhone to iPhone and enable cellular it connects. When we do iPad wifi to iPad wifi it connects but then crashes constantly. I have tried ft with others who have not done the updates and it works fine Using the same Internet connection. We have switched to skype to video chat and it works just fine, so it can't be an Internet issue.

    I use a HP Compaq Presario laptop, and have done so for about 7 years. I downloaded the io7 update for my iPhone 4s 3 weeks ago, and now when I try to connect the phone to my laptop via the cable, it connects briefly but disconnects.     I don't know exactly what you mean. If you mean when I got the phone, yes it was set up as a new one with nothing on. If you mean when I updated it, no- it had everything on when it was updating. The backup had actually stopped backing up at that point, i think, because of icloud running out of memory (despite it still having 1.7 gb left that I could backup info to). If you mean whether I have tried that, no. Many things that I need are backed up to the iCloud and many more aren't, and I am currently in the process of getting rid of things so it can do another backup, but with 2000 odd photos to sort through, it takes time, Music takes up loads of memory, but I don't know how to delete songs. I also have apps with data that doesn't get backed up or anything, so I would lose that. I can't really do the math, but today I got a thing saying that it hadn't been backed up in 6 weeks, so I don't know if the last backup was before or after iOS 8.
    I am unsure whether i'll give it a try because even if it is hardware related, I won't be able to afford a new/second-hand phone or a repair for it for a while. Especially since it's out of warranty by a load if I am right. And even when I could afford it, I would be looking at upgrading to a newer iPhone because of iOS 8 being the last and stuff like that.
    I don't know if this has any relevance, but I have also been having Wi-Fi and battery issues. The Wi-Fi issue being where it'll just disconnect by itself for a few seconds, and then return back, or sometimes I have to go through to settings and then Wi-Fi, and it'll realize there is internet and then connect to it, without me having to press anything. The battery issue being where it dies before it says it reaches at least 10% (once it died at 30%, most of the time it would be around 20% though) or it says it has 1% left but it lasts over 20 minutes still. As said already, I don't know if these have any relevance.
