Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro freezes randomly

Since I upgraded my MacBook Pro (shipped last October) to Lion, it randomly freezes.
It lasts roughly 4-5 minutes where I cannot do anything. The only running apps are Google Chrome, Skype and Twitter. All are a their latest version.
Anyone having the same issue ? Any hint ?

Try these
Reset SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
PRAM/NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Hardware Test
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then backup your files to a external drive and disconnect.
Reboot holding command + r keys and enter the Recovery Partition and see if you can reinstall 10.7 over the installed version.
You might have some third party program incompatibility issue if this doesn't resolve it.

Since upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro is super slow connecting to Wi-Fi (seems to search forever).  This is not the case with my Daughter's MacBook (still on Snow Leopard) or my Wife's Dell (Windows 7).  Any ideas?

Hold Option when you click on the Airport in the top bar & post the stats.

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between  Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • Since upgrading to yosemite my MacBook Pro want detect my external display

Since upgrading to yosemite my macbook pro won't detect my external display ?

Here's an Apple Discussions thread that might help. It suggests using Disk Utility to repair permissions to fix the following issue, which I just found on my system:
User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.
Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.
If Repair Permissions doesn't do the trick (because it doesn't stick across sleep and restarts), helpful user "lplacencia" has provided some Terminal commands to patch up the files as needed. With any luck a 10.10.1 update will address this soon!
I haven't had a chance to test this fix yet, but I will do so later tonight. Meanwhile I can report that booting up in Safe Mode didn't make any difference for me. My system includes MacPorts (which includes some running services) so I might need to eliminate that factor, if Disk Utility doesn't help.
A total clean install would have to be my next step. (And I might try that anyway just to see if it's a problem in Yosemite generally.) It's not possible to download the Yosemite full installer from Apple through a public website, but you can save the installer and use it to re-install without having to download it again.

  • Since upgrading to Maverick my macbook pro randomly shuts down all the time, no idea why...

Since I upgraded to Maverick, my Macbook Pro shuts down quite often without warning. No idea why.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Lost data after upgrade to Lion on Macbook Pro

Hi. I recently upgraded to Lion on my Macbook Pro and after a crash, my data was lost. The documents and downloads folders were empty. Fortunately I have a PC backup of the data and when I tried to restore the music to Itunes I was getting error messages about my MAC hard disk being full. Is the data still there? If so where? As it is not showing and a search for music on the hard disk yielded nothing. The capacity of my HD is 250GB and before the upgrade it had about 125GB free. I suspect the data was not removed but merely 'marked for deletion' and parked somewhere during the upgrade.

You posted in the OS 10.3 (Panther) & below. Suggest you repost in the Lion forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • During upgrade to Lion on Macbook Pro the upgrade stops at OS utilites after rebooting asking to restore from time machine backup or install new copy

My Daughter is currently upgrading her MacBook Pro to OS X Lion.  During the upgrade the system rebooted and then stops at the OS X Utilites menu.  I have installed this same upgrade on My MacBook Pro and the family iMAC without issue.  Did the upgrade encounter a problem?  The only options are to Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall Mac OS X, Get help, or Disk Utility.
I'm not sure how recient the backup is on the TimeMachine for her system and she is concered that she may loose a lot of updates she has made to iTunes and iPhoto.
    Please help.

I have 8 GB of RAM, but would that even matter during install? Performance once installed and running sure, but I questiong whether the installer would demand that much more, or why it would affect mountain lion when restoring from a time machine backup.

  • Upgrading to Lion on MacBook Pro: Can I turn of that new auto save feature?

I am going to be upgrading (or downgrading - yikes!) to Lion.
Is there any way to turn off that new feature that saves every single version of a document?
And, will Lion in anyway change my years worth of stored files totalling 60 GB? It is important for me to preserve them intact for various legal purposes, i.e. I cannot have a document created or modified on June 1, 2002 changed to today's date. Could that happen?
Much love to all those helping people make the transition to Lion (THAT INCLUDES YOU KAPPY)!
PS: I am currently running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 5,1 -- Has anyone in the class of 5,1 upgraded to Lion yet? Thoughts?

Yeah but Eww this auto save thing is insane!
Why?  Are you under the mistaken impression that it stores multiple full copies of a document?  That is not the case.  Only the changes are stored to minimize the extra space used.
After all my years of seeing people wish for auto-save features, I never guessed that when they got it people would be wishing to NOT have it...
So is the amount of space that gets eaten up
What amount of space is that?  By what?
I think you're paying too much attention to people having problems.  That's basically ALL you get here.  This is where people come with problems.  So the information you're getting here has a serious selection bias...  you're not hearing what all the people who are NOT having problems have to say.
This is nothing like the tiger to Leopard change or the Leopard to snow leopard change
You're right, this is much more minor.  I'm actually surprised by how quickly things seem to be calming down here.  These forums were in a serious turmoil for months after SL's release!
AND this update is taking away our right to those minor customizations that make our Mac OUR Mac
How so?  Again, it sounds like you're listening to the wrong people or pulling "facts" out of thin air.  My MBP is just as customized in Lion as it was in SL, and is running quite smoothly.

  • Upgrade to Lion on Macbook Pro

I purchased my Macbook Pro in April, 2007.  Still runs very well.  I have OS X 10.6.8.  Want to upgrade to Lion.  My processor is 2.16 Ghz. Memory 1 GB.  Need 2 GB at least for Lion, so need to purchase more memory.  On Apple web site they sell 2 GB and 4 GB memory, but for 2.2 Ghz and up.  They do not note 2.16. Does this matter or do I need to also update my Intel Core Duo to 2.2 or higher?  Or can I purchase 2GB or 4GB memory and install and things will be fine? Thanks.  Mark.

You ought to purchase your RAM at OWC or DMEM where you will find it's much less expensive than what Apple charges. You can purchase any RAM just so long as it meets the specifications for your model.
I also suggest you get more than 2 GBs if you plan to upgrade to Lion. At least 4 GBs would be my suggestion.

  • Since upgrade to lion on Mac pro the atv2 connection is extremely slow

I upgraded my macro to lion and since then it takes 3 min to pull up the library and times out when trying to down load the show.  It worked fine under snow leopard. I have removed and redone the home sharing on both ATV2 and macro still have the same issues.

    DSKELLY wrote:
    My system operates flawlessly...
Which raises the question of why would you want to upgrade? Lion is largely cosmetic, and a lot of those cosmetic differences are not pretty
    - removal of coloured icons in finder sidebar, making navigation more difficult
    - no scroll bar arrows making navigation more difficult (essential if you need fine control of scrollling to move around in design progs like Illustrator/ Quark),
    - autosave and versions, making everything more difficult through hideous beach balling on large photoimage files in preview or keynote if you make multiple and rapid minor changes
    - dodgy compatibility with some versions of photoshop
    - less control over where to keep your folder (apps have to be assiged to the app folder)
    - less control over what information remains on your hard disk hidden from you (including versions of your personal files).
    - if you use magic trackpad on your MP, you also loose the 4-finger swipe 'app switcher' gesture
On top of  all these 'features' you get given:
    - mission control, which is less configurable than spaces
    - launchpad, which is effectively the same as having 'stacks' and 'grid' options set on your app folder in the dock, only lunchpad takes over your whole screen and is harder to navigate.
Now, that's all IMHO opinion, of course. As someone further up in this thread advised, whatever you do use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your current installation. If all is to your liking, you can always use that disk as a regular backup drive. If all is not, the way back to your flawless system is just a five-minute reboot away.

  • On OSX Lion, My MacBook Pro freezes with rainbow on log in screen.

When I restart or shut down the rainbow circle shows up on my log in screen. I've also noticed a slight battery life changed. My MacBook Pro is 2.4GHz Core i5. I taught the update OSX Lion 10.7.1 helped but it didn't.
    Please Help. Thanks.

Yep, because unchecking the 'Automatic graphics switching' uses your AMD or GeForce graphics card instead of the low power usage Intel onboard graphics. This is why I don't use the login screen. I just automatically log in. I'd rather have Apple fix the login screen lockup in a future dot release.
To see what I mean, click on the Apple in the upper left corner of your menu bar, then 'About this Mac' then the 'More Info...' button and look at the Graphics. It should say your AMD or GeForce graphics card. When that checkbox is checked and you log in, the Graphics info should show your Intel onboard graphics card.

  • Macbook pro freezes randomly (spinning wheel of death)

I just got a macbook pro refresh and the thing randomly freezes without warning. Once it's locked up the wheel just spins, I can't access Activity Monitor, can't do anything. I think it's a pretty good computer but, aside from freezing and basically totally breaking randomly. What's up with this? Do the people at Mac not test equipment before selling it to their users. If you google "mac freezes" you get tons of hits, but none of them seem to have the solution. Any help? Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro freezes randomly, but can trigger it also

I have a Macbook Pro that I use for work. Randomly it will freeze on me and will be unresponsive. Any device, like external disks or my iPhone will disconnect immediately when this happens. I have run the Apple Hardware Test dvd that came with it. It does have RAM installed by my IT but the full hardware test did not show any issues.
Although it is typically random. It appears to happen more frequently while I am on battery.
I can trigger it almost immediately if I am on battery power, I launch iTunes and I play any movie. It will freeze within minutes. Playing the movie, minimized, full screen, etc always results in the Mac freezing.
Very infrequently along with the freezing the Mac will emit from it's speakers a harsh noise. It is coming from the audio system, as it will play through my headphones when I have them plugged in. This probably the most jarring, as when I am commuting on the train and it does this, it frightens the other passengers.
Every time it crashes I have to hold the power down to shut the computer off.
Again, this is my work computer and I need it to do my job. There are no replacements at my work.
What options are available to me? Ideally I would like to get Apple to replace it. But it is defiantly past the 30 day return policy.
    Thank you for your help!
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP51.0074.B01
    SMC Version: 1.33f8
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

Your MBP should never freeze. Freezing can have several causes, and it's possible to do some troubleshooting here, but it may be best to just take it in to Apple or call. You ran the AHT, but there are other things to try.
Try the original Apple RAM. The AHT does not always find RAM issues. If no freezing with the original RAM, there may be a problem with the new RAM. (If you go to the Apple Store, put back the original RAM. If you don't they may blame everything on the new RAM and not look further.) Also check in the System Profiler to be sure all of your RAM is recognized.
    Reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
    Try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
Back up all of your data, and reinstall the OS, preferably using an Archive and Install:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
These are things they would likely have you try anyway, so you may as well go ahead and try them to see if anything helps. Very likely they won't seriously look for hardware issues until you have eliminated software issues.
You are still under warranty, so they will fix whatever is wrong.
    Good luck!
