Single Instance Storage - WIMs

Consider this:
You update a WIM file which is fairly large.  You have 300 DP's, and until any particular DP receives the changes, you'll get a "hash value is not correct" on any OSD task sequences using that WIM.
Someone came up with the idea:
Have two different WIMs that you rotate.  Have Image A assigned to the task sequence, and update Image B when you have a change.  Once Image B is everywhere, change the task sequence to use Image B.  Next change to the image goes to Image
A.
Well, it seems both Single-instance storage along with re-transmittal doesn't work.  here's what I did:
Add a new OS image with a path such as this:
\\SCCM\Share\Win7.wim
Add this file to a distribution point, wait for it to appear
Create a new OS image with the *exact* same path
Add it to the same DP.
Both the file transmits (even though it's already there) and the file is stored in SCCMContentLib *again*.
So, I'm really trying to prevent the WIM from transmitting over the WAN again, and I certainly don't want it stored twice.  Is DeDuplication not applicable to WIM files?  Just Applications/Packages/Drivers?  Does it de-dup after the fact?

From the blog post Torsten linked:
"For the scenario where the admin creates and distributes a new OS image package by updating some properties of an already existing OS image (WIM format), although only changed file blocks will be sent to the remote server when the “Enable Binary Delta Differential”BDR
option is enabled for the package, the entire changed file will be stored in the content library, even though the original and the revised WIM file differ only by a few blocks. When Data Deduplication is used in the same scenario, only a few
extra blocks will be used to store the new data instead of the entire file."
With that in mind, it seems that even though your two WIM files are from the exact same source path, what gets transmitted to the DP is unique enough that it must store two copies.

  • Use of Single Instance Store (SIS) in DPM 2012 R2

    Hi,
Please help me to understand use of installing Single Instance Store (SIS) feature while installation of DPM 2012 R2 or reason
    behind installing it.

DPM is using Single Instance Storage (SIS) for optimizing storage space.
Single-instance store, or SIS, is an architecture designed to maintain duplicate files with a minimum of disk, cache, and backup media overhead.
Single-instance store backup, or SIS backup, is  an API that  backup applications call to access the SIS architecture.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa362538(v=vs.85).aspx
Single Instance Store (SIS) service to reduce the storage overhead of storing duplicate files.
    Single Instance Store
Before you install DPM on your server, it is important to install a technology called Single Instance Store (SIS). SIS will ensure you get the maximum performance out of your disk space and reduce bandwidth needs on DPM.
SIS is a technology that keeps the overhead of handling duplicate files low. This is often referred to as
de-duplication. SIS is used to eliminate data duplication by storing only one copy of files on backup storage media. SIS is used in storage, mail, and backup solutions such as DPM. SIS helps to lower the costs of bandwidth when copying data
across a network as well as needed storage space.
Microsoft has used a single installation store in Exchange since version 4.0. SIS searches a hard disk and identifies duplicate files. SIS then saves only one copy of the files to a central location such as a DPM storage pool. SIS will then replace other
copies of the files with pointers that direct you to the copy of the files the SIS repository already has stored.

  • 2012 R2: Use of Single Instance Store (SCCMContentLib) only

    Hi all,
We have a System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager already running with almost every role (standalone, besides from wsus on another server as Software Update Point).
The SC2012R2 server has several HDDs C:,D:,E:,S: with SCCMContentLib
directories on C: & D: and a Sources shared resource in drive S: which is accessed through UNC
    \\SC2012R2\Sources\
The fact is that we think that this configuration is wasting space since it seems that both
SCCMContentLib and the Sources shared directory serve the same contents but in diferent ways, thus doubling our disk usage.
    As per
Howard Hoy post: By default, the content is single storage and browsing to a DP does not store all the files in a package id folder where you could find an install and execute it. You can enable the older method which will create a separate folder share.
This will require double the disk space!
So here is our question: Is there any way to get rid of the Sources
shared directory and serve contents to clients using SCCMContentLib only? In other words, besides of the Content Library at the Central Administration Site, are we forced to use the Sources in S: to deliver content or can we get rid of
    it somehow?
It seems that Automatic Deployment Rules, at the end of the wizard force you to select a UNC to store the Deployment Package. Is this the correct set up and we simply have to deal with it and keep adding more storage to the server?
As per Microsoft documentation about the
Content Library: "The content library is located on each site server and on each distribution point and provides a single instance store for content files"
However, if we are forced to add extra hdd space for the Sources directory to be accessed via UNC, it seems a waste of space.
Thanks in advance for any clarification on this subject.
    Regards.

"So here is our question: Is there any way to get rid of the Sources
shared directory and serve contents to clients using SCCMContentLib only?"
No. There is no way to do this. ConfigMgr is an enterprise content deployment system and this design is a result of efficiently supporting larger enterprises. It also doesn't make sense to directly use the source files that it does not directly control.
Yes, this does create some additional disk space overhead; however, disk space is cheap. You should be storing your source files on cheap disk and also note that there is no reason this has to be directly attached to your ConfigMgr site server. All source
content can be accessed using a UNC so putting the source files on a file server or alternate system that has cheap storage available to it is an easy "solution".
"It seems that Automatic Deployment Rules, at the end of the wizard force you to select a UNC to store the Deployment Package. Is this the correct set up and we simply have to deal with it and keep adding more storage to the server?"
Yes, all applications, drivers, OS image packages, OS install packages, and software update packages must have their content accessed using a UNC. Good practice also dictates that even your package files use a UNC for their source files. That doesn't mean
the UNC can't be local to the site server although see my comment above about using cheap disk for this. Here's a related blog post that you may want to review:
    http://blog.configmgrftw.com/configmgr-folder-structure/
"it seems a waste of space."
Ultimately, yes, you end up with duplicate copies of all of your source files. But, to be blunt, use cheap disk for this and move on as you can't change this.

  • Creating a new single instance on a RAC structure

I have a RAC with 2 nodes using ASM, it's perfect running.I don't have any problems with that.
Now I need to create a new instance in one of the RAC the nodes.
So my question is, I need to create a new ASM instance for this new single instance that I will create?
What will be the best practice in this case?

But i will have to create a new ASM instance to control the storage of this new instance?
I have the ASM1(node 1) and ASM2(node 2) I will have to create de +ASM3 on  the node 1 to control this new instance?

  • Rconfig: converting a single instance to RAC instance

    Hi,
I am trying to use the "rconfig" utility to convert a single instance to a RAC instance in an existing RAC cluster.
I have modified the .xml file, and am trying to run the conversion from the 1st node in the 2 node cluster (where the single instance resides).
The only error message i seem to be getting is below:
    <Response>
    <Result code="1" >
    Operation Failed
    </Result>
    <ErrorDetails>
ORCL_DATA_ORCLCLN The specified diskgroup is not mounted.
    </ErrorDetails>
    </Response>
    </Convert>
    </ConvertToRAC></RConfig>
Now I dont really understand why I would be getting that message as the instance is up and running and ASM disk group is mounted on node1 at the time i run the rconfig command, though its not clear to me if I also need to somehow mount the ASM disk group on the second node prior to running the rconfig command??

    Ok,
So I managed to get the disk group mounted on the second node, and re-ran the rconfig process.

  • Query performance on RAC is a lot slower than single instance

I simply followed the steps provided by oracle to install a rac db of 2 nodes.
The performce on Insertion (java, thin ojdbc) is pretty much the same compared to a single instance on NFS
However the performance on the select query is very slow compared to single instance.
I have tried using different methods for the storage configuration (asm with raw, ocfs2) but the performance is still slow.
When I shut down one instance, leaving only one instance up, the query performance is very fast (as fast as one single instance)
I am using rhel5 64 bit (16G of physical memory) and oracle 11.1.0.6 with patchset 11.1.0.7
Could someone help me how to debug this problem?
    Thanks,

You should check your sql statement from report and tuning them.
    - Check from Execute Plan.
    - If not index, determine to use index.
    SQL> set autot trace explain

cursor: pin S wait on X.
A session waits on this event when requesting a mutex for sharable operationsrelated to pins (such as executing a cursor), but the mutex cannot be granted becauseit is being held exclusively by another session (which is most likely parsing the cursor).
use variable SQL , avoid dynamic sql

check about memory MEMORY_TARGET initialization parameter.
By the way you have high "DB CPU"(47.5%), you should tune about your sql statement (check sql in report and tune)
    Good Luck

  • Migrating single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 database to Oracle RAC

We have a single instance SAP Netweaver environment on Oracle 11.2.0.1 database and want to migrate to Oracle 11.2.0.1 RAC and ASM. The documents are for 11.2.0.2 and later but we want a way to:
    1. Migrate single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to ASM
    2. Configure the environment as four node Oracle 11.2.0.1 cluster
    Thus far, I have:
    1. Installed clusterware 11.2.0.1
    2. Installed four ASM instances
    My questions:
    1. We want to migrate the single instance database to same server and extend to four node cluster and ASM
However, current SID for SAP and Oracle must remain the same. The problem I have is that the target database name needs to be same as source on same physical host.
    2. How would I use RMAN to migrate the single instance database to ASM for 11.2.0.1?
    3. How would I use rconfig after this step?

When we try to run the following RMAN command to migrate the single instance Oracle 11.2.0.1 datafiles it fails:The failure says: "+RMAN-10038: database session for channel ORA_DISK_1 terminated unexpectedly+". And this in itself does not tell you what the actual problem encountered is.
4- How to register the single instance with all four ASM instances and network services to resolve the above issue?Register what instance? ASM does not need databases or instances to be registered. It is a storage management layer. The cluster (grid infrastructure) layer is the one that deals with the registration (and management) of the various services and resources on that grid (e.g. ASM instances, database instances, SCAN and VIP, Listener services, etc).
5- Do we need to first run rconfig utility against single Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to register with clusterware services BEFORE using RMAN to perform the datafile migration to ASM?Never used rconfig. See Support Note +RCONFIG : Frequently Asked Questions [ID 387046.1]+ for details.

  • Converting Single Instance database into Oracle Fail-Safe on Linux

    Hi All,
We have single instance Oracle10g database running on Linux RHEL4. We are looking to convert this database into Oracle Fail-Safe (Active-Passive). Does any one have document for Oracle fail-safe setup?
    Regards,
    Tushar

    Tushar,
you can't use software for windows on Linux.
However, there's number of ways to implement high-availability solution on Linux Oracle.
You can go with Active-Active (RAC) - which means that you'll have two servers attached to the same database at the same time. You can use either, and if one goes down(due to power failure for instance), the second will still be available.
You can go with Active-Passive (Data Guard) - which means that you'll have one of the nodes being active and the second passive, but synchronized with the first one, so in case of failure of the first node you can activate the second one.
You can also go with linux clustering - which is most similar to MCS + fail-safe - you'll have two nodes clustered with linux clustering software (RH cluseter suite for instance) and connected to shared storage. One node is active, and in case of crash database instance will be automatically started on the second node. This is beneficial because you can use your resources more efficiently. In case if you have two databases you can run each of them on dedicated server and then, in case of node failure move to another one. However, the setup of such configuration is quite cumbersome.

  • Convert single instance to rac on 11gr2

    Hi,
I have 11gr2 database single instance running with ASM storage attached. i want to convert it into RAC on same server.
Can I take RMAN backup and restore in RAC ORACLE_HOME ? or do I need to go with rconfig or other steps?
Please let me know if have any good doc.
    thanks

    here is detail:
    DB server =db1
installed oracle binary for non-RAC-oracle 11gr2.
installed oracle binary for rac-oracle and grid V 11gr2
dATABASE is running in non-rac oracle with ASM. I want to convert from Oracle single instance to RAC instance on same server on Linux RHEL5.4 platform.
    Thanks

  • Restore single instance rman backup to rac database

Hello all. I have a 10gR2 single instance database that I have been taking backups using the oracle's suggested backup strategy, that is, once full database backup and incremental backups here and there. That's is all fine as I have (many times) being requested to rollback the database resulting in all operations being sucessfull.
However, since this is somehow a pre-certification database, I am now being tasked to restore this database to what is going to be our production database, which is a 10gR2 rac database. I have already set up the RAC database sucessfull.
Now, my question is: How can I take one of the backups that I have on the single-instance database and restore onto my RAC database ?
    Some information about the infraestructure:
Both operating systems are HP-UX. Single instance is 11.23, RAC database is 11.31.
Both database are using ASM as datafiles storage and flash recovery area storage.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Thanks!

In general terms, there are several ways you can convert a single instance into a rac intance, and it involves much more activities than just adding redo threads.
    Use of DBCA
    Enterprise Manager Grid Control
    rconfig utility
Considering your case, if you don't currently have Grid Control, the first option is rconfig.
    1. Migrate your database from the current environment to the target environment by a regular cloning procedure, this will create a single instance into your rac environment. Your regular rdbms rac installation allows you to manage both, single instance and rac instances. Use this procedure to clone your database to the target RAC environment using recovery manager --> http://madrid9999.googlepages.com/rmancloneadatabase
    2. Once you have started your database in the RAC environment proceed with the rconfig tool, this requires some files to perform the conversion, the ConvertToRAC.xml file which is located at $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/rconfig/sampleXMLs
    3. Once you copied/edited the ConvertToRAC.xml file, you have to run the rconfig. Save the ConvertToRAC.xml under a different file name.
    rconfig editedConvertToRAC.xml

  • Cluster with one 2 Node RAC and a Single Instance using ASM

    Hi there,
i am not sure with one planned installation and want to ask, weather i am on the right track.
    Some Facts:
    Clusterware 11g
    ASM 11g
    Database 10gR2
    AIX 5.3
    3 Machines
    2 Storages DS4700
    My Plan
On Node 1 and Node 2 we install a RAC Database for an ERP Software
On Node 3 we install a single Instance Database for a Logistic Software
So i will install on all three Nodes Clusterware and an 3 Instances ASM - Cluster
I create 2 Diskgroups, one for the FRA and one for the Data, both on Luns on the DS4700
The RAC-Database and the Logistic-Database are using the same Diskgroups.
Is this the way to go for this circumstances?
The alternative is, as far as i see
    Clusterware on an 3 Servers
One 2 Node ASM for the ERP Software
one Single Node ASM for the Logistcs
4 Diskgroups, because of the 2 ASM-Database 2 for the RAC and 2 for the Single Instance.
Please give me some hints, which way i should prefer.
My tendence is going to the first alternative. I like the idea to share the Diskgroups over more than on Database because of easy administration.
The load of the 2 Databases are completly different, the logistc software will nearly do nothing compared to the ERP Software, so this should'nt be a problem.
But maybe i oversee something, so please do not hesitate to tell me, i am completly wrong ;)
    Thanks a lot
    Jörg

why clusterware on 3rd machine ?
I'd have separate DGs but that's just me.If you wish to install ASM you need OCS installed on the machine, even if it is just one node at all.
It is a kind of a dependency, no OCS, no ASM

  • SharePoint Designer workflow executing same lines\steps multiple time in single instance

I am working SharePoint 2010 workflow. I am facing an issue.
    Problem:
    1) I have few workflows running on different situation
    2) Out of all workflows one is set to execute on "Item Created"
    3) This workflow having some lines to execute and then create an item and then wait for a change in field value.
    4) Expectation: This should create one instance and execute the lines\steps only once and wait for field change.
    5) Actual Out-Come: The workflow is executing the lines\steps three times in a single instance.
    6) The workflow history is showing the three time execution of all lines\steps using log to history.
    7) It is a SPD workflow so there is no while loop. but it behaving like while loop.
    8) On create Item, we are creating task, so it is creating three tasks. It is sending three emails and also we are appending text in title so text is appended three times.
I did a lot of research but not able to find the solution.
    Please help.
    - Khan Abubakar Disclaimer: The opinions expressed herein are my own personal opinions and do not represent any others view in anyway.

    Hi Khan,
According to your description, my understanding is that your workflow executed some actions three times.
What actions did you for the problematic actions?
If they are "Start Approval Process" action, please check whether there are multiple approvers for tasks. If yes, the action will create one task for each approver.
Please create a new list and a new workflow based on the problematic workflow, test again, compare the result.
For reproducing your issue, I suggest you provide more information about your list and workflow (detailed actions or some screenshots). It will make others in the forum easy to find a solution for you.

  • Need help to create a login for maintenance of a single database in a multiple databases, single instance environment

    Hi,
We are in the process of consolidating several databases on a single instance of SQL Server 2012.
Databases are developed by outside vendors; they have to be able to install and support their databases but they shouldn't be able to do any thing with the other databases.
When I tried to migrate the first database, the vendor told me that on the former server he used the sa account in some batch.
    On a previous thread
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/dc1f802f-d8de-4e2b-87e5-ccb289593fb7/security-for-multiple-applications-on-a-single-sql-server-2012-instance?forum=sqlsecurity
it was suggested to me that I create a login for each vendor and that this login should map a user in their respective databases.
To test, I simulated the process in a test database:
1 - I create the login and I scripted the command:
    USE [master]
    GO
/* For security reasons the login is created disabled and with a random password. */
    /****** Object:  Login [M02_Test]    Script Date: 2014-12-02 16:23:58 ******/
    CREATE LOGIN [M02_Test] WITH PASSWORD=N'ÈS^y¡¶=Å€"+y¤j|úªhÖféÎЕœEu
    c', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[M02], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF
    GO
    ALTER LOGIN [M02_Test] DISABLE
    GO
2 - I create the user and scripted it
    USE [M02]
    GO
    /****** Object:  User [M02_Test]    Script Date: 2014-12-02 16:29:41 ******/
CREATE USER [M02_Test] FOR LOGIN [M02_Test] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo]
    GO
    Questions:
What should we do with te scrambled password: is it saved as it was entered and should it be kept somewhere in a safe place?
Would that do the job for the vendor who used sa before?
    Thanks for your advice

I'm not sure why you would save the script. Why not create the login, in one way or another give the vendor the password. Keep the login disabled until needed.
I don't recall exactly what we said last time, but it occurs to me that the application setup things on server level. Jobs is the prime thing that comes to mind, but there could be other things.
Now, here is an important observation. As long as the vendor's application was alone on the server, that was OK, and it was OK to give the vendor sysadmin rights. In this situation this is less OK, and as we said, you should only give the vendor db_owner
    in the database.
But the vendor will need to tell you what they do on server-level. They should know this - unless they sell their app as a "alone-on-a-server application". (And there are indeed such applications out there, even from Microsoft.) But there is a
risk that they will bill you extra if you make their installation more difficult.
Maybe you will have to give some vendors sysadmin for the installation, but in such case, you should ask them why they need it. If they don't, give them db_owner, and they will have to find out their hard way. (And you don't pay them for learning
    their own application.)

  • [SOLVED] Multiple Instances of Word 2010; Possible to Force Single Instance?

    Is it possible to either:
Control Word instancing so that its a single instace application; OR
Adjust the behavior so that if there's already an Word of word, new documents (no matter how they're launched) will open in the existing instance and NOT a new one?
I have a user who tends to open documents en masse/in bulk, highlighting 2-8 at a time and opening them (alternate-click > open OR once selected hitting [Enter]).
When they do this, multiple instances of Word are launched.
Very rarely is there an instance for each document, but its usually close.  For example, if they opened 8 documents there might be 5-7 instances, with several instances showing 2 or more documents in View > Switch Windows.
Multiple instances of Word are a problem for this user because they because a heavy user of Ctrl+F6 / Ctrl+Shift+F6.
And when documents are spread out across multiple instances, this does not work: It does not allow them to cycle through all opened documents; It will only cycle through those that are within that particular instance of Word.
    Is this by design?
Is this a change in the way earlier versions of Word behaved?
Is this an 'undocumented feature' [or worse]?
    Can this behavior be controlled?

No idea; I'd call it a bug.
This behavior started with Word 2007 or 2010, earlier versions opened all documents within a single instance.
    See 1.
    No, unfortunately not.
