Single USB HDD shows up twice?
I've got an external USB hard drive, but for some reason, it shows up twice on the desktop and places, which does not look pleasant, as they point to the same place. I'm using Gnome. Also, on a side note, I noticed that my iPod will show up under Places if I open nautilus, but it doesn't automount anymore. HAL is running, but I don't know why it's doing this...
Here's my /etc/fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 vfat user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda4 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/disk/by-uuid/f5a72fe9-54e0-402c-a3af-efa1486dfbf3 /private ext3 noauto,user,rw,suid,dev,exec,async 1 0
The reason I'm mounting by UUID is because if I have my iPod still plugged in while rebooting, it'll mess up the order and the hard drive will be hdc1 as opposed to hdb1.
Thanks in advance
1.) Check your kernel messages ( dmesg ). Is it being identified as two devices? (I doubt it; so I'll move on ...)
2.) "mount" shouldn't allow you to have a single filesystem accessible at two different mountpoints. However, I'd check /proc/mounts and /etc/mtab anyway.
3.) This sounds the most relevant to your case: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/5519?pagenum=2 . Seems like a udev malfunction (or, possibly, the way Gnome reads information about the devices through HAL). There are several workarounds listed there, but the solution by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) is to write some udev rules. He posted several, the first of which was broken.

USB thumb drive shows up twice
Dear all,
I have a 1GB USB thumb drive which always mounts in the finder twice:
i.e.
I am talking about the finder window and the desktop: once I have plugged in the usb stick it then shows two connections to the stick:
one is called:
USBDISKPRO
the other is called:
NO NAME
I just got my G5 and I have partitioned my disk, though I dont think this has any influence on my problem...
the problem is exactly the same as the one mentioned last october (please see here below) in this forum but has not been aswered.
I hope I have more luck.
thank you!

USB Thumb Drive shows up twice
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 10:07 AM
I have a 64MB USB thumb drive (the only name on it I can see is VeriTest, which might be the name of some company that was giving them away) which always mounts on the desktop twice. I have used drive utility to re-format it (but even in drive utility it shows up twice).
On a 10.3 machine yesterday I reformatted it while zeroing out all the data and it only showed up once. But today when plugged back into my 10.4 machine, it shows up twice again.
It also gets weirder... I can look at either "drive" and delete the file that is on there, but it does not get deleted on the second drive - so the two of them seem to get out of sync. I cannot, however, empty the trash because it says the item in the trash is in use.
I know it's just a 64MB little thingy, but I find it quite useful (but this is annoying when I have to reformat to erase a file)... Any ideas?
Ben
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)My guess is that the PC isn't showing you the second partition at all. If a drive is partitioned, the correct behavior is to show it as two separate volumes. If your PC is not showing the second volume, so showing them both as one volume, either way your PC is behaving incorrectly.
Did you install some software on your PC to use your thumb drive? When mine is inserted into a PC, it automatically installs software to manage the secure partition. Maybe yours has some kind of similar software that makes it appear as a single volume. -
Copied files to USB HDD - now can't find them!
I had to reinstall my wife's macbook so I backed up all her files to a USB HDD formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) [according to disk utility]
I then reinstalled and tried to find the files which do not show up on the USB HDD (shoulda checked!)
I've seen posts alluding to having the drive formatted Journalised but they all refer to having done that FIRST.
Are my files history? Is there any way to get them back? Help! Thanks so much for helping me with this.
I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem. Now that I look at the
import settings that were used:
1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
also renamed.
2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
changed LR4 names.
1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
imported yesterday and are renamed.
Thanks again,
Matthew Kraus

Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD
Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

[solved] unable to boot to the root partition on my new (usb) HDD
hello,
i got a "unable to determine major/minor number of root device" error message when the system try to find the root partition (after it succefully boot on the boot partition).
Shuttle XPC SB65G2 (Mainboard FB65), usb HDD: Intenso INIC-1608L, Linux ctkarch 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT, grub legacy.
sdb1: /boot (ext2), sdb2: swap, sdb3: / (ext4), sdb4: /home (ext4)
of course i have a kernel compiled with usb in HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf.
i tried to install with sdb1: / (ext4), sdb2: swap, sdb3: /home (ext4)
but i got another error: it can't find the file /dev/blabla (root partition) (after it succefully boot on the partition!).
at last i found the solution: i have to comment "root (hdx,x)" in menu.lst for grub legacy!:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
# root (hd1,0)
kernel ... by-uuid...
you don't need this line when you define by uuid, by label, or so...
it seems this line perturbs the behavior of the system.
if this can help...You do not need the "raw". If you do:
ok devalias
it will show you how other aliases are formed
do ls -l /dev/dsk/c0t2d0s0 and you'll see the "non-raw" device path
ok reset
will "lock" your alias in NVRAM but it will attempt to boot from boot-device (normally disk) the next time unless auto-boot? is set to false
ok setenv auto-boot? false
My guess is that it could not understand "raw", reset, and booted from boot-device.
You can:
ok setenv auto-boot? false
ok nvunalias altboot
ok nvalias altboot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/dad@2,0
ok reset
ok boot altboot -

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!

Floppy drive install to portable USB HDD & Floppy to boot from
title pretty much says it all. I have a resonably old computer that cant boot off of usb. and i want to install it to a usb hdd. I dont have a cd drive so i will have to use the floppy network install (i did this before). This is the only distro that I know of that has a floppy install. i have searched but the wiki search brings up like 500 results that are irrelevant. so in short this is what i need:
a floppy to be able to boot from a usb hdd
a guide that can show me how to install from a network install floppy setup to a usb hdd
if i remember correctly, the floppy network install is much much different than the cd install.dont know if it will be able to install to usb but
image can be found here
ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux … ux/images/
floppy install
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … py_Install
may be you can install arch to usb via a different pc move usb to desired machine boot floppy.img chroot run grub/lilo onto another floppy disk
please update us on your progress
good luck -
I'm attempting to have iCloud keep my calendars in sync over my devices. But the events show us twice on each device. Why the duplicates?
Hey briannagrace96,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I'd check out the following article, it looks like it applies to your situation:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1363
You'll want to go through the following troubleshooting steps, and for more detail on each step follow the link to the article above:
Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant:
If you have not already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant (choose your iPod model from the list).
If the issue remains after following your iPod's troubleshooting assistant, follow the steps below to continue troubleshooting your issue.
Restart the iPod Service
Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
Empty your Temp directory and restart
Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
Change your iPod's drive letter
Remove and reinstall iTunes
Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items
Update, Reconfigure, Disable, or Remove Security Software
Deleting damaged or incorrect registry keys
Take care,
David -
Shared HP printer shows up twice - wierd
Not sure if this is a Leopard or a Tiger question but I have an HP CP1700 printer attached via USB to an Intel iMac/Os 10.5.1 and I have set it to share. When I open Print & Fax on my TiBook/Os 10.4.11 which s ethernet connected, via a router, to the iMac, the printer shows up twice in the menu with checkmarks beside each. The first one is in bold text but greyed out; wierdly, its location is listed as "Directly attached via USB" - although it has never been attached to this computer (nor has any other printer). The second one has its location as MyName's Computer - which I assume is the shared printer although both computers have the same name! Adding to my confusion, I have to confirm in a dropdown menu the selected printer in the Print dialog and both printers are listed in this menu without a clue as to which is which. To make matters worse, when I eventually try to print something, neither option gives me a full complement of print options - the critical Paper type/quality page is missing so I can't specify which pages to print or whether to print in colour or greyscale.
Anyone else seen this and cured it? TIA.
Simonyou dont mention the model because airprint is a feature a printer have to support before you can print to it from ios devices
if it don't support airprint you can download a hp printing app from app store -
Unable to empty trash due to external USB HDD's locked files and no permission?
Hello.
I was doing a major cleanup with an external Seagate USB HDD due to low free disk spaces. It has two partitions/drives: FAT32 (using it for on other non-Apple machines like Windows 2000 SP4) and HFS [Time Machine only]). I threw about 30,000 items (copied from an old Windows 2000 SP4 machine's HDD with NTFS back a few years ago) from FAT32 partition/drive into the trash can. However, I am having problems emptying it. Most of them were emptied, but some were left behind.
This four years old MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.8's Trash dialog boxes said "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." and "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "<filename>" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Options key while selecting Empty Trash". http://i.imgur.com/XFBfF.gif for the screen shots/captures of the error messages.
I tried holding Option key and emptying trash, but that didn't help/work. I used Finder to look at the files, and they had locked status. So I unlocked them which worked, but I can't delete the empty folders/directories, and these don't have locked.
What's going on and how do I empty the trash? Thank you in advance.BDAqua wrote:

Not that I saw through Terminal's ls -all and Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine. Someone told me to try secured empty trash and it did more, but not fully.
I used the administrator (sudo) account in Mac OS X 10.5.8's Terminal to delete the trash, but it still failed:

I tried deleting this on an old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine and it had no problems! Weird. I wonder why Mac OS X 10.5.8 failed to delete it through its Finder and Terminal (sudo rm -rf command). -
Satellite U400-15E - Can't boot from new USB HDD
Hello.
Recently a bought an external WD My Book with 3TeraByte to use with my Satellite U400-15E. I can use it inside Windows 7 Ultimate with no problem. But if I try to boot from it (by pressing F12 key), the BIOS doesn't even see the drive.
Is this because Toshiba doesn't use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)? UEFI BIOS can overcome the 2.19TB limitation in todays computers easily, like the following Western Digital document explains:
This would allow me to use my new external drive to store a Ghost image of my Toshiba's internal HDD for instance. I mean 3TB and even greater capacities are a reality today. When will Toshiba update their BIOSes to support UEFI?
Equipment used:
Toshiba Satellite U400-15E (BIOS v5.00 26-10-2010)
Western Digital My Book Essential 3TeraByte - Firmware v1.014 (USB 3.0 interface)
MS Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit version
Thank youHello
Well... with this same computer, I already tried booting (successfully) from the following pendrive capacities:
8GB
16GB
32GB
All without problem.
And besides, before having the 3TeraByte WD, I had a 1TeraByte Iomega USB HDD from which I could store Ghost images, because the BIOS would show the 1TB Iomega drive after pressing F12 and Symantec Ghost could also detect the drive without problems.
But with this new 3TeraByte WD... the BIOS doesn't even show the drive after pressing F12.
So when you say +{color:#0000ff}So USB HDDs are not supported{color}+ are you refering booting from USB HDD?
Hum... I'm not sure about that.
I never tried booting an OS from the Iomega.
But that was never my purpose either.
My purpose is for the BIOS (and hopefully Symantec Ghost) to detect the WD USB drive, like it happened before with the 1TeraByte Iomega.
I was using a 1TeraByte Iomega "Select Series" drive.
With the Iomega I could create Ghost images of my Toshiba without a problem.
+{color:#0000ff}But you’re absolutely right: 3TB and greater capacities are reality today but Satellite U400 is older notebook model and not newest one.{color}+
A Laptop computer that has Two 64bit CPU cores and 8GB RAM capacity is not that old!
I think it could be a BIOS limitation, since it's not using UEFI.
Any more ideas?
Thank you.

Optimal USB HDD Format for MAC + PC Network
Hello, longtime PC user finally converted to Mac.
I have a new 13" MB and the new Airport Extreme. I have a Western Digital USB HDD that I would like to set up over the Airport Network so that it is accessible by the primary computer (Mac) as well as the PC (XP).
The question is, what is the most usefull way to format the WD drive, so that the Mac can read write, and the PC can at least read, hopefully write? HFS+? FAT? A combination with partitions?
And, I plan on using Bootcamp for several existing applications, storing the files etc. on the WD drive (as opposed to the Mac internal drive). So the second question is how to best incorporate Bootcamp functionality.
Thanks in advance, I have scoured the forums and no concise answer for how to optimize this type of network (Mac primary, best functionality of PCs secondary) could be found.

I believe that if you are going to have this HDD plugged into the USB port of the Airport Extreme, then you must format it HFS+. The Windows machine can still read and write to it because the Airport Extreme makes the drive appear to Windows as a friendly format.
Wouldn't it just treat it as a network drive that's essentially format "agnostic" (i.e. it doesn't really care)? That's what you've got with internet servers that could have storage in any drive format that's compatible with the server, but the data is transmitted as TCP/IP.
Just as an aside, FAT32 has the limitations of a 4 GB single file size limit. This can easily be reached with things such as DVD images or large archive files. -
Hi
I have a Macbook Air 128GB but our family PC is a Windows 7 PC. I have decided to move my iTunes library and Picassa photos on my PC to iTunes and iPhoto on the MBA. I have a USB HDD that has been formatted to HFS+ and I am going to put my iTunes and iPhoto librarys on this. Is anybody aware of anyway I can backup this HDD periodically to my Windows 7 PC?
Thanks
StephenHi both
Thanks for the replies. I had considered FAT32 as an option but was a little concerned about the iPhoto library. I don't know much about iPhoto so maybe my concern is unfounded but my thinking was, if iPhoto stores all photos (or even photo data) in a single library file is there a chance that this file could become larger than the 4GB FAT32 limit. I dont know if either of you know the answer to that.
One other I have started looking at today is crashplan. It is a backup software that allows you to backup to multiple destiations including other computers. By installing this on my MBA and Windows 7 PC, I was able to back up my user folder, iTunes library and iPhoto library to the PC over my LAN. It then just takes bit level differentials so subsequent backups have been really quick. I am going to test a few restores over the next few days but for free it looks like a great piece of software.
Thanks again

USB Hdd on Home Hub 4 was working fine but has sto...
Hi
I have been using an external USB Hdd plugged into my hub for around a year without any issues (for backing up and serving music to SONOS), but recently it stopped being visible to all devices. My assumption was that it had gone pop but took it out and plugged it into my laptop and all is functioning perfectly.
Looking onto the HH4 with my browser it's showing
M3 Portable (Rev: 3) (File type not supported)
I've read some of the other threads here (most relate to HH3 and Fat formating) but they don't sem to be the same issue as this HDD was working fine and is not faulty in any way.
Has there been a HH4 update that has stopped this working but has a solution?
thanksThanks for that tip but unfortunately no progress.
The USB hdd received power and started spinning on the home hub being reset ok - but not visible on the laptop still.
One thing - if you go to the HH manager screen on the browser and ask it to safely disconnect the USB device it states it can't as it's running even though nothing is trying to access the drive at that time.....may not be relevant -
Airport Express and an External USB HDD
Hello All,
If you can help that would be brilliant. I have just been given an Airport Express as a present. Not sure why. I am wondering if there is a way to allow the software / hardware to pick up a USB HDD instead of a USB Printer. I noticed that the Airport software does show you a disk option in settings but it greyed out so you can not select it. I have got the Airtunes working and that is brilliant!!! I just dont want to have to return it if I can get the USB HDD to work with it.
I hope you can help.
TerryAre there any other pieces of hardware from Apple that do Airtunes and USB HDD that are available?
No. The only device compatible with Airtunes is the AX.
