Size of control file

Hi,
How can I define the size of control files ?
I will create my DB with a script and before in init.ora file I will define location and name of control files but how about the size , I want them 50Mb only for each.
Many thanks.

Hi,
The size is controled by the following parameters.
control_file_record_keep_time
maxlogfiles
maxlogmembers
maxloghistory
maxinstances
look at this link for more info.

Thanks

  • What is Control file ?

    Hi Gurus,
    Please explain me that what is Control file and what was the purpose of it in SAP Oracle DataBase.
    Thanks.

    Hi Kalyan
    <b>What Is a Control File?</b>
    Every Oracle Database has a control file, which is a small binary file that records the physical structure of the database. The control file includes:
    The database name
    Names and locations of associated datafiles and redo log files
    The timestamp of the database creation
    The current log sequence number
    Checkpoint information
    The control file must be available for writing by the Oracle Database server whenever the database is open. Without the control file, the database cannot be mounted and recovery is difficult.
    The control file of an Oracle Database is created at the same time as the database. By default, at least one copy of the control file is created during database creation. On some operating systems the default is to create multiple copies. You should create two or more copies of the control file during database creation. You can also create control files later, if you lose control files or want to change particular settings in the control files.
    <b>Guidelines for Control Files</b>
    This describes guidelines you can use to manage the control files for a database, and contains the following topics:
    Provide Filenames for the Control Files
    Multiplex Control Files on Different Disks
    Back Up Control Files
    Manage the Size of Control Files
    Role of Control File will remain the same even when you use Oracle with SAP. Just there will be some more entries in the file.
    Refer the link below as well:
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/control.htm#i1006143
    Hope this should clear you doubt.

  • The file size of selected file in input file control is shown as 0 for multiple file selection in Safari 5.1

    The file size of selected file in input file control is shown as 0 for multiple file selection in Safari 5.1. If you select single file, then it is able to return file size correctly. However, if you select multiple files, then the file size of each of the selected file is always returned as 0 from javascript. This works correctly in Safari 4.0 but it does not work in Safari 5.1.
    How do I get the correct file size in Safari 5.1 ?

    If you want to post (or send me) a link to the lrcat file, I'd take a look at it for you, and give you a break-down what's consuming all the bytes. But it might be fun to learn how to do that yourself (e.g. using SQL). I use SQLiteSpy, but other people have their favorites.. (or you can use a command-line client if you prefer..). One way: just run "drop table "{table-name}" on each table then look at filesize (do this to a copy, not the real thing).
    Anyway, it's hard to imagine keywords and captions etc. taking much of the space, since even if you had 1000 10-character words of text metadata per photo average that still only adds up to 117MB, which isn't a substantial portion of that 8G you're seeing occupied.
    Anyway, if you've painted the heck out of most of them and not cleared dev history, that'll do it - that's where I'd put my money too...
    One thing to consider to keep file-size down:
    ===================================
    * After reaching a milestone in your editing, take a snapshot then clear edit history, or the top part of it anyway (e.g. leave the import step), using a preset like:
    Clear Edit History.lrtemplate
    s = {
        id = "E36E8CB3-B52B-41AC-8FA9-1989FAFD5223",
        internalName = "No Edit",
        title = "Clear Edit History",
        type = "Develop",
        value = {
            settings = {
                NoEdit = true,
            uuid = "34402820-B470-4D5B-9369-0502F2176B7F",
        version = 0,
    (that's my most frequently used preset, by far ;-})
    PS - I've written a plugin called DevHistoryEditor, which can auto-consolidate steps and reduce catalog size - it's a bit cumbersome to use a.t.m. but in case you're interested...

  • Measuring thr control file size

    Dear Friends ,
    I know that , RMAN records are kept on the control file when I dont use recovery Catalog .
    Barring this , RMAN also keep database related informations . In this case my question is ,
    Is the control file size ups and down ? How can I measure or manage the size of the control file .
    I m using Oracle 10g , here in OEM I cannot find anything to see or manage the control file size .
    Plz help me ... ..

    Hi,
    Change Maxdatafiles, Maxlogfiles after Creating Database:
    1. Dump a trace of the controlfile.
    Use SQL*Plus (or Server Manager) and enter:
    SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace ;
    2. Modify the created trace file (located in the user_dump_dest directory):
    a) remove from the first line to the line before "STARTUP NOMOUNT"
    b) remove line "ALTER DATABASE OPEN" to the end of the file
    c) change value of maxdatafiles, maxlogfiles and other parameters as desired
    d) rename the file to something .sql (such as cntl.sql)
    3. Shutdown the database.
    4. Backup the database.
    5. Run SQL*Plus (or Server Manager) and do the following:
    SQL> connect / as sysdba
    SQL> @cntl.sql (The SQL script that you created in step 2)
    SQL> alter database open noresetlogs ;
    Note:
    Beginning in Oracle8, when you issue CREATE DATABASE or CREATE CONTROLFILE
    statements, the MAXDATAFILES parameter specifies an initial size of the datafile
    portion of the control file. Later, if you add a file whose number exceeds
    MAXDATAFILES but is less than or equal to the value specified by the DB_FILES
    initialization parameter, the control file automatically expands to allow the
    datafile portion to accommodate more files. You will not need to recreate the
    controlfile in this case.

    Now, if it not possible to get above backup piece back, then how to proceed with restore with backup piece DF_L0_HFM11PRD_10112012_l8npv5b6_13992_1 as it also has control file backup and available on disk, not obsolete. I can understand the reason for marking CF* file as obsolete because of redundency 1. But how to proceed with restore with available backup ?

    Hello;
    I would change my configure for one :
    RMAN>CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;Would use this to check :
    list backup of controlfile completed before <date>And would catalog everything again just to be sure before starting the restore.
    You may have to catalog use the control file piece to avoid the error.
    RMAN> catalog backuppiece ...Another idea is to test the restore using something like this :
    RMAN> run {
            set until time "to_date('2012 NOV 17 07:00','YYYY MON DD HH24:MI')";
            restore controlfile preview;

    Hi,
    Sorry, my mistake, I did not pay attention to the cloning part.
    For this error, looks like the database was not cleanly shutdown before copying the files or that preclone was not run successfully. You will have to run preclone again, and shutdown the database normally, then copy the file again.
    Regards,
    Hussein
