Size of Mini DV to imovie - then to idvd

I have 4 (1 hour each) mini dv to input to imovie which I want to eventually burn to idvd.
1 - How much space does each 1 hour mini dv take in imovie?
2 - When transferring to Idvd - how much can I transfer into idvd for burning?
3 - Can I import 2 mini dv tapes into 1 file in imovie and then import to idvd? Or will it be too large???
I am working with imovie 4 & idvd4
thanks

1: 13GB
2: 120 minutes minus time for animated themes.
3: Yes, you can. For best quality (and for not boring your audience) stay under about 70 minutes per DVD.

  • Display size query, + quality loss from iMovie originals

Learning to work the iDVD process, but what is the word on a foolproof sizing method, such that the thing will display OK on any TV? I don't see any way to restrict display size in iMovie, and what good is the TV Safe check, if you can't control the display size?? Also is quality loss inevitable? I'm compiling the DVD from separate files, less than 1 gb ea. I used "full quality" Quicktime compressed versions from the original iMovie file (which look fine in QT); then pulled those back in to iMovie, then shared to iDVD. One of the files looks fine encoded, but the other has weird sizzling-oil standing wave artifacts, even on still scenes from jpegs. Looking for help/comment/expressions of sympathy

    Hi v
Quality of the DVD-disc depends on several things.
    • Highes Quality isn't Top - better is Best Performances (up to 60 min movie)
confused naming - in iDVD'08 there is Pro Quality AND I like it.
    • Media brand - I use Verbatim
    • Type: DVD-R my choise no DVD+R or +/-RW
    • I save a Disc-Image and burn this at an as SLOW speed as possibly (eg x1) with Toast™
(Disc Util tool can also do this)
    • I DON'T USE the function Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie - IT IS DESTRUCTIVE !!
Just drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window - then iDVD do the
rendering and so much better. Especially if there is photos in the movie.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc - should be about 25Gb when all material is imported
and structured. This for iDVD to work with - iDVD can't use an extern hard disc as scratch.
(less than 5Gb - result is most probably of no use at all)
This is what come's first to my mind.

  • Mini DVD to iMovie

Bengt posted the following about one month ago in response to a question asking how to get material from a mini DVD to iMovie.
    "I do:
    • Connect my Camera to a Stand alone DVD-player via the analog cable supported with the Camera
plus a RCA-SCART converting plug. IT HAS TO HAVE an in / out switch.
    • Then record a new miniDV tape while DVD-player plays. I see it in my Camera LCD-sceen and
    control it by DVD-remote control
    • Use the tape into iMovie
∆ Alt if the Camera has video trough function You can record/import into iMovie direct via FW, Camera, analog cable and DVD-player. Not all have this facility."
Am I correct in understanding that I play the mini DVD in a DVD player that is connected to a mini DV camera that is in Record mode.
I don't know what an RCA-SCART converting plug is but I'll hunt around on Google. Further, "IT HAS TO HAVE an in / out switch". Set to in or out? I'm guessing 'out'.
    Thanking you in advance.

Bengt's advice says basicly: use a DVD standalone player (to avoid huzzle with non-standard-sized disks) and connect the out to the analogue-in of a camcorder..
scart plugs come as in- or out-connected.. some cables come with a switchable scart-plug.. yepp, out (=from the dvd).. and a connector which fits into the analogue-IN of a camcorder (=very few offer such a connection, read manual....)

  • I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. What can I do?

I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. Some clips are fine in the movie, but most are just black and when I hover over them, it says source clip missing. How to I fix this? Thank You

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos.  I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

Please check Help >> System Info to find your catalog's location. Close Organizer. Go to this location and within the catalog folder, rename the thumbs.5.cache file to say thumbs.5.cache.old.
Now relaunch Organizer and let the thumbnailing complete. You should get your thumbnails back in no time.

  • Solsitce volume size showned lesser by metastat cmd then the actul size

    Hi,
I formatted disk and labeled as EFI disk. The partition table looks as below after formatting
Part Tag Flag First Sector Size Last Sector
    0 usr wm 8242 1011.96MB 2080733
    1 unassigned wm 0 0 0
    2 unassigned wm 0 0 0
    3 unassigned wm 0 0 0
    4 unassigned wm 0 0 0
    5 unassigned wm 0 0 0
    6 usr wu 34 4.01MB 8241
    8 reserved wm 2080734 8.00MB 2097117
And then I created the solsitce volume as below,
    metainit d95 1 1 c3t3d1s0
If we see the size slice "0" above, its 1011.96MB ~= 2 072 491 blocks.
When I ran the metastat on d95 volume i got following output,
    d95: Concat/Stripe
    Size: 2064384 blocks (1008 MB)
    Stripe 0:
    Device Start Block Dbase Reloc
    c3t3d1s0 0 No
Here, it shows size as 1008MB (2064384).
When I created the volume with one complete disk, y didnt whole disk used by the solstice volume?
If I format the disk with vtoc and create the volume then whole disk will be given to the volume and even sizes will be shown properly. Then why not with volume on EFI disk?
    Thanks,
    Praveen

    3) How to give different names in 'Tag'?
    4) How to know actually, How much size can be distributed among user defined partitions?
    5) On solaris, How do we actually verify IF mirroring is in place?1) You create a really big slice and use soft partitioning. Otherwise 7 hard partitions are all you can assign.
    2) That's an alternate system partition. You can't touch it and there's only 2 cylinders in it anyway.
    3) There are only certain values that are legal. You generally don't adjust them.
    4) Slice 2 is the entire usable space. That tells you how much you can distribute among the 7 (0,1,3,4,5,6,7) partitions/slices available to you. In your case; that's about 137 GB.
    5) It isn't by default. You have to take positive actions with either Logical Volume Manager (aka Solstice Disk Suite for us old school guys) or some other form of volume manager. LVM is free with the OS and does a great job of mirroring the OS. I personally wouldn't use it for managing a form of disks; but it's perfect for the OS mirroring.

  • My Ipod seems to be stuck in a manified or zoom mode.  If I turn it off it goes to normal print size for aout 2 seconds and then zooms in too large to use.  Help?

My ipod seems to be stuck in a magnified or zoom mode. If i turn it off, it goes back to normal size for about 3 seconds and then zooms in so large that it is unuseable.  Someone help!  Please.

Did you follow the instructions in the link I provided in my first reply?
Also try triple clicking the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn Zoom off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there.

  • A way to avoid a lenghty conversion in iMovie & then another in iDVD?

When creating a DVD from iMovie, it takes a long time (converting from DV to Apple Intermediate Codec ?); later, before burning, iDVD takes another long time to convert to MPEG2. Is there a way to perform just one lengthy conversion instead of 2? May be using a Reference Movie instead of a Self-contained one?

    Welcome to Apple discussions!
Is there a way to perform just one lengthy conversion instead of 2?
For DV I use iMovie 06 with iDVD 11. There is no conversion.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD already in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels, aspect ratio, and original quality.

  • 3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

  • Best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD

I am looking to find out what is the best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD. I have read the other postings that give the basic howto (export to Media Browser then select the video in iDVD). However, my question is a little more technical. I have 1080i HD projects. I am interested in burning them to DVD in the best possible quality. What setting should I be using when I publish to Media Browser?
I am wondering about quality loss due to more than one conversion/compression. I suspect that when I export to the Media Browser then this is occurring. If I am not mistaken iMovie is using something like H.264 for this. Then, when I run iDVD I suspect it will it do another conversion/compression, I think to get to MPEG2. Not only could this result in a loss of quality but also it will take extra time. I am interested to know what others think about this.
Finally, I am looking to create DVDs for a lot of video. I am wondering if there are any USB or firewire hardware devices out there that could speed up the compression. I use the Elgato Turbo.264 when I want to encode to H.264 but I wonder if there is something similar for DVD creation.
    Thanks in advance.

the standards for videoDVD are 720x480, and usually mpeg2 encoded..
so, your HiDef project HAS to be 'downsampled' somehow..
I would Export with Qucktime/apple intermediate => which is the 'format' your project is allready, and you avoid any useless 'inbetween encoding'..
iDVD will 'swallow' this huge export file - don't mind: iDVD cares for length, not size.
iDVD will then convert into DVD-standards..
you can 'raise' quality, by using projects <60min - this sets iDVD automatically to highest technical possible bitrate
hint: judge pic quality on a DVDplayer + TV.. not on your computer (DVDs are meant for TVdelivery)

  • Humongous iMovie file to iDVD

I have a 23.56 GB movie (onlt 24 minutes worth). I know iDVD just uses the iMovie file and adds the themes, etc.
What do I have to do to get the project down to a manageable size? What happens if I share the movie over to iDVD?
Am I going to have to record the movie onto the miniDV camcorder and then put it back in iMovie?
Any suggestions? I want to get this GB hog finished and burned to a DVD.

    Hi RiverLover!
    Panic not!
iDVD compresses the movie by about 4:1, and in any case does not care about project size, only length, which is maximum 2 hours including menues, themes etc.
You are well within that limit, so just go for it!
But instead of 'share' I recommend doing the following: Save your iMovie project and close iMovie. Open iDVD, name your new project, and from the File menu scroll down to Import. In the sidemenu select Video. That opens your Movie Folder, where you can select the iMovie project in question, which then zips straight into iDVD.

  • How do I get a movie from iMovie 10 to iDVD to burn a disc

How do I get a movie from iMovie 10 to iDVD to burn a disc?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.
