Sizing a photo

Greetings All.....I am having the hardest problem trying to do something that is probably second nature to most of you. A while back I submitted a photo in a contest for possible publication. It was chosen to be published in the print and online magazines. Now for my problem. I was asked to send the photo "need 9 inches long side,300 dpi, RGB, JPG...". I'm not sure I know what I'm doing. Twice already I've received a response that the image is too small. I thought I did what was asked, but I'm obviously doing something wrong. Can anyone help me? I guess they have a tight deadline. I am using Lightroom 1 and have Windows XP. I can move the image to elements4 but things get even worse in there. Thanks in advance for your help. Have a happy holiday season...Paul

Similar Problem..................but different.
I have a series of photos shot in at 3782 X 2592 which equates to a ratio of 1.49. I am trying to fit these photos in a 4 X 3 Digital Photo Frame. I have tried all of the Export options in LR. No matter which setting I use (width x height, dimension, short edge, long edge) I keep coming back to 1.49. Am I misunderstanding what the resizing feature is about?
Should I be thinking "cropping?"

  • LR4 Sizing a photo in export

I seem to have problems sizing an image and exporting. Before, I always cropped and rotated my photos in PS, but as I more and more use LR, I am finding problems.
When I export, I set my sizes W5400 x H3600 for horizontal and LR4 exports at various sizes, cutting short one size. For example I have just gone through a video and checked the correct boxes and still its fails to provide an image exactly at the sizes I want. My latest exports are horizontal 5400x3594 and a vertical 3597x5400...
If I set it at 3600 x 5400 and vice cersa, those parameters are what I set and what I want, no compromise.....is this a LR fault or am I missing something?

    Thanks Jim,
I never have checked the "Dont Enlarge" box, during export as i assumed it would change the cropped image to my specific sizes upon exporting....sounds more of a complication than a help.
I have also found a few problems with the crop ratio tool, it seems to unlock on every picture. When i'm working on a batch of images, i'd like it to stay on a ratio of 3:2 but it changes each time...
Sounds like cropping in PS as my long and trusted program of choice. I have custom programmed PS to what I want...
I will keep gnawing at LR until I get it right or give it the elbow in favour of PS and BR..

  • Sizing background photo in finder

I am trying customize my finder windows. I know how to add a photo to a finder window (select icon view, show view options, picture) but the picture does not size to the window. Is there an easy way to size a picture to fit the finder window?

Thanks for the reply Peter and I apologize for my delay in responding.
What I am looking to do is specific to the "icon view" as decribed in this OSX tip of the week.
    http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/photobackground.html
If I am using a high quality picture, only part of the picture will show. Here is an example. The first picture is a screenshot of what is happening. The second, is an example of a picture that I would like to be sized to the window. Currently, when I add a picture to the background, only part of the picture (in this case the head) is being shown.

  • Ideas for HELP sizing a photo to display as a menu background

Hey gang. I'm authoring in iDVD and have a photo with DVD credits that I want to display as a menu background. There won't be any buttons on the page. Just this image of DVD credits. The iDVD manual tells you to size photos for an NTSC 4:3 display at 720 x 540 pixels. However, when I drop it onto the menu, it automatically enlarges the image so that there's only a partial view of the image. The only adjustment that can be made is vertically. I've even tried shrinking the image with text and mounting it on a matte so that it appears in the TV safe viewing area, but no luck there. Same thing happens. Any ideas? If someone want to mess around with the image, let me know and i'll email it to you. Thanks!

hey there koshercuts, welcome to Discussions.
have you tried to edit your pic in iPhoto before dropping it into the iDVD menu? this is where you edit your pix, not in iDVD. also see this: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/, Dan's site has a lot of great info, especially "Tips & Tricks".
    good luck.

  • Re-sizing a photo in Photoshop Elements 10

I am new to Photoshop Elements.  I just installed Photoshop Elements 10 and Premiere Essentials 10.  I have used Paint Shop Pro for many years.
This was a very easy procedure in Paint Shop Pro, but I cannot find any help as how to do it in Photoshop Elements 10..............I post items with
pictures on Craig's List and I need to "re-size" my photos as they are too large and too slow to upload.  Can someone tell me how to make my
photos smaller while maintaining the original ratio.
Thank you for any help you might be able to give me.  If my question is not clear or you do not understand it, please let me know.

If you want to do a whole batch for your website use full edit and click file à process multiple files.
If you select a new destination folder you won’t overwrite your originals.

  • Having trouble sizing a photo for wallpaper in iOS 7

When I try to move and scale a photo for my home screen wallpaper on my iPad3, using iOS 7, it immediately reverts to it's original size, which is larger than the screen. Is this a bug in iOS 7 or am I doing something wrong?

I was able to move and scale the wallpaper on my iPad 4 by turning off the parallax motion....
Go to Settings > General > Assessibility > Reduce Motion "set to OFF"
Next, in Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness > Choose Wallpaper (pick the wallpaper) - you should now be able to "Move and Scale" the photo that you've chosen for your wallpaper.
After you've SET the wallpaper, you can go back to Parallax motion by turning Reduce Motion to "ON" (see step 1)

  • Re-sizing a photo then emailing it

I have received a large photo on a pdf  in my email and I would like to re-size the photo (make it smaller) so that I can
forward it to another email address. It must be 200kb in size. How do I re-size and save the photo and forward the new adjustments
    to another email address?

If you need to do that only once, you can download the Acrobat trial version, then save the document as an optimized PDF.

  • Sizing a photo using the Adobe game called In Design

Could someone once again explain how one grabs the corner of a placed photo and resizes it like the old In Design once did so easily and smoothly.
Place curser point in corner square then? What obscure finger key combo comes next during the drag corner of placed photo to size it action?
    Thank you,
    Garrett

Could you explain what you mean by that? Updating a book has nothing to do, in my experience with scaling images, but there are issues with opening a legacy .indb file, and the component .indd file, in a newer version. If you want to move a book forward, my recommendation would be to export all the component files to .inx or .idml from the original version, open those thi the new version and save as ne documents (don't overwrite the old versions), then add these new files to a new .indb book file and proceed.

  • Re-sizing my photos

I need to know how to re-size my photo so that I can enter it in an art show. The rules are very specific and state that the photos of the artwork need to be on a CD and the "images in jpeg format 300dpi@4"x6" = 1200x1800 pixels. Can someone tell me how to do this? And how do I check a photo to be sure that it is the right size? And then when I put it on a cd...how would the judges know that it is the correct size? Thanks so much, Char

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Since iPhoto changes the dpi to 72 and the print size enlarges accordingly you'll have to export the 4x6 cropped files out of iPhoto to a folder on the hard drive and use a 3rd party image editor to set the dpi to 300 while keeping the print size to 4x6. This will increase the number of pixels in the width and height fields.
This screenshot video of Photoshop Elements changing the dpi of a photo shows what happens when you change the dpi from 72 to 180. You will have to change the dip to 300 and the print size to 4x6 which will change the number of pixels.
GraphicConverter can convert to a specific dpi and print size as well as Photoshop Elements and some others.

  • I need help putting together different sized video/photo

I just got back from a trip to Yellowstone National Park.  I want to put three different pieces of media - GOPRO HD video shot at 1280 x 960, NIKON jpegs at 3872 x 2592, and SDV (Sony DCR-TRV33) shot at 16:9 resolution (can't figure out pixel size.)  I have Compressor (of course) and also MPEG Streamclip.
First of all I need to convert the GOPRO HD (compressed at h.264) and digitize the SDV.  What format would be best for editing and integrating the three pieces of media - Apple Pro Res, DV/DCVPRO, ...
1280 x 960 is 4:3 (too late to change the SDV to 4:3) so what would be the best compromise?
    Thanks for the help,
    William

So you recommend digitizing (log and capture) the SDV in FCP as a ProRes (422?)  Also convert the h.264 (GOPRO) to ProRes.  Trim the jpegs in Photoshop (is there a simple batch program that can do this?)
When you say to leave the GOPRO in it 1280x960 frame size so it can be re-framed in a Sequence - how does that work?
I'd just use ProRes 422 for both types of video. You could probably get along with ProRes LT for the SD, but I like to keep things simple.
Create your timeline by dropping a "SDV" clip in and answering "yes" to the auto-conform question that will appear. This should give you a 16:9 aspect ratio SD timeline. Now, when you drop in a GoPro clip it will scale down and try to fit in.
If you double click it into Viewer and go to the Motion tab, you can hit the Reset button (the one with the red X) and you will have a 1280x960 clip again. It will seem as if you're looking at it through a hole in a template; you can "steer" it or resize it just as you usually do with a still. You can do a zoom in or out on the video, or pan from side to side.
Use this to sharpen your story visually. Have fun with it.

  • Problem with Photos and Camera and Sizing Set

I have a 3gs and upgraded to 4.0. Things seemed fine but yesterday when I opened up the Camera Roll in Photos there was 1 picture showing and a large black rectangular box. No other photos were showing. I tapped on the black box and it showed all the photos using the slider to go from 1 to the next. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the black box so that all the photos showed up normally, so I deleted each of the photos. The size of the box shrank as each photo was deleted. Then when I went into Photos, it opened with an empty screen and immediately closed. I then tried to use the Camera and it started up and immediately closed. So I sent myself an email with a photo and saved it to Photos. Its there and so is the black box! Now the camera will work! To further complicate, I decided I'd use the photo for wallpaper. Problem is I can't size it!! I can move it and size it with my fingers, but then when I release, it immediately pops back to full size and I can't "Set" the image size. Does anyone have any idea what's going on!!

Well I solved it. I uploaded my photos to My Gallery. Then I took a photo with the camera and saved it. I then deleted all the other photos except the one I just took. Then I exited Photos and then came back in and it was working fine, so I then downloaded the photos that I had just uploaded to My Gallery. Still have a problem though with sizing the photos for the Lock and Home screens. I can't get the Set button to hold a size. Any ideas on that?

  • Help with still photo project in premiere 11

I'm new to Premiere 11.  I did a project using only stills and music from my macbook pro. The project is about 6.5 minutes long and uses only dissolves and a couple of exposure adjustments. The orange line runs across the top of the entire project so I thought it needed to be rendered. When I hit the render button, nothing happens. I tried to burn it to dvd as is and it burns to 99% and ejects. It will not play in a dvd player although it will play on the computer at a very low quality, poor resolution. Obviously I am missing something. Any ideas???...thanks

    RaySull
Depending on your computer resources and Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 or 8 64 bit as a 64 bit application, you may or may not be able to stretch the classic recommendations for sizing for photos for use in a project destined for DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc. Those recommendations are: for SD, pixel dimensions not to exceed 1000 x 750 pixels and for HD, pixel dimensions not to exceed about 2200 x 1238 pixels. But, since you are experiencing problems with the project that you now have in place, I would encourage you to go by the classical recommendation for photo sizing.
But keep this in mind...your photos are 3072 x 2048 (3:2) and your DVD-VIDEO is going to be 4:3 or 16:9. If it were just a matter of 4:3 to 4:3, then you would resize. But, when you are going from 3:2 to 4:3 or 16:9, you should consider cropping and resizing. Most of the programs offer batch resizing, some batch cropping and resizing. The free IrfanView program is often mentioned for batch cropping/resizing, while programs such as Photoshop Elements (Process Multiple Files) and Photoshop (Automate/Batch) are frequently mentioned for batch resizing.
When you are ready for Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc and are in the burn dialog (with your DVD disc in the burner tray) you will see in the Quality area Space Required and Bitrate information.
All this does throw into the mix what project preset ot use. In this instance, I would suggest that you set the project preset yourself via File Menu/New/Project. If you crop/resize the photos for DVD-VIDEO widescreen, then set the project preset yourself for NTSC (or PAL) DV Widescreen. If you crop/resize the photos for DVD-VIDEO standard, then set for NTSC (or PAL) DV Standard.
Please do not hesitate ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thanks.

  • Vertical Photos are cropped

I am trying to prepare my first digital presentation using Keynote and I have sized the photos to 1000 pixels on the long side. When reviewing my slides, the horizontal images look great, but the vertical are cropped at the top and bottom (almost a square) How do I fit the verticals into the presentation?
    Thanks in advance!
    J. Paul

    Hi J-Paul,
click on the image and see if it is masked, even if you did not apply the mask yourself if it is a place holder it is a mask of sorts. When clicking on the image if the image is masked a little semi-transparent menu appears on or near the image that controls the size of the image you can also move the photo around in the mask.
I hope that is it because there is no other vertical control as you describe in the other application.
You may also try to add a slide with a vertical photo already planned in and move your picture there, arrange it the way you want and see if it works. A cut and past would quickly solve the problem.

  • How do I crop without aperture re-enlarging the photo? Can I maintain size of crop without drastically affecting size of mega pixel output for online data transfer to print site?

HOW DO I CROP WITHOUT APERTURE RE-SIZING THE PHOTO? CAN I MAINTAIN THE SELECTED CROP SIZE (VERY SLIGHT EDGE TRIM) WITHOUT
DRASTICALLY AFFECTING THE MEGAPIXEL SIZE BEING SENT TO ONLINE PRINTING SITE?

Note the "Size" read out on the crop popup this tells you the size your cropped image wil be. eg. The image here is a 21 megapixel image, cropping the image like so reduces the file size to 5MP, your exported file size can only be a max of this 5MP.
    Hope this Helps, (HTH)

  • Photos transferring OFF of iphone 4

I've been trying to "delete" some photos off my Iphone to no avail. I've tried importing them from my iphone to my apple MacBook Pro, but they won't transfer---please help--what am I doing wrong??
    Thanks
    Mary

When you sync photos to your phone, iTunes "optimizes" these photos for display on your phone. I, obviously, have no idea what you did when you sized these photos yourself. Thus, I cannot say for certain that they were further reduced in resolution when you synced them to your phone. I was merely making you aware of how the photo sync process works. Regardless, if you want to recover these photos, you'll have to use third-party software to do so, as Apple makes no provision to recover them. The photo sync is one way: Computer to phone.
