Sleep for an hour

I use a Mac mini as a file server and a media server at home. It's now on pretty much 24/7, which is a waste of energy and I'd like to reduce that energy use but not have to do anything for it. So here is the 'logic' I've come up with ....
+"if no network traffic has occurred in the last 3 minutes, go to sleep for an hour unless you can ping the laptop or frontrow is running"+ --- the latter two cases are situations where i'd like to retain access to the mini even if I havent used it in the last few minutes.
If I dont do anything, it will wake up after an hour and then go back to sleep after 3 minutes.
The only unpleasant situation I can think of is that if I come home just after it has gone to sleep. But in the rare cases that I need immediate access to files I'll have to activate it manually.
My problem is:
*How can I make the Mac sleep for X number of minutes and then automatically wake up again, without the use of an external system and Wake-on-LAN.*

The following C program will generate a date/time n seconds from now in the correct date/time format for pmset.
#include <time.h>
#include <stdio.h>
int main (int argc, char *argv[]) {
time_t timetnow;
time_t timetthen;
struct tm tm_t;
char strtime[256];
if (argc != 2) {
printf ("%s:\nUsage: %s numberof_seconds_fromnow\n", argv[0], argv[0]);
return 2;
timetnow = time (NULL);
timetthen = timetnow + atoi (argv[1]);
localtime_r (&timetthen, &tm_t);
strftime (strtime, sizeof (strtime), "%D %T", &tm_t);
printf ("%s\n", strtime);
return 0;
The program can be compiled if XCode is installed, by saving the program as timeplus.c and then compiling using cc timeplus.c -o timeplus
niihau:TEMP marko$ timeplus 3600

  • My mac will not reboot after hibernating for one hour. Is there something I am missing?

    When my mac ibernates (sleeps) for one hour it appears to freeze and the only way I can reboot it is to turn it off at the power source and then turn it on again. Is there some simple remedy I am missing?

    Your Boot Drive may be dying.
    Do not wrestle with it now. Instead, take a new drive and Install Mac OS X on it from scratch. If you do not have an available drive, buy one -- they are well under US$100. There is no need to shuffle drives around, your Mac will boot from whatever drive is specified in System Preferences > Startup Drive.
    Once you have a working version of Mac OS X, the full Mac OS X can be applied to resolving those other problems. Solving problems with just the Installer and its Utilities is very difficult.

  • Can I leave my display on for 4 hours?

    I'm downloading something that takes 4 hours on the macbook, is it alright if I leave my macbook on but put the screen to sleep for 4 hours?

    I don't see why not.
    If your display is asleep, there's no risk of burn-in or anything. Otherwise that sounds fine.

  • My iPhone 4S is dark, this is the second time.  The first time i was able to get it back on by plugging in into my PC.  However this time i have had it plugged in for an hour or so and nothing.  I have done the Start/sleep buttons

    My iPhone 4s is dark, this is the second time.  The first time I was able to get it back up and running by plugging it into my PC.  However this time it has been plugged in for an hour or more and nothing. There was still at least 70% charge left on it when it went dead.  I have pressed the sleep and start button separately and together.  It said that I did not have much space left this morning so I deleted Apps and photos but there was still space.  Just two days ago it was losing power even though it still 55% charge left so I plugged it in and it seemed to gain power.  Any suggestions on the problem?

    Sounds like faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take to Apple for quick (minutes) free battery diagnostic testing. If you have Warranty or AppleCare the problem will be covered.

    No one here works for Apple. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Everyone here is a volunteer. You tend to get from this forum what you bring to it. If you come in ranting and raving and saying you're going to throw your iPhone out the window and that Apple is mean, people are not likely to respond to you with sweetness and light and puppies and kittens.

    You probably need to recalibrate the battery. See link below.
    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
    How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • How to kill Forms Runaway Process using 95% CPU and running for 2 hours.

    We had a situation at E-Business Suite customer (using Oracle VM server) where some of Form processes were not being cleared by form timeout settings automatically.
    Also when user exits the form session from front end, the linux form process (PID) and DB session did not exit properly, so they got hung.
    They were spiking CPU and memory usage and causing e-business suite to perform slowely and ultimately causing VM host to reboot the production VM guest (running on Linux).
    We could see the form processes (PIDs) using almost 100% cpu with "top" command and running for a long time.
    Also we verified those Form Sessions did not exist in the application itself.
    ie. Using from Grid Control -> OAM-> Site Map -> Monitoring (tab) -> "Form Sessions".
    It means that we could safely kill that form process from Linux using "kill -9 <PID>" command.
    But that required a continuous monitoring and manual DBA intervention as customer is 24x7 customer.
    So, I wrote a shell script to do the following;
    •     Cron job runs every half an hour 7 days a week which calls this shell script.
    •     Shell script runs and tries to find "top two" f60webmx processes (form sessions) using over 95% cpu with 2 minutes interval.
    •     If no process is found or CPU% is less than 95%, it exits and does nothing.
    •     If top process is found, it searches for its DB session using apps login (with hidden apps password file - /home/applmgr/.pwd).
    a.     If DB session is NOT found (which means form process is hung), it kills the process from unix and emails results to <[email protected]>
    b.     If DB session is found, it waits for 2 hours so that form process times automatically via form session timeout setting.
    It also emails the SQL to check the DB session for that form process.
    c.     If DB session is found and it does not timeout after 2 hours,
    it kills the process from unix (which in turn kills the DB session). Output is emailed.
    This are the files required for this;
    1. Cron job which calls the shell script looks like this;
    # Kill form runaway process, using over 95% cpu having no DB session or DB session for > 2hrs
    00,30 * * * * /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh 2>&1
    2. SQL that this script calls is /home/applmgr/frm_runaway.sql and looks like;
    set head off
    set verify off
    set feedback off
    set pagesize 0
    define form_client_PID = &1
    select count(*) from v$session s , v$process p, FND_FORM_SESSIONS_V f where S.AUDSID=f.audsid and p.addr=s.paddr and s.process='&form_client_PID';
    3. Actual shell script is /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh and looks like;
    # Author : Amandeep Singh
    # Description : Kills runaway form processes using more than 95% cpu
    # and Form Session with no DB session or DB session > 2hrs

    If you have the same problem with some other unix and DB processes, the script can be easily modified and used.
    But use this with thorough testing first (by commenting out <kill -9 $PID1> lines.
    Good luck.

    My iPhone 4 has been dead for 24 hours and I've been charging it for 12 hours and it still won't turn on. I have tried holding the lock button and home button down, even connected it to computer but nothing's happening, it randomly died on me.

    Hi Lauren,
    When troubleshooting power issues, we want to make sure we have followed all steps outlined in the following article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    - Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    - Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion.
    Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    - Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    - After at least 15 minutes, if:
                   - The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
                   - The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
                   - Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    - If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
                   - If the display turns on, go to step 4.
                   - If the display remains black, go to next step.
    - Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to
    restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    - If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • LabVIEW program crashes after running for few hours

    Hello,
    I am doing some experiments at the moment which are supposed to last for 18 hours.
    Basically, I use a LabVIEW program to control a power supply through a LabJack U6 DAQ. I am currently using LabVIEW 8.5 on Windows 7.
    In order to do that, I use a laptop where everything has been disabled such as power management settings, network access is off, windows updates are also off...
    As far as I know, the computer can't turn into sleep mode or just shut down (I'm a 100% sure of that actually).
    But last night, I started an 18 hours experiment at 5 pm, and when I came in this morning, the program shutted down by itself. Fortunately, the power supply is still providing the voltage I want, but I can't figure out why the program crashes.
    When I start the experiment, it also automatically starting saving data in a spreadsheet file (I guess the size of the file should be 36 MB), so it might be a problem of memory access or something.
    I really don't know what could have cause this crash, does someone have an idea?
    I saw some other threads similar to my problem but I am not running an executable, I am running the front panel directly from the editing mode.

    Hi,
    thank all of you for your quick answers!
    @Josborne : I do not have an error handling in my program. Actually you can look at my program in the attachment file. This is my first LabVIEW program so I've never dealt with error in and error out function... Moreover, what is a log file exactly?
    @Johnsold : Yes, I am building an array continously growing over time. Actually, my program stops saving data when you hit the "STOP" button, it doesn't write into a spreadsheet file through a period of time, that is something I eventually need to correct.
    @LabJackSupport : I can try to reduce my time step, so far it's 100 ms. I have a problem with disconnecting the USB cable from the computer though : for no reason, if I just unplug the connection between the LabJack U6 and the computer, my power supply will just go providing 157 Volts! And for my experiment, this is something we don't want to have so we just leave it as it is now. Disabling some part of the program is a good idea, I can try it
    Thank you for your answers

    Hello bigboza,
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    For more information, take a look at:
    iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
    If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
    If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
    If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
    Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
    If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
    If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
    If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
    Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
    If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.

  • I am trying to erase all contents on my iphone 4, its been running for 6 hours now, is this normal?

    I am trying to erase all contents on my phone, I am trying to get it back to factory settings,  I don't have any jailbreaks or anything like that on my phone, The circle thing has been running for six hours now, is this normal? Before I did that, I tried to do it through itunes, and it would not restore it through there either? Im at a loss?? That took only like 5 min before it says sorry it could not be restored. This is taking forever....

    Hello Stephiworld,
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
    It sounds like you are trying to restore the phone to its factory defaults but the process is stalled or the phone is totally unresponsive.
    If the phone will respond to the Sleep/Wake button, I would turn it off the normal way, then turn it back on.
    iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    When it turns back on try the Erase All Content and Settings option again.
    If the iPhone is completely unresponsive and will not turn off normally, I would reset the device with this process from the above article:
    If your device stops responding, you can reset it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • I'm charging my iPad. But everytime it goes to turn on it will just turn off right away. This has been going on for two hours now. What do I do?

    I'm charging my iPad. But everytime it goes to turn on it immediately shuts off. This has been going on for two hours. What do I do?

    First, you can try resetting your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears. Try again to see if the problem persists.
    If yes, it may not be charging properly. Be sure you are using the charger that came with the iPad. The iPad 2 requires a 10W charger. If you are using a different charger, including the one that came with an iPhone, it will charge very slowly if at all.
    Also try charging a different device with the charger to be sure it and the cable are working properly.

  • IMac G5 2.1Ghz iSight sleeps for no apparent reason

    My iMac G5 2.1Ghz iSight (EMC 2082) sometimes goes to sleep while i am using it for no apparent reason, even when I am using the keyboard and mouse and even when the Energy Saver settings are both set to 'never'. The screen saver has no 'hot-corners' set. It usually happens after I have been using the computer for an hour or more. The computer always wakes from sleep by tapping the keyboard (and entering my password), but then goes to sleep again soon afterwards (within a minute). This has been happening for about 2 weeks. I have reset the PRAM and SMU. Anyone have a similar problem and fix?
    iMac G5 2.1Ghz iSight EMC 2082   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Noticed this in the system.log:
    Apr 28 19:22:49 iMac-G5-2-1Ghz kernel[0]: IOSMUPwrController:: OverTemp notification
    Apr 28 19:22:49 iMac-G5-2-1Ghz kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.AirPort: Link DOWN (Client disAssoc 0)
    What does this mean?
    Don't think it is peripherals, haven't changed them in ages, only change has been to switch to a faster broadband speed (512k to 1.5m).
    Seems to happen when CPU use is intensive. In X Resource Graph I noticed the CPU T-Dio temp and Nb Temp (whatever that is) go up to 175ºF -181ºF when CPU is 100%.
