Slow first connection using Oracle 10g xe and Visual Studio 2008

{noformat}
Good day,
I'm slightly unaccustomed to using forums, so bear with me.
My initial connection to the Oracle database takes approximately 30 seconds. It seems to be waiting for a connection before timing out and trying another connection which works, as all subsequent connections work immediately. I'm unsure how other people's responses in forums can help me due to the plethora of configurations, so here's mine. My comprehension of the oracle world is still growing, you'll have to explain the terms you're using for me, Hoping you can help.
I'm using Visual Studio 2008, set to use 32 bit debug mode, on a Windows 7 Pro platform. Also using Oracle 10g Xe, and have installed the 32 bit version of ODAC 11.2 (11.2.0.1) to aid making a connection from Visual Studio to Oracle.
I have a database set up and a user with system admin rights. This is all local for a programming project and will never see the light of day outside of my personal machine.
I am using code to connect, not the GUI. I wish to code this project completely without the aid of the GUI. so my connection string within Visual Studio C# is (pw/id hidden)...
string xe = "Data Source=xe;User Id=xxxxx;Password=xxxxx;";
OracleConnection conn = new OracleConnection(xe);
My c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora file is this:
# sqlnet.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT, ONAMES, HOSTNAME)
And my c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\TNSNames.ora file is this:
tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
XE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = xe)
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <machine name)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = PLSExtProc)
Just for good measure, my tnsping xe shows:
"Used paramter files:<br/>
c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora<br/><br/>
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias<br/>
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = xe)))
OK (0 msec)"
So, how can I make that initial connection faster so I don't spend 15 years testing my application due to slow start-ups? :)
Thank you.
Kevin.

I have formatted my hard drive since my first post. I was running window 64 bit with a higher version of the ODAC and that proved to crash my machine with faulty error messages about memory. I have reverted to a previous version of the ODAC tools and everything works very smooth now. Still the connection time is consistently 20 seconds or longer on the first attempt.
Just a little more information.. I am currently taking a college course with 15 other students, as you can tell by the impersonal machine name, where programming using visual studio 2008, and Oracle 10g xe is expected. All of us are using a 64 bit environment and we all have difficulties cutting down the load time of making the first connection to Oracle. Some people are longer making the connection, but none are shorter.
One other note. After the first connection is made, taking 20 or more seconds, and is closed, all subsequent openings of the connection are instantaneous, for all of us.
If there is ANYTHING more I can get for you, please let me know. With my environment stable as it is, I will not need to format or change any information for the foreseeable future.
Here is the information you requested
1 The connection method I am using, I have chosen the manual connection for you, however the delay exists if the connection is made through the GUI as well.
Historically, I am getting slow connection speeds through adding the connection through the GUI or by a manual connection. Here is how I am doing it manually. I have the connection being created in 20 seconds, which is the best I can get.
Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client
Also included project reference: oracle.dataaccess / version 2.111.6.20

        Dim con As OracleConnection = New OracleConnection()
        con.ConnectionString = connString
        Try
            con.Open()
            MessageBox.Show("Connected!")
            con.Close()
            con.Dispose()
        Catch ex As Exception
            MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)
        End Try
    End SubMy current TNS Ping results

I fought for weeks about the ODAC version 11.2.0.1 that you see in the previous post, and that would be a whole new thread. Suffice it to say I have a reliable environment to program in with this 10.2.0.1.0 version that I am running now, and the connection time has not changed, it is still minimum 20 seconds load time, sometimes up to 25.

  • Oracle 11 g connection with asp dot net in visual studio 2008

    Hi to all,
                  My application is using oracle 11 g as database in an asp dot net project . this was basically a project in asp dot net with sql server as a database . but now this need oracle 11 g as database . I have complete the db work, but i m getting the connection problem in visual studio (2008) with oracle 11 g .
    I know for this it need a driver oracle.data.access  ,, i do nt know which version it need ?
    I have this dll . but version of it may be  earlier. thats why it is not working properly
    i have 11 g installed on the server computer , and we can only use it only on browser , I have a global.asax as a file in my dot net project in which connection string is written but i m getting error , something like ora10cc .
    first i do not know , which odac version i have to download i have  a link for this ,
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html
    but which version exactly , this page is so confusing, for oracle 11 g, and visual studio 2008 which version will be perfect
    and then where the dll will be there. after getting  the setup, Is  i need to install that setup?
    one more confusion , where i have to install that odac , on my computer system . or on the server side system , I just need that dll file ,,
    One more thing , Is there any error in my connection string ,,
    my connection is as  follows
    "Persist Security Info=False; User ID= system; Initial Catalog=LabTrack;Server=Comp-34;Data Source=192.168.1.61\oracle11g;Password=abcd1234; DBA Privilege=normal;"
    192.168.1.61 is ip addres of system, where my oracle 11 g is install ,
    and comp-32 is my user name
    labtrack is my db  name
    Is there any need of provider name ?
    sumbody pls help me
    i m getting problem in at from 3 days
    If u can then contact me , on [email protected] , otherwise reply me here
    thanks in advance
    regards Nimish Goel

    The file at the top of that link should work fine with Oracle 11g.
    I would start trying to get the client to work outside of Visual Studio, first.  That way you can localize your issues.
    Once you get the Oracle client connected to the Oracle server, then uou can start working on Visual Studio.
    As for where to install it, I'd say start with your computer.  I'm not sure how you do your development, but that would probably be a good place to start.
    You may want a different download for the web server as I assume you wouldn't need the special Visual Studio tools on it.  But yes, it will need whichever Oracle provider you choose installed on it as well.

  • Problem to connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 at Vista sp2

    Introduction
    Hi guys, good day... NEED RESCUE!! SOS!! Hmm.. i have trouble been 1 weeks trying connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 on window vista sp2. Actaully im very new at Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 but i got a project is going to build up system database and i figure out Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 can use free so i just chows these appication to be my project. I been search around internet and there is several things i was found about the connection but i has try and tried still it wont work out.
    Things i found and learned
    Oracle
    1. I have download Oracle 10g XE and installed in my windows vista sp2.
    2. I notice the Oracle Developer Tools is needed for VB2010 (To add reference 'Oracle.DataAccess'). So i was downloaded ODT11beta and installed
    3. I also edit TNSNAMES to following below:
    OraDb =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = shin-PC)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    4. My sqlnet like following below:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
    5.I have try tnsping OraDB and its works.
    6. I monitoring task manager and OracleServicesXE is running.
    7. ora_dba is added in Group.
    Problem in SQLPLUS
    When i try connect SQLPLUS in cmd i get ERROR: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
    i . In cmd i type sqlplus and enter then i been ask for username and password.
    ii. After i insert my username and password and enter then i get the error of ORA-12560.
    Visual Basic 2010
    1. First i created my project, drawing label and button for test connection.
    2. Then, i add reference Oracle.DataAccess into my project.
    3. I type following script into my vb form:
    Imports System.Data
    Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client
    Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Types
    Public Class Logon
    Private Sub cmdLogon_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdLogon.Click
    Dim oradb As String = "Data Source = OraDb; User Id = system; Password = shin;"
    Dim conn As New OracleConnection(oradb)
    conn.Open()
    Dim cmd As New OracleCommand
    cmd.Connection = conn
    cmd.CommandText = "select SName from Staff where SName = shin"
    cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
    Dim dr As OracleDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader()
    dr.Read()
    lblOra.Text = dr.Item("SName")
    conn.Dispose()
    End Sub
    End Class
    Problem in VB2010
    When i run my project and press the button i get error message ORA-12514: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified at conn.Open()
    Extra Question*
    1. Im notice in my netbook xp home sp2, before i install ODT11beta my sqlplus look fine thought cmd but after i installed ODT11beta its same problem with my Vista sp2 now. Get error ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error :( I tried uninstall ODT11beta again and restart its work fine again. Which i really dun understand. Izzit the version ODT11 is not suitable for 10g xe? And i dunno this problem is related with my connection between oracle 10g xe and vb2010 or not. So confuse@@
    2. I wish to know more about connect between Oracle and VB, is there still a things i miss?(I mean steps or configuration that should i done)
    3. Or i just lower my VB version could make more easy? If yes, what version VB should i use that could work out with oracle 10g xe?
    4. Sorry for too bad my english but i really wish somebody could help me. Please try to understand my written or you could ask me mean if dont understand. Im stuck!! Stuck feel not really that good.....

    Huhu..
    Yo, henry
    I thought the OraDb is just a name for entry but im not sure it is a service. I was refer http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/cook-vs08.html at topic Connection Strings and Objects.

    Izzit ok? I notice there is no listed OraDb. but tnsping OraDb seem fine.
    Actually there is somethings as a newbie i wondering long time alreadly ><
    1. The origin of tnsname.ora is no OraDb or ORCL but i just simple add it by open tnsname.ora with notepad. Im just not sure it is function or not.
    Also please check at my TNSNAME.ORA:

  • Connection Problem When Using Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio

    I tried to create an Oracle Connection in my Visual Studio 2008 after installing Oracle 11g, Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC) with Oracle Devleoper Tools for Vissual Studio version 11.1.0.6.20.
    I followed the directions according to "Building .NET Applications Using Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio, when I click Test Connection, I keep getting the error message below.
    Microsoft Visual Studio
    ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred
    OK
    ---------------------------

    I solved the problem.
    This is what I did for the benefit of the embryonic newbe like me.
    On the Add Connection Dialog
    1.     For Data source name I selected Local Database
    2.     I clicked on the specific User Name and I typed SYSTEM
    3.     For Password, I typed orcl (the password I setup during the installation) (HR did not work for me for User name and Password according to the tutorial instructions)
    4.     For Role, I selected Default
    5.     Connection Name, I selected Local Database
    6.     Before proceeding any further went to Windows XP SP3 where I was operating from, under Start Menu, I selected Administrative Tools then Services
    a.     On the Windows Services (Local) Dialog, under name, I selected OracleServiceORCL and OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener. I clicked on them one at a time
    b.     On the presented Dialog, under Service Status, I Clicked on the Start Button to start the Services
    c.     Then I went back to the Add Connection Dialog. I clicked on Test Connection, it connected okay. I finally clicked on Okay to connect.

  • Very slow first connection with Oracle.DataAccess 4.112.1.2

    Hello, I'm having some troubles with connecting using Oracle DataAccess component. In particular, when using .Net 4 Framework, the first connection to the database takes about 20-25 seconds!
    Here's my setup:
    - Web server running 64-bit Windows Web Server 2008 SP2 with IIS 7.0
    - Oracle server running 64-bit Windows Server Standard 2008 SP2 with Oracle 11g
    The version of ODAC component is 2.112.1.2 / 4.112.1.2
    The first strange thing is that, when I set an application on .NET 4 in IIS, I need to "Enable 32-bit Application" in order for it to work.
    I made some tests with a very simple query: "SELECT 1 FROM dual" and here's the results:
    - Classic ASP (ADODB.Connection): a fraction of a second to connect
    - .NET 2 with System.Data.OracleClient: a fraction of a second to connect
    - .NET 4 with Oracle.DataAccess: 20-25 seconds
    Moreover, if I launch the first connection thru Classic ASP, then the .NET 4 connection is very fast, as it happen in any case from the second connection on...
    This way, I excluded the problem is in the connection string, since it's always pretty much the same. I also excluded it could be a TNS problem, since they all use the same TNS (I think).
    That's all I've come up with, and I'm not a big Oracle expert so I hope someone here can help me sorting the situation out!
    Thanks,
    Stefano

    Thanks for your reply.
    I already tried messing around with that parameter.
    At the moment, it was set as:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)
    I commented it and nothing changed.
    Thanks anyway :)

  • ODAC with Oracle 10g and Visual Studio 2008

    Hello-
    Is the an ODAC version supporting Oracle 10g with tools for Visual Studio 2008? I've installed the ODAC 11.2 version for VS 2008, however the Oracle data source connection does not display for the Data Entity Model, only the usual SQL Server connections.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello again-
    First off, thank you for prompt reply. After poring over some of the postings, I'm gaining an understanding of when ODAC and the Entity Designer marriage came together and your answer solidified it.
    My situation is I've developed an ODATA service with VS2010, Oracle 11g and ODTwithODAC112030 and everything works fine. I then deploy the service to the company's Windows 2003 server using Oracle 10g. I've also went ahead an installed the ODTwithODAC112030 on the server and copied the tnsnames.ora file into the oracle client's directory associated with the ODAC installation. When I query the Oracle database's metadata in IE, e.g. http://localhost:8050/DataMgmt/$metadata, a listing is displayed as expected; however, when I query a particlar database table listed in the metadata, an error is returned that the request could not be processed. Any ideas?
    Thank you.

  • Unable to connect Oracle 10g Express from Visual Studio Server Explorer

    Hello,
    Please help me out here. I am connecting from Visual Studio 2008 to Oracle 10g Express Edition and the I have installed the ODAC 11 and the ODP.NET as well for Visual Studio(Both include Oracle Developer tools). But whenever I tried to connect from my Visual Studio 2008 server explorer so that I can have the database and its object there, I do get this error : "ORA-12560 : TNS: protocol adapter error."
    The following is what I specified in my connection box:
    DataSource Name: (Local Database)
    Username : HR
    Password: the password for it.
    My OS is : Windows Vista Ultimate.
    Please anyone who has solved such error should just help out here.
    Thanks all

    Thank you for your reply. I will like to know if you can use Visual Studio. In visual studio there is what we called Server Explorer and from there you can create connection and access all the database server from there. I am able to connect to the Oracle XE through the browser and I was able to crete table and other stuffs like that but when I tried to connect from Visual Studio 2008, I get the 12560 Error. I checked my TNSNAMES and found this:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = OLAMMIE)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    ORACLR_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = CLRExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    Look at what I have in my Sqlnet.Ora file,
    # This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
    # install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
    # authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    Please kindly help me out of this as it is very urgent. I can connect from browser using http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex but cannot connect from my C# code and Server Explorer. What is likely to cause this error.
    Thank you for helping me in advance.

  • XI, Service Packs and Visual Studio 2008

    Hi
    Sorry if these questions have already been answered but I have tried to search and get the answers myself with lots of link following and frustration.
    We are developing a Windows forms application using Visual Studio 2008.
    We need a good solid report tool for both designing and viewing reports based on SQL data.
    Due to past exposure to Crystal, we have decided to use a Developer Edition of Crystal Reports XI we have had for a long time (think it was a promotional offering when XI was first released).
    The Help-About version is 11.0.0.1282
    I have a couple of questions:
    1. What service packs can I apply to this build ? Looking on the download section of this web site, there are no updates available for XI (there are plenty for XI R1 and XI R2). Can I apply the R1/R2 updates to this build, if not can I upgrade to any of these builds ?
    2. I have noticed that even when installed after VS2008, the Crystal Version of the Viewer is still 10.5.0.0
    I can created reports in XI and use them with this viewer but can I get a XI build of the viewer and other .NET objects. If not what are the options (apart from upgrading to 2008, this is price restrictive).
    If there are already answers or knowledge-base articles containing the answers to these questions please just post the links, if not then some help would be appreciated as this whole thing is really confusing and I really don't want to go back to trying to use the Microsoft Reports package shipping with VS2008.
    Many thanks

    HI,
    First of all:
    If you are planning to use VS2008 then you need to use CR 2008 SP0 or above to make it compatible.
    1. What service packs can I apply to this build ? Looking on the download section of this web site, there are no updates available for XI (there are plenty for XI R1 and XI R2). Can I apply the R1/R2 updates to this build, if not can I upgrade to any of these builds ?
    Officially CRXI has reached the end of life cycle.
    Upgrade from CRXI R1 to R2 is free. You need to download the CRXIR2 sp2 setup and install the complete product alogn with SP2 using the CRXIR1 keycode.
    As stated you need to either use CR that comes with VS2008 or use CR2008 with SP0 or above. That is why you are unable to see the upgraded viewer. The other options would be to use VS2003 with CRXI and above or use VS2005 and CRXIR2 sp2 and above.

  • Using Crystal Reports XI with Visual studio 2008 C#

    Hi,
    I am trying to add some reports which have been created to a C# web application using the Crystal Reports web viewer in Visual Studio 2008. The reports use SQL authentication instead of integrated authentication.
    Everytime the page with the report viewer is loaded, im prompted for my logon details. I dont want the end users to be doing this. How do i integrate the logon details into my application so that it doesnt keep prompting using C#?? Also i have parameters which produce a drop down box of available values...this does not work within the web application but does in Crystal Reports.
    Any help would be good with examples in C# please. Ideally i would like to hold the connection info in the web.config however i dont know if this is possible.
    Thanks
    Vish

    Hi Vishal,
    Here's a link to the platforms for SP5:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/907e6412-a7ac-2b10-23a8-f837fcc78a37
    If the link doesn't work then go to this one: Articles
    And select the the CR version and look for the specific patch level. If you don't have patches installed I would suggest downloading and installing to get up to SP5.
    It does not indicate .NET 2008 so it's not been tested, it may work but if you run into any issues we don't have an escalation path to get it fixed.
    Thank you

  • Using Data Services WSDL with Visual Studio 2008

    I am attempting to use the Data Services XI 3.1 WSDL (I think this Data Integrator v 12.1) in Visual Studio 2008 and I am having some difficulty.
    I am getting the wsdl from the following location: http://devserver:28080/DataServices/servlet/webservices?ver2.0&wsdlxml
    When I attempt to add the web reference to a project all look fine, I see a display of all the methods and their parameter description, etc. but when the add is complete it appears to be unusable. Attempting to instanciate the web service and call the methods results in unreconizable data types. The web service does not show up in Intellisense as a reconizable class, etc.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    try adding a "Service Reference..."
    In the add Service Reference panel, click Advanced and then select Add Web Reference.  Enter the url to the WSDL and see if this works.
    If this continues to fail, try replacing 2.0 with 1.1 on your URL
    ie:   /webservices?ver1.1&wsdlxml
    if that still fails, past the URL in a browser and see if there are any error messages in the <documentation> tags.
    if you are still having issues, try posting to:

  • Crystal Reports 10 and Visual Studio 2008

    Hi All
    I've got an application that I recieved from my cleint. This is running Visual Studio 2008 and Crystal Reports 10 backend being Oracle 10.2
    However, when I try to run the applincation and open any report it pops up an error "crdb_oracle.dll" not found.
    I have searched this on the internet and found that there were many suggestions there. I've tried all the suggestions like reinstalling the Oracle client, Re Installing Crystal etc.,
    But the error remained as is.
    When i try to do a regsvr32 on this dll it fails. Am really not sure why this is happening
    Any help from any one out there is highly appreciated.
    Pavan
    UPDATE:
    I've verified the versions though. They are workign fine at the customer place.
    Here is what they have done.They have got Oracle, VS 2008 and Crystal Reports 10. They got the reports embedded into .NET environment and are able to view the reports.
    But when we try to execute the same code, it pops up the error, "Crdb_oracle.dll" could not be loaded.
    Wanted some support on this.
    Additionally, could you suggest on what needs to be done? Do we need to upgrade crystsal to crystal 2008? Will this work without any errors on the execution side (I'm sure that the customer of mine will not be happy or willing to upgrade but atleast if I get a confiramtion from you I can atleast quote this to the customer) and without any extra redesiging of the reports or any other work on the reports

    Hi, Pavan;
    Likely the problem is that the report was created with a different version of Crystal Reports than the one that ships with VS.NET 2008 (Which is Crystal Reports Basic for VS.NET 2008 - version 10.5). If the report was created with a full version of Crystal Reports, then it would have access to our native Oracle driver, the dll that is giving you the issue.
    The full version of Crystal Reports would install that dll, but the .NET version would not. In order to distribute that DLL, yes, the client would need to develop with the full version of Crystal Reports, in this case Crystal Reports 2008.

  • How to create ODBC connection between Oracle 10g and MS SQL Server

    Hi,
    Can someone help us with the steps to create an ODBC connection between Oracle APPS using Oracle 10g database and MS SQL Server.
    Requirement is to extract the transactional data from MS SQL Server on a daily basis and dump it into Oracle tables for an interface to be run. Currently it is being done through Dataloader tool which we feel is causing the data issue with Arabic characters. We want to create the ODBC directly between Oracle and MS SQL Server and check if the data is being pulled correctly.
    The data is in sql server 2000 which has data in Arabic_CI_AS character set which is moved to Oracle 10.2.0.3 database with characterset AL32UTF8. The table data is moved to oracle using the dataloader 3.6 standard edition licensed version. We cannot change the character set of Sql Server 2000.
    Please help
    Thanks
    Shanil

    Hi,
    If you're trying to PULL data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you wouldnt use Oracle ODBC driver for that, so you may want to post in the Heterogeneous Services forum instead:
    Heterogeneous Connectivity
    If you're trying to PUSH data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you could use ODBC but most folks use OLEDB for that, and the following note on MOS should help:
    How to Create a Sql Server Linked Server With The Oracle Provider for OLE DB     (Doc ID 191368.1)
    As with any NLS related issue, the first thing to do is dump the codepoints of the data in the Oracle database to see if it is stored validly, rather than relying on what the data "looks like" from some tool or other. It's best to check a single row, with only a few characters in it if you can, and you can do that via
    SELECT DUMP(<columname>,1016) FROM <tablename> WHERE ...
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

          e.printStackTrace();

    The code itself is fine; the problem is with one of:
    1) the connection URL
    2) intermediate networking
    3) the database itself
    1) your connection URL is "jdbc:oracle:thin:@127.0.0.1:1521:orcl"
    - is Oracle really running on the default port, 1521
    - is the installation SID really "orcl"
    2) lots of possibilities, but only a couple are likely
    - is TCP/IP configured and running on your host
    - is there a persoanl firewall rpduct running? perhaps it's blocking the connection
    3) Is Oracle running?
    Is the listener running?

  • Singl/Multiple Server Oracle 10g DB and AS- Advantages and DisAdvantages

    Hi Friends,
    I am using Application1 using Oracle 10g Application Server and Oracle 10g database.
    Now i planned to use Application2 using Oracle 10g AS and Oracle 10g DB
    I need to know what will be the Advantages and Disadvantages if i have the schema for Application2 in the existing Oracle 10g DB / having it in another Oracle 10g DB Server
    sameway what will be the advantages and disadvantages if i have the Application2 regsiterd in existing Oracle 10g AS(Multiple OC4J Instance) / having it in another Oracle 10g AS Server.
    Regards

    To start the list, for me some of the advantages are:
    Same DB:
    - less overhead and wasted CPU Cycles (therefore potentially lower license fees)
    - easier maintenance (backup, recovery)
    - easier tuning (fewer conflicting external environments asking for same resources)
    - Oracle is designed for this, allows use of Resource Manager
    - technically RAC is a clustered 'same DB'
    Same AS:
    - less overhead and wasted CPU Cycles (therefore potentially lower license fees)
    - easier maintenance (backup, recovery)
    - easier tuning (fewer conflicting external environments asking for same resources)
    - Oracle is designed for this, use AS clustering
    Different DB:
    - separate maintenance (patch, upgrade) cycles for different SLA
    - easier tuning (isolate tuning to one app)
    - easier security (most developers have no idea about Oracle security and make merge impossible)
    Different AS:
    - separate maintenance (patch, upgrade) cycles for different SLA
    - easier tuning (isolate tuning to one app)
    - easier security (most developers have no idea about security)
