Slow Internet surfing via Firefox

I just purchased my MBP a few days ago (OS 10.6.4). Noticed that Internet surfing is pretty slow, page takes a while to load when I launch a new website or click on hyperlinks. Has anybody experienced this problem and what could I have done to improve the surfing speed?

tanvivien, by +download time+ and +rendering time+ I meant the time that it takes for the browser to download the page via a clicked link to your hard disk, and the time that it takes for the browser to display the downloaded page from your hard disk. All too often, pages will have Flash advertisements embedded in them, and the rendering portion of displaying such pages in a browser will tend to take longer to display on OS X than on Windows.
When your Vista laptop and your MacBook Pro are running from the same wireless router, do they both establish the same type of connection? (On the Mac, under the Apple menu, check About This Mac → More Info… → Network → AirPort; under Interfaces, look for Current Network Information, and note what its PHY Mode value is. I don’t know how to check for the equivalent information in Vista.)

    Hi,
I have Mac pro 13-inc...the internet surfing is very slow in both Safari and Firefox ! .... It might be my internet services, however, even when I use high speed internet it's not that fast !! ...

Are you wireless or ethernet connected?  Internet surfing slow using both?
Call your isp to confirm that the problem is not on their end.  You can also test your speed at this website - http://www.speedtest.net/
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7

The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.

  • Saving internet files via Firefox

I'm trying to save internet pages, documents, files, etc via a Firefox format; my computer is saving them in Internet Explorer, instead. How do I resolve the problem?

Nope, IE works fine when I do not have Mozilla downloaded on my computer. When I download Firefox, it disables my entire network/internet connection after about an hour of use

  • Extremely slow internet surfing

    Hi all,
I just posted in the other forum about my daily mac freezes. But I'm also concerned about the long time it takes switching web pages. Its rediculous the amount of time it takes to submit a page, or just go to a website.
I've installed Firefox and its the same thing there..so I dont think its the Safari Application. My wireless connection is Excellent.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Is there some way to test or fix this?
    Appreciate any advice!

My set up is as follows. I have two lovely Macs in my home. My MacBook and my MiniMac. I also have a wireless connection in my home.
My MacBook zooms around online without any difficulty anywhere in the house.
My MiniMac, however, varies from slow to fast. When I check my AirPort status, it is often "Scanning..."
I tried that speedtest website and my numbers were as follows:
MiniMac: (multiple tests) Download speed of Lowest - .3MB/s (yes, you read that right) and the highest - 7.13. Upload speed Lowest - 1.95 and highest - 2.5
MacBook: Download speed - 22.10 and Upload speed - 2.6.
We've compared the settings of both our Macbook and our MiniMac.
Any ideas on why the MiniMac is soooo slow?
    Thank you.

  • Another slow internet connection via Airport Extreme wireless thread

Has anyone actually solved this mystery? The last substantial thread I came across regarding this subject ended with a solution using a dell wireless driver. That ended somewhere in December. Any solutions, tips?

I seem to have found a fix, thanks to Michael G. Noll (http://www.michael-noll.com/blog/2006/07/24/intel-imac-wireless-connection-slowd own-with-wpatkip/).
I switched to WAP Personal from WEP and my iMac is now able to connect via wifi from a router in another room, and at normal speeds! Thanks Mike! I hope it lasts. I also changed my routers channel and made it static instead of automatic, but I don't think this had anything to do with the fix (though it may have solved my MacBooks problem of dropping the connection for a second every minute or 2).
I still have the problem of having to manually select my network after start-up and wake-up, however. It does not turn on automatically.

  • Significantly slow internet

Setting up time capsule was fine, didnt take that long and not too many obstacles to face. I also bought the new n capable express that is extending my network as we speak. But the main issue I have is my internet speed, my linksys router which is bridged to the TC is getting much better speeds then the network that the TC is on. If I do speedtest.net my TC gets an average of 6 mbps. The linksys is consistently getting 15+ mbps. Whats the deal with that!! I thought that having the Airport express would help to give higher speeds to parts of the house that otherwise never got much coverage. If this is what is going to be expected from TC then I might as well return it and stick to the realiable linksys wrt54g.
p.s. as far as the specs of airport utility is concernced; TC is set to 802.11n [email protected] becuase 5ghz made connection speeds worse, its set to channel 2,WPA2 Personal
when i sit with my mbp right next to the TC i get 30+ mbps but its horrible in the spot that i use it the most. in the same spot linksys completely blows it out the water

Check your DNS settings. Compare them to your older router. This is usually the main reason you'll get slow internet surfing performance.
If you want to test it, temporarily set your DNS settings (on the TC) to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. These use the Domain Name servers from OpenDNS.Com which are free to the public. They'll bypass your ISP's DNS settings, but may be enough to determine if that is what the problem is. If you're using static IP addressing on your computer, check those settings as well.
I seriously doubt it's an issue with the TC, unless, on the remote chance you got a bad one. Most of the time it's the configuration.
Good luck, let us know what you find out!

Suddenly today I am unable to view my Google Calendar via Firefox. But I can view it with Internet Explorer. What gives?

I have tried deleting all cookies and cache several times, but nothing works. I can open Google calendar but when I click on any entry I just get a blank box. If I try to make a new event entry nothing happens. Everything works fine in Internet Explorer.
I am really getting tired of constant problems with Firefox. Every week I have something that doesn't work. One time it's downloading videos, the next week music or email, now Google calendar. I am about ready to give up Firefox forever.

  • Slow internet via wifi

i'm posting again about the slow airport where the webpages start to load and pause for 10 seconds then continue to load VERY slowly.
i called apple, they said it's my card or the router. i brought it to the store and it worked fine, so i'm assuming it's my router.. but what is wrong with my router?
it works well with everyother computer in the house, even a powerbook.
why is it JUST my MBP that has insanely slow internet via wifi?
    i have a netgear wgr614v3..
should i buy a new router just because my MBP doesn't work good with it?
    thanks!

That is what I ended up doing. Though in my case it was not just my computer but my wifes Toshiba as well. They both have the Atheros based cards. I have seen reports regarding issues with the Atheros cards and certain D-Link, Linksys and Netgear routers though the one I had as a Belkin Pre-N.
The issue I had was in using the WPA security. It worked fine with WEP but had the symptoms you describe with WPA.
I recent replaced it with a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v2 and they both appear to be working fine so far. My Dell notebook which is not Atheros based had no problems with either router.

  • HT1338 my computer it's very slow when surfing the internet?

my computer it's very slow when surfing the internet

    Hello again
As suggested I checked all CPU data in the Activity Monitor folder and could not see anything running that appeared to be draining CPU space or competing with other applications.  The following are the results from the Activity Monitor data:
    CPU:  %User - 0.37, %System - 0.62, %Idle - 99.12
    System Memory:  Free - 4.90GB, Wired - 1.15GB, Active - 1.48GB, Inactive - 468.1MB, Used - 3.09GB
I also ran a test on my Mac using www.sppedtest.net, the results are as follows:
    Ping Speed - 1575ms, Download Speed - 0.15Mbps, Upload Speed - 0.04Mbps
I am hoping this provides enough information to direct me on what next to check as my Mac internet performance is still poor.
    Thank you for your time

  • Time Capsule fast backup, SLOW internet!

I hope someone can help me with this issue...it seems like it only just started a few days ago.
So I have a 1TB time capsule and the wireless backup is really fast..like multiple MB/s.
However, the internet surfing speed is really slow. YET, downloading speeds are relatively fast. It just seems like safari, firefox, AND chrome take an abnormally long time loading webpages. Is anyone else having this problem, or am I just crazy?? :/
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks ahead!

Your not alone, there a loads of peaople out there with the same problem. I've got the same problem too. Only recently has this problem manifested itself.
There a few suggested solutions on the internet, most seem to be with adding open DNS addresses in your network config panel. This hasn't resolved my issues. Others suggest adding a linksys router between the modem and Time Capsule...but spending more money on known problem doesn't seem the way to go. Wish I could help...

  • Slow Internet Question

I'll try to be brief but complete.
A few days ago I posted about slow internet and in response it was suggested I go to OpenDNS, which I did, and everything sped up considerably.
I applied OpenDNS via System Prefs>Network>Advanced>DNS.
Now, I'm back to a crawl (almost like the old dial up days).
Here's my set up:4 Mac network via Airport Extreme with an Express to boost range in the house. Both are set to Chanel 3. I have Cox cable high speed.
I did not do anything with OpenDNS to the Airport(s) - out of fear I might mess something up.
All bars on the Airport; interference robustness enabled.
Airport Utility is showing a signal of -80 and noise of -92 on the main Base Station, and a signal of -48 and noise of -94 on the Express extension.
I checked OpenDNS (via their website) and am seeing an IP address in the upper right hand corner of the web page that does not match anything I can find. Don't know if that means anything.
AP Grapher is showing several neighborhood networks but nothing unusual. Under the Airport status in the menu bar, I'm only showing 2 of my neighbors' locked networks. So I don't think I have an interference issue.
Speed is slow in Firefox and Safari. I tried clearing caches, and that did nothing.
With this background, any step by step ideas on how to get my internet speed back, and to keep it? Like I said, for a few days after going to OpenDNS I was like a rocket, and now it's gone back to a medium crawl.
    Most Appreciated & Thanks!

Realize also that cordless phones and microwave ovens interfere with them all.
And don't forget "Baby Monitors". They can be really bad, as some of them use spread spectrium tricks and do not just camp on a single channel. So got any new parents nearby?
1, 6, and 11 do not use frequencies that overlap. I'm not sure if they all follow a sequential pattern in that 2 is clear of 7, 3 is clear of 8, etc.
Each channels uses 5 channels worth of bandwidth. So picking on channel 6 as an example, its signal strength is strongest on Channel 6. It overlaps and is relatively strong on channels 5 and 7. It continues to overlap but will be weaker on channels 4 and 8. Think of the signal as a bell curve with the strongest portion of the curve being centered on channel 6.
Now apply that 5 channel bell curve to any channel you choose, and that channel will be overlapping the adjacent 2 higher and 2 lower channels.
Channel 1 uses frequences below channel 1, plus 2 and 3. Channel 6 uses 4,5,6,7,8 and Channel 11 uses 9,10,11,12,13 (I only mention 12 and 13 because some countries, but not the US, actually allow these 2 channels).
So you can pick channel 2, but if someone is using channel 1, your 5 channel bell curve and channel 1's 5 channel bell curve will overlap a good deal, and unless the neighbor using channel 1 is a good distance away, you will interfere a great deal with each other.
I only recomend usng channels other than 1, 6, and 11 if there are totally saturated, and then it is a game of trying to find the place where a 5 channel bell curve will overlap with the weakest neighboring signals.
