Slow secondary indexes creation

I have a database table where each record is a fixed length of 16 bytes and the key length is 4 bytes.
The table has ~3G records, giving file size of 61GB.
The access method is DB_QUEUE.
I'm using the 5.1.25 version.
I'm trying to create two secondary indexes using DB_HASH as access method.
I set the pagesize to 65K, cachesize to 65M.
When I start to build the indexes I see that the creation time of the indexes will take me something like 3 days which I think is reasonable. But after a day the performances are dropping drastically, giving me approximately creation time of 1 month.
What should I do in order to boost performance on such case?

Hi,
I set the pagesize to 65K, cachesize to 65M.You probably mean 64KB; see the DB->set_pagesize() documentation.
When I start to build the indexes I see that the creation time of the indexes will take me something like 3 days which I think is reasonable. But after a day the performances are dropping drastically, giving me approximately creation time of 1 month. Are you recreating the secondary indexes on a regular basis? If so, what is the reason for this?
Once you open, associate and populate the secondary (using the DB_CREATE flag for the associate() call), you should keep the secondary databases around and not remove them just to recreate them again. Whenever the primary database is updated, the appropriate updates are performed in the secondaries as well to reflect the changes; see Secondary indexes documentation section.
Opening (creating a new database file handle) and populating a secondary database on open are potentially very expensive operations; see the subheading on DB_CREATE in the DB->associate() documentation section.
What should I do in order to boost performance on such case? The best approach would be to not remove and recreate the secondary indexes regularly, but rather create, populate and keep them around as long as the application runs.
If however you need to recreate them again and again, and given that they use the Hash access method, here are some suggestions:
1. If you have a support contract and can access MOS (My Oracle Support) have a look over Doc ID 463613.1 and Doc ID 463507.1 notes in the KM repository (they discuss tuning Hash databases' configuration for speeding up insertion times).
If you cannot access them, let me know and I can make a summary with further guidance.
2. Review the Hash access method specific configuration doc section and try to experiment with appropriately calculated values for the density / page fill factor, hash table size (estimated no of elements that will be stored in the database), and with a hash function that evenly distributes the (secondary) keys across buckets (and eventually with a Hash key comparison function that sorts the keys appropriately respecting their structure/format, data type and size).
3. I assume that this is happening in a transactional environment. If so, it might worth trying to use a transaction handle in the DB->associate() call, which has been opened with the DB_TXN_WRITE_NOSYNC or DB_TXN_NOSYNC flag (see DB_ENV->txn_begin()).
Some general tuning suggestions, that could be used are also given in the following documentation sections: Access method tuning, and Transaction tuning.

  • Slow spatial index creation

    Hi,
I am using v11.2.0.2 and it took 9.5 hours to create a spatial index for 88 million geodetic points. The table itself was created in 15 minutes (with a CTAS from another table with lat/lons) and only has two columns: ULL and GEOM. Does this seem excessive? What can I do to reduce the time to create the spatial index?
    CREATE INDEX POINT_LL_SIDX ON POINT_LL (GEOM) INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEX PARAMETERS('TABLESPACE=ORDERS_IDX WORK_TABLESPACE=ORDERS_03 LAYER_GTYPE=POINT')Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
If you have several CPU cores in your computer, you may try to create your spatial index in parallel,
especially, you can create a partitioned table and create a local spatial index on it in parallel.
BTW, on 11.2.0.2, bug 9588219 may affect index creation performance. Please get a patch for it,
or try your test case on 11.2.0.3.
    Thanks,
    Ying

  • Why index creation is slower on the new server?

    Hi there,
Here is a bit of background/env info:
Existing prod server (physical): Oracle 10gR2 10.2.0.5.8 on ASM
    RAM: 96GB
    CPUs: 8
    RHEL 5.8 64bit
    Database size around 2TB
    New server:
VMWare VM with Oracle 10gR2 10.2.0.5.8 on ASM
    RAM 128GB
    vCPUs: 16
    RHEL 5.8 64bit
Copy of prod DB (from above server) - all init param are the same
I noticed that Index creation is slower on this server. I ran following query:
    SELECT name c1, cnt c2, DECODE (total, 0, 0, ROUND (cnt * 100 / total)) c3
FROM (SELECT name, VALUE cnt, (SUM (VALUE) OVER ()) total
              FROM v$sysstat
             WHERE name LIKE 'workarea exec%')
    C1
    C2
    C3
    workarea executions - optimal
    100427285
    100
    workarea executions - onepass
    2427
    0
    workarea executions - multipass
    0
    0
Following bitmap index takes around 40mins in prod server while it takes around 2Hrs on the VM.
    CREATE BITMAP INDEX MY_IDX ON
    MY_HIST(PROD_YN)  TABLESPACE TS_IDX PCTFREE 10
    STORAGE(INITIAL 12582912 NEXT 12582912 PCTINCREASE 0 ) NOLOGGING
This index is created during a batch-process and the dev team is complaining of slowness of the batch on new server. I have found this one statement responsible for some of the grief. There may be more and I am investigating.
I know that adding "parallel" option may speedup but I want find out why is it slow on the new server.
I tried creating a simple index on a large table and it took 2min in prod and 3.5min on this VM. So I guess index creation is slower on this VM in general. DMLs (select/insert/delete/update) seem to work with better elapsed time.
Any clues what might be causing this slowness in index creation?
    Best regards

I have been told that the SAN in use by the VM has capacity of 10K IOPS. Not sure of this info helps. I don't know more than this about the storage.
What else do I need to find out? Please let me know - I'll check with my Sys Admin and update the thread.
    Best regards

  • ORA-1652: Index creation error

At the time of table re-organisation, Index creation got aborted for the secondary index creation. then we have continued our activity leaving the index creation due to short of System downtime.
Again we have run the sql statment when the sap system is up, then it has thrown an error:
ORA-1652 unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace PSAPTEMP.
In the current system, we are not ready to increase the size of datafile or resizing.where it leads to the increase the size of database.
Here we have option to create a new temp tablespace, will delete after index creation, but while doing this how do we point the new tablespace which is created for this activity.
SAP 4.6c oracle 9 sun solaris.
Kindly advise what can be done. reply ASAP

    Martin,
We have discussed with the team like,
    1. Create new temporary tablespace with desired Size which should be minimum 25GB
                CREATE temporary tablespace PSAPTEMP1......
        2. If the original tablespace is a default temporary tablespace, set the new tablespace as default temporary tablespace in the database.
                 SQL> alter database default temporary tablespace PSAPTEMP1;
        3. Perform the index creation
        4. Make the old tablespace PSAPTEMP as the default temporary tablespace.
SQL> alter database default temporary tablespace PSAPTEMP
       5. Drop the new tablespace.
SQL> drop tablespace temp including contents.
Here I have a question, while switching the default temporary tablespace from PSAPTEMP to the much bigger new PSAPTEMP1Tablespace whether this will affect the running transaction.
Any impact on switching the tablespace online..?
We are performing this activity in the online system(running sap system)
    Thanks,

    Hi All,
I have a table that has more than 6 million records, due to which performance is slow during the transaction search, kindly let me know if Buffering and creation of secondary indexes will help me.
I am given to understand that creation of seconary indexes and full buffering may not always improve performance. Kindly let me know when it is advised to go for full buffering.

  • Creation of secondary index on RSPCPROCESSLOG table

    Hello guys,
We have detected severe performance issues while executing the transaction ST03n in our BW 3.5 System.
Looking in the OSS notes we found the note "SAP Note 841324 - ST03N: poor performance for process chain profile" where it recommends the creation of a secondary index in the table RSPCPROCESSLOG  with the following features:
Create another secondary index on the RSPCPROCESSLOG table with the
    following fields:
    - INSTANCE
    - TYPE
Can you please let us know what is the step by step to proceed with the creation of this secondary index?
    Thanks for your help.

Is it TRUE that in ORACLE 9i version secondary IOT table indexes are

I created secondary index, altered it updating its block references

And it takes about 14 seconds in regular heap-table using the same index
Is it of the same opera that Oracle states: that secondary indexes on IOT table
are similar to regular indexes on performance. but in reality they are significantly slower?
    Does anyone had such situation?
What can be done to speed up access?

    Hi,
You can analyse/debug the query through RSRT in execute+debug mode and please check wether the database optimiser chooses the right index that means wether statistics are updated or not.
You can do a reorganise of indexes as well.
    Thank you,

  • Creation of Secondary Index

    Hi...
    Scenario:
I have loaded BX and BF as per practice. However, i am not getting current stock values for materials which had 0 opening stock when BX was pulled (I did not select checkbox 'Zero stock to be transferred'). Note 823951 suggests executing program 'SAP_REFPOINT_COMPLETE' in such scenario.
    Probelm:
The note suggests creating an index on all dimensions except time. However, the E table for 0IC_C03 is in local package both on development and production system. Hence, am unable to create and transport the index. How do we create secondary index on InfoCube?
Also, when the program is executed in check mode (without creating the suggested index) it ran for almost 7 hrs without any result. Does this program take huge time to complete even in check mode?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anoop Sahu

    Hi,
You can create index from Data Dictionary also.
Goto se11-> choose table radio button -> give your table name -> click on change
this will shows the table fields screen.
In that screen select Create Index button -> Choose the required field.
Every table should maintain a primary index when table was created based on the primary key of that table. if we create new index then it is called secondary index.
usng above procedure u can create secondary index. Just try

  • Three questions about the creation of secondary indexes in ODS design mode

    1. When we right click the Indexes folder in ODS design to select Create to create the Index folder 010, a small window pops up with a check box called "Unique", do we have to check this checkbox to create folder 010?
    2. If we would like to include 3 InfoObjects into the secondary indexes, then how many folders we need to create? Need to create 3 folders like 010, 020, and 030 and place the 3 InfoObj. into the 3 folder respectively or create only one folder 010 and place all the 3 InfoObj. into this one folder 010?
    3. In SAP documentation titled "BW Performance Tuning" about the Indices, it says "If the (uncompressed) F fact table is small, it is usually faster to drop the secondary (bitmap) indices before the load and build them up after the load"
Someone here says secondary index is only for ODS other than for cubes, but from the above statement, F fact table is related to cubes, then how to explain it? Also the above statement is talking above the variant in process chain that when you bring in a variant to load data to cube, then the drop index and generate index variants will be automatically created, does it refer to this? And what's bitmap index?
Thanks in advance and we will continue to give you reward points!

  • Drilling down slow - Something wrong with Secondary Indexes

    Hi,
I have a cube that on the whole works very well, but periodically when I drill down to some characteristics it runs extremely slowly.
The cube is in a our Test environment and is not being updated with data.
When I go to RSA1[Select Cube] Manage>Performance, the DB indexes are now green after reactivating the cube and recreating the indexes.
Yet, when I drill down to certain characteristics, I can see in SM50 the query is doing a sequential read. It looks as if the secondary index on this dimension is not doing its job or being ignored.
I have tried Checking the Cube Database Indexes in RSRV and all is okay. The Master Data in the relevant dimension all seems to be active.
Any suggestions on how to get to the bottom of this would be much appreciated.
A trace on the SQL is showing the following statement taking excessive time:
    Select * from RSDCHABAS where CHABASNM = ? and OBJVERS = ?.
I'm not sure why it's getting stuck on this table and it just list of InfoObjects. It is not reading from the actual cube in this statement.
    Regards
    Adrian

    Hi Adrian,
In BW we are while tranforming data from source system we are using this table to dump the data in table RSDCHABAS. Which is nothing but use as buffer.
Basically this issue is due to low Temporary memory available on the system. Please check Temp memory available in DB02 and send this to your basis team to clear / entend this temp memory.
This will deffinately resolve this error.

  • Systemcopy using R3load - Index creation VERY slow

We exported a BW 7.0 system using R3load (newest tools and SMIGR_CREATE_DDL) and now importing it into the target system.
Source database size is ~ 800 GB.
The export was running a bit more than 20 hours using 16 parallel processes. The import is still running with the last R3load process. Checking the logs I found out that it's creating indexes on various tables:
    (DB) INFO: /BI0/F0TCT_C02~150 created#20100423052851

    (DB) INFO: /BIC/AODS_FA00~010 created#20100423121754
As one can see on the timestamps the creation of one index can take an hour or more.
x_cons is showing constant CrIndex reading in parallel, however, the througput is not more than 1 - 2 MB/sec.  Those index creation processes are running now since over two days (> 48 hours) and since the .TSK files don't mentioned those indexes any more I wonder how many of them are to be created and how long this will take.
The whole import was started at "2010-04-20 12:19:08" (according to import_monitor.log) so running now since more than three days with four parallel processes. Target machine has 4 CPUs and 16 GB RAM (CACHE_SIZE is 10 GB). The machine is idling though with 98 - 99 %.
    I have three questions:
    - why does index creation take such a long time? I'm aware of the fact, that the cache may not be big enough to take all the data but that speed is far from being acceptable. Doing a Unicode migration, even in parallel, will lead to a downtime that may not be acceptable by the business.
    - why are the indexes not created first and then filled with the data? Each savepoint may take longer but I don't think that it will take that long.
    - how to find out which indexes are still to be created and how to estimate the avg. runtime of that?
    Markus

    i Peter,
I would suggest creating an SAP ticket for this, because these kind of problems are quite difficult to analyze.
But let me describe the index creation within MaxDB. If only one index creation process is active, MaxDB can use multiple Server Tasks (one for each Data Volume) to possibly increase the I/O throughput. This means the more Data Volumes you have configured, the faster the parallel index creation process should be. However, this hugely depends on your I/O system being able to handle an increasing amount of read/write requests in parallel. If one index creation process is running using parallel Server tasks, all further indexes to be created at that time can only utilize one single User Task for the I/O.
The R3load import process assumes that the indexes can be created fast, if all necessary base table data is still present in the Data Cache. This mostly applies to small tables up to table sizes that take up a certain amount of the Data Cache. All indexes for these tables are created right after the table has been imported to make use of the fact, that all the needed data for index creation is still in the cache. Many idexes may be created simultaneously here, but only one index at a time can use parallel Server Tasks.
If a table is too large in relation to the total database size, then its indexes are being queued for serial index creation to be started when all tables were imported. The idea is that the needed base table data would likely have been flushed out of the Data Cache already and so there is additional I/O necessary rereading that table for index creation. And this additional I/O would greatly benefit from parallel Server Tasks accessing the Data Volumes. For this reason, the indexes that are to be created at the end are queued and serialized to ensure that only one index creation process is active at a time.
Now you mentioned that the index creation process takes a lot of time. I would suggest (besides opening an OSS ticket) to start the MaxDB tool 'Database Analyzer' with an interval of 60 seconds configured during the whole import. In addition, you should activate the 'time measurement' to get a reading on the I/O times. Plus, ensure that you have many Data Volumes configured and that your I/O system can handle that additional loag. E.g. it would make no sense to have 25 Server Tasks all writing to a single local disk, I would assume that the disk would become a bottle neck...
Hope my reply was not too confusing,

  • Effect of Secondary Index on Performance Tuning

    Hi,
I have a select statement with the below where statement.
    WHERE keyz1 = IT_dfkkzk-keyz1
    AND bldat IN s_pblda
    AND valut IN s_pvalu.
Table from data is accessed Primary key is a combination of two fields KEYZ1 & POSZA.
We have a Secondary Index with OPBEL & KEYZ1.
Will Optimizer will use Secondary Index?
If we change the where statement as given Below
    WHERE keyz1 = IT_dfkkzk-keyz1
    Will the access be fast?
Should i create a secondary index on keyz1 to make it fast?
    Thanks & Reagrds
    Lijo Joseph

    Hi Lijo Joseph,
I think, optimizer will use primary key because "WHERE keyz1" references the first part of this key. Even if you change your WHERE-statement as considered, this will not change optimizer approach.
And yes, this access should be the fastest way to access you data, besides you have more values to reduce the amount of resulting rows. For example if you could specifiy POSZA too, this would accelerate access.
Creation of another secondary index on keyz1 will not make it faster, maybe if you include bldat and valut in this key. But notice, insertion and modification of data will then be slower.
To get optimizer to use existing secondary index you have to specify OPBEL in your where condition like this:
    "where OPBEL = 'X' and KEYZ1 = ....."
