Slow wireless under windows XP bootcamp! help!
Hello everyone,
I bought my first Mac (MacBook Pro) less than a month ago.
I have a problem with my wireless connection under Windows XP (Bootcamp 2.1).
It works, but is painfully slow (500 kbps in download, 100 kbps in upload according to speakeasy test). Instead, wireless works perfectly fine in Leopard (more than 10X faster).
My router is a Netgear WGR613VAL and other Windows computers have no problems with it.
My wired connections are OK. I suppose it is a driver problem?
I have read the forums and I have tried a couple of things, like installing the Broadcom drivers BCMREL_4_100_15_5WHQL and using Tweak Test + Dr TCP, without any improvement.
I'll be grateful for any suggestion.
Which is the best way to contact Apple about this issue? Anyone did it? Would it be useful?
Thanks
You are right in assuming it is a driver problem. Open the Device Manage and Right Click the hardware (network / wireless adapter) to see the date of the driver. Apple's updated drivers should in theory have the latest:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsxp.html
Further bottlenecks to your connection speed would include software firewalls, antivirus, adware or viruses running in the background. I think you have already established the hardware is not an issue. When I had Tiger and BC Beta my Windows connection was slower than OS X. I upgraded to Leopard and the Airport Extreme card kicked in in XP no problem. XP cannot be the issue. Try the WIndows wireless out on any other wireless signals (friends, workplace, library). If it works great elsewhere you might want to work with your Netgear install disk a little or even switch to Airport Express.

Why slow wireless download Macbook Pro Bootcamp Xp Leopard
Problem: wireless download speed is much slower running windows Xp on a macbook pro (bootcamp) than when running OS X. Example OS X = 1,164 KB/sec download, 496 upload vs Xp = 265 KB/sec download, 940 KB/sec upload.
I have a Macbook Pro Duo Core running OS X 10.5 with the newest Boot camp drivers for windows installed. Test was done using Speakeasy speed test, Safari/Explorer 7.
funny how only the download speed is slow under Xp, not the upload speed.
thanks for any help,
PaulHere's a solution that worked for me, my chipset is a Broadcom 802.11n (4328). It's a 24" iMac (Pre Alu).
Hopefully it helps others. Broadcom have updated WHQL drivers (picked mine up from here, they have Vista versions on there too) and it was just a case of installing those and changing 2 settings.
Changing IBSS mode to 802.11a/b/g/n Auto:
http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=configip9.png
Setting the Rate (802.11b/g) to 54:

Now my speed is on par with Leopard -
Slow Superdrive under Windows XP - PIO Only Mode
Hi,
I have a santa rosa macbook pro and have windows xp installed on it with bootcamp. I have noticed that the computer starts stuttering when I install software from a cdrom or dvd. After further investigation, I found that the primary ide channel is only working in PIO mode, making the data transfer process very slow. I have tried changing devicemanager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > Primary IDE Channel > Advanced Settings > Transfer Mode from Pio Only to DMA if available but to no avail. After reboot it stays on PIO Mode. Any ideas?I also have the exact same problem with my Superdrive being stuck in PIO mode. I can't burn CDs or DVDs any faster than about 1MB per second, and the entire PC becomes incredibly slow. I used to be able to utilize DMA access, but no longer.
Please help!
Thank you in advance,

Slow wireless under 10.5.2
Please post here if your wireless speeds degraded after updating to 10.5.2. Apple needs to acknowledge that people are having this issue, and provide an update.
Prior to updating to 10.5.2 and Leopard Graphics Update, my wireless internet was at about 2500 kbps at the CNET bandwidth meter. Now it's between 700 and 1200. I've tried every mentioned fix, except for adjusting the bandwidth on my Airport Extreme base station from 5 to 2.4 ghz (can't do that as somehow in going from Tiger to Leopard, my Airport Utility application vanished, and I have to find the CD to reinstall the Airport Utility, since it can't just be downloaded).
Have tried deleting caches with Cocktail, resetting PRAM/NVRAM, creating a new location, but haven't been able to repair permissions since it takes forever due a Leopard bug which Apple has yet to address (are you listening, Apple?).
If you are having this problem (slow wi-fi on a fully updated Leopard machine), please post so that this issue will be taken seriously by Apple.

Message was edited by: bhmacHave your tried the "Delayed ACK" change suggested by blackjack earlier in this thread? It has been around for a while (since 10.4.6), and some people have found that it helps their network performance. For technical background read: http://www.stuartcheshire.org/papers/NagleDelayedAck/
To see if the hack would help you, first open a terminal window and type:
sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
This changes the network settings for the current boot only. It will automatically be reset when you restart your machine.
If it leads to an improvement in throughput, then you can add it to the startup items. The blog at http://systemsboy.blogspot.com/2006/02/delayed-ack-startup-item-for-intel.html providess a bit of history, and a link to download an installer.
As always, before you do anything to your system (including installation of Apple updates) - backup! I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to get a restorable (bootable) clone of my system. Which means that anything I can do, can be fully undone very easily. -
Cannot Connect To Wireless Through Windows 7 Bootcamp
Hey guys,
To start, I have the retina display Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion, meaning I have no ethernet port or optical drive, so any of those fixes are out of the picture.
I recently installed Windows 7 through bootcamp and I found I had no internet. So I googled it on another computer that was using the same wi-fi and found out that I hadn't installed my mac drivers, simple enough. So installed them through the USB I used during bootcamp.
After installing the drivers, the error of "You have no network drivers" dissappeared and it showed my networks. So I clicked on the network that my OS X connects to, and less than a second after I typed in my credentials and pressed enter, "Windows was unable to connect to (network name)" popped up. So, I clicked "Troubleshoot problems" and it told me that "Troubleshooting coudn't identify the problem."
I thought I'd check random different options, so I typed in random credentials that I'm sure nobody has on this network (User: ahsdeu, Pass: hshah), and I get the same problem. Maybe it's my User/Pass then? No, I use the same credentials on my OS X, and it's working just fine. I used my guest profile to be sure I was logging in to the connection on OS X from scratch. And the internet IS working, I can use Safari just fine.
All nearby wi-fi networks are password protected, so I can't try using one of theirs.
I went to the internet and googled this problem, but the only solution people were giving was install the drivers through CD/USB. But I already did that.
Here's the settings on my Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter:
Device type: Network adapters.
Manufacturer: Broadcom
Location PCI bus 4, device 0, function 0
Device status: This device is working properly.
The driver is up to date (or so it says).
As far as the network settings go, the IP, Subnet and Gateway are all set to auto (I already tried putting in manual information I got from another computer attached to the network, didn't work). It is enabled (tried disabling then renabling).
I turned off firewall, no dice. I've tried re-instaling the setup from my USB with the "repair" option with no success.
One more random note, sometimes instead of giving me the "Windows was unable to connect to..." error, it asks for my credentials again. THEN it tells me the error.
I know it's a lot to read, but I figured I'd try and reduce the amount of questions by being very specific in explaining my problem.
Thank you in advance for any help at all. I hope somebody out there can help me and any future users who encounter this problem.I'm having the exact same problem although I have Windows XP. I submitted an email to iTunes Support, but the auto response I got indicated that I would have to wait up to 48 hours for a response. I'm pretty annoyed by that. I can't believe there isn't a phone number I can call for help. Someone just told me that if I had a protection plan I could call, but as much money as I spend on iTunes already........

WRT54GX2 slow wireless 5.5 mbps speed help please
So I just received my WRT54GX2 and got it hooked up. Here are some details of my equipment which are all experiencing the same issue while connected via wireless.
1 Dell Inspiron wireless G. (updated latest driver)
1 Toshiba laptop wireless G (not sure on driver yet)
1 custom tower with wireless G (updated latest driver)
WRT54GX2 ver 2 with firm ware 1.00.08 (just updated)
Comcast 6 Meg cable internet service with Motorolla cable modem
Here is the problem I am experiencing.
After configuring the WPA2/TKIP settings and getting everybody logged on, the wireless connectivity speed (reported via the windows XP wireless utility) indicates connection speeds of 5.5 Mbs. If I disable the adapter and re-enable it, it connects and is at 54 Mbps for about 1 second, then rapidly drops down to the 5.5 which is where it stays. This problem is replicated on all 3 PC's on the wireless. I have tried adjusting the beacon interval down to 50, even went down to 10 with no result. I changed the RTS threshhold to 2304. Tried setting the transmission rate from auto to 54 Mbps. I tried adjusting the RWIN settings on my PC as suggested in another post here where somebody was experiencing a similar problem. I have installed the Microsoft WPA2 patch (893357) and that made no difference either. I have switched to G only instead of mixed mode. Tried channels 1, 11, 7, 6, and probably most of the others. Moved the router around to different locations in the room. Even sitting within arms reach of it, I still only see the 5.5 Mbps (I have full signal strength BTW). I ran netstumbler and found very few wireless networks within range. And the ones that were had very weak signals. Short of unplugging my cordless phone, I am at a loss of things to try. I may reset the router and try a new config from scratch, but if there is any help on this subject it would be greatly appreciated.
ThanksAfter a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for all your wireless cards. Note that often the speed of your wireless network is determined by the "weakest link" in your system. You might want to try to isolate the problem by turning on each wireless computer separately, then two at a time. You might be able to tell which computer is bringing down your wireless speed.
If you still have trouble, try the following.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Hope this helps.

Slow wireless on Westell 9100em - Please help
I had Fios installed 6 months ago and have used it on wire since day one. No performance problems at all. Recently I had occasion to connect my laptop via wireless and ran into severe performance issues. Pages were very slow to load, or just time out. I tried two other laptops ( different makes & wireless cards) and all had identical issues. Pinging from the laptop to the 9100em, I'm seeing packet loss as high as 60%. Same results pinging from the 9100em to the private address of the laptop. I loaded up NetStumbler to see what was going on. I was the only one on the channel (11), and the signal to noise ratio was excellent. I also tried switching back to WEP from WPA to see if that made any difference, but it did not. For the heck of it, I tried channel six, but got the same poor results. At this point I figured I had a bad router and called Fios support. After the 50 questions and answers about configuration, microwaves, cordless phones and distances, they sent me a new router.
I fired up the new router, but my problems remain the same. Both the old and new Westells are running the most current version of firmware. I'm not sure where to go next and I could really use some help. Thanks in advance.
Solved!
Go to Solution. It might be a TCP/IP issue rather than a data quality issue. Are you using DHCP? If something else on your network is using the same address as your laptop(s), you might get these dropped packets. You could try assigning a static IP to one of your laptops to see if it helps.

Wake On Wireless under Windows 7
Has anyone been able to get a Mac to wake on wireless while booted into Windows 7? I have a Unibody Macbook (Late 2008) and was trying to get this to work, but the option to "Allow this device to wake the computer" on the WLAN card settings is grayed out.
It appears that this machine supports the same functionality under Snow Leopard, though I haven't tested it out yet.

Error 2048 under Windows 7 64bit when opening DNxHD .mov
Hi people,
i'm experiencing a weird problem while trying to open a DNxHD encoded .mov file with quicktimeplayer under windows 7 64 bit.
getting the error 2048: "Couldn't open the file because it's not a file that QuickTime understands."
filesize is 5,6 GB and im running Quicktime 7.7.5, the file was encoded using avid media composer.
Other (smaller, around 2GB) files from the same source and using the same codec will play back fine!
This file is running fine on my macbook (10.8.5), but will fail to play under windows 7 bootcamp or on my PC.
I've read about filesize-limits around 4 GB, is there some truth to that?
thanks for your help
EDIT: i need to be able to play back the file with quicktime-components (not vlc or something like that) because im working with protools, which is using quicktime for video-playback.Thanks for your reply nyc.
But the code i copied is in fact an extract of the USBDescriptors.c present in this directory.
If I try to execute this example, the result is the same. -
MacBook Pro 1,1 will not wake up under Windows XP
I have an "old" macbook pro 1,1 (one of the first Intels) with ATI Radeon X1600 128MB and I am having trouble with it waking from sleep under Windows XP bootcamp.
This is a similar problem as in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2306325&tstart=1
I have seen that there is a similar problem with iMacs which may have been solved by updating the EFI firmware to 1.4
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3561
"Update addresses issues where iMac computers with ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics intermittently stop responding and addresses wake-from-sleep issues in Boot Camp"
The problem is that my macbook pro is version 1,1 and the latest EFI firmware for updating is 1.2. as seen here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
1. Can I install a firmware which is higher than 1.2 with my mac?
2. Is there anything else I can do to solve this problem?
3. Would updating the ATI Radeon x1600 graphics drivers help?
Please Help!Hey there,
i know it is an old Thread but i had the same Problem a few Moments ago. Don't know if it helps everyone but i just moved the 3 .AEX files from the Pluginfolder to another Place. This solves the Start-Up Problem. Rename is not an Option because Premiere finds the renamed files. But if you move them in another Folder Premiere 1.5 starts (compatibility set to XP SP2)
BUT: I dont know which effects this will cause inside the Program. I just wanted to export an existing Project again. Start-up, loading the Projectfile and loading the original clips and pictures works. So far the export seems to work too.
regards

Will the dynamic graphic chip switch work under windows?
Will that new function of the newest MacBook Pro work under Windows, using Bootcamp?
Lodewijk Hartong wrote:
So if I install the new bootcamp drivers it should?
I don't know. If Apple put the capability into the video driver it will. If they did not put the capability into the video driver it won't.
You will probably get better information if you ask the question in the bootcamp forum. I stopped using bootcamp at least 2 years ago. -
How can I get a better driver for my 1394b Hostcontroller in my Macbook pro 2010 to solve the problem, that it is too slow under Windows 7 installed with bootcamp ?
WIndows can't find a better one than the installed LSI Conformed 1394 HostcontrollerRead and follow the Bootcamp Installation instructions that you were offered to view when you ran Bootcamp Assistant.
Run Bootcamp Assistant again and select the option to download the Bootcamp Support software. Follow the instructions. Then boot into Windows and install the Windows Support software you downloaded and saved.
