Small simple lowend-(web/mail/db)-server for misc. stuff

Hi!
Can anyone recommend me a general direction in which to go for a small (virtual) server? I'm pretty confused with all the different possibilities and have a hard time choosing what's right for me...
- mail: 3 to 10 email users
-- with 1 or 2 email accounts each
--- and those with 1 to 5 aliases each
- web: 4 to 20 websites & domains
-- only simple CMS or access by me (ssh), no other users that p.e. know what "ftp" is.
-- low traffic, mostly static, not many updates, no high security etc. needed
- database
-- one used only by a phpbb
-- another one for random stuff, accessed only by me
I've spent the last two days getting rid of strange web admin interfaces and cleaning up the preinstalled modified debian... and now that all the strange stuff that messes around behind my back is gone, I'd like something simple.
- I think I'll go with apache, as that's the only webserver I have used regularly. But I'm open for alternatives, if those are really better for something that small.
- I've got no idea how to do the emails. I want access via pop3, smtp & webinterface... a few accounts, a few aliasses, and I want to change as few configs & install as few programs as possible. Most people seem to use a lot of interacting... things... even if there's only one or two email users and I've got a hard time finding a simple example setup. I'm not that familiar with the mail stuff and don't even know the program names to go with and do my research, if I really want something simple/basic. Postfix & courier? I remember that dovecot thing, I think it had just too many features for me and looked very chaotic, but then again, that was quite a while ago. So what would you use?
- Some small cms... single user: gallery, blog, guesbook (or comments), not too many features, no community, easy for the news-posting enduser (like "put the right shape in the right hole"-easy) BUT simple (like not a thousand different features I don't need) in the background where I do my layout / code customizations.
I'm reading and trying around a lot at the moment, but there's just too much information to be found on unnecessarily more complicated setups... too many choooices!!! Well - so, someone try to kick me some steps into the right direction pls! Or any direction... *g*
Thanks!

Please don't make your Linux server an easy target for abuse otherwise it's just going to join the army of Windows botnets around the web.
FWIW, I use Postfix with courier-imap, which does pop and imap. cyrus-sasl takes care of SMTP auth. I us a PostgreSQL database for everything.

iPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email.  "The email server didn't recognise username/password combination".  Both appear correct in preferences/accounts.  Mail sends and receives messages perfectly.
(This problem also occurs when trying to send from Thunderbird, however both iPhoto and Thunderbird can send perfectly well using the Gmail server).

    Hi there
I should explain that I have 5 days experience of the iMac but have had a working iCloud account with my iPad for several months.  I don't think this is an iCloud issue as such. My thought is that this is something to do with the Mail application itself and its relationship to my Apple ID etc. (Perhaps when the iMac first configured itself?)
I have deleted and manually reset both Mail and iPhone account settings for iCloud using the Apple recommended settings and I have tentatively checked that the username/password combination is as expected in Keychain but I'm too much of an Apple novice to go any further with that.
On a PC I think I would try reinstalling the Mail programme but I don't see that as an option.

  • IIS Web Farm - File Server for Content and Shared Configuration - SOFS?

We currently have a number of web farms with their content and shared configuration files located on a standalone file server.

SoFS is a good choice for a) Hyper-V and b) SQL Server (anything working with a big files like VHDX and MDF). For a bunch of a small files IIS has in a shared directories SoFS is not going to work and it's cleary said in the documentation. See:
Scale-Out File Server for Application Data Overview

    Workload: Information worker
    Yes
    Not recommended
    Workload: Hyper-V
    Yes
    Yes
    Workload: Microsoft SQL Server

So in your case just an ordinary clustered file servers should be enough. See:

    Hope this helped :)

We cannot get the Lync 2013 Web Scheduler to send email invites to anyone even after configuring the SMTP server for both the external and internal sites on our one and only front-end (we did the super simple same box install for testing

  • Using BT Mail smtp server for non-bt account

Having recently discovered the hard way that I was migrated (and had no BT e-mail for 3 days), I have now discovered that all the authorisations I had set up for sending of e-mail fwith the senders address being a non-bt account have gone.
The help files point me in the direction of setting up BT Mail to get non-bt mail for me. This is not what I want. All I need is to authorize andrew@******.org.uk as an authorised user on my BT account. Thunderbird is quite capable of getting the mail from mail.****.org.uk with POP3. I just need to be able to use the BT smtp server for outgoing mail only.
    Help Please

Appears to be working again with andrew@******.org.uk
I guess it was just a glitch.

  • How to set up mac mail to keep mail on server for 1 year

    Hello;
i use mac mail and want to keep the mail on the mail server longer than 1 month, i would liketo keep it for 1 year.
Is there something i can configure this, instead of the options 1 day, 1 week, 1 month? 1 month is too short.
Keeping it forever is also not good.
An alternative would be to keep it 'forever' and then use the 'webmail' interface to remove mails older than 1 year
but his is too much work.
    best regards

POP accounts will only give you control to server settings at the inbox. If you never remove it from the server, it will download all messages when you log into your account from another computer. This could be a problem with thousands of messages left on a server.
For IMAP, your inbox will atuomatically sync to the IMAP inbox, so what you do in Mail or Webmail will reflect the change at the other.
For the other mailboxes, storing messages on the server in Mail settings basically syncs the IMAP and local mailboxes like the inbox does. So, if you trash a sent message in Mail, it will trash it at the IMAP site.
If they are left in those mailboxes, then the server setting in Mail will control how long the remain in those mailboxes unless you move them or delete them manually.
If not set to store on the server, the local mailbox will not sync with the IMAP. So, deleting a sent message from the local sent mailbox will not delete the sent message in the IMAP sent mailbox.
Some accounts like GMail have settings at their site that will let you further control how mail is handled.
You can make settings to archive messages automatically when deleted from the inbox or sent folder. I believe that is the default setting in GMail. That would be what you want to save all your mail.  That would keep your inbox and sent mailboxes clean. Look at your IMAP site to see what settings you can make there.
In GMail, the "all mail" is just a reflection of all messages kept and archived. You have no settings control of this mailbox on your mac in Mail. But, you can view the "all mail" under the IMAP folder in Mail.
You can still set up a smart mailbox on your mac in mail to show the messages in the "all mail" mailbox that are greater than a year old. Only those would show up in that smart mailbox and you can just select all and delete without having to visually look at all the messages in the IMAP "all mail".

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Help me Decide on OpenBSD or Solaris as my web and file server please

    Hi
    5 questions
i have been using OpenBSD as my Web and file server for a while now
    and FreeBSD as my Desktop
i decided on OpenBSD as my Server because of its Security
    1) But now i hear Solaris is the most Secure OS pn the Planet? is this true
    And which is real Unix?
i seem to always have trouble with things such as PHP on OpenBSD
Most of my pages run as *.html but i also have a forum which uses PHP 4
But all my PHP pages come up blank..
i am always encountering errors using PHP
    2) If i Switch to Solaris will it b even harder to use or
is it precompiled with PHP 4 and higher when i install Apache
    3) Also what about cgi and the ability to use *.htaccess files should i use them
    4) Also i i still would like to generate SSH keys ssh-keygen
is that possible?Forcing the user to login using only a key and
    not a password on SSH
    5) Does Solaris have any Linux compatibility as well?as FreeBSD has
Concider me a newbie even though i use to post on this forum once before
i am always experimenting trying new things out

Either will work just fine. Since you're asking in the Sun forums, you should receive more Solaris replies of course! :-)
The weak point in your setup (as far as security goes) would be the use of PHP either way...

  • Can I set my iCloud email as the outgoing mail server for my google apps email account in Mac Mail?

I have a google apps email account from an old client, all my work emails have been going to it for years. As I'm no longer affiliated with this client I'd like to make a transition to using my iCloud account for work. I asked people to use my iCloud address but as they've been using my google apps address for years it's what automatically comes up when they type my name.
I figure the easiest way to make a transition is if I reply to all the emails that arrive at my old address from my iCloud address and gradually they will start using my new address without realising it. But I can't find a simple way to do this.
In Mac Mail preferences > accounts > Google IMAP (my old account name) > Account information > Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) I'd like to set my iCloud SMTP server. But although my iCloud account uses its own outgoing mail server for its own account , it is not in the server list when I select my google account. I've tried to add it to the server list as smtp.mail.me.com but it caused my whole iCloud account to give me error messages until I force quit Mail...
    Any ideas?

In iCloud/Mail, have you tried going to Preferences (select with gear at lower left)/Composing and setting a Send from address there?

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

  • Simple Java Web Server

I am looking for a simple Java Web Server similar to the one Sun used to have. My understanding is that they stopped supporting that server. My background for this need is a classroom setting that teaches servlets and JSP, but does not want to specify a tool for deployment. With the old JavaWebServer it was just a matter of copying a Servlet or JSP to a directory. That is what I am looking for in this case.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know.
    Thanks

Try http://www.apache.org Jakarta-Tomcat will work fine.

Yahoo and Gmail support should be able to help you.
Not related to Firefox support, web mail doesn't use POP or SMTP protocols which is what email clients such as Thunderbird use for communicating with email servers.
