Smallest File Type (available on iTunes)

I was just wondering what is the smallest file type that is available on iTunes?
Thanks for all your help!!!

I use 32kbps sometimes for audiobooks. It's fine, if you use mono.
But yes, "smallest file type" doesn't make any sense. All audio file types produce equal sizes, if they are at the same bitrates.

  • What is the full name of the audio file type used in iTunes 10.3.1.  Are they MP3 files?

Is this a file type that came into being BEFORE OR AFTER MP3?   Are these MPEG audio file layer 1 or layer 2?  Just curious.....

  • Music files not available on iTunes Match

Recently purchased a 1 year-subscription to iTunes Match and uploaded my entire iTunes library: 145GB - 11000 files, mainly music files and some podcasts, right.
However, I'm very surprised to find out that plenty of my music files have NOT been uploaded to the cloud (icone with a strike on the cloud).
    Could somebody tell me why?
The concerned files were mainly ripped by iTunes from my OWN CDs and are readily availabe for sale (pay download) on many online music shops and on iTunes Store also.
Please, find below only some examples:
amy winehouse - back to back
andrew bird - andrew bird and the mysterious production of eggs
    brad mehldau - largo
    chateau flight - puzzle
death in vegas - satan's circus
    gary moore - after hours
    grateful dead - american beauty
    and so forth....
Is there a way I could get those missing files to upload to the cloud?

The "get info", cmd-i, on the file while on the cloud displayed 256 kbps and displayed also "matched".
Another thing about the whole thing I didn't know: now that i've downloaded the mentioned file and deleted it from the MBA without deleting it from the cloud, well, there seems to be no way back!
    I mean:
    - icloud status column says: "downloaded" (although it's NOT on the MBA anymore), which is kinda misleading.
    - icloud icon: cloud with download arrow, which means (probably...) that the file can be downloaded again
    - get info (supposedly info about the icloud version of the file...) says now: 160 kbps.
Note: i shut down iTunes and opened it again to make sure the display got refreshed since i don't know where the iTunes "refresh" command is.
All that to say that I'm not sure that iCloud allows us to download an original 160 kbps file to a 256 kbps, which seems in fact too good to be true. But who knows...

  • Smallest music type

I have a 2GB ipod nano (second generation), which is supposed to hold up to 500 songs. I figure I should be able to fit at least 300, because I have a few songs that are longer than 4 minutes, but it is full after 200. I took all my files off and lyrics but that didn't help. I was wondering if maybe the file type of music taken off my CD's were larger than songs gotten from other sources. Could someone tell me what the smallest file type is, and how to convert my songs into that format?
ipod nano 2nd generation   Windows XP

It all depends on the bit rate at which you ripped the CDs. You can determine this by displaying the bit rate in one of the columns in your iTunes window.
Select View>View Options and check the "Bit Rate" box.
If your songs are on average about 4 minutes long, and the bit rate is higher than 128kbps, then you probably won't be able to fit 500 songs on the nano.
The higher the bit rate, the more space each song file takes up.

  • Why does CC have less file types than CS6?

I have both DW CS6 and CC installed on my system.  Can anyone tell me why CS6 has more file types available from the "file/new" menu than CC has?  For example, CS6 has 18 "HTML" types, yet CC has only 2.  Also, CS6 has a "get more content" link on the dialog, whereas CC does not.
Is there any way to get CC to have all of those file types available, or do I need to create the file in CS6 and then switch to CC for the rest of my work?

If you want those starter files in Dreamweaver CC, it's very easy to copy them across. Go to the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS6\configuration\BuiltIn\Layouts (Windows)
    /Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/configuration/BuiltIn/Layouts (Mac)
Copy all the files except the first four, which begin with HTML5_
Paste them into the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CC\configuration\BuiltIn\Layouts (Windows)
    /Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CC/configuration/BuiltIn/Layouts (Mac)
You will need Administrator permission to do this.
Once you have copied them, you will find them in your New Document dialog box. The names won't be fully spelled out, but they should be recognizable.

  • Ai output file types:  standalone vs. in CC

During my free trial, I noticed that standalone Ai had certain output file types, but once I downloaded Photoshop, additional file types were now available in Ai.  I am trying to decide if I need just Ai, or the entire cloud. Please specify output file types available for Illustrator in each instance.

  • Nano3rdgen Copying playlist from itunes to ipod and it says it can't copy certain songs to ipod cos of file type. These problem songs all from same album, all ACC file type and all copied fine when I copied the album itself few weeks ago-help!

When copying playlist from itunes to nano3rd message comes saying 9 of songs can't be copied to ipod cos of file type. These 9 are all from same album, all ACC and all copied fine when I copied the album itselm some weeks ago.  Rest of playlist was ACC too.  P.S. album is a CD-R copied version-is this an issue? HELP I AM DESPAIRING!

I never laughed in all my life. Here I was, inserting the cd Dance with Me, thinking it's not going to copy the whole thing. yeah, right.
Sure, it prompted me, Do I want to replace the songs, so of course I said "no, don't replace the songs". and guess what it did. It copied the whole cd (at least I got my two songs).
I went into the itunes library, and sure enough, all the songs were there twice. So what did my intelligent brain think of? I just unchecked the doubled songs and stuck my ipod into my computer and it synched up and I got what I wanted.
Now what did I do wrong when it prompted me. I clicked on "don't replace" and it replaced them anyway.
Am I dumb? or is itunes stupid?
    thanks, Melody

  • CD albums in iTunes (12.1.2.27) won't load to iPad - gets file type not supported message

I just updated to iTunes 12.1.2.27 and synced to my iPad, but all of my CD albums that are in iTunes on a mac-mini (Yosemite 10.10.3)  won't sync now. A sample message is:
"song title" was not copied because the file type is not supported by the iPad "my iPad name"
There where a hundred songs on the list. My iPad is on IOS 8.3. I have never had this problem before. Songs purchased from iTunes store are there, but not my own CDs.
Has anyone seen this problem before? What is the solution?
    Rolf

Problem solved! Apparently way back in November of last year I made a copy of the iTunes library on my time machine backup disk manually. I just created the folder on the drive. This was because I was updating the system and did not trust anything to work properly afterwards. The iTunes folder was sitting on that drive and  iTunes (for reasons I don't understand) started using parts of it. I noticed this when I tried to play one of the songs from my CD albums. The backup disk would mount and spin up and play the song from there.
By the way the iTunes preferences were set to look at the iTunes library on my mac-mini system disk not the backup drive. Why it went to that backup drive I will never know. Anyway I renamed the iTunes folder to something else on the backup drive. Now when I play a song from an album it goes to the proper iTunes library (the one on my mac-mini disk). Subsequent to this fix a sync to the iPad copied my albums  properly with no error.

  • Some iTunes library files showing as an unknown file type - different files from same import...

Haven't been able to find a similar problem on here, but apologies if this is a repetition of another discussion.
Some of the files in my Itunes library popped up with the little exclamation mark next to them, so I attempted to locate them. It's been a patchy problem since transferring from PC to Mac, but has just been an issue of pointing Itunes to the right file.
However, in this instance when I navigate through to the files in the folder they aren't showing as the same file type as the music that is playing in the library - I just get a blank page icon.
What's confusing me is that these aren't different file types or from different sources. They're maybe 3 tracks out of a whole album that is playing fine, that were all ripped from the same CD at the same time.
I've no idea why the Itunes is seeing some of these files differently. Any ideas?

Looked at in the HD they're all showing as M4P. I'm sure it's the way the software is viewing the files, and not the files themselves. Itunes does offer to find the others, but then does a really crappy job of doing so - missing files in the same album in the same folder.
I've cracked the original file problem by pointing Itunes to the files by going through the MacHD route, so now I'm just wrestling with thousands of missing files that I know are sitting right next to the files that aren't missing!
I might just resign myself to ploughing through and fixing it, sorting the patchy artwork at the same time. If I do a purge at the same time I can convince myself that I'm not wasting my life!

  • I want to edit the application associated with pdf files, but the pdf file type is not available on the Applications tab under edit preferences. How do I add file types?

I am running Firefox 5.0 (Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0) under Kubuntu 11.04.

Thanks jscher2000, I tried your suggestion, but no joy (as expected). None of the extensions were .bin, and in fact, I can't find a single listing for handling the .bin extension in the entire (unfiltered) list.
That's why I'm so confused. Where is Firefox getting the name "VLC.bin (default)" from in the first place?
cor-el, I checked out the link that you posted.
I don't have an entry for "browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes" and the entry "plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types" was empty (default setting).
My bad, but I forgot to mention in my first post that I had also tried renaming the mimetypes.rdf file in my "Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxx.default\" to .old to no avail.
Firefox created a new, almost empty file, but it didn't change the behavior for .bin files. I removed the new file and put the old file back in place after determining that clearing the file did not help, since I am otherwise happy with my current file-type options.
However, since the option to "Always perform this action" is grayed-out, I am looking into the possibility that the website is sending a misconfigured MIME type or is assigning "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the download. What's odd, though, is that I've never had problems getting binary files from the site in the past, and the problem started when the VLC player was installed.
I'll post back after I check into the server header data.

  • Best Video File Type For iTunes and Xbox360

I have an extensive digital library and I am trying to have one file for all devices.
What I am looking to do is to have one file that can be managed by iTunes, play on my iPhone and stream to my xbox360 via Connect360 and look good. File size is not a concern. I dont want to do multiple encodes.
The important features are one file playable by iPhone and Xbox360 via Connect360 that can be managed by iTunes. I would like the video to be of very high visual / audio quality.
I use handbrake to convert video files.
My question is, what is the best file type for this scenario? I have used mv4 but more recently I am using MP4 with 264...
Again, one file to rule them all....
    Thank you in advance!

Old thread for others, but,,... It isnt necessary to convert a bunch of files, if you have Plex on your pc, and on your iphone/ipad.
I would have spent a month converting the terra bytes of all the video files that I had but i just airplay and my Plex app to send nearly any type of file on my Imac directly to my Apple tv.
It converts on the fly any file that isnt supported.

  • ITunes updates hijacking file types?

I would like for my .m4v files to play in quicktime when I open them in Finder. I can get them to do this using the "Open with: .. Change All..." option in the get info window for a .m4v file.
The problem is that every time iTunes updates it takes over the .m4v files. I like that Apple keeps iTunes up to date (8+ updates per year for the past 3 years according to wikipedia). However I wish I didn't have to run around after them reminding Finder over and over that I want .m4v to open in quicktime.
How can I convince iTunes or the iTunes updates to quit playing tug of war with my file type preferences in Finder?

I haven't upgraded in a long time so I don't have first hand experience with what you are observing. When you install a program it tells the Mac what kind of files it can open. Apparently this is overriding what you have done previously to tell the Mac that you don't want iTunes to open certain files, you want Quicktime. I haven't heard of any way of stopping this from happening or altering the records, certainly nothing easier than just changing the "open all" setting on a file again.

  • "Play iTunes LP" -- "not a supported file type....." etc

When I click "Play iTunes LP" it opens Adobe Reader and gives me this error message:
"Adobe Reader could not open 'Digital Booklet.pdf" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
I have tried deleting the file and redownloading from the icloud but I am still getting the same error message. I have never spotted this LP button before tonight. I can't find anyone else who has had this problem.

    Looks like memory served mostly...
Check in Windows Explorer that the .itlp file type is associated with iTunes and check using Get Info in iTunes that the iTunes LP entry is connected to the folder.
It is the index.html file that actually holds the important information that governs how the iTunes LP or Extras object behaves when opened by iTunes. It doesn't work properly when opened locally in a browser.

  • ITunes says nano can't play file type

After updating to 1.1.3 for my nano 8GB, there are 101 songs that iTunes refuses to sync to the nano, saying:
Some of the items in the iTunes library, including "Great Escape", were not copied to the iPod "My iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod.
When I use the disclosure triangle to see details, all 101 songs give the same info, for example:
"Multiply" was not copied because the file type is not supported by the iPod "My iPod".
But these are all just MP3 files. Some, if not all, of them were purchased in the iTunes store, then burned to a standard CD (aiff?), then later reloaded. They've all been played before on this iPod. I still have the original protected song files filed away, and I could pull them out, but I shouldn't have to do that. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks.

PowerPC G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Nano 8GB Red

Was there some reason you wanted to change the format of the songs? I've seen this problem before and I can't remember what (if any) solution there was other than to use the original AAC files.
Remember, by burning the original files to a cd then re-importing to an mp3 file, you have compressed an already compressed file even further and so compromised the sound quality.
I know you should be able to use mp3 files but is there some reason you don't want to use the original AAC file?
