Smart Previews. Can't eject HD whilst using LR. Upon re-opening without HD, can't locate catalog..

So, I’ve got my external HD plugged in. I’ve selected the photos I want and I’ve 'Built Smart Previews'. It’s done that, fab.
Then - keeping Lightroom open, I go to Finder and click eject on the external HD. Except it won’t let me eject because ‘Lightroom is using it’.
So, instead I quit Lightroom, eject the HD, and then re-open Lightroom, but it can’t find the catalogue file, so asks me to locate it. Do I need to copy the catalogue file to the Desktop too? That seems oddly hands-on…?
(PS - I create a new catalogue for each wedding I shoot, and those catalogues are kept on the external HD). That's how I've worked until now.
Do I need to keep those catalogues on the laptop's HD instead?
I'm using a rMBP, OS Mavericks, LR5.3

Yes, if you want to take the EHD offline. How else could it work?
Also, as well as copying the catalogs you'll also have to include the previews as well (both library preview cache and the smart previews cache).

The iPhone requires wi-fi to update if you try to update over the air, since the phone needs to reboot, thus disconnecting itself. You can update via iTunes and the computer, but you would not be able to tether to the phone for the internet connection, since the phone would disconnect. So, you can either update via wi-fi and the phone, or you can update with a computer that has an internet connection other than the phone.

I just launched IDLE for Python 2.7.2 on Mac OS X 10.8.4.
The defaults for IDLE assume a PC environment and not Mac, thus it was expecting control+c, control+v for copy and paste. Under the IDLE Options menu, Configure IDLE...
Under the Keys tab, Use a built-in key set, select IDLE Classic Mac. Now command+c, command+v work.
Since I didn't want to squint, I set my Font to Ubuntu Mono 14 pt.
I applied these settings and clicked ok.
I successfully copied from a terminal window and pasted into IDLE with no issue.

Can Typekit web fonts be used to produce digital publishing documents or can only desktop fonts be used?

I'm trying to match a DPS publication to a website that uses a web only Typekit font. Is there a way to make it work for a DPS publication or can only desktop fonts be used? Thank you for any insight.

Thanks for your interest in Typekit! Only the fonts licensed for sync use may be used to create digital documents. We are continuing to license fonts from our foundry partners for desktop sync as we move forward, but in the meantime you can likely purchase a desktop license directly from the foundry for any weight or style which is not available for sync. The foundry name & website are linked from the top of each Typekit font detail page.

I can't eject ("files in use by another application") Windows/Vista Issue?

OK... so in the grand scheme of things, this really is NOT the end of the world... but it sure is super-annoying!! This is my first every Apple product (took a while to get on the bandwagon) and I was hoping for more stability and ease of use... I've called AppleCare several times and they can't help me figure this out... according to them it's a Windows/Vista issue (which DOES seem likely). I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Dimension E521.
Here's how it goes... I plug my iPod in, which opens up iTunes and it syncs fine. I wait until the top of iTunes says "sync complete" and the face of the iPod simply says "Connected". Then I click on the "eject" button next to the iPod listing in iTunes. It pauses for a moment, then I look down and the iPod suddenly has those syncing, circular arrows, moving again and it says "Synchronizing- do not disconnect". And then a few moments later, iTunes gives me a pop-up that says " XXXX ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application"
So obviously, something else is connecting to the iPod and preventing me from ejecting it using iTunes, but I have not been able to figure out what it is!
Since it's something on my machine, I have tried the following:
- shut down AntiVirus (TrendMicro Internet Security 2008)
- turned off Windows Firewall
- went through all the programs running in the task bar and turned them off
- opened up Task Manager and turned EVERYTHING else I could see off
None of the above have made any difference. The workaround that Apple gave me was to go into Computer and then right click on the listed drive and select "Safely Remove" which usually works (the times it doesn't work, it gives a similar message saying the device was being used by another application and can't be removed, try again later). But 90% of the time it works.
I use that or the Eject option when I right click on that drive (not sure the difference, they seem to do the same thing). The workaround works, but I'd sure LOVE to get iTunes to be able to eject my iPod!!
Here's what I've done regarding this iPod and iTunes:
- reset the iPod
- restored the iPod
- uninstalled and re-installed iTunes
- selected and unselected the various things I'm syncing (currently: Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Photos) to see if it was one of them causing the issue
NONE of the above has made any difference (and I've done each about 2-3 times, ZERO exaggeration).
I've called into AppleCare about half a dozen times now, hoping to get that one brilliant tech that knows more than the others... but no luck yet... so I thought I'd try this forum to see if one of the brilliant posters here can help me sort this out.
PLEASE- ANY help you can provide (or even just point me in the "right" direction of how to determine this) would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

Problems with my downloading app on my iPod touch 4 like when it's downloading I can't pause like I used to be able to and I can't delete it while its downloading ever since I downloaded IOS 6 I have been having problem like these

I also can't tilt on certain apps like I'm able to do so like before I downloaded iOS 6 you know when on certain apps you can tilt your iPod and the screen is going to follow your iPod right. Well I can't do that anymore and it is considerably a lot slower than before and don't tell me it's my iPod that's slower when I had iOS 5 it used to be able to do all this. Somebody got to fix this.

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that points to a hardware problem. Yu can make an appointment at the the Genius Bar of an Apple store or try:

Can 1st gen AppleTV be used as a music source without a computer or intenet

I'd like to be able to use my apple tv as a music source at work and I originally thought I could use my iPhone to control it. I now realize it needs to be hooked into a wifi network. Can one connect the Apple TV to a router and set up a "hot spot" without being on the net and without a computer?

Yes you can. I'm using my first gen Apple TV as a music source in my home. You do need a wifi network to control it with your iPhone or iPad Remote app. It's better than the new Apple TV in that regard because you can play your music without having your computer up and running iTunes.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:

Why doesn't Firefox close even when I close it. When I try to open it again I get a "Firefox is running, please close before reopening...or something like that", but I can't close it and it's not really open where I can see it.

One situation in which Command+w or Ctrl+w might not work is if the "focus" is in a plugin such as the Flash player used on Youtube after you interact with the player controls. Firefox will continue to send the keyboard input to the plugin until you move the focus back to the page. Does that account for any of the problem?

Can I use my lrdata smart previews file on another Mac and then take the edits back to the original?

LR5 CC user. I have tried to use Smart Previews for the first time. I followed what seemed the best advice but now not sure since most of the guides feature working with a single computer and offline files. I am away travelling for over a month. I have a Mac Pro with many thousands of images. I exported my 5000 "best" as smart previews in a lrdata file to use with my macbook pro laptop while travelling. i took the lrdata file with me on a hard drive. Not the catalog file. Now it seems I can import these files (by double clicking on the lrdata file) but I am concerned that if I edit them the editing will be lost when I go back to the original. They have different file names. Have I basically lost the chance to do any editing? Or is there a way to edit and then send them back to the original catalog?

One should not import & edit smart preview files (the lossy dngs with names like 7/7FB5/7FB580F4-00BB-4C39-8DE5-C09490BA6CB8.dng), instead of the photos they "represent".
But if you do, here's how to transfer settings and/or metadata from imported/edited smart preview files back to the original photos which you should've edited in the first place:
o Note: you have to import the directly-edited smart previews into your main catalog when you get home (import from travel catalog, or save xmp first and just import files - either way works).
* Download and install RelativeAntics plugin (free by me).
* Choose 'Imported Smart Previews' preset (in plugin manager).
* Select the imported smart preview files.
* Run 'Relative Antics' (File menu -> Plugin Extras).
* Deselect all items in 'Define "Related" section, *except* 'Custom Relative'.
* choose whether to transfer develop setting and/or metadata..
* and do it - this will copy settings and metadata from the selected imported/edited-smart-preview to the photo which should have been edited in the first place (the "related" photo).

Smart Previews issue. LR5 catalog saying "The file could not be found" for entire collection. How do I "sync" or "find" the smart previews?

I created an LR5 catalog with 1:1 previews and smart previews. I then placed the catalog along with the previews and smart previews files into dropbox.
Came home to work remotely, opened the catalog from dropbox and I can see the photos in library mode. But once I go to develop, LR is saying "The file could not be found"
Smart Preview cache file is there right below the lrcat file.
Anyone know how I can make the catalog find that smart previews cache?

There are ? next to the folders but that's to be expected because that drive is not connected to my comp.
And there are exclamation points next to each image.. but again.. drive is not connected. But I've used smart previews before and that was the fix to working without the original raw images available.
However the smart previews don't seem to be working this time as I cannot edit the images.
