SMTP Header - RCF 2822 and extra CR (Carriage return)

Hi,
I have a customer with trouble reading emails from one business partner, all other emails comes through.
I have located the problem to an extra "\r" (Carriage Return 0x0d) i the incoming mail header.
According to RFC-2822 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2822):
* The body is simply a sequence of characters that follows the header and is separated from the header by an empty line (i.e., a line with nothing preceding the CRLF).
Part of a problem header:
Subject: KxxxxS + "\r\n"
X-PHP-Originating-Script: 508:ajax_final_step.php + "\r\n"
MIME-Version: 1.0 + "\r\r\n"
Content-type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 + "\r\r\n"
From: BxxxxxS <[email protected]> + "\r\n"
Message-Id: <[email protected]> + "\r\n"
Date: Fri, 1 Aug 2014 11:04:39 +0200 (CEST) + "\r\n"
With GWIA 2012 version 12.0.2 "03/25/13" running on SLES 11 SP1, the above header translate into:
Subject: KxxxxxS + "\r\n"
X-PHP-Originating-Script: 508:ajax_final_step.php + "\r\n"
MIME-Version: 1.0 + "\r"
"\r\n"
Content-type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 + "\r"
\r\n"
From: BxxxxxS <[email protected]> + "\r\n"
Message-Id: <[email protected]> + "\r\n"
Date: Fri, 1 Aug 2014 11:04:39 +0200 (CEST) + "\r\n"
This means that the header ends before "Content-type: text/html; charset=UTF-8" and the user gets an empty email.
The contents can been seen in "message source", but with all the header and HTML ****, and normal users can't decode the content.
Is this a Groupwise GWIA problem or a problem at the business partner?
The partner say outgoing email works with Gmail, Exchange, Office 365 and Notes - and will not fix.
If just RFC-2822 was more precise and did not contain the I.E. in "(i.e., a line with nothing preceding the CRLF)".
Kind regards
Uffe Bager

Hi.
That's an interesting issue. The problem evolves around the question if
a bare carriage return is "something" when in front of a CRLF or not.
One thing is certain though: The Business Partner sending those mails is
actively asking for trouble galore by completely without sense or reason
doing something within the headers that totally stretches the rules.
Personally, I'd sayfor good measurement, Groupwise should indeed
consider the bare CR before the CRLF as "something", aka should *not*
consider the following CRLF as theend of the header. But then somebody
else will most likely come aorund, break it and lcaim that it shouldn't
be doing this.
The real question is: Why is the code of the sender here doing this? Is
there any business casesending a line with a bland CR within the
headers? If not (and of course there's noreason to do this on purpose),
then this is just sloppy coding asking for trouble.
And the old argument "but it works with others" just makes me mad. I
usually reply something along the line that others also drive their car
completely drunk and very often don't get cought by the cops and don't
kill someone doing so. *Some* people start to think then. Rarely though.

  • APEX_MAIL.SEND and MS Outlook - Carriage Returns

    Hi,
    I seem to be having an issue with carriage returns/line feeds when it comes to passing my e-mail message body (clob) from apex_mail.send over to MS Outlook.
    Prior to apex_mail.send call, I insert my e-mail message body (clob) into a dummy table to check the format with regards to carriage returns - all looks fine.
    When I eventually get the e-mail over at MS Outlook, my carriage returns on some lines - not all, are lost and everything is joined as one line.
    Any ideas/help anyone?
    Thanks.
    Tony.

    Hello,
    Before I've had that problem too and I switch to use my own breaks and used CHR(10) followed by CHR(13). But depending the mail client it's looking differently.
    I proposed you to see if CHR(10) or 13 makes a difference for you. Sorry if I was not clear.
    Regards,
    Dimitri

  • Carriage return in textarea - how do I check for and remove it???

    I have an html form that has a <textarea> element for user input. I work mainly with Java and some JavaScript. Since carriage returns are permitted in a <textarea> element, upon retrieving the value submitted, my Java and/or JavaScript variables contain carriage returns as well, making the values incomplete.
    For Example :
    String dataSubmitted = request.getParameter("formInput");
    <script language="JavaScript">
    var textValue = "<%=dataSubmitted%>";
    ....//do other stuff
    </script>When I view the source of my JSP page, the above statement of code looks like this:
    var textValue = "This is some text that
    I submitted with a carriage return";I'm putting the text submitted through this form into a mysql database, and when I pull up the values I find that it has recorded the carriage return as well. There is an actual symbol representing a carriage return in the db field.
    What I'd like to do is use some Java code to go through each character of the String and find and remove the carriage return, perhaps replacing it with an empty space instead. But how do I check for a carriage return in a String variable?
    Also, is there a way to use JavaScript to alert the user when the carriage return button is pressed when they're in the <textarea>?
    Any input is appreciated,
    Thank You,
    -Love2Java

    What I'd like to do is use some Java code to go through
    each character of the String and find and remove the
    carriage return, perhaps replacing it with an empty
    space instead. But how do I check for a carriage return
    in a String variable?The carriage return is represented by the \r. Generally there is also a newline, the \n. You can use String#replaceAll() to replace occurences of them by a space.
    string = string.replaceAll("\r\n", " ");
    Also, is there a way to use JavaScript to alert the user
    when the carriage return button is pressed when they're
    in the <textarea>?You can capture keys using the 'onkeypress' attribute. The keyCode of a the return key is 13. So simply catch that:<textarea onkeypress="if (event.keyCode == 13) alert('You pressed the return button.'); return false;"></textarea>The return false prohibits the linebreak being inserted. If you remove that, then it will be inserted anyway.

  • PHP/MySQL field recognize carriage returns?

    I'm a novice PHP/MySQL database driven site builder. I need
    to have users enter text into a field with carriage returns and
    have the database recognize and store those carriage returns so it
    displays when the data is displayed on a PHP page.
    How do I do this and please keep it simple?
    Do I need to use a particular type of MySQL datafield?
    Will I be able to use the same code on an "update"
    page?

    if you just need to replace the \n - type line breaks
    generated by multiline textareas with <br /> on a page, just
    use PHP´s native "nl2br"
    (new line to break) function:
    <?php echo nl2br($row_queryname['field_name']); ?>
    That works... sort of...
    When I use the update page to modify the entry it puts the
    proper "br" code in it's proper place. However when I return to
    that page to edit the text again (as my customer likely will), it
    displays the "br" code in the text field, and if I submit the
    update with the "br" code in place, it duplicates the "br" code
    again, so I get double "br" statements. How do I get the update
    field to read the "br" code back as carriage returns?
    In addition, my insert page uses the following code to write
    the original entry, and I'm not sure where to place the "nl2br"
    statement in the following query (generated by WebAsssist DW

  • Workaround for carriage returns?

    I am testing a workaround for the extra linefeeds/carriage returns than the software introduces automatically while typing a message, and it seems to be working just fine. The workaround was posted here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/609762?tstart=0

    This message was written normally; no Ent
    ers or Backspaces before starting to type. Obviously, the probl
    em is still here without the workaround, but seems to go if I firs
    t type the two Enters.
    Extra linefeeds kindly provided by the software.

  • Pasting loses all the carriage returns

    Hi,
    Whenever I paste text from the command line, or computer source code into mail, all the formatting is gone. I have to go back and put a carriage return at the end of every line! I've tried intermediary pastes to text editors and such, but it doesn't work. My default has now become a paste as quotation and then remove the extra level. I wish Command-V could do those two steps together instead of the useless regular paste. Is there some switch that I can use to get back the old behavior? Maybe I should consider Thunderbird.

    Hi, and welcome to the forums Jovan!
    Yep, seems to be a problem with Mail itself, seen lots of complaints, but Text Edit Pasting & recopying & Pasting seemed to work for most... gawd!
    I think Thunderbird or Eudora is the way to go, they're the ones I use. I don't trust Mail one little bit.

  • How do we remove Carriage Return (line feed) inserted in FCC files

    Hi Experts,
    The file that we generate has a carriage return at the end.
    Is there any way in which we can remove this carriage return (line feed) from the file?
    The FCC parameters used at our end are as below:
    structure.filedNames:
    structure.fieldFixedLengths:
    structure.fixedLengthTooShortHandling: Cut
    Kindly tell us a solution ASAP.
    Thanks & Regards
    Dhwani

    Dear All,
    Let me elaborate on my query
    Consider that the files output looks like below:
    12  34  45  545 5454 UL
    23  33  43  434 4545 FG
    45  44  44  586 6535 GM
    Now there is an extra line(Carriage Return) getting inserted after the last line 45  44  44  586 6535 GM  which is not required at our end.
    The cursor of the file instead of stopping on the last character M, points to the next line.
    Can you please suggest how to remove this extra line from the files.
    I dont understan how will remove context help in this case.
    Regards

  • Serious Bug - Carriage Returns in Caption field

    LR for Windows does not handle Carriage Returns/Line Feeds correctly in the metadata Caption field.
    Windows Vista SP1, 32-bit
    Adobe Lightroom 2.4
    Library Module, Grid View
    Initial settings:
    LR Menu bar > Edit > Catalog Settings... > Metadata tab > Editing
    uncheck Offer suggestions from recently entered values
    uncheck Automatically write changes into XMP
    LR Menu bar > View > View options... > Grid View tab > Cell Icons
    check Unsaved Metadata
    Metadata panel: choose the Default Metadata Set.
    Import a JPG file into LR which contains no IPTC metadata.
    LR Menu bar > File > Import Photos from disk... > Choose the JPG file
    In the Import Photos dialog box, Information to Apply:
    Develop Settings: None
    Metadata: None
    Keywords: None
    Click Import.
    Click thumbnail of the JPG file which was Imported.
    In the Metadata panel click Caption field.
    Type "Word1" in the Caption field and press Return/Enter key.
    The Caption field loses focus.
    The Caption field should not lose focus when the Return/Enter key is pressed.
    Click the Caption field and press the Delete key to remove "Word1" from the field.
    In the Caption field type "Word1" and press Ctrl+Return/Enter key.
    As expected, the cursor moves to the line below "Word1" and the Caption field remains in focus.
    Type "Word2" and press Ctrl+Return/Enter key.
    As expected, the cursor moves to the line below "Word2" and the Caption field remains in focus.
    Click the JPG thumbnail and notice a down-arrow icon appears on the thumbnail indicating that the metadata for this JPG has been changed in the LR catalog and that it does not match the IPTC metadata that is embedded in the JPG file on the hard disk. Also notice in the Metadata panel, Metadata Status is "Has been changed".
    Click the down-arrow on the JPG thumbnail.
    See the dialog box that pops up saying "The metadata for this photo has been changed in Lightroom. Save the changes to disk?"
    Click Save.
    Notice on the JPG thumbnail, the down-arrow icon remains visible and does not disappear as it should if the JPG's metadata in the LR catalog and the metadata embedded in the JPG file on the hard disk were the same.
    Also notice in the Metadata panel, Metadata Status is "Has been changed".
    Click LR Menu bar > Edit > Catalog Settings... > Metadata tab > Editing
    check Automatically write changes into XMP
    Click OK.
    Notice on the JPG thumbnail, the down-arrow icon blinks rapidly. Also notice in the Metadata panel that "Metadata Status: Has been changed" blinks rapidly.
    Click LR Menu bar > Edit > Catalog Settings... > Metadata tab > Editing
    uncheck Automatically write changes into XMP
    Notice the blinking stops.
    Using a program that properly handles Carriage Returns/Line Feeds in IPTC metadata, such as Photo Mechanic 4.5, edit the metadata of another JPG file by typing "Word1", pressing the Return/Enter key, and typing "Word2" in the Caption field.
    Import that JPG into LR.
    LR Menu bar > File > Import Photos from disk... > Choose the JPG file
    In the Import Photos dialog box, Information to Apply:
    Develop Settings: None
    Metadata: None
    Keywords: None
    Click Import.
    Click the JPG thumbnail in LR Library Module.
    Notice in the Metadata panel, "Word1Word2" appears in the Caption field, in both the Default Metadata Set and the Large Caption Metadata Set. The CR/LF has been stripped away.
    CR/LFs typed into or pasted into the Large Caption set, also result in the persistence of the down-arrow icon even after metadata is saved to disk. And, if the Automatically write changes into XMP option is checked, the down-arrow icon blinks rapidly. And, if you view the Default set, notice Metadata Status: "Has been changed" blinks rapidly.
    When metadata is saved to disk, the down-arrow icon should disappear from the thumbnail, and in the Metadata panel, Metadata Status should read "Up to date". I would guess the blinking behavior indicates LR is stuck in some kind of loop - it is trying to save the metadata to disk and verify that it has been saved, but it keeps going round in a vicious circle. I also notice there is increased hard drive activity during the blinking behavior.

    Here is a related problem (using Lightroom 3.3, Windows).  When I import photos that have the IPTC caption field created in another program (ThumbsPlus, or IrfanView), carriage returns in the original do not show up in Lightroom.  Does anyone know why, or what to do about it?  I'd like to import lots of photos with existing captions, and some have carriage returns I would like to retain.
    For me, adding a carriage return to the Caption metadata within Lightroom works fine.  In the Library view, using the right panel, I can enter a carriage return using Ctrl+Enter in the Metadata > Default view or in the Metadata > IPTC view.  I can enter a carriage return directly with the Enter key (no Ctrl required) in the Metadata > Large Caption view.  After these entries are saved to the file, they show up correctly in other programs (IrfanView > Image > Properties > IPTC Info)

  • Embedded carriage return

    We have  an application with a textarea that is used for comments, free form text. It seems that if the user enters a line of text, then uses the enter key to go to the next line, it captures the carriage return. When the form is brought up for review, it is completely empty, yet all the data that was entered is in the table.
    If the textarea is entered without using the enter key, the data displays when the form is reviewed.
    I have never encountered this problem before and tried it and it does indeed do what is described above. I entered the textarea without using the enter key and the data displays. I went back to edit and added the enter key to the textarea and the form is completely blank.
    What is going on and how can I prevent this from happening ?

    The data is not missing. It is in table after submit. It is just not showing up when using html/form to review. Using <cfinput type="text" name="field" value="qryField">, etc..., when there is a carriage return used in the textarea.
    We took the textarea data, scrubbed out the carrirage return characters, and reinserted in the table, and then entire form displayed. When I went back to edit the form and added the carriage returns, nothing displayed.
    We have isolated the problem to the carriage return in the text area becuause that is the only thing we have touched so far.

  • Please explain me how I can use Form feed(\f) and Carriage return(\r)

    what is Form feed(\f) and Carriage return(\r)?
    Please explain to me.
    Thank you.

    These control characters aren't used much these days except that if you example a Windows or MSDOS text file in a binary editor you'll find each line ends with "\r\n". However when reading or writing text through classes these carriage returns will be added and removed automatically so your program doesn't see them.
    The controlls date back to teletype machines which operated rather like typewriters. Cariage return, as it's name implied, caused the print head to move back to the start of the line, line feed advanced a line (without, necessarilly, returning the carriage) and formfeed skipped to the next page.
    Newline on these machines was always "return, linefeed" because executing the carriage return on these machine could take too long. The early machines had only a single character buffer so that they had to executed the characters as quickly as they arrived. So doing the linefeed after the carriage return gave the carriage more time to return. On some teletypes if you did "linefeed, return" then the first character of the new line would often be printed somewhere in the middle of the line.
    This is the origin of the MSDOS/Windows end of line sequence.
    Many printers will still respect formfeed if printing is direct. Some will take carriage return without linefeed to allow you to start again overprinting the same line.
    However printing, these days, is seldom direct but done in bitmap form.

  • Read Only TextAreas with Carriage Return, Line Breaks and Word Wrapping

    Hi all,
    I know there are a few posts around this subject but I cannot find the answer to the exact problem I have.
    I have a page that has a 'TextArea with Character Counter' (4000 Chars) that is conditionally read only based on the users credentials (using the 'Read Only' attributes of the TextArea item).
    When the field is editable (not Read Only) everything works fine but when I make the field Read Only I start to have problems:
    The first problem is that the Carriage Return and Line Breaks are ignored and the text becomes one continuos block. I have managed to fix this by adding pre and post element text of pre and /pre tags. This has made the Carriage Return and Line Breaks word nicely and dispaly correctly.
    However, it has introduced a second problem. Long lines, with no Carriage Returns or Line Breaks, now extend to the far right of the page with no word wrapping, making my page potentially 4000+ characters wide.
    How can I get the field to be display only, with recognised Carriage Returns and Line Breaks, and Word Wrapping inside a fixed width of, say, 150 characters?
    Many thanks,
    Martin

  • Extra Carriage Return While Using GUI_DOWNLOAD in ASC Mode

    Dear All,
    Happy New Year..First of All!
    We are facing a problem in using FM GUI_DOWNLOAD for downloading internal table data in ASC Format. The FM seems to be adding one extra Line Feed / Carriage Return in the end of the file. We have debugged the code, and found that the internal table is populated correctly,but after the FM is called and the file is downloaded to the PC, we find that there is one extra blank line that is appended after the data. We have gone through some similar topics in SDN , some of them being:
    GUI_DOWNLOAD : Extra Line
    gui_download - last line
    GUI_DOWNLOAD
    We are already using the parameters TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS = 'X', TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS_EOL = 'X' and WRITE_LF_AFTER_LAST_LINE = ' ', with no effect. Also tried searching in OSS, but did not find a proper note. Can anybody please throw some light on this problem?
    Thanks and Sincere Regards,
    Amitabha

    Hi...
    If you can not ignore this problem. Because it download data line by line. First it set the cursor then download one record and so. For final record it it download the record then set the cursor to next line. Then it check that no more lines in the internal table. Then it exit from the FM.
    Thank
    Subhankar.

These fields contain all our bespoke field values joined together so they are 229 and 250 characters long respectively, which I think is related to the problem. The mapping program looks like this:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
    <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="UTF-8" omit-xml-declaration="no" indent="yes"/>
    <xsl:template match="/">
    <ARTMAS04>
    <IDOC>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/EDI_DC40"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MATHEAD"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARART"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARAEXTRT"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MAKTRT"/>
      <xsl:for-each select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARCRT">
        <xsl:if test="(PLANT='D100') or (PLANT='D200') or (PLANT='D300')">
          <xsl:copy-of select="."/>
        </xsl:if>
      </xsl:for-each>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MARMRT"/>
      <xsl:copy-of select="//ARTMAS04/IDOC/E1BPE1MEANRT"/>
    </IDOC>
    </ARTMAS04>
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    I have a test IDoc going through this and the first 3 characters of the FIELD1 are "BIK". If I look at the source of the XML file, the problem area looks like this:
    <E1BPE1MARAEXTRT SEGMENT="1">
          <FUNCTION>004</FUNCTION>
          <MATERIAL>000000000000895649</MATERIAL>
          <b><FIELD1>
            BIK</b>      0  0.00 T                                    000000001CARRERA FURY 04 20"     CARRERA FURY 04 20" 2005092420040622    X                    00000000   20031104 00200406140000000000                    0.00 0000000
          </FIELD1>
    You can't really see it above, but there is a carriage return and 8 white spaces before the BIK. Where does this carriage return and white space come from?! Any help would be really appreciated - this is driving me crazy!
    Many thanks,
    Stuart Richards

    Stuart,
    I think I know the cause to your problem. I am not an XSLT programmer but based on searching this forum I found how I can acheive the carriage return at the end of my document. Your xsl statement is as follows:
    <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="UTF-8" omit-xml-declaration="no" indent="yes"/>
    Change the indent value from yes to no. This should remove the carraige return. Hope this works for you.
    I actually need a carriage return and line feed on my document so I am still stuck. All I have acheived is the carraige return.
    Thanks,
    Jim
