Smtp in Hangs for every fews days.

I am running iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 sp1 on solaris 2.8 with kernel patch level 23 .
For every few days say for 3-4 days once smtp process stops hanging. When I do a telnet to port 25 , it just stop as "Escape character is '^]'." It is not displaying the iMS banner.
If a do a restart of services , it is ready to accept the requests.

  • Mac server hangs every few days. where to look for cause?

I have a Mac server that hangs every few days and requires a hard reboot.
It is run headless so we have no screen feed back of what is happening when it hangs.
It is possible that just the network communications fail. But it is in software because a reboot restores the situation everytime.
I could use some advice on where to look for possible causes: which logs, or dumps that are produced by the system.
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Does it create a problem if I only connect the backup external drive every few days for use with Time Machine?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

After a near miss with my 4-year old MacBook, I finally wised up and purchased a WD My Passport for Mac to back up my hard drive. I connected the Passport today and have performed the first full backup.  However, I do not wish to keep it permanently connected to the laptop.  Does this create a problem if I only connect the drive every few days?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

    Hello,
I don't think it'll cause a problem, but I'd disable/turn off Time Machine before disconnecting, then turn it back on after you connect it again.

  • New MacBook Pro with 10.6.3 Freezes for 5-10 minutes every few days

I've got a brand new (i7 processor) MacBook Pro with 10.6.3 OS on it. Right from the first day I had it, it has had a problem freezing for 5 - 10 minutes every few days. When it is "frozen" nothing works - cursor doesn't track the mouse, clock doesn't increment to a new minute, nothing updates on the screen.
I turned on remote login, so I can ssh to it and see what's going on, and by running "top -o cpu" I can see that the kernel_task process is using over 100% of the CPU - other processes are getting some cycles - top, for instance - but the kernel is dominating the dispatch queue.
When this first happened, I thought the computer was dead, so I powered off and rebooted. However, once I could see that things were still running but the display was locked up, I tried waiting. Sure enough, every time the system comes back if I wait long enough. When it comes back, everything operates just fine.
Any thoughts on what I can do about this? I don't imagine that killing the kernel_task is a good idea(!). Maybe sending it an appropriate signal? I'm happy to get some more diagnostic information - just give me suggestions on what I can try. Note that it will have to be command line only, as I can only ssh into the laptop when it gets frozen like this.
    Thanks.

Interesting - but that poster is complaining about the mouse and keyboard being unresponsive or going dead, not the comprehensive freeze I'm experiencing (unless "go haywire" means freezing). Not only are my mouse and keyboard unresponsive, but windows on the screen stop updating - even the clock in the upper right corner stops advancing.
For the record, I'm using the keyboard in the MBP - not much choice there - and a Razer bluetooth mouse that had no problems with my last MBP.
Still, they could be related. Something is making the kernel get very busy for a long time before it recovers. I just wish I knew what that was AND how it eventually recovers - perhaps I can accelerate the recovery if I knew the cause.
Anybody else experiencing the same thing? Note - I don't get a beachball and there is no cursor flashing (unlike the other thread on freezing). It looks like the system is completely hung, except that I can still ssh into the MBP and run things like top; overall, the CPU is over 70% idle.

  • Late 2012 iMac Freezes every few days

My iMac has been in the Apple Store for a week with the Geniuses and they came back saying they couldn't find anything so putting this out to this community in the hope someone else can help. Here are the details.
    Model: 21.5 inch Late-2012 iMac
    RAM: 8Gb
    Processor: 2.9Ghz Intel Core i5
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
Hard Drive: 1.12 Tb Fusion (653Gb free)
    OS: 10.8.4
Software: Fairly vanilla with no MS or Adobe Apps. No system extensions or hacks installed.
Symptom: Every few days or so the iMac locks up. Certain running applications will still work but many common ones such as Pages, Aperture, App Store & TextEdit will hang when trying to open. Force Quitting them doesn't affect them. When I try to shut down the computer it goes to the grey screen and stays there. Eventually the power needs to be turned off to reboot it. This has been doing this for the last several months.
    Solutions Tried:
    - Fixed permissions
    - Reset PRAM
    - Re-install OS X
I can't replicate the crash but today it happened again. At around 3:50pm I went to the iMac and noticed that Pages wouldn't load. Force quitting the App didn't do anything. Aperture was not responding so force quit that. Still wouldn't re-open. Mail was working fine and I was able to send a test message. Safari worked fine. Launched System Preferences ok but could not launch TextEdit or App Store. Calendar opened and closed fine. Attempted to restart the Mac but got the grey screen and after 5 minutes of waiting turned the computer off & relaunched it.

Notice that the last Console entry was at 2:47pm (in red) and then nothing. I went to use the computer at 3:50pm and did several actions on it. Plugged in iPad, opened iTunes. Copied a file from the iPad to the desktop. Prior to that it hadn't been used for several hours. The shutdown that I selected does not appear in the log (although it only managed to go to the grey screen rather than complete a full shut down).
Appreciate any clues at all here. This is very frustrating and has been going on for far too long.
    TIA. Jordan

  • I need to share a file with sec.(windows based). She uses it all the time. I need to just download updated version every few days. I have an old airport extreme and was hoping to attach an external drive. Will this work?

I need to download an updated version of a file every few days to use. My secretary  works on the file all the time. I thought i could use my old airport extreme and attach an external HD and set up a network to do just this. At work we alll use pc's. How can i make this work? At the moment we use usb stick to transfer which is getting to be a bit of a pain as the file grows every week. Presently 5GB.

I thought i could use my old airport extreme and attach an external HD and set up a network to do just this.
Yes, you can use either the 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to attach an external USB HDD for file sharing. Either AEBS model would allow you to share out this HDD to either Macs or PCs. From the PC, the shared HDD would appear as a network drive which you can map via Windows Explorer.

  • IPhone loses WiFi every few days

Hi. My iPhone 4S has been acting strange recently. Every few days or so my WiFi will stop working. It shows In the corner that it's connected but nothing that uses the Internet works. I go into Settings and turn WiFi off and on and it tries to connect but the wheel just spins next to the network name. Other devices in my house work fine during that time but the iPhone won't connect. Usually the only way I can get it working again is to reset my network settings on the phone.
I'm wondering if it's my router possibly? It's a Linksys WRT54G that we've had for a long time. I'm using WPA Personal. Could my router be getting too old? Ive also noticed lately that my WiFi strength goes from two to three bars quite a bit on the iPhone. I always had full bars in the past. My channel is on 11 but I tried to change it the other day which caused my Xbox to not connect so that's another reason I'm leaning toward the router being too old. But the fact that my phone can lose signal while everything else in my house is unaffected makes me feel like it could be the phone.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • New AirPort Extreme w/ Time Machine disk crashes every few days

I bought an AirPort Extreme base station about a month ago. It's currently in bridge mode, connected to my U-Verse residential gateway, and has a 1 TB hard drive attached to it that I use for Time Machine backups. The drive is formatted HFS+ and both computers that connect to the AirPort are MacBooks. Every few days, usually overnight, Time Machine will stop working, saying that it cannot connect to the backup disk. If I try to access the shared disk in FInder, it times out. The Internet connection works fine and if I go into the AirPort Utility, it shows up. But if I click on "Manual Setup," it will time out. If I try to restart the router from the menu bar option, it will time out. The only way to fix it is to manually unplug the router and restart it that way. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or know how to prevent it?

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Every few days, usually overnight, Time Machine will stop working, saying that it cannot connect to the backup disk.
Yup, that's the sort of thing that happens sometimes in this scenario.
You might be able to improve that by, of all odd things, changing some names. See #P1 in the same place.
Another possibility is the external HD going to sleep and not waking up quickly enough. Check with the maker for firmware updates or ways to adjust it's sleep (or "spin down") performance.

That, I suspect, is a different problem (and mostly out of my area).
But this Apple article may be helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
Hopefully one of the networking gurus, such as Tesserax or Bob Timmons, will have more insight.

  • Re-license every few days

I recently purchased CC and I'm being constantly nagged about licensing my product.  It's been licensed for the better part of a month, but every few days I get a pop-up that says that I have 0 days left and I need to buy or license.  I click license and it checks with momma and says I'm OK.  In a day or two we'll go thru this drill again.  After a month of this it's getting really irritating ... REALLY irritating!  Anybody know what's up?

  • IChat AV 3.1.9 Keeps Wanting Setup at startup every few days--Why?

I have three Macs and all are setup using mobile accounts so that my data on each machine is pretty much identical; however, my office machine does not have an iSight for video chat, whereas, my home and laptop both do. My User/Library does not sync, but everything else does. Any ideas why iChat AV wants me to run setup every few days?

What does happen when you try to synch the Library ?
The Library has a Sub folder for Preferences.
It hold amoungst other things the iChat .plists Removing all of these will get iChat to Redo the Start Up Screens.

  • My reset iCloud password only works for a few days

I have a MacBookPro and iPhone 4. About 2 months ago, I began to get notices on the MBP that there was a password problem with my iCloud/AppleID.
When I try to log in using my current password, I get a reject telling me that the password is incorrect (also I'm unable to dl updates on the iPhone4 at this point).
I'll go to forgotmypassword, go through the security questions, reset the password and can now log in as normal (I can now dl updates on the iPhone4)..but this fix will only "last" for a few days. I reset it today 1/7/14..the last reset was 12/30.

    This should fix the issue:
Special thanks to Roger Wilmut for providing the detailed instructions below.
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/Roger%20Wilmut1
    1. Shut down Mail.  Next, deselect "iCloud Mail" in the iCloud preferences pane in System Preferences FIRST.  If not, it will automatically pre-populate the wrong p9X.mail.me.com server names again overwriting all your work.
    2. Now restart Mail and go to preferences.  If "iCloud" mail is still showing, select it and click on the "-" at the bottom to remove it.
    3. Now follow the instructions here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html (disregard that this is for Snow Leopard, it DOES work on Lion) paying attention to the use of the "option" key when needed to avoid Mail automatically "creating" the account and closing out the preferences window.
    4. Ensure the correct server names of "imap.mail.me.com and smtp.mail.me.com" are still there and close Mail preferences and now select "get mail".  It may prompt one last time for your iCloud password, enter it and you are done.
    Good Luck.

  • My host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

my host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

There are several possible causes for this problem.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • Airport Express goes MIA every few days

I am using Windows Vista, and Airport Express to create a wireless network (it is the only wireless router, connected to a wired router). Every couple of weeks or so on average, my computer will be unable to find the network. I have found no pattern, no triggering action. Out of the blue, one day, it will not find the network. Nothing but a hard reset and going through the setup again will help (and even then, it takes 15-20 attempts before the Airport Utility finally sees the freshly reset Airport Express).
I have tried this with two different laptops. It is only the one that is used to update/setup the Airport Express that refuses to find it afterwards. Other devices will continue to be able to see and connect to network (Android phone, iPhone, iPad, etc).
This has been bothering me for at least a couple of years now. I have tried lots of different security settings, and pretty much all the options I can see. I have scoured Google and can't really find anyone else having had the same problem. It is driving me crazy.
Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? I am currently in the position where my laptop has lost the Airport Express, Airport Utility can't see it and I have to use a different wi-fi. Other devides continue to see and use the network I had created with my laptop.
This happened with Win 98, and now it is happening with Vista on a new laptop. This has happened with two different routers, two different ISPs, and on two different continents. I really want to use Airport Express for iTunes, but this will drive me mad!
Any help will be massively appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to the discussions, Bob!
+I have an older igloo airport extreme and every few days it will drop internet connectivity+
If the problem seems to have started recently, that would be a clue that someone near you has probably setup a new wireless network that may be interfering with your signal, or there may even be a new cordless phone next door that is causing some issues.
(My neighbor...across the street...can literally knock me off the internet if he happens to walk out his front door talking on his cordless phone; something I found out only by accident one day)
The easiest potential solution, without downloading utilities to try to identify other networks near you, is to simply experiment by changing the channel on your wireless network to see if you can find some better airspace. Keep a record so you can track your changes, what works better, what doesn't, etc.
Here's how to change the channel on your wireless:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The Channel setting is on this page
Click Update to save your changes and the Airport Extreme will take about 20-25 seconds to restart again.
Maybe start on the high channel...11 and try that first, then work down from there as the lower channels 1 tend to be more crowded, but there are no hard and fast rules.
Hopefully, there are not too many networks around you and you'll be able to find the "right" channel.

  • My Timecapsule Stops Working every few days!

I have a 2TB Timecapsule that has worked flawlessly for about 18 months.  Over the last month it has stopped working every few days.  When I say it stops working the wirless networks go off and the wired router stops.  The lights are green on the back where the cables connect and on front I have a green status light.  But the devices stops functioning.  I pull the power and wait a little while and plug it back in and everything works again for a few days (could be a week) could be 2-3 days.
It is running the latest firmware and I haven't changed its configuration in many months.
No idea what to do... Any sugestions?

The lockup is across all devices??
Are any still working when the computer say is unable to connect?
It could be the latest firmware that is the problem.. that changed about 1-2months ago.
You can try doing a factory reset and a new clean setup but more than likely the issue will continue.
To go back to earlier firmware hold down the option key when you choose firmware. It will then show older as well as new versions.. Select 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2
Factory reset after the firmware and do the setup again.
