SMTP password problem with WRT54G or WRV200

I have a problem sending email in that the SMTP password cannot be successfully sent. I have found that if the router is rebooted, email can be sent for maybe 10 minutes. After that time, the password is refused no matter how many times it is tried. I have tried Thunderbird and Apple Mail as the email client and they both behave the same. I have tried 2 different routers, the WRT54G and WRV200 and they behave the same. I have connected my computer directly to the modem and email can be sent successfully all the time. I am on SBC/AT&T DSL service - it's Yahoo email servers. My computer is a Mac running OX X v10.5 (Leopard). I normally use Thunderbird as my email client and it has worked for some time.

ISP is SBC/AT&T DSL. The email servers are on Yahoo. I am not sure of the question about private/public address of the router. The IP address of the router is assigned by SBC/AT&T - I guess that's public. The firmware of the WRT54G is the latest from your website. I don't really have a Windows computer to give a verdict on whether it happens there. I have tried using the Apple Mail application and it behaves in the same way as the Thunderbird client. Email sending is normal for about 10 minutes after booting the router and then after 10 minutes the sending of the SMTP password fails. Rebooting the router will get you another 10 minutes of successful email sending. As I described bnefore: If I take the router out of my network and connect my computer directly to the DSL modem, then email can be sent at any time. The computer is logging onto the SBC/AT&T network PPPoE with no router involved. Of course, I do not have to change any settings in my email client for this experiment. This proves to me that the email client is working and configured correctly. Keep in mind that this email client has been working correctly for some time (years) in this configuration. I am always able to receive email from the POP server. Message Edited by darowa on 03-16-2008 02:28 PM

  • Password problem with 10.4.11 (Eudora 6.2.4)

I'm relatively new to OSX, slowly learning it, and migrating from a beige G3/OS9. I used Eudora 6.1 on the old Mac, installed 6.2.4 on this iBook, and got it configured to work. I discovered a problem with how I installed Tiger, and it necessitated a full re-install of everything.
Now, when I try to send email from Eudora, the system asks for my password. Twice. It asks for a password for my email account. Then the system asks for my keychain password ("login", login.keychain, Eudora). It responds with an "invalid password" error message.
I'm stuck, and don't understand OSX enough to solve this. I can't find any way of uncovering some other password log within OSX, or a thread on this discussion about this.
I'd like to solve this today, keeping Eudora for all my old email archives, then switch tomorrow to Mac Mail moving forward. Thanks for your help!

Well, it's not getting through to Comcast at all, either Username,
Password, Port number, or SMTP settings or such...
    Right.
The settings should be the same as Mail or Outlook, or any other
Mail App... just different places & terminology,
Perhaps they should, but the "places & terminology" might be an easy translation for a Net technical wizard, not for me.
I have used Eudora, as I described, in OS9 for MANY years, and the settings were fine. I use Comcast ONLY for sending email and access to the Net, I have my own mail server, so Comcast's FAQs are virtually no help, since they don't apply to the places and terminology of Eudora 6.2.4.
I'm using pretty much the same settings as I used on my OS9 system (Eudora 6.1). The problem remains, as I originally described, to be some barrier related to password, and limited to my iBook. I suspect OSX, not Eudora, as the password dialog is similar to other password dialog boxes OSX is repetitively throwing at me. Also, I doubt that Eudora is giving me the error and "too many attempts" dialog boxes: Eudora would probably just attempt to send the email, and let my mail server refuse the password, which it's obviously never getting the chance to do.
The problem is with the keychain login, which I have to believe is an OSX problem, not Eudora.
I just tried to set up Mac Mail, and since Comcast doesn't post an FAQ for the version I have, I spent an hour talking to two different support people, trying to get the setup properly done. As I was completing the setup, Mail tried to check the setup with Comcast's outgoing mail server, and it gave me the SAME keychain password dialog box as I have gotten when trying to use Eudora, and the same failed password error message.
(The one difference is that Mail confirmed the incoming mail server username and password.)
Since I can't find any Keychain related to what I'm doing, I've tried to check the only others I see. I tried to view the Safari Autofill keychain/password, and it asks me for a login.keychain password. I gave the ONLY password I've ever used on this computer, and it gives me the error message again. Like I said, there's a problem with OSX, and I can't figure out how to get past a password that I obviously didn't create, or may not even exist on my computer!
I don't know what else to tell here....

  • Network cable unplugged problem with WRT54G

I just got a WRT54G wireless router recently, and experienced some problems with it. There are 5 notebooks in my network using wireless card and 2 PCs connect to the router through cables. The router is with ver 7.00.1 firmware.
The router is working fine, the problem is sometimes it will show "Network cable unplugged" on my PC, and the whole network will be interruptted, the network will be resumed in few seconds and all machines need to get IP from the DHCP server again. It's quite annoying to be disconnected from middle of the work. I don't know what is the cause, seems like the router is re-reading it's configuration. I have tried to refresh the fireware but with no luck. Someone else got this problem before? anyone has a solution for this? Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Leo

Try the following tips to resolve your problem:
Disable the Ethernet network adapter if you are not using it. This applies, for example, when running a WiFi home network with computers that have built-in Ethernet adapters. To disable the adapter, double-click the small Network Cable Unplugged error window and choose the Disable option.
Check both ends of the Ethernet cable connected to the adapter to ensure they are not loose.
Replace the Ethernet cable with a different one to verify the cable is not damaged.
Update the network adapter driver software from the manufacturer's Web site.
Change the Link Speed and Duplex settings (using Device Manager) to use "100 Mbps Full Duplex" or "10 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of Auto Detect.
    Replace the Ethernet network adapter
    Good Luck,
    Ttech

  • Username/ password problems with apps

I have had my iphone for 6 months and never had any problems downloading apps until the past couple of days. Now when I go to install an app it is asking me for my username and password and not recognising the information I'm putting in- keeps referring me back to itunes. Any ideas what's going on?

    annarose wrote:
Thank you for the reply. I have done that and I've confirmed that the information is right. I downloaded 3.0 a few days ago. Do you think that's the issue? Does anyone know of other similar problems with 3.0?
Considering that 3.0 has not yet been officially released by Apple, I'd certain think that is what has caused (or at least contributed) to your probems.

  • Password problem with Word since 10.6.4 installed

Using mac os x 10.6.4 and office mac 2004 updated (student).
I have a word document that I have been using for 5 years with a password. Now it cannot be opened because 'this document is protected by a password with a number (chiffrement) method that is not available in this country'. I have the password, but no access to enter it.
Same problem with back-ups of this document on other supports!!!!!
    Any hint anybody?

Ma femme m'a suggéré d'essayer d'ouvrir le document sur le vieil iBook. Ça a fonctionné. J'ai entré le mot de passe, le docu s'est ouvert. J'ai enlevé le mot de passe et je suis revenu ici sur le MacBook et tout fonctionne. J'ai réinstallé le même mot de passe et ça fonctionne.

  • Problems with WRT54GS and EasyLink after adding Comcast Digital Voice.

I had a working network. Cable modem (Comcast), WRT54GS, 2 wired PCs (one XP/SP3, one Vista Home Edition SP1), 2 wireless laptop PCs (one XP/SP3, one Vista Home Edition SP1) and a HP OfficeJet 7210 printer (connected to WRT54GS as network printer). Everything was fine and worked.
Then, I added Comcast Digital Voice. Obviously, they switched the cable modem for a new cable modem with the phone service option. Now, I can't print to the OfficeJet from the wired Vista PC, and EasyLink displays "initializing" for as long as I'll wait (5+ minutes).
I finally have to kill EasyLink from the TaskManager. Any help or ideas appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I solved the problem. It turns out the new cable modem and problem with EasyLink initializing were "red herrings".
The problem turned out to be a classic network problem! The hard-wired Vista PC had the wrong IP address. The wireless XP PC had the printer configured by network name  instead of network (i.e. IP) address.
When I deleted the printer on the Vista PC and re-added it with the correct address everything worked fine.
Apparently the printer got a new IP address from the server on the WRT54GS after the installation of the new modem. Also, it looks like Vista doesn't report a communication error for a network printer, but does for a USB direct connect.

To resolve this problem i perform a factory resest and then unplug my modem from it's power source leave it for 30 seconds and then connect it again... and this seems to work all and good for that period i use the computer for. But when i turn the computer back on the next day the internet connection is lost. The modem im using is a Motorola SB5100
Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this?

You need to upgrade your router's firmware, reset it and re-configure it...
    Download 1.59 MB Firmware...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • HELP! "smtp" password problem

    hi -
i am trying to set up my mail account - i have had my new ibook since the beginning of the semester and have been very happy - but recently decided to shift from my university's clunky email program to mail.
apple, apparently, does not want me. i constantly get prompted for my "smtp" password, which it then tells me is wrong. i've changed my password back and forth to make sure that i am entering the right thing, but to no avail. i feel like ripping my hair out.
    does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks so much.

My memory does not extend back as far as 10.2 (Jaguar) under what is possible with Mail. I am surprised to hear that you are in the U.K., and you are still using "smtp.*****.com" on your outgoing smtp-settings under your Mail program's Preferences. If my memory serves me correctly, it should be something like "smtp.*****.co.uk" .
Also, a firewall "blocks" most TCP port-numbers from any data getting-in-or-out (either good or bad). With networks, your machine has a unique "IP" address assigned to it, and a certain-type-of-program (such as "Microsoft Word") would use certain TCP port-numbers and an "IP"-address to pass data between itself, and other types-of-programs on either your machine, or other machines on the network. Under 10.3 & 10.4 (and possibly 10.2) the standard firewall is reached by "System Preferences", then clicking on the "Sharing" panel, then the "Firewall" tab. See if the "Firewall" has been started (under most Macs, the default is "off"). If "on", Ports 25, and 110 must be left open (unblocked), so that the Mail program can communicate (one is outgoing-mail, the other incoming-mail). Port 80 must be left open (unblocked), so that your browser can communicate. iTunes has its own port which must be left open (unblocked). If you have a Combo or Super-drive (one capable of reading a DVD), you might consider joining the rest of the world, and upgrading directly to 10.4.3 (Tiger), but you also need Stuffit Deluxe 10.0, and Intego Internet Security Barrier (that'll run-you over $320 U.S.).

  • Problems with wrt54gs v. 06

I keep losing internet acess on all computers with this router. Now when I hook my old router back up that is a linksys b router it works fine but then i hook the g router back up no internet. I have did the powercycle and it didn't work. I notice the G routers been having this problem.

Ok it keeps disconnecting from my the computer its hooked up too. And I updated the firemware it stayed on for one day. Then i powered up the computer the next day it wouldn't work. and this is all the computer the wired one and the wireless ones (I have a laptop and another desk top connected wirelessly). It just annoying that I have to keep hooking up the b router cause the g one keeps cutting off. I have Windows XP on all the computers. I got the Usb adaptor on the desktop and My dell has the Intel Pro Wireless 2200 b/g card. once I get connection on my computer that has the router hooked up to it I have no problems with the wireless ones.

  • Password problem with Time Capsule - Time Machine

Recently got a new 500 Gb Time Capsule. I am trying to set up Time Machine to back up on the Time Capsule. When I select the Time Capsule as the device to back up to, I am asked for a user name and password. When I enter what I am pretty sure are my username and password, and try everything else I can think of, I get an error saying that the user name or password are invalid. Any suggestions? Can I reset my user name and password on the device?

Both the Time Capsule (TC) and AirPort Disks (USB hard drives connected to 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations), can be configured for any one of the following means to provide access:
o With Base Station Password (default): With this method a single password is used to secure the base station’s settings and any attached hard disks.
o With a Disk Password: This method employs a password that controls access to all disks; this password is distinct from the base-station password.
o With Accounts: On partitions formatted with HFS+, you can set up individual user names and passwords, each with different levels of access; these accounts are distinct from any Mac OS X or
    Windows user accounts.
If you elected not to set up a specific password, it will default to the TC's base station administrator credentials ... which should be public with no password. However, if this doesn't work, you can reset the TC's password by performing a "hard" reset.

  • Admin problem with WRT54G

I am logging into my WRT54G to try to upgrade my firmware. The problem is that when I log in, I get a error on the page and it will not bring up any of the links or icons that I would use to go to Administration or check my wireless or anything. Does anyone even know where to start with this? I am using XP Pro and IE6 SP2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Derek

If you are getting a 401 error, the router most likely did not accept your user name and password.  The defaults are:  user name is left blank, and password is "admin"  (with no quotes).  If you changed these, then you will need to enter whatever you changed them to.  If you cannot remember what you set them to, then the only other option is to reset the router to factory defaults.  This will reset the user name and password to the values noted above.
Sometimes this problem is caused by communication errors between the computer and router.  To correct this, do the following:
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall. Note that some Zone Alarm users have had to uninstall the firewall to get it turned off.
If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router.

  • Connection problems with WRT54G Router PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hello all,
Im having a huge issue and im hoping that someone can help me. Awhile ago i changed what i believe to be my router settings using 192.168.1.1 and i believe i added WEP secuirty. I changed my password i know that much. Anyway my problem is this - When i try connecting a router to my computer, i cannot access the internet OR the 192.168.1.1 setup. I just get a yellow caution sign on my wireless settings (running Windows 7), but when i connect my cable modem (Comcast) to my computer, i can access the internet. I have reset both the router and my cable modem MANY times (hard resets) and STILL cannot get the setup page for the router. I have TWO WRT54G rourters and BOTH do the same thing when connected to my desktop , yet BOTH work fine on an old machine running XP, so it is something i did with this computer. Can someone please help me solve this issue? any hlep would be appreciated as i am stumped and do not know how to fix this and cannot use WI-FI or my Xbox 360 until i can fix this..Thanks.

Check the IP address of your computer and see if it's in range with the router's IP.
