Snow, first time setting up, can't connect...

Hi, I am pretty embarassed about the vagueness of my problem, but it is because my Graphite base station has been so very good to me the past 5 years, I really don't know how to set these things up.
Ok, after trying to search as much as possible on this forum before I posted, I found out that my Graphite has a blown capacitor (single non-flashing red light). And I am Ok with that - I'm not going to bother trying to repair it. Instead, I borrowed my parents' Snow Base Station. I have renamed it, reconfigured it and everything I could find to do in the AP Utility. I have bars in the upper right hand of my screen, so it is noticed. But there is NO time elapsing. In Internet Connect, it says "connected to the internet via PPPoE", but when I am really not. I can't retrieve mail or surf the web. It seems to me that I do not have some ISP setting right... right? I've tried everything without luck. Right now, I am connected to the internet with the modem connected directly to my computer, so why are the settings working here?
I do have my Graphite manual somewhere, but like I said, I haven't seen it in 5 years! Just hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have DSL through SBC Yahoo (with a @pacbell.net addy), WireSpeed modem. Thanks for any info!

Can you connect to the Base Station's wireless network, run the Airport Admin Utility, and view the configuration of the Airport Base Station? If so, click on the Internet tab of that Utility. Make sure you have selected to "connect using PPP over ethernet". Enter your internet account user name and password. Click the box to "Always stay connected". Update settings to the Base Station.
Then make sure your modem is cabled to the Base Station's WAN port (labelled with the "circle of dots" icon). Pull power to both the modem and Base Station for five minutes. Then plug the modem into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Base Station into power and wait a minute. Then reconnect your Mac to the Base Station's wireless network, and try internet access again.

  • First time MacBook user can't connect to a wireless network

Just got my first mac (mbpro 15) yesterday and can't seem to connect to my wireless network. I can see my network but when I select it, it doesn't connect. Do I have to do anything with my router since this is my first mac? The connection for my airport is showing as an amber color. What can I do to connect my cmputer to the Internet? Thanks

I just got done dealing with this. It took me 2 days and after 5 hours on the phone with Apple and Belkin they could not help me. I found out what to do after reading the forms. Try turning off the security on your router first. Then reset the router. Open the MacBook network preferences go to advanced setting for the airport. Delete your network connection. Now turn off your airport then turn it back on. Find your network again and connect now that the security if off. When this is done restart your MacBook. You should be able to connect now. This worked for me. I did not want to keep my network open so I then added the WPA2 security if you have it or use WPA pick a password and then start the process again. Reset the router. Open the MacBook network preferences go to advanced setting for the airport. Delete your network connection. Now turn off your airport then turn it back on. Find your network again and connect putting in the password this time. Now restart the MacBook and with some luck you should be good to go. I was ready to throw my MacBook out a window before I figured this out. Please let me know if you need more details than this. Good luck.

  • First time set-up and HDD to SSD advice (MBP 13")

Hello. So, earlier this week I ordered the MBP 13 non-retina (Model #:A1278). It arrived yesterday. I haven't turned it on yet, and I know all about changing completely the first time for battery conditioning. I'm planning on using it for school this fall. Do you as a community have any favorite software for academic use (free or not)? Are there any programs, utilities, etc. that would benefit my mac that you recommend downloading. Second topic: I want to put in an SSD instead of the stock 500GB 5400rpm one. I bought this[1] earlier this year and never used it in my PC as planned. So, I'll clone the HHD to the SSD immediately after first time set up, right? I'd like to put the stock HDD back in with a caddy. There's a bunch of talk describing MBP's with year and time of year (late-2009, mid-2012, etc.). I have not seen mid-2013 once. Would this one[2] work in the most recent MDP 13 non-retina; the reviews don't specify. Thanks! Please leave any others things worth sharing.

Office 2011 is an essential for the university. A backup drive and backup software. Develop a backup strategy and stick to it.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
While your computer is in warranty do not make any internal hardware changes. The minute you open the case your warranty and service support flies out the window. If you wish to use an SSD then put it in an external Thunderbolt caddy like the Seagate caddy.

please i need help, im worried that if I connect my ipod here, it will burn or sometihng bad.

Just connect it to a computer's USB port.
Most wall chargers are dual voltage (110- 220 volts) and only require a plug adopter. Check the wall charger to see if yours is.

  • I have an imac osx 5 mos.old. First time today I can not open my desktop folder/files. I need to read them. Message is: appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly. I need to read them. Is it possible that new software downloaded yesterday is problem?

I have an imac osx 5 months old. For the first time today I can not open my desktop folders which are very important to me. How can I open these folders.
The message when I click on the folder is "appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly". I can not open the folder. Is it possible that new software installed could cause the problem when I get the message "new softward available for your computer, install now. Maybe I should never install upgrade. Please help in layman's language how to open my folders. Thanks.

The curious thing here is that on the one hand the code cannot be loaded so how could the trojan code be ever executed.  But you would expect the "Unexpectedly quit" message if the intel trojan did get executed in a ppc app.  So this begs the question when (and how) does the trojan code get executed in conjunction with launching an app?
I understand code injected into a specific app like safari that uses the global environment variable to access the code in /Users/Shared.  But I don't understand how that code could be executed by attempting to run an randomly chosen ppc app.  Unless of course   other code has been injected is in a more critical place than just safari and that is scary.
Some of this was explained to us a few weeks back by an infected user who reverse engineered the code, working with Intego to figure out why he was being re-directed on Google searches. At the time, nobody believed much of anything he was saying, but F-Secure explains it more fullly in this analysis. Note that there is a filter component to keep it from loading code into apps that would be unstable, so watch for the next variant to filter out ppc only apps.
In a related matter, I got word from the PC side of the house that similar techniques are being used by drive-by infections that were injecting code into a running app which would disappear when they quit the app. A one-time infection, so to speak. Makes it really hard to even know you were temporarily infected, let alone how, why, what damage, etc.

  • Airplay icon missing? first time set up

first time setting up apple tv. air play icon missing from my ipad 2, also the remote is controling my mac book. please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Make sure your iPad and Apple TV have the latest software and restart the io ad if necessary.
If you don't want to use a remote with your computer the easiest thing to do is just to turn the IR off. (System_Preferences/Security/General)
If you still want to use your computer remote then you must pair your computers remote with the computer AND the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen (best take the computer into another room, or turn it off, when you do this)

I'am a first time mac user, can any explain to me how to transfer file i.e. iTunes ,pictures, other files.

Select a file you want to transfer and drag it to the desired destination.
If you need help with the basics of OS X you can:
Select Mac Help (or Help Center) from the Finder's Help menu and enter a search keyword. For your question you might search for "copy," "file copy," or "drag and drop" for example.
    See Apple - Support - Mac 101
Visit the Apple website where you will find additional information and tutorials on how to use OS X.

  • When I set up a guest network on my time capsule nothing can not connect to this network

I have an airport time capsule and I set up a guest network on it. This network is visible, but I can not connect to this using my mac, windows lap tops iPhone and samsung galaxy note 4.

Actually the TC is the main router, but the problem is when I put this on NAT DHCP mode
The device that you call your "modem" is very likely a modem/router or gateway type of device that combines both the functions of a modem and router in one package.
The Guest Network feature will only work correctly when the TC connects to a pure modem.....not a modem/router or gateway.
To see if this is really your problem, please post back with the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem" so we can see exactly what you have.

I was setting up my IPod Nano7 for the first time and purchased 3 songs.  When I went to play it on my IPod the screen said "No Music".  What did I do wrong?

We are going through same thing and looks like alot of other people also. Seems to me Apple would have invalid email instead of us loosing the gift card all together. Very irratating. Good Luck.

  • Remote Desktop Connection Times Out With "Can't Connect" From One Specific Computer Only

This is an odd one... I manage several servers from this computer. This particular server, 2012 Essentials, won't allow for remote desktop connections to either the server or attached workstations. I can get into the server's remote web page but when I
attempt a remote desktop connection, it hangs on "Initiating remote connection..." and then times out with the error response that remote desktop can't connect. But... if I attempt the same connections from any other computer, I am able to get in
and utilize remote desktop. Does this mean that there is a certificate issue with the computer unable to connect and if so, how does one remedy this? Or is it some other issue? I've attempted everything within my technical ability to no avail. Any suggestions
    are greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Before going further, would you please let me know the RDC version that used in the problematic computer? Was it the same with other computers?
Please temporarily disable firewall and then check if this issue can be solved. Based on your current description, it’s hard to say the root reason of this issue.
So, I suggest that you should check relevant log files and get some clues. It will help us to narrow down and solve your issue.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

When I open a received e-mail the first time, German umlauts (ä, ö, ü) are not shown correctly. Instead of them there are characters like §,$. When I close the e-mails and open them again the German umlauts are shown correctly. I don't know how to solve that problem. Who can help me?

Fascinating. Sounds like an inconsistency between the encoding being used and the encoding being declared. I can't think why it should change when you re-open the message, unless Thunderbird is adding a correct encoding declaration.
(Most users complain about it working in the opposite direction; messages stored as drafts often restore with damaged "special" characters such as smart quotes, accented characters and umlauts.)

  • Yesterday for the first time that I can remember that I ran into massive lags on a 720p video I was watching on a website, was my Macbook overheating?

I'd owned my Macbook for about a year and it's a Macbook 2009 mid model 2.13ghz and I ran into a weird bug yesterday. I had Xat chatroom open which is a flash chatroom and Cinemassacre Angry Video Game Nerd video open yesterday and I heard my fan running loud and non-stop. While I was watching the video the video was showing up like still images instead of in motion. Does that mean my Macbook was overheating if it was turning Video Motion into still images? I shut down my Macbook and started it back up. I hope its not linked to my ssd harddrive. Also, this is the first time I think I ran into this bug. When I'm laying in bed I have my Macbook resting on a dresser desk like a flat piece of wood because I think thats better for ventilation than it would be to just laying on my bed. I might have had my Macbook on for 5-7 hours with nosleep(a program to stop the macbook from sleeping) on. Could that have caused some problems?

Always make sure the ventialation slots are never covered otherwise it can overheat.
