Snow Leopard screws up my entire network!

We are all familiar with the idiotic way of Apple handling the problems with AirPort internet access, but what happened to me today beats all problems I have read here.
Since updating to 10.5.8 and now through 10.6.2 AirPort quality has steadily gone lower and lower. I started having trouble connecting to more and more APs but still I lived in hope Apple would do something about their screwup. No such luck I guess.
So here is my newest situation:
My home network consists of a "ZTE ZXDSL-531B" wireless modem to which a Desktop PC (LAN cable, running XP), a PC laptop running Vista, my iPhone and my MBP running XP in BootCamp connect flawlessly.
However when I try to connect in 10.6.2, I have internet access for about 5 seconds an then, except for skype absolutely every device stops having internet. I tried connecting the MBP straight via cable but same result. Ping to the modem works even after internet stops. I have tried changing the location, deleting the System configuration folder and reseting the PRAM and NVRAM. I also tried using WEP, WPA, WPA2, static IP, unsecured WiFi. Nothing helped.
Obviously this is a SL problem since even with 10.5.8 this problem did not exist.
It's about time Apple stopped sitting on their *****, ruining their customers' holidays, and fixed this **** Airport Issue! Since I updated to SL I am seriously thinking of going back to Windows. This is how frustrated I feel, yes.

Sorry for ranting like this. I hope you understand that people who pay the premium price for using Apple's products expect the high quality that is supposed to come with that price. Obviously there are problems with the Airport cards or their software and this issues have even made a reputation for themselves.
Now to the point.
I found a way to fix the issue, which was that the modem kept losing its DNS settings, even if I entered them manually in it. So I entered all the settings (like IP, Gateway, DNS etc.) manually in the Network Settings on the MBP. This fixed the problem.
I know this probably has something to do with a bad modem, but I still don't understand why the problem occurs only when I connect in SL, and not in Windows, or the iPhone OS.
If the moderators think this topic is redundant, please feel free to delete it.
Thank you.

I downloaded Mountain Lion from being on Snow Leopard and lost my entire Office 2004 suite, including Entourage which was my main email server. If I download Office 2008, will I retrieve all my lost Entourage email folders?
    Other options?

It's not that simple. You didn't lose your Office 2004 suite. Office 2004 won't run in Mountain Lion. You need to update your Office software. You need to purchase either Office 2008 or 2011. Either one can run in Mountain Lion.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6 has downgraded networking speed

I have 3 computers on my 100% wired Gigabit network at home. All 3 computers are connected to the same router.
1 is a linux machine, 1 is a Macbook (C2D 2.4GHz 4MB RAM) running Leopard 10.5.8, and 1 is my iMac (C2D 2.4GHz 4MB RAM) running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. Both iMac and Macbook have identical specs and RAM, only difference is one is running 10.5.8 and one is running 10.6.1.
Prior to upgrading my iMac to SL, I'd consistently get between 10-20Mbps download result using dslreport.com speedtests. I'm on Comcast. Now after upgrading to SL on the iMac, I can only achieve around 2.5Mbps maximum speed test results. I performed this test 5x over several days to make sure there wasn't some coincidental anomaly. As a test I performed the same speed test on the Macbook and it indeed hit above 15Mbps speed result consistently 5x in a row and over several days. My linux machine also achieves the same 15+Mbps speed result.
I've tried tweaking the iMac's SL network settings, but nothing helps. What has happened in SL to degrade network throughput? I can clearly and consistently reproduce this issue.

Aha! I've found the problem. Its the Flash 8 speed test that is the problem on SL. When performing the same speed test using the Java speed test, I achieve the 15+Mbps download speeds.
    Flash 8 speedtest
    Sun Java plugin speedtest
I've done the test 5 times in a row and I get the same results form each respective speedtest type.
So the problem is what is wrong with Flash on Snow Leopard?

  • Snow Leopard screwed up my iMovie 6 project, any fixes?

I have an hour long iMovie 6 project, video and still clips. Just installed Snow Leopard. The movie clips appear to work fine, but the still photos are all screwed up. The timeline viewer is not coordinated with the still clips and there is no way to accurately adjust the timing on such clips. I saved my HD Mac with time machine prior to installing Snow Leopard. Can I bring it back with the old operating system so I can finish my project?

I am UN-ABLE to make iMovie 06 and Snow Leopard fail in any way.
Forget any hope of a bug fix.
They will if you ask (trust me).

Apple isn't going to update a many years old program they no longer sell to work with brand new OS.
Most owners of iLife 09 I know, are using iMovie 06 with iDVD 09.

  • Snow Leopard Screws Up iWeb Fonts

Immediately after I installed Snow Leopard, I began having font spacing problems in iWeb. There's now a lot of space before each line of text that wasn't there before. Essentially, Snow Leopard is adding a bunch of "leading" to each line. HELP!!!!!

  • Mac Mini Snow Leopard "headless" on my home network suddenly responds very slowly.

I run a Mac Mini "headless" (no screen or keyboard) on my home network.  It has run perfectly until now.  Last week I experimentally tried the newer version of Chicken of the VNC (usual access with Screen Sharing.  Since then, responses have become so slow that it is almost unusable although everything else seems to be running fine.
    Any ideas?

    Hi John,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Sharing a Calendar from Mountain Lion server with Snow Leopard users on local network

    Hello.
I have a new Mac Mini Server running Mountain Lion Server and I want to create a shared calender for a mix of Lion, Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard users on our local network. Does anyone have any info on how to do this? I have tried using the Server App and Calender Help within the applications, but the content isn't available. I have managed to create a Shared Calender  from the Mini's Calendar App where I've  added users and I can see a 'wireless' transmit icon to the right of the Calendar name - but I cant get any of the users' iCal or Calendar apps to recognise the Calendar on the local network. I've also created a Location in the Server App under Calendar and still can't see anything on the local network. Am I missing something really obvious?
    Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I hadn't explained everything fully. I don't want to open up my VPN to friends and family. I do have the router assigning the NAS a fixed IP, so that when I connect over the VPN I can use the local IP address to connect, as you have mentioned.
What I would like is for my friends or family to connect to my server over AFP or SMB using the public IP of my network, which my router then forwards onto my server, and display the available sharepoints configured using Mountain Lion server. However, the NAS drive is not an available option this way as it has a separate IP to the server.
As the NAS alllows guest access, I also don't want to configure the router to forward a specific port to it, as this way it will be open to the internet. I wanted to try and use my server as an authentication point, with profiles set using Mountain Lion server, and limited to file sharing services only.
    Hope this makes sense.

  • Snow Leopard networking conundrum.

I'm new to Snow Leopard but I've been networking my various Macs since System 7, and every upgraded OS has brought its new challenges; this one is no exception. I have my older desktop with two drives (One called Tiger, one called Panther, for obvious reasons), each holding files I want to access from my Snow Leopard MacBook. Shortly after upgrading, I managed this, much as ever before in earlier OSs: Picked the desired drive, logged on as Registered User and so on. At that time the Connect window gave me both drives and User names as options, just as in earlier OSX versions.
But that's suddenly changed; now, whether I Browse for servers (Command-K) or use the Network icon(Shift Command K) all I get as options are the User accounts—badged as if they were removeable volumes—but the drives themselves are not visible. However, the overall computer does show in the Network window, but double clicking it only gives the same User/volumes as the Connect to server… window.
By sitting at the desktop, and opening its Sharing preference pane I discovered that "…other users can connect to your computer at  <its name>.local", and sure enough, typing that into the Connect to server window did the trick, revealing the two drives as connection options (along with just one of the seven available Users) Then all I had to do was figure out how to get the drives into the Favorite servers window for the future.
So I solved my problem, but I don't for the life of me understand what's going on, or how it's supposed to work. Nor why it has worked one way before, and another recently. Can any one shed any light?

A bootable clone is a copy of the system disk that if made properly will boot your Mac in the exact same manner as the original system disk. I know of two applications that are capable of making bootable clones. They are CCC or SuperDuper. I use SD.
You need an external drive to point the application at in order for it to make the bootable clone.
In order to test the clone, hold down the option key while booting. This should bring up all of the bootable devices that the Mac finds. Select the devices with the clone and allow the Mac to boot. If it does you can then proceed to the upgrade knowing that anything goes wrong a working system is only a reboot away. I know that always give my warm fuzzy feelings at upgrade time.

  • Can the new Mac Mini boot Snow Leopard from an external hard drive?

I currently boot my 2009 Mac Mini from a FW800 external drive with 10.6.8. If I just plug my external drive into a new 2011 Mac Mini, will it boot into Snow Leopard if I set it as the startup disk or will I get a kernel panic?

I bought a 2011 Mac Mini, which came with Lion installed. I thought maybe I could repartition it and have a Snow Leopard partition. So I repartitioned it (500gb split into two 250gb partitions). I named the new partition "SnowLeopard" just to make it easy for me to tell the difference.
I attached the external DVD and put in a Snow Leopard installer disc, holding down the C key so it would boot and install from that, but it just spun for awhile. Doesn't appear to work.
Then I read somewhere else that someone had managed to clone a copy of Snow Leopard onto an external drive and boot from that. In their situation they were talking about a MacBook, but the principle seemed sane.
So I rebooted, holding down the T key to put the Mac Mini into Target hard disk mode, and attached it via Firewire to another MacMini (circa 2008 or so, not sure of year, but it was upgraded last year to Snow Leopard and has been upgraded along and along). Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Snow Leopard (that is, the entire hard disk-- System and all applications and data) to my newer Mac Mini's "snow leopard" partition.
For yucks, when it was done cloning, I restarted the older Mac Mini, and had it boot from the newer Mac Mini's snow leopard partition--- it worked! To make it easy to tell the difference, I changed the desktop background to something completely different. I think I tried booting from Lion but I can't remember if that worked.
Then I rebooted the newer Mac Mini, which booted up in Lion, of course. Going into System Settings, I changed the startup disk to the "snow leopard" partition, and rebooted, and it booted up in Snow Leopard.
I have yet to test the applications on the Snow Leopard partition. Another problem has arisen.
Because with both of the Mac MInis being active on the network, they both had the same computer and user name. So I renamed the newer Mac Mini to something completely different, and changed the password.
Unfortunately, now I cannot change any other setting in the System Settings that requires a password. While the newer Snow Leopard lets me log in with the new user and new password, whenever I try to click the "lock" icon to change something, I'm prompted for a username and password. Apparently this is some different username and password than either the new or old username/password.
I've tried various combinations of both: new user/old password, old user/new password, old user/old password, etc.
So if you do what I've done, be careful about changing the username and password on your cloned computer. I think it may be wiser to create a new user and then delete the old cloned users. I may just have to re-clone the old Mac Mini to the new one again.
If anyone has any ideas about this password conundrum, please pass along!

  • Question about changing a Snow Leopard Server network settings

We have an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8, the primary services running on it are afp, smb, dhcp, dns, jabber and the calendar sever.
Right now we have a router connecting two networks together, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24. The Xserve has a static IP address in the 192.168.0.0/24 range.
In order to combine two phone systems into one I am required to combine the above networks, this will involve removing the router and changing the subnet mask on every device from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0, any device that is currently part of the 192.168.1.0/24 network will also need to have it's router setting changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1. That part should all be easy.
However, this is my first experience expanding a network past a standard class C and am wondering if there is anything I need to watch for on my Snow Leopard Sever.
Specifically I wonder about dhcp settings, right now there are two dhcp servers, the Xserve which provides dhcp for 192.168.0.0/24 and the router that provides dhcp for 192.168.1.0/24. Once the router is removed the Xserve will need to provide dhcp for the entire network.
Looking at the Xserve dhcp configuration right now I have one subnet defined providing addresses 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125.
Can I simply click the + to add another subnet and add for instance a range of 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.125?
Will it simply give out all of the ip addresses in the first range and then start with the 2nd? Or do I need to find a single range of ip addresses large enough to meet my needs? (e.g. 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.225 or something).
Is there anythign else to watch for after making this type of network setting change?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your very detailed reply.
I understand the problems that can arise using 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x and if this were a new project I would definitely switch to something else, however in this case we have been using these ip ranges for years (they were in use here long before I started) and I don't want to have to redo all of my dns settings at the same time I make these other changes so I'm going to stick with the same ip's we are using at least for now. Anyone here needing vpn access has already dealt with this issue but we  have very few vpn users so it has not been a major problem for us to date.
My biggest question is about increasing the size of the dhcp pool. For instance, after I change all the network settings and set up a /23 network is it possible to have a single dhcp pool that includes some ip's in the 192.168.0.x range and others in the 192.168.1.x range? I guess what I am asking is when I am in Server Admin and click on DHCP one of the tabs across the top is "Subnets". Right now there is a single "subnet" configured that provides addresses from 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125.
Ideally I would like one dhcp pool that provides ip's in the range of 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125 and then if all of those are used up, moves to 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.125. Can I do that by simply adding another "Subnet"  so there are two? Or do I have to find one larger single range? (e.g. 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.225?) You may have already answered this indicating I have to have a single larger range but I just want to be sure.
The parts about changing subnet masks, and routers and all that I think I have a pretty good understanding of.
Your last paragraph is something I have been worried about, I do have a feeling that after making this change there will probably be unforseen issues that will need to be resolved, I'm just hoping it is not too many. For the scope of this thread I will just focus on issues that may arise with the Snow Leopard Server however.
Again, thank you for your help.

  • Snow Leopard Samsung ML-1630 Crashes entire system - what's wrong?

The printer will print, but the entire system crashes and the Mac Mini reboots each time a print job is sent. The forum points out a lot of problems with printers and the Snow Leopard upgrade, but no real help seems to have been offered.
I did download the new Samsung drivers recommended for snow leopard using the Apple link
I have removed and reinstalled the printer, several times
What's wrong? Did Apple test this before they launched the new software?
I bought the printer from an Apple store, I hope they support it still.

I agree with William on this. I use the same printer with just native OSx support.
There is one possible issue. The power that the printer draws when printing is pretty significant. My UPS (AVR) kicks in every time I print there. I do have many devices on this circuit though.
It is possible that your voltage is being pulled so low that your machine is rebooting.
If possible try the printer on a different circuit or turn off as much as possible equipment on the same circuit and give it a try.

  • How to resolve network issue or dns to access web page on snow leopard server?

I have my network setup like as follows:
    internet > router 1 > ethernet ports > switch > router 2
I have a mac osx snow leopard server connected to "router 1", but it is so slow when accessing a web page hosted on the server from a browser on a workstation connected to either router 1 or router 2?
Is there a problem with my network setup or maybe because I changed the name to newservername.local?

    @Jeff and @Camelot,
I think it is a DNS issue.  I completely reset the DNS settings on server and the local name with the steps below, but now cannot access the site hosted on the server at all
I used a modified version of http://www.mkahn.com/2010/09/configuring-dns-on-mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-serve r-for-hosting/ to reset the server set
    1.  Stop DNS Service in Server Admin
    2.  Close Server Admin
    3.  Obtain 10.6 DNS Default files (below)
    4.  Overwrite the DNS files with DNS Default files:
    /etc/dns/loggingOptions.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/options.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple
    /var/named/named.ca/etc/named.conf
    /var/named/named.local
    /var/named/localhost.zone
    5. Restart your server
All machines have 1ms ping responses within the network including this snow leopard server that I am trying to setup.  There is another test web server that return pages instantly within this network so I doubt it is a network issue, but a DNS issue.

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • All 30 minutes my Macs (iMac/Snow Leopard, MacMini/Lion) are loosing the connection to the Windows Servers (2 Networks: Home with Home Server 2011 (Server 2008) and Office with Home Server V1 (Server 2003)).

    Hallo,
    Hello,
I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
The particular "configuration" is as follows:
    - Apple MacMini (Late 2011, as HTPC) with Lion via wifi via AVM Fritzbox 7390 to Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008).
    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, desktop PC) with Snow Leopard by Lan on AVM Fritzbox 7270 on Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
All operating systems on current conditions with all patches and updates.
The Fritz boxes running with the latest firmware
    Now to the problem:
Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

Hi, and thank you for your reply!
My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

I have a network user that is trying to open Apple Mail on a mini running Lion 10.7.1 for the first time.  This user previously used a mini that is running Snow Leopard.  Apple Mail is trying to perform an import I assume because Apple Mail 5 on the Lion is different then the version running on Snow Leopard?  The import fails and says to press Continue to allow the Migration Assistant to create a new library.  When we do this, the system responds that the Mail Index is damaged, to quit and reopen Mail so it can be repaired.  We get the same set of messages when we close and go back into Mail.

I read some of the discussions and tried removing all of the contents of the V2-Temp file, but this creates the same result.

When I access the console logs, here is what I saw:
10/18/11 12:23:01.647 PM Mail: Upgrade failed because of exception: Could not move /Network/Servers/server.aigtechnologies.net/Volumes/Data/Users/javier/Library/M ail/V2-Temp.noindex to /Network/Servers/server.aigtechnologies.net/Volumes/Data/Users/javier/Library/M ail/V2; ERROR: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=513 "“V2-Temp.noindex” couldn’t be moved because you don’t have permission to access “Mail”." UserInfo=0x7fec021161b0 {NSUserStringVariant=(

    ), NSDestinationFilePath=/Network/Servers/server.aigtechnologies.net/Volumes/Data/ Users/javier/Library/Mail/V2, NSFilePath=/Network/Servers/server.aigtechnologies.net/Volumes/Data/Users/javie r/Library/Mail/V2-Temp.noindex, NSUnderlyingError=0x7fec021144b0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. Permission denied"}
My interpretation of this message is that either the ACL or POSIX permissions are not set correctly for the user.  When I log into Server Admin and check this though, ACL is set to allow Full Control for the user's folder and all children folders.  The POSIX is set to Read&Write for the user's folder and all of the children files.
I read some of the discussions and tried removing all of the contents of the V2-Temp file, but this creates the same result.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
