Software Switcher with FMLE and FMIS

Hello Readers,
I wanted to know if there is any facility to use Software Switchers along with FMIS
The Situation: I am streaming multiple streams using FMLE from one place and at the receivers end, the client receives only of the streams at a time.
So I wanted to apply switcher so as, I could stream only one stream from FMLE at one time
I have explained the scenario in the attached image.

I don't think there are any software switchers as you have described (at least, none that I've seen). If the switcher is between FMLE and FMS, the switcher needs to be able to receive RTMP connection from FMLE, and make an RTMP connection to FMS.
That said, you can achieve what you described with actionscript. The switcher (as in your diagram) would be the FMS application. Each FMLE would publish a stream to the FMS app, and you'd write server side methods to select the FMLE stream to show. Your FMS code would play the selected stream over a server side stream, which your clients would subscribe to.

Problems with FMLE and WebcamMax

     So to start it off, what I'm trying to do is to create a live video game stream of Starcraft 2 on Justiv.tv. I have downloaded FMLE 3.2 as well as WebcamMax because on top of the Starcraft 2 video game stream I would like to have my webcam of myself picture-in-picture in a small corner of the screen. I chose WebcamMax because I know that it can do these things. However, after I set WebcamMax to my desired settings, when I start up FMLE and select my "device" to stream through, it says "Problem with video capture device. Please verify that the video capture device is working correctly and is not already in use. I cannot figure out what this is actually telling me to do. I've tried it with and without WebcamMax running but it just won't work.
     On top of this problem, I encountered another problem when I tried using VHscreen capture with FMLE. I planned on doing the same thing and everything worked out up until I was actually streaming live. I am using a Turtle Beach Headset with a microphone on it and when I started streaming, I could only hear either the sound from the game or the sound from my mic. After adjusting many settings I could hear the sound from the game and a feint noise from my mic. I understand you have to set your sound options to "stereo mix" in order to get both audio sources however this didn't seem to work at all. Anyway, I switch from VHscreen capture to WebcamMax to see if switching programs would solve my audio problem but I ended up just developing another one.
     I'm running Windows 7 64x with very strong system behind it (core i5, 4gb ram, gtx470). If anyone could solve these problems for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Please attach the session log. Run 3.0 on the same isolated station and see if the error comes.
And if possible, run 3.1 on any one of 5 working stations to reproduce the error.

Peer-Switch with vPC and non-vPC Vlan Port-Channels

Hi,
in a design guide i have noticed that it is best practice to split vPC and non-vPC vlans on different inter-switch port-channels. Now, if i want to use the Peer-Switch function, but the port-channel interface of the non-vPC-vlan channel moves into blocking state. The option spanning-tree pseudo-information has no influence. Is peer-switch possible in my kind of topology?

I believe absolutly possible. specifically coz peer-switch and spt pseudo-info are specific and local to cisco fabric services running as part of vpc technology. Personally me has lab with vpc-domain compounded of 2 N5Ks. They are peer-switches with spt-pseudoinfo and they have MST running on non VPC links independantly from vpc.

Need help with setting up a stream with FMLE and FMS

I'm new to this stuff, so i would love if you could guide me, and/or tell me if what i'm trying to do is even possible.
This is what i'm trying to do:
I am currently working on a project for Narvik University College in Norway. We are experimenting with remote control of some lab equipment. We want to stream live video from the lab for the students to see.
So..
I want to set up a stream from my webcam that can be accessed through a webpage by anyone (with minimal delay)
This is what i understand i have to do:
Use FMLE to connect to the webcam, and connect FMLE to FMS, and somehow get this out on my webpage.
It's the Flash Media Server bit i don't understand. How do i go about to get this out on my webpage? Do I have to use a Flash Streaming service like Onyxservers to do this, or can i do this part myself? If yes, how complicated is this?

OK, i have now managed to set up the Flash Media Server and made a simple flash application that shows the stream.
But now, everything is local, and if i want to embed the stream on the webpage, i guess it can't be local.
The source in the flash application is "rtmp://localhost/live/livestream" and shows the webcam when i open the .html file (with the flash video embedded) on this computer. What should the source look like when i embed the flash file in a webpage that is not on this computer?

Can I create a single captivate 7 software demo with captions and have multiple languages versions

First Timer here; we are a small but global company and we would like to create training videos for our worldwide customers. What we want is to create a video once with English captions and then use the exact same video over and over but changing the language to German, Spanish, French and more each time we save it.
Example: we create a video demonstrating how to perform a specific task and save it in English. Then, before we close this "English" file, we would like to save it in German, then save it again in French, etc. The idea is not to have to open the software and repeat the "click-by-click" action for each language; just perform the software navigation once but somehow change the language displayed in the caption balloons for each language.

Hi there
Certainly you will be able to click File > Save As and save as all the different languages.
After you do that, you need to open each respective file and click File > Export > Project Captions and Closed Captions. This action should create a Microsoft Word document that may then be opened and translated. Then it's saved back and you click File > Import > Project Captions and Closed Captions to change the verbiage to the desired language.

Two srw switches with vlans and pfsense gatway

Hi,
I've got a bit of a problem that a can't seem to get a handle of things.
I've got two srw 48 port switches that I would like to link together and then on to the pfsense box.
First I'd like to connect the two switches to see if everything works and then on connect the pfsense box.
Now I would be very great full if someone with a bit more experience with VLANs would be so kind to walk me trough the procedure of creating VLANs, configuring them to ports on the switch and connecting the whole thing to another switch.
This is what I've done so fare.
1. I created 3 VLANs on both switches (VLAN2-office,VLAN3-WiFi, VLAN5-VoIP). I've created these VLANs with the same tags on all the devices.
2. I configured the ports that connect the switches as trunk. (I can't seem to be able to configure anything else on this port. Is there something else I should configure on these ports?)
Now as fare as I understand the documentation the VLANs on each switch should now see each other.
I'm still not sure on how to configure a physical port to one VLAN. After creating the VLANs on both switches and connecting them trough the trunk port I set ports 10-20 to VLAN2 by going to VLAN Management -> Ports to VLAN I selected VLAN2 and marked ports general and untagged and saved the settings. I repeated the procedure on the other switch. Now if I stuck my network cable into one of this ports I didn't get an IP anymore form the DHCP witch means that they were on a different VLAN than the other ports so I setup another router to act as a test DHCP with a different IP range as the main DHCPto see if it works. Now when I connectedthe test router to one of the ports in VLAN2 and my PC to the same VLAN2 port I got the test IP no problem. But when I connected the PC to the other switch VLAN2 port nothing happened until I connected the test DHCP to one of the VLAN2 ports. So clearly the switch VLANs are not communicating.
Now I don't know did I forget something, made a mistake with some setting or I just don't know what I'm doing because I think I need to get the VLANs between switches working before tackling the pfsense connection.
I would be really great full if someone explains to me how to set these VLANs up so that they would work between switches.

I was successful and I did exactly that. I put all VLANs on trunk ports and the switch to switch to pfSense started to work.
The only thing that gave me some problems was the end port(port connecting to the device pc, phone, printer) configuration. I was under the impression that the port was supposed to be in general mode and tagged. But I figured out that the port is supposed to be in access mode and untagged and only a member of one VLAN(the one I wanted it to connect to).
Anyway all is working now and I've figured out all the kinks.

What is the best mail server software, compatible with G5 and OS X 10.5.8?

Hello.
I want to install/set up a mailserver on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
It will host approximately 35users, should have pop, imap, spam protection, webmail/admin interface, routing feature, all the usual stuff, I'm doing this because we often have to recieve very large files and having a mailserver on local network makes working with them so much faster. What would you recommend?

There isn't enough data in your post to create an informed answer.
For one, are you talking Mac OS X client, or Server?
Mac OS X Server already includes all the various mail server components you talk about, and it's based on Postfix, one of the most popular open source mail servers around.
Secondly, having your own mail server will only be 'so much faster' for local users sending/receiving local mail (i.e. from users on the same network). Every other email has to go out (or come in) over your office internet connection and having your own mail server doesn't change that one bit.
At that point, if you're only talking local users, it sounds like what you want is a file server, not a mail server. Mail is not designed for large file transfers.
Third, even if you don't want Mac OS X Server's solution, and you can deal with the bandwidth, you haven't mentioned cost - what's your budget here. You won't find a free/open source solution that's more complete and easier to use than Apple's bundle, so now you're into the commerical offerings. All of them charge, typically per user and some of them (as already mentioned) are mothballing their PPC support, meaning any invenstment in their option might be short-lived.
So I think you need to better state your goals and ideals before you can find the 'best' solution (if any of them are really 'better' than any other).

Desktop publishing software compatible with windows and mac?

I am trying to help the kids at my daughter's school produce their own newspaper.
Apart from Word (which I can't get to do what I want!) is there anything out there compatible with both operating systems. The school PCs have MS Publisher 2003 installed. I am working on a mac using Quark and InDesign. I created the last newspaper for them but I'd like the kids to get more involved if possible and enable them to have some input when it comes to creating it. Other than having to do it myself or even worse invite 60 kids into my home is there anything out there?!!!

if you use QuarkXPress 7 or 8, you can actually legally install/activate *the same* license *on two* machines, even cross-platform. You are just allowed to use one installation concurrently.
So you could test it on Windows and if the student like it, a student copy is extremely cheap.

Stacking 3750 switches with EMI and SMI versions

Is it possible to have in a stack Catalyst 3750 with EMI version and Catalyst 3750 with SMI?. In my case, it is a WS-C3750G-12S-E with WS-C3750-48PS-S. I didn't find clear information about this issue. I know different major releases are not compatible but nothing is mentioned about the feature set.

Hi,
It's possible but not recommended. If you decide to do this you should buy 2 EMI so that if the master fails the backup can still route traffic. (Having 2 EMI is TAC supported, even if the rest is SMI - not sure about just having one EMI and one SMI)

Streaming HD with FMLE?

I am using FMLE (for mac) with watershed ustream service and they claim that you can output HD to the web using FMLE. I am fairly new to the world of video streaming and don't entirely understand all of the codecs and what not, but is there somewhere where I can learn a little more about streaming this in High Definition?
My camera that I will be using is an HD (production quality) camera so that camera is not an issue.
I am also going from camera to camtwist then FMLE then the server
I'm using CamTwist because its free and allows me to switch between desktop view and live video camera easily.

That test happened to be with a Tricaster switcher with FMLE inside of it. The 4-5Mbps was average which means spikes would be higher but in later analysis of the archive files from the Tricaster we see that it was 720p60 and that COULD explain why the average was so high. What I would expect to see from FMLE is an average around 2 to 3Mbps but spikes up to 5Mbps. We are running further tests on native FMLE (not in the Tricaster switcher) now that it has Blackmagic capture card support and you are free to contact me for those results once we finish our analysis ([email protected]). Also, I do not want to diss FMLE or Adobe because FMLE does provide a very valuable low cost component in the ecosystem that Adobe has built around Flash Media Server and that ecosystem is what makes the Flash video platform viable for all of us to use - both customers and vendors like Kulabyte.
Regarding the content, it was typical content we use for testing with both easy and difficult to encode video. Regarding the FMLE settings, they were the standard settings for FMLE in the Tricaster switcher. We no longer have the switcher, but even so it wouldn't be right to distribute that data as it belongs to Newtek.
I want to get back to the question about whether the bitrate was average or spikes, however, because this is the most critical issue for live streaming.   The point I will make below is that for live streaming, constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding is an absolute must and FMLE does not do constant-bitrate; it only does variable bitrate (VBR). The way we know this is from observation and also knowing that FMLE uses MainConcept's H.264 Standard codec which does not support CBR. Kulabyte's XStream Live 2, on the otherhand, uses MainConcept's H.264 Professional codec which does support CBR. See http://www.mainconcept.com/products/sdks/video/h264avc.html for more details.
Now, consider the variation in internet connections among all of the people watching your stream. First, everyone in your audience will not have the same download bandwidth on their internet connection. Some may have 1.5Mbps, others will have 10Mbps on fiber, and most in the U.S. will fall in the 2Mbps to 5Mbps range. For this reason, to insure the best possible user experience with a broad audience such as this, you really need to have multiple streams available to the viewer including maybe a 2Mb stream, a 1.2Mb stream, a 750Kb stream, and a 200-300Kb stream for mobile and and then you should use dynamic or adaptive streaming supported by FMS 3.5 with the major CDN's so that the player will negotiate with the FMS server and choose the best stream for that viewer's download bandwidth.
Next, consider the path the stream must go from the encoder to the player computer. First from the encoder to the FMS entry point, then from the entry point to an edge server, and then from the edge server to the audience members player. With a good CDN, the bandwidth between the entry point FMS server and edge FMS server is huge so we can ignore that piece of the path.
Before diving into the upload bandwidth from the encoder and download bandwidth to the player computer, let's estimate how much bandwidth is needed. For sake of argument, let's assume that FMLE has a 50% swing in bitrate from the average. Kulabyte's XStream Live's actual bitrate swing is typically about 5-8%, but well assume 10% to be generous. Next, let's assume (I think this is pretty safe) FMLE's average bitrate is about 50% higher than XStream Live 2's average bitrate for the same video quality (due to other differences between the MainConcept codec and other optimizations done by Kulabyte). Now let's calculate the bandwidth needed for the streams I mentioned above.

Now back to the path the stream takes. If you are streaming from a fixed location where you can get fiber and a solid 10Mbps uplink, then you will be able to send the three streams noted above from your encoder to the FMS entry point. However, if you can only get a solid 5Mbps uplink (like business class cable modem), what you will see with the FMLE encoder is that every time the video is a bit challenging and it swings to the high side of its bitrate, your video is not going to get to the FMS entry point and everyone down the line will see buffering. If your viewers didn't pay for what their watching, then maybe that's OK but for professional streaming with paid subscribers, this would be unacceptable. If it's not as good as TV, then you will not retain viewers. And, what we find with our streaming customers is that more often than not, getting good uplink bandwidth is very challenging.
Now consider the path from the edge FMS server to the audience member's player on their laptop. With dynamic streaming enabled, the viewer should see the stream most appropriate for their download bandwidth, but at 4.5Mbps for the 720p stream, how many people are going to be able to see that with their home internet connection. Many will only be able to see the 480p at 2.7Mbps and many others will only be able to see the 1.6Mbps stream. I think I mentioned this very early in the thread, but research done by Akamai shows that you will get much better audience retention with 720p versus 480p and, of course, you can not have the video stop for buffering ever. Thus, not having a good constant bitrate stream can bite you both on the uplink side from your encoder, unless you are fortunate enough to be streaming from a location with fiber, and this affects all viewers (i.e. buffering) and it can bite you on the downlink side for your audience because they will not see the quality of video they could see if you had a good constant bitrate and lower average bitrate stream.

Looking for a retail available camera that is compatible with FMLE

I am looking for a retail available camera that is compatible with FMLE. I do not have a computer with HDMI input, and in the past, I have typically ran with a USB connection. Does anyone know of a camera that is available at a local retail store that would work with FMLE through a USB connection?

Webcams will work, although they may not give you the flexibility that you're looking for with a more traditional "camera".
You may be more interested in looking at a converter/digitizer -- something that can take a variety of inputs and pull those into your computer as a a video source that your computer, and FMLE, sees as a "camera".

You'll see a variety of webcams, capture cards, cameras, and other devices that are known to work with FMLE. Most of those solutions, however, require the installation of a card or require that you have Thunderbolt connections or FireWire connections. Not on that list is the Dazzle line of digitizers. I know several people who use Dazzles with FMLE -- and while each one seems to have issues that you have to be aware of, they do work (some better than others). As long as you're aware of the issues, it's not a problem working with these devices -- and they're pretty inexpensive. The Dazzle Video Creator Platinum seems to have the least amount of problems (the only real problem that I'm aware of is that you have to be sure to disable your preview windows in FMLE if you want to make changes to the source settings -- or it will crash FMLE. But, once you get your settings in place you can enable the preview windows again and don't have to worry about it). The great thing about a digitizer is that you can now use any camera that can output to standard composite cables (the yellow, red, and white 'RCA' cables -- or SVideo cable). So your camera selection possabilities increase greatly.
If you're looking for a standalone camera that can deliver a live video feed through USB -- good luck. I'm sure they're out there, but your choices are going to be very limited.
Personally, I use the Canopus ADVC110 -- which allows me to hook up any camera (or even a playback deck/DVR/DVD player, etc.) that can output composite (RCA) or FireWire or S-Video. The ADVC110 will not work for you, as you need FireWire to hook up to your computer, but just in case you do have FireWire I can tell you that it is a stellar box with no issues at all.

During upgrade to ios 7 ipad2 is getting switched off again and again and never starting

I tried to upgrade ipad2 to ios7 ,it could not be completed and therafter the ipad is it seems bricked and randomly will start for few seconds after long pressing on button? what is the reason and solution? i am stuck since 2 months.

Hey rmacbeth, I'm sorry to hear about your iPad troubles. It seems like with every major iOS release, these issues come up on older models (the iPad 3 is relatively new though...weird)
Anyways, it sounds like you've tried everything already and nothing seems to be working. If you're sure that it's a software issue with iOS and has nothing to do with your physical home button, I'd recommend restoring your iPad to factory settings by doing the following:
1. Make a backup of your iPad (just connect it and select the backup option in iTunes)
2. Next, select factory restore. It'll ask you to back up your iPad here if you haven't already.
3. Try quickly setting it up as a new iPad.
4. Try to duplicate the issue with the freezing, just use it for a day and see if it happens at all
5. If everything seeems to be working, restore again except this time, do it from the backup you made earlier
6. Try again to see if the issue comes up by using it normally in a day
7. If it does happen again, take it in to the Apple store to get it looked at as there may be some underlying software issue that a factory restore can't resolve

FMLE and video capture devices

Hi, I have a streaming application that captures camera video
devices and streams using FMS 3.5. Today, I was playing around with
FMLE and it captured the TV cards I have in my computer. I tried my
video object in my Flex app to capture the same TV card that FMLE
captured, but to no avail. Does any one know why the stream from my
TV card is available to FMLE and not to my Flex app video object?

Probably FMLE (whatever that is) has acess to the system in
ways that Flex
doesn't.

FMLE 3.0 works with Black Magic Decklink and Intensity Pro cards on SD sizes only
FMLE 2.5 works with these cards at HD sizes but because of single core support of Resize Filter and VP6 encoder in FMLE 2.5, you will not be able to get desired Output FPS at HD sizes from FMLE 2.5 also.
So if we you are planning to run these cards at SD sizes then you can go for these devices.
These cards are right now not in certified list of devices of FMLE but many people have tried these cards at SD sizes and they worked fine for them at SD sizes.
FMLE 3.0 not supporting BlackMagic HD sizes is a bug
