Software update seemed to quit, so I restarted. No more hard drive?

I know, I know. It was a big mistake. In a moment of weakness and frustration due to other circumstances wearing me thin, I shut my PowerBook off when it had appeared that the spinning beach ball was never going away and it looked like software update was stuck. When I tried to reboot, I got the whirling thing on a gray Apple screen for a reeeally long time, and because I was really bent out of shape (again, dealing with too much other stuff whilst trying to get something else accomplished), I hit the power button another time.
The next thing that happened continues to happen: File folder with blinking question mark.
My PowerBook is acting as though there is no longer a hard drive in it. There was never a grinding noise, or anything unusual prior. Now I just hear the head park and unpark, that intermittent ping-pong ball kinda sound that I used to hear every now and then. Only now it happens three times, then stops, then again.
I have tried going into open firmware and the internal drive is not readable there either. The Open Firmware command for verifying a drive is present does work (can't remember the command) but when you put in dir hd/ it says "cant OPEN the DIR device". I've reset all params, prams, pmu, etc.
I have tried a disk warrior boot-up CD. The internal drive cant be found by the software.
I have tried booting with an external drive, but once up and running, disk utility does not see the internal drive.
I have tried putting it in target mode, hoping my iMac can see the drive in the PowerBook.
No Go.
I'm trying to figure out how a software boo-boo turned into a hardware failure. I can see if there's a corrupted boot sector or something, but for the drive to be present, not grinding, but not be seen by any software is something I'm not understanding.
Any thoughts?

Hi, Eric. A software boo-boo didn't turn into a hardware failure; a hardware failure led you to commit a software boo-boo that, by the time you did it, made no difference at all. Your hard drive failed during the software update, causing the computer to hang. Everything that happened after that was inconsequential. Your actions were unwise, but the damage was already done.
Just replace the hard drive. I hope you had your data backed up. If you didn't, mount the bad drive in an external enclosure and try to recover the data from it using one or another of the following utilities:
Data Rescue II
FileSalvage
VirtualLab
All three come in demo versions that will show you what the full version could recover before you have to pay for anything.

I'm using a macbook pro with version 10.6.8 installed. Whenever I try to install my software updates, it immediately asks me to restart my computer to finish the installation. After doing so and signing back on to my account, nothing has changed and no updates have been installed. It still says the same 8 items need to be installed, and the same process occurs again. Any idea how I can fix this?

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?

I tried to do the update but it reads that I don't have enough hard drive to do the update. How do clear up space on my hard drive to do the upte????

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
    To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.

  • Software update seems to have hung before it even started

I'm fairly new to owning a Mac (newer than an SE) and I a having a problem with Software Update. I can't tell if the system is supposed to work this way (which would be a terrible user experience) or if my system is really screwed.
Software Update always tries to get me to install updates at bad times so I had several updates that were overdue. They were marked as downloaded but they required a restart, so I never did the installation. Today, I remembered to go to software update to update the system. There were 11 updates. I had them all selected and I hit the button to install all 11 items.
My computer has been mostly unresponsive since then. It's been 2 hours. No progress bar has appeared. No configuration message has appeared. The only thing that has happened is that the icon that appears above software update has changed to the swirly rainbow "I'm working" icon.
I tried opening firefox. Nothing happened. I tried opening the activity monitor. The icon now appears in the shortcut bar but the activity monitor never came up. I tried opening the system profiler-- again, the icon now appears in the shortcut bar but nothing ever came up. I can't even scroll up in system update to see which 11 updates I'm installing; I can only see the 8 that were visible when I hit the start button. I even went to "About this mac" and clicked "more info" and the only thing that happened is that the "about this mac" screen disappeared.
The two possibilities seem to be that my system is working as expected (which would, as I said, be a horrible user experience), or that the system is hung.
I am extremely reluctant to shut the computer down in the middle of an update because it could corrupt the system but it's been 2 hours and I haven't gotten a progress bar or a single progress message. I really don't want to do that if this is expected behavior. On the other hand, my computer has been completely unusable for 2 hours and that seems like a ridiculous amount of time to install software that was already downloaded.
The 8 software updates that I can see in the list are:
    iDVD Update 7.0.3
    Digital Camera Raw Compatib... 2.5
    iLife Support
    AirPort Client Update 2009-001 1.0
    Front Row Update 2.1.7
    Safari 3.2.1
    Java for Max OS X 10.5 Update 3 1.0
    Security Update 2009-001 1.0
What's worse is that all of my Mac OSX using friends are asleep so I can't find out from them if this is expected behavior.
Please advise. I don't know if I should try to hard reboot or let it keep trying.

Do you have your data backed up?
    Press this key combination: Commandoptionesc
Since Software update has jammed on you, that might not do anything. What it should do is bring up the "Force Quit" window. If the window doesn't show up within...15 minutes, it probably isn't going to make an appearance.
If you press the power button once, do you get the option to shut down?
If none of that works, hold the power button down till the computer powers off. After that, try booting in Safe Mode (hold the Shift key while booting) and see if the computer boots okay. If so, try booting normally. If a normal boot goes without issues, you can try updating using Software Update again--but do only 1 update at a time and see if it works. If not, let us know and we'll do more troubleshooting.
If the computer won't boot into Safe Mode, try repairing the disk using Disk Utility from the Install DVDs you got with your Mac. Insert Install Disc 1 and reboot the computer while holding down the C key. When the language menu appears, hit enter. Move your cursor to the top portion of the screen--some menus should appear. Choose Utilities, then *Disk Utility*. Highlight your drive's icon in the left-hand column and click the *repair disk* button. If anything can't be repaired, post the complete error here.
Goodness, that's a lot to read. Best of luck to you!

  • Latest imac software update seems to have messed up disk utility

I just performed (as I always do) the latest apple software update that just popped up on my screen. I did the upgrade (for itunes and quicktime) on both my 1.25 GHz G4 imac (system 10.3.9) and my 10.7 GHz G4 (system 10.3.9).
For both machines I ran disk utility within 15 minutes of the upgrade, having performed no other operations. In both cases, Disk utility failed, giving me the message: "disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and launch disk utility."
Relaunch was not effective. I ran disk warrior on both computers and it did not help.
Any clues? Seems like the latest updates must have done something crazy to the software.
    Thanks!

  • Software Update seems to have changed some settings

I recently did a software update on my mac. When I got home later that day I could no longer connect to my ethernet PPPOE connection. When I went to my system preferences and clicked on network, which then opens up the network window that shows you the status of your connection. As soon as this window opens a panel shows up that says, "Your network settings have been changed by another application". No matter how many times I click "OK" the panel keeps flipping down from the top of the window and will not let me proceed.... Any suggestions? If it is unclear what I mean, I have posted a link to a screen shot of what I am trying to explain with words.

  • Apple Software Update doesn't see connected HP printer. Need new driver

I recently installed OS X 10.7 Lion on my MBP, from Mountain Lion. I am working at a remote location and for a while and want to connect to a nearby HP LJ1320 (USB-only) printer. When I connected it, System Preferences detected it, listed the desired driver as "LJ 1320 series" and started a "Finding software" routine. It stopped and said software not found.  When I went to support area of HP site, the offered no direct download link for 10.6-8, but instead steered me to ASU (Apple Software Update) as my driver solution. When I run ASU, I don't get any listing for updated printer drivers, HP or otherwise. I'm lost in an endless do-loop here that leads nowhere. Should I be looking at some open-source driver instead?

Typically that requires a special patch, but those are only provided to certain printers.  I know what's keeping you from being able to install though.  The database on your Mac that tells it what is and isn't compatible is out of date.  What you will need to do is:
Disconnect the printer from the Mac.
    Run Apple Software Updates.
    Restart the Mac.
Once the Mac is back on, connect the printer to it, and add the printer's queue to the list.
That should be all that needs to be done.  Let me know what happens.

  • My finder quits when accessing my Drobo External Hard Drive iMac Dual Core 24"

My Finder Quits Every time I access my External Drobo 8TB Firewire Drive. I have several other FireWire Drives online with it and have no problem with them. This happened soon after the 10.7.2 update. I have a lot of files on this drive. Could it be the number of files that is causing the problem? Is there a Limit onnumber of folders on the surface of a drive? Please help if you can, I am desperate to preserve my software. But I need to do something soon, Or else I will have to just reformat the drive so I can use it again. I don't really want to do that.
Thanks in advance for any comments or cures.

I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps

  • My external hard drive accidentally switched off during Disk Utility's "erase free space" process.  I restarted the external hard drive and Disk Utility, but now I get the "couldn't mount disk" error when trying to finish the erase.  Please help!

My external Lacie Quadra hard drive accidentally switched off in the middle of "erase free space", and when I switched it back on Disk Utility was hanging.  So I Force Quit Disk Utility and restarted it.  Now when I try to erase I get
"Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk."
But "erase free space" seems to work...
What can I do?  I'm erasing as I'm giving the drive to someone else and I wanted to wipe it clean.
Also should I use "erase" or "erase free space" if I want to wipe the drive clean?
    Please help!

Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.
    Thanks!

  • Can't seem to change the permissions on an external hard drive

HEELLLLPPP! We have a Western Digital terabyte hard drive that we initially set up on our Mac. We backed up both my husband's and my iTunes libraries to this hard drive from our individual work PCs, and reconnected to the Mac to do some duplicate file clean up. . . only the durn Drive seems to have it's permissions now locked as read only. Is there a way to re-set the Western Digital permissions on the Mac so that we can truly clean up and delete all duplicate files? We both just spent a combined effort of about 25 hours in iTunes deleting (we THOUGHT) almost 25 gig of duplicates, but when they didn't delete from the hard drive. . .
Repair of this drive in Disk Utility is not available (all options grayed out), we have re-hooked it up to our windows PCs and reset file attributes, security, etc. and given "Full Control" to all users, and it still shows up as Read Only on the Mac.
    Anybody have any ideas?

Select the drive in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu; if it is listed as being in the Windows NT Filesystem, install a software package such as this one onto the Mac.
