Solaris 10 - Changing default screen color depth

Hello,
I just upgraded a Sun Blade from Solaris 8 to 10. I have a rather old image display application (ftp://east.la.asu.edu/pub/software/pw-5.23.tar.gz) that is absolutely essential for my work, and it will not run under Solaris 10, either on the CDE or jave/gnome desktops.
The executable for this application was compiled using gcc on Solaris 8, and ran fine on Solaris 8 CDE (v1.4.3?) with the "Most colors for applications" color setting in Desktop Color prefs. With that setup, the application allocated 216 colors when starting up, which was sufficient. If the application could not allocate enough colors, it would use its own private color map, which caused window "flashing," but that was OK.
Under Solaris 10 CDE (v1.6.3) and gnome, the application cannot allocate enough colors, and cannot even start with its own color map.
I re-complied the application on Solaris 10 using Sun Studio 11, and the same problem occurs with the new executable.
I think that the problem may be related to default color depth. Right now, with xwininfo, my Solaris 10 CDE xterms are 24-bit true color. Unfortunately, I think that I may need to set my default color depth to 8-bit pseudocolor for the application to run. How can I change the default color depth of the CDE and gnome desktops to pseudocolor? I know that the application works on HP-UX CDE with the default depth as pseudocolor.
I cannot remember if I had somehow changed the settings for color depth on Solaris 8 to get the application to run. I do know that the xwininfo results for a Firefox browser window running on my Solaris 8 CDE desktop was 24-bit true color. I hope very much that this will be the case if I change my default depth to 8-bit on Solaris 10.
Any help that anyone can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I am dead in the water without this imaging application. I am a member of the Sun Developer Network, and I don't know if I should post this message somewhere on the Developer Forums. Please let me know if I should.
Thank you in advance!!!!!

Hi,
In my first post there is a link to the code I am talking about. The code is public and available. It was created by Noel Gorelick at ASU. It is based on having an 8-bit Xserver running. There are few users of this code, but I completely agree with you that a new generation of unix-based imaging code needs to be developed that is system and Xserver independent. Optimal code should detect screen depth and open windows with desired color depth automatically, without "flashing.". That way, it could even run under Gnome, which allocates all but 18 8-bit colors for the desktop. Under CDE, the code allocates 224 colors for itself, which is great. The above code will create its own colormap if it cannot allocate enough colors, but there is flashing in that case. Have at it if you wish.
Best regards,
Sparcmaster

You cannot change the colors of the application frames within Photoshop Elements. Some parts of application frames can be changed by your OS display settings.

Changing your SIP domain will effect both Lync 2010 and 2013 (it happens at the top level).
Here is some information on doing this: http://blog.insidelync.com/2013/06/anatomy-of-a-sip-domain-change/
I'd suggest getting it right prior to adding in your Lync 2013 topology, just for the sake of simplicity.
Rather than changing your SIP domain, is simply adding an additional SIP domain an option?

Download and use Screenshots Preference Pane:
    http://www.ego-systems.com/Products/screenshotsprefpane.html
It's free and easy, gives you about a dozen options on how to save the shot and allows you to change where it's saved to.
    I also use Capture Me:
    http://www.chimoosoft.com/captureme.html
Best screen capture utility I've tried, you can save each screen shot in any format you want or have it go. It also works as a great picture sticky because the windows floats above other windows. It's also free,

  • Can I change default tag colors?

I have added other tags which by default have no color; can I edit the default tag colors to add new colors?

Re backward compatibility, I'd understand if it was to avoid removing functionality, but adding functionality (ie the ability to choose more colours) shouldn't be a problem at all should it?
    Yes, here's why:

That 0C bit pattern represents the Red Label. Only three bits in the Finder Info are allotted for the Label color, which means there can be a maximum of seven Label colors (001 through 111, reserving 000for when there’s no Label). Red is color number 6: 0x0C is 1100 in binary, but the last bit is not part of the Label’s bitfield. We’re left with 110, which is 6 in base ten.

  • Ipod touch wont completely turn on, Apple logo then change of screen colors.

Ipod touch 4th generation wont even turn on now. I was updating my ipod touch and then the battery died midway through the process. When i oringally started the update my battery was at 5% so i plugged it in to charge as told, but it still ended up dieing in the update process. Now,  it wont turn on I just get the apple logo, and then the screen eventually changes colors. I was updating to the newest update that just came out.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Change Default Screen Capture Format from PNG to JPG

I'm running Mac OS 10.4.8 on a G5 Duo Core (Power PC). Up until about 10.4.1, my screen captures (Apple-Shift-4) would result in a PDF file. Then they started coming out as PNG files. I would strongly prefer that they default to jpg files, since I typically change the PNG files to JPG.
Can anyone tell me how to change the default for screen captures from PNG format to jpg format?
I have tried to use the process described at http://textsnippets.com/posts/show/131 but this does not change the default format for screen captures. I've also discussed this issue with Apple online help, but they were not able to change the default format either.
    Any suggestions?

  • Why Is Default Screen Color Blue

To be clear - I am not asking about a problem and I only ask this here because I have a MBP but the question is about all screens and since I could not find the answer through Google search and I have huge respect for the many minds here I hope you indulge me and my curiosity.
LCD screens tend to default to a blue color. My TV does this. My MBP gives a blue screen on start up, my PC has a blue screen mode as well. Why is this? An inherent physical characteristic of screens to default to blue, is it an agreed standard, or is it just custom on the part of engineers (although if so then why don't some brands default to another color such as green or red or yellow or gray just to differentiate their product from the competition?
So why do all my Macs use a blue screen at start up as do other electronic devices with screens that I use?

Thanks, and my monitor is CRT. However, this morning when I booted up, my screen is now back to normal, thank goodness. I emailed ZoomPanel which administers the surveys and they said someone would get back to me in 5 business days. Last night after I'd turned off, I thought about going back to the factory setting on my monitor but things were back to normal this morning. In the meantime, I'm staying away from those surveys!

  • Changing default background color in Imovie

How do I change the default mode of the background being black on the sides of a picture in portrait when using Imovie?

It's an excellent resource Karsten - you'll love it. Most people probably assume it's just for presentations, but it has plenty of other uses. I often prepare slides in Keynote for use in an iMovie (or iPhoto) slideshow. Otherwise, you can do the full slideshow in Keynote, using all the animations for titles and transitions between slides. That can also be imported (as a .mov file) to iMovie for further refinement and addition of other media. I use slides with a size of 1280 x 720 - this would suit your method of capturing 720p video for use in iMovie.
You can also add video clips to slides (as many as will fit on a slide). I posted information about this recently in the forum. The poster was wanting to place 2 video clips side-by-side on a black background, with each clip enclosed in a frame - very easily done in Keynote!
Have fun with Keynote (I do).
    John
PS. Here's an example of what I just described. There is a video clip in each frame, but not playing of course:

  • Change default background color in FCE

    I should know this but... I don't.
I'm making a series of short videos to be used in a flash application. I need for the background default color to be pure white so any fade in/out's, etc are always white.
Can anyone tell me how to set this up?
    Thanks

    Thank you.
How do I make the entire background white always? It seems I read something somewhere but can't remember. I have things in the timeline that are transparent and want to have white behind them.
Is there a way to make the background always white?

  • Change default toolbar colors, default interface in PSE8

I do not have good vision and am colorblind. The choice between "dark" and "light" user interface in the PSElements8 Preferences is still not high-contrast enough for my vision: I can't see the menu names and the buttons all fade into the background, even on the "light" setting.
Is there a way to set the toolbar buttons and user interface to monochrome (Black on White) like they were in PS6 and PS7?
Who decided that dark and colored interfaces were user-friendly? Put on your sunglasses and try to use PSE8, and you'll "see" my problem.
    Thanks.

I know it would have been difficult for you but there is no other way...
I would suggest you two try different Resolutions  in case that helps... Also try to switch between System Fonts and Application fonts through Preferences....

  • W500 - switches to 16-bit color depth after disconnecting LCD TV

    Hi guys,
My W500 always changes the screen color depth to 16-bit when I select "Notebook only (factory default)" on Fn+F7 menu, after watching movies on LCD TV. It happens both on Display Port and VGA connector. I have set "separate displays" (no desktop cloning). I remember having the same issue with old T61p. How to prevent that from happening?
    cheers,
