[SOLVED] 64 Bit Install - Wireless / Kernel Issue

Hi All
I decided to install the 64 bit version of Arch from scratch instead of upgrading the existing 32 bit. I downloaded and attempted to install "Arch 2011.08.19 X86_64".
The first problem was that I couldn't get the wireless up and running. I did the usual:
cp /etc/network.d/examples/wireless-wpa /etc/network.d/talktalk
nano /etc/network.d/talktalk
netcfg talktalk
I edited the talktalk file to give it my ESSID etc. and usually when I do an install the network comes straight up, when I use "netcfg talktalk" - but not in this case. I got an error about there were no wireless extensions installed or something similar. I rebooted and noticed an error as the system came up:
b43 - phy0 Error: Found unsupported PHY (Analog 10, Type 8, Revision 1)
Obviously I looked into this and it seems it's a known problem; something to do with a mistake someone made in a unit in the kernel or something like that. A programming error anyway.
I then plugged my laptop straight into the router and installed via the wired connection instead and installed. I still have the problem even after "sudo pacman -Syu" upgrade. From what I've read it seems the way to get around it is to downgrade the kernel - documented here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages - but I don't much like that idea. What happens when I subsequently run an upgrade? It will probably just fall over again right?
Anyone got an alternative solution? I had a look at upgrading to the Testing repo but obviously that has all sorts of potential issues which I don't want to have to spend the time resolving. For the time being I've fallen back to my 32 bit Arch system but it would be nice to know how to resolve the 64 bit issue.
Thanks for any help / suggestions
Rich

The chipset is BCM4313:
[richard@arch ~]$ lspci | grep -i net
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)
I have absolutely no problem at all with Arch 32, it's only with the 64 bit install.

  • [SOLVED] How to install custom kernel from AUR?

I am trying to install the custom kernel for the Acer Aspire One from AUR. What is the correct way to go about doing this? I pacman -U the .pkg.tar.gz I downloaded and it put a new kernel folder in /usr/src. Do I just copy the old .config file and make?

After installing new kernel with pacman -U you  just need to add a new line to grub menu.lst pointing to it and reboot
How would you go about doing this in syslinux instead of grub?

  • [SOLVED][ATI] Driver and/or Kernel Issue?

    Hi all,
I've got a serious issue on my Workstation.
The installation is only a few days old. It's the first Linux Installation on this system. So I don't know if ohter distributions/kernelversions would do it without any issue. I've not tried to install ATI propritary drivers as xorg 1.16 is installed.
    System specs:
    GPU ATI R9 270x
    CPU Intel Haswell i5-4440
    Board MSI H87-G43
    RAM 8 GB Mushkin DDR-3/1333
    Samsung SSD 830
    Problem discription:
The system crahes randomly (after 5 mins. or after an two hours). Screen Blanks. Nothing is available. I had to do a hard reset every time. This happen in all circumstences e. g. Browsing Internet or even if there is nothing done on the computer. In all cases I've got no log-entries.
But the last crash was different: the Display came back after a few minutes (just for the record: I've waited every crash for 10-15 mins. -.-).
    I've got the following log:

The last three lines will repaet for a few minutes with different ADDR and STATUS messages. I've cut the log.
Please help me to fix this. Thanks in advance.

Ironically I've begun to see a very similar problem on my desktop.  My hardware is a bit different:
    GPU: ATI R9 280x
    CPU: AMD Phenom 1100T
    Gigabyte Mobo
    OSS Drivers: Mesa 10.2.6/libdrm 2.4.54

I received the following error last time:

As the message implies, it seems to occur when the kernel changes power states.  In use it does align, as the hard locks tend to occur most frequently in steam or if I encounter rich web content.  I'm beginning to suspect a hardware fault, but I'm going to try disabling DRM and test.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with installing wireless driver (Boradcom)

    Hi!
I am trying to install the driver for my wireless card: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02).
And I found this driver: www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netlink.php, and I'm trying to follow the instructions included in the README, but when i run make, i get this:
    [stian@stian tg3-3.110g]$ make

What does this mean? (Yes I am very new to Arch, and Linux in general, but I want to learn!)
    All help is appreciated!

  • Install SAP Oracle cliente Sw in a Win64 Bit+sql DB+ Kernel 6.2+BW 3.1 Ver

    Hello,
I am trying to find for a while the SAP software that will allow a plataform Win 64 Bit + DB MsSQL+ Kernel 6.20+ BW 3.1 SW installed to make possible by a transaction in BW SAP Logon GUI execute a connection to a Oracle 9i Database external to the BW machine and Software.
The "dbcon" transaction cannot be the one used but the "rsa1" transaction with the configuration of the BD Oracle entry in the tnsnames.ora file existing in the machine where BW is running.
I've download the ORACLE 9i 64 Bit Client from the Oracle site but I still need to install a software that should be a library/Dll wich will allow the SAP kernel 6.20 to interface with the BW software.
Could anyone help me and indicate where in the SAP Service Market Place is this SAP Oracle 9i Client for a Windows 64Bit machine?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards
    Sílvia Cardoso

    Hello Silvia:
I know you can download the client tools on the Oracle site:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/index.html
You need to register, but it's free though
Otherwise, if you licensed SAP with Oracle, on market place you'll get the Oracle DVD's. Inside those, run the Oracle Installer and instead of installing the DBMS, choose to install only client tools
    Greetings
    Alejandro.

  • Officejet L7780 will not install wirelessly on network.

Officejet L7780 trying to install wirelessly on Windows 7 64 bit machine.  I have an AT&T 2Wire router, and I am running MacAfee on my PC.  In the past I could install, but the printer would disappear and need to be reinstalled.  I have upgraded the firmware on the printer.  I have turned off the firewall on the PC.  I have uninstalled, deleted HP files, tried to reinstall and I always reach the point where it says the IP on my printer is not compatible with the IP on my router.  I choose to ignore or connect anyway, and nothing happens.  I have rebooted and reset the printer, I have rebooted the router, I have rebooted the PC, nothing works.  I have tried the Network doctor, but the printer is not installled, I have tried various HP upgrade files, nothing.  Thanks

    Hi TenorWebb,
Try using the scrubber built into the CD or Download.
    From Original installation CD:
    1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
    2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
    8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
    9. Download the full feature software and drivers
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-79353-2&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...=
    10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
    1. Type %temp% in the run field
    2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
    8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player

When running lion 32bit my wireless works great, when I run lion in 64 bit the wireless works awful. Any ideas?

I solved my own problem. Found spotlight in Lion 7 doesn't seem to like third party external drives and gets hung up and unmounts the drives. Had to go into the spotlight preferences and choose all my external drives to not be searched by spotlight.
Temporary fix but would love to see apple address this issue in the next version of Lion.

  • Iphone/IOS 6 and Enterprise Wireless Networks Issue

    Hi there,
Our company runs Cisco wireless using WPA2 Enterprise and AD Authentication. Now we currently have multiple vendor phones/laptops working fine including Apple Macbook Pro's, Apple Iphone 4s, Samsung Galaxy S2/S3 working on the wireless without issue.
However Ive been seeing issues with Iphone 5s and an Ipad now as well running IOS 6 where it just wont connect to the network. I am using Iphone configuration utility to install a Wireless profile with the certificate/AD credentials onto the Apple device.
I just loaded the profile on an Iphone 5 and it worked straight away.
However on ipad and other iphone 5's this is what happened, it associated to the Wireless but never got an IP address so never finishes connecting. just sits on spinning wheel.
Here is some output from the Iphone configuration utility console:

  • OBIEE 11g 64-bit install on Windows 64-bit

I wanted to solicit any experiences that the user forum is having with installing 11g on a 64-bit Windows platform. I understand that the Admintool/Job Manager will not run with the 64-bit installation package but we can install the newly released Client install to circumvent this. I am seeing many forums out there in which the 64-bit OBIEE install is done as Simple or Enterprise. My understanding is that this is useless as the bundled WebLogic utilizes at 32-bit JVM. There is a Doc ID out on Metalink (ID 1220564.1) that states one can only do a Software Install. So we have proceeded with the following steps of downloading first the Java 64-bit JVM, then a WebLogic instance utilizing the 64-bit JVM (java -D64 -jar xxx.jar) and finally the OBIEE Software Only install.
The issue we are running into is that the Install fails when attempting to start the OPMN. So during the install the "Executing:opmnctl start coreapplication_obips1
" fails and references the OPMN not starting. We are unable to start the OPMN service as well. We have a static IP, so this not the known issue with the loopback adapter. The other issue I saw was having to install the VC++ 2005 SP1 libraries per another Metalink Doc ID (1226254.1). This was all done, however, the install continues to fail.
It seems the lack of knowledge from support as well as the vague/lack of documentation is frustrating. I just wanted to ping the OTN community around this scenario.

Thanks Paul, really appreciate the update. Spent this morning rebuilding our environment with 64-bit (Win 2008) and starting from scratch. The install has now succeeded. I tell you one thing you pointed out is something we noticed when we proceeded with the second install. That was the WebLogic version. I had initially used .4 and on the second install we used .3. I am guessing that this may have been the issue.
I will verify with our Oracle resources and I hope this post will assist other when doing the 64-bit install as I think it is very vague in the documentation.
I will update the post with Oracles response as well.
Just as an FYI... the reason this issue came up in the first place was we did an Enteprise Install on 64-bit and found that the Gauge Charts weren't working in the SampleAppLite Subject Area. So I will add that to the Tags for this post.
Hope this post helps others and they don't go through the headaches of a wrong install type.

  • [Solved?] more Broadcom wireless b43 problems?

    Hello
I have been trying to get an old Acer Aspire One working for a trip out of the country (where I don't want to carry the 6kg of a Clevo p150em on my back).
However, the wifi driver isn't working.
I've got the 14e4:4315 which is supposed to be supported according to this.
I quickly discovered the arch wiki page for Broadcom wifi drivers and I made sense of it after a little while, realizing that I probably should not blacklist anything or change much at all, contrary to a majority of the text there. The required drivers should be in the kernel, except for the firmware.
Looking at threads like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117035 makes me think the only thing I should have to do is download the tarball from AUR, makepkg it, pacman -U it, reboot my system and be happy. Still I end up with a dmesg tail containing the
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … cefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.
Of course, all the files are in /usr/lib/firmware/b43 (there is no b43-open there though) and /lib is symlinked to there.
I'm unsure where to go with this now. Any clues?

    Hi,
I just went through a very similar problem and thought I should post here.
I went through a fresh install of Arch using a USB wireless dongle using carl firmware. For some reason (can't remember why) I manually copied carl firmware from my previous install to make it work.
Anyway, after installing I wanted to start using my built in Broadcom card (4311 by the way) so installed b43-firmware from AUR. Installation finished without errors.
I 'ip link' and see nothing new. I then
    rmmod b43
    modprobe b43
and get a freeze. Force shut down, reboot and
    dmesg | grep b43
    and see
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … cefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.
so I check whether the files exist and they do. I check permissions and see the same as innsmouthrain. I check
    pacman -Ql b43-firmware
and it returns nothing. Try to reinstall b43-firmware package and see the same '.. exists on filesystem' errors. I then completely removed the b43 folder in /usr/lib/firmware/, removed and installed b43-firmware again. Again checked with
    pacman -Ql b43-firmware
and hooray the files show up.
    Reboot then
    [stefan@stefan-laptop ~]$ dmesg | grep b43
    [ 8.011883] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4311 WLAN found (core revision 10)
    [ 8.046772] b43-phy0: Found PHY: Analog 4, Type 2 (G), Revision 8

    followed by
    ip link set wlan0 up
    wifi-menu
    It tells me also
    :: Scanning for networks
    > No networks found [FAILED]
I try again immediately afterwards and it succeeds.
So that is my story. I didn't need to blacklist bcma by the way. I tried once using both 'blacklist' and 'install' but failed due to b43 being unable to load. According to the wiki
Since kernel 3.3, the brcmsmac module actually uses bcma, so bcma needs to be unblacklisted or the Wi-Fi interface will not appear.
so I stopped pursuing that route after reading that.
I don't know why the files did initially not belong to b43-firmware and why they were not being found. There's a slight chance that I copied by old b43 files manually during installation as well ( I can't remember but it's a very slim chance), tough I think I would have seen errors during first install of b43-firmware then.

  • Legitimate newly purchased Premiere Elements-10 32-bit install files not available

    Friends:
I purchased an $1100 Nikon camera and the deal included OEM PS Premiere Elements 10.
Legit purchase with a CD and legit Serial #.
Can't install because what is Adobe's fault, not the camera vendor's and certainly not mine.
    Adobe's own published notice:
"The 64-bit version of Adobe Premiere Elements 10 only installs on Windows 7 64 bit. If you have Windows XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit, it's necessary to install the 32-bit version. Because the Adobe Download Assistant automatically downloads the 64-bit version in error, it's necessary to download the 32-bit version manually through alternate means."
The problem is that the same holds true for installing on XP Pro SP3 and Adobe makes no mention of it in the above admission.
Then, Adobe's own Solutions 1, 2 & 3 for manual download all fail, even after fussing for days over it.
Even Solution 3, the last ditch option, fails perhaps because Elements 11 is out and Adobe has killed the 10 download Ftp sites.
Files I am unable to download from Adobe (without entrapment by so called Free Dowload sites) are:
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.exe
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.7z
How can I solve my dilemma, being denied my right to learn Elements from a legally purchased 10 and being
forced to purchase 11 instead on top it. Fair?
I am requesting Adobe politely to make it possible to download the Adobe recommended two files withou hassles.
I must mention in this context my own  (and thousands of others') sad experience with Flash updates. Just follow
my own (and others') posts in Adobe forums. Plus, just read the Internet posts along these lines:
"It's impossible to download anything from Adobe. I have given up and I have given up on Adobe products."
Not that I want to, but I am forced into echoing the same sentiment.
    Can anyone help, please ?
    Thanks,
    Pradip A.

    Hello Mr. Wright:
The download now works. Appreciate your help.
The ...7z file is 1.37 Gb long. I have super high speed Fibre Optic Internet connection with Bell. I rarely have the ocassion to download files of this size. After downloading more than 1 Gb, the transfer hung - either at the Client end, or at the Server end. Bell is sending tech Thursday to mitigate some line noise they detected. Hopefully, the stars will fall into the right place before long.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble with Install that I've never seen before (Gnucash)

Hello all! I am rather new to Arch. I came over from Windows (disgruntled up to Win 7). When I first came over to Linux I did so via Ubuntu (12.04 and 13.10) and Mint (16). Seeing that Ubuntu would love to eventually sell us all out I decided to give Arch a try and LOVED IT! The install went smoothly and almost every program that I have needed has installed flawlessly..That is with the exception of Gnucash. I do a lot of freelance bookkeeping work and Gnucash is most definitely the best program I have found out there (even when I was using Windows). I have tried to install from BOTH the official repository and the AUR with no luck. I am using a 64 bit install of Arch on a Dell Inspiron 1440. All of my packages and repositories have been updated through pacman -Syu and -Syy. Below is the results message that I receive when trying to install from EITHER repository (AUR version is what I have posted). It shows that there appear to be two corrupt packages. If any of you can guide me in the right direction as to how to possibly rectify my trouble I would be most appreciative. (Also: if I am posting this in the wrong area please let me know where the better place would be.)

  • Is it possible to install 2 kernels ?

I have following questions about my newly installed arch system.
    1. Is it possible to have 2 kernels ? So that i can test the new one and then get rid of the older if I find the new one stable.
If yes, please point me to the documentation.
    2. If it is not possible, how can I avoid  possible system breakdowns due to the untested (untested only for my system) kernel ?
    thanks & regards,
    Hardik

1: Yes, if each kernel has a differnt name. You can either install another kernel like the -lts one, or you can build your own custom one with a different name. To do that, search on the wiki for "Custom kernel", the wiki is a very good resource.
2: Also, if you don't want to go that far in case of something going wrong you can reinstall the older kernel from your cache if you haven't cleared it. To do that you would boot the live cd, chroot into your installation, then issue a pacman -U on the old kernel package. A tutorial on how to chroot into your installation can be found on the wiki page for dealing with kernel panics: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Panics
    edit: I type very slowly

  • Outlook 'Bitness' registry key not set. by 64-bit install of Office 2013

A 32-bit version of Office 2013 was installed by default on Windows 8.
I uninstalled this and installed the 64-bit version as per http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/choose-the-32-bit-or-64-bit-version-of-office-HA102840825.aspx.
But the Outlook "Bitness" registry key is missing, i.e. no \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Bitness.
(Note: the old 32-bit install had key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Bitness)
Thank you for any insights as to why the key isn't set.
