[SOLVED] ALT+key gives strange characters in xterm

If pressing ALT plus a key gives you strange characters in xterm (e.g.  ALT+x gives ø), the solution that worked for me was to add the following to .XDefaults:
XTerm*VT100*metaSendsEscape: true

I owe you an awesome, gigantic beer, I have googled hours to find the solution of this strange issue, and it was here in the forums of my distribution

  • [SOLVED] Pacman Key Signing Strange Activity

    Hi,
I was just setting up the package verification system with pacman when I noticed it was doing something unusual.  When I ran:
    pacman-key --init
instead of waiting for entropy, it just returned the prompt.  Next, when I ran:
    pacman-key --populate archlinux
it seemed to go through the entire signing process itself, stating that they didn't need to be signed again (sorry for the vagueness as I can't fetch exactly what it said by redirecting it into a file or something).  The point is, usually I have to confirm each signature.
    Is this normal?
Last edited by Mindstormscreator (2012-08-26 15:42:40)

Does the contents of /etc/pacman.d/gnupg look normal? You could compare that directory with the one on the live media (diff -rq) to test that theory.
When I set up package signing, I think I signed five master keys manually which I'd compared from two somewhat independent sources. After that, I don't remember having to *sign* any more signatures but only to confirm it was OK to import them. And now pacman seems to handle much of that automatically... But it is hard to imagine it would be meant to sign the master keys automatically since that would seem to undermine the point of having them in the first place.
On a fresh install, too, the init should take longer because so little is going on. (Hence all the threads here about it hanging because people haven't read the instructions for creating entropy .)

  • [Solved] xdg-user-dirs strange characters

I've recently installed Gnome 3 on my new brand Arch Linux installation and I'm using xdg-user-dirs to have my common dirs under ~
I'm not English so xdg-user-dirs is translating my dirs for me to Catalan language, however it is doing it badly, for example the Music dir wich in Catalan is translated as Música appears renamed as Música, it seems that xdg doesn't like accents at all
    Any solution?
P.D.: Gnome 3 rulez, but is extremely hard to personalise.

Doubt this is anything to do with xdg, and almost certainly to do with your locale settings.  How are you viewing the files, some apps may also not be unicode aware.  I always use urxvt when when diagnosing locale issues.  How do the folder names look in urxvt?

  • Is There a way of using an alt key on the iphone (to so alt characters)

Is There a way of using an alt key on the iphone (to so alt characters)??
    Cheers all.

There is no alt key, so no, but there are a lot of preloaded symbols already on the phone, all you have to do is hold a key and extra options will come up. For example, if you want an accent over a, hold a, and it will give you options for it. This also works with the symbols, for example, the $ symbol can be held to provide the money symbol for euros, yens, pounds, etc.

  • Using `xterm -xrm` to Change ALT Key Command

    Hello there,
I am trying to work out a way to start irssi so that my ALT key works as Escape (ie ALT-1, ALT-2, etc switches between windows).  As of right now I've configured my ~/.Xdefaults file to contain:
    XTerm*eightBitInput: False
    XTerm*metaSendsEscape: True
However this obviously affects all xterm instances.  What I would like to do is to be able to change this behavior at the CLI...something like:
    xterm -xrm xterm*eightbitinput:false -xrm xterm*metasendsescape:true -e irssi
This does not work.  My ALT key is still set to produce non-standard characters within irssi.  I've played around with `xterm -xrm` and other behaviors work properly:
    xterm -xrm xterm*background:blue -xrm xterm*foreground:white
This produces the expected result of opening a new xterm instance with a blue background and a white foreground.
Why is it that I cannot get the eightBitInput and metaSendsEscape options to work using the -xrm option? (even though they work when I have them in my ~/.Xdefaults?
    Thanks in advance,
    fb

    I think capitalization matters: xterm*metaSendsEscape:true

  • MacOsX : can't type characters Alt Key modifier on JDeveloper

I have a problem using JDeveloper 9.0.3 on macosx 10.2. My problem is that I cant type any characters alt key modifier like [{|]} and this characters are very important.
    Can somebody help me

I just noticed that using the option key ... doesn't seem to work at all for accents or any of the other characters (like œ or © or ®) either.
Could it be that your keyboard is broken? Can you try another one?
Also try creating a new user account and see whether you have the same problem when logged into that.
If you open Keyboard Viewer and press the Option/alt key, do you see the special characters?

  • My ALT-key is acting like a back button -- only in Firefox. What gives?

Whenever I hit the ALT-key, Firefox backs up to the previous webpage as if I hit the back button. This only happens when the mouse pointer is over the web page window. If I move the pointer up to the tool bar, for instance, this issue no longer occurs. Really strange.
I also can't open drop down menus -- as soon as I click on them, they close back up. I don't have this problem in Google Chrome or Internet Explorer.

You may have a problem with a sticky cursor Left key that Firefox thinks is pressed (Alt = Left is to go back in the tab history).
Did you try to close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer to see if that helps?

  • Alt key code is giving me strange character (Yi Baiti?)

I used to type power of 2 by using Alt+178 (²), and a black circle with Alt+41396 (●)
which still works in my browser, but when I type these in my word, it gives me ꆴ.
which is some kind of Microsoft Yi Baiti font. and I could not change it! it always jump to Yi Baiti when I use Alt key code.
How do I correct this behavior? it is really annoying.

I was able to type ² by entering Alt+0178; • by entering Alt+0149.

  • Using the Alt key and numeric code from Character Map to insert special characters in Office 2010 programs

I am used to using the ALT key and specific numbers for characters from the Character Map to place characters in Office programs like Outlook, Word, Excel. I have a new Lenovo T530 Laptop running the Windows 7 Professional Operating System. I have MS Office
2010 Home and Business. In previous versions of Office, this feature worked first time, every time. On this machine, it is a 'no go' situation. Lenovo tech support says it is a Microsoft issue and Microsoft says it is a Lenovo issue. Either way, I'm having
difficulty resolving the issue and getting this wonderful featrure working for me. Any suggestions and guidance would really be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi,
Haven't been verified this myself, but since this feature require to use the numeric keypad to input the value, I suspect the cause of the issue is the laptop keyboard.
To workaround this issue, try enable the numeric keypad from your laptop keyboard, normally, we can enable it by press
    Fn + Num Lock.
After that, try insert characters again.

  • [SOLVED] Font problem. Zsh prompt shows strange characters.

I am seeing strange characters in Zsh prompt only, bash works fine. I probably did not follow the font configuration section of Arch Beginner's Guide properly during installation. Earlier I had problems with login consoles too (tty2, tty3, all those black screens you can go to using CTRL+ALT+F2/F3 etc.) But I fixed those problems by creating /etc/vconsole.conf.
Zsh problem still remains. I am using oh-my-zsh.
I am out of ideas as to what to do. Please help.

What happens if you remove all the oh-my-zsh stuff?
From your screenshot it looks like you are in X: you might want to change your thread title as it is a little misleading.
Check your locale while you are at it.

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-310.19 and strange characters in eclipse

After system update yesterday (including nvidia-310.19) i got a few strange characters in eclipse source editor window from time to time.
I reverted back to nvidia-304.64 and now problem is gone.
Can someone with nvidia-310.19 check if they also see this problem ?
It may take some time for the strange characters to show up.

Don't know if this helps, but...
The latest nvidia driver broke my system graphically (couldn't modprobe nvidia), so I rolled back nvidia and nvidia-utils.  Then the system loaded xfce OK, but began to display odd chars...some big, some malformed...very goofy.   I just now replaced the driver with the "legacy nvidia" driver (extra/nvidia-304xx) and everything is fine.  The first install attempt failed due to existing files in place, so I deleted them then ran the install again...Looks great now.
UPDATE:  the font corruption came back with a vengeance.  Downgrading xorg-server to the previous version seems to have done the trick....

  • Option (Alt) key not creating symbols and characters

I have a new MacBook Pro, UK British Keyboard setup and im not sure if the issue came from updating to Lion, or if it was already a problem on Snow Leopard.
The problem i have is that with the Option (Alt) key pressed im not getting most of the symbols that i should. Currently i can only print out '¡ and €' (Option-2 and Option-2), the rest just dont work.
I have been through all the prefrences and changed settings so nothing is using an Option+Key combination, but still not working.
I have also opened the Keyboard Viewer, and with Option pressed it shows that the other symbols are at the correct keys, and when i press the Keyboard Viewer lights up but nothing happens in the text.
Any help will be apreciated, i would rather get the source of the problem than just install software to overwrite the problem.
    Thanks

Still having problems here with this. It worked after a re-install of Lion, but now is is back to square one: no euro-sign.
    Help please!

  • Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!

  • XSLT transformation format-number into strange characters

    Hi, Experts,
When I excute following code to translate a string number DEBIT TYPE C(60) into xml, the result has strange characters.
    <xsl:value-of select="format-number(sap:if(string(number(DEBIT))!='NaN',DEBIT,0),'0.0000000000')" />
If DEBIT is empty, the correct result should be:
    0x3000 0x2E00 (0x3000)*10       = 0.0000000000
but actually, the result will be following in some cases:
    0x3000 0x2E00 (0x0F77)*10
in some cases the result will be
    0x3000 0x2E00 (0x2600 0x2300 0x3000 0x3B00)*10
What I mean in some cases, I ran the same code on different NW system. I also changed the user profile by NW menu System->User Profile->Own Data, the result won't change whether I use American Comma-Dot or European Dot-Comma.
Can anyone give some advice on the code? Or there is some patch to solve it?
        Thanks and Regards
