[solved] Compiz niggle? - Nope, 3d Windows!

Okay, so we have a bit of a head-scratcher here... just kind of curious about this...
Compiz with Emerald... The cube starts out kinda huge with no windows open or maximized:
Then we open (or maximize) up a window:
Then we open (or maximize) up another window:
That's all in one compiz session, btw - look at the size of the cube. It appears to get smaller with each window that opens, or maximizes.
Nvidia 7300 GT card, I am having issues with blanking (that's in another thread though).
I do not remember Compiz doing like this? The cube's always stayed the same size for me before when I used it? Any feedback welcome. Thanks!

Here, have a pretty pic from Scotland...
Edit: So is there a way to get 3d Windows working without that happening with the cube?

  • [SOLVED] compiz wont use gtk-window-decorator with xfce

    for the life of me i cant get ccsm to keep "gtk-window-decorator --replace" to stick in the Command line of the Window Decoration plugin section. it keeps switching to "emerald --replace"
    is it because im using xfce and not gnome? xfce uses gtk right. anyone have this issue? its not that i dont mind emerald, just on some other distros ive used i can change it no problem, most of those were using gnome though so maybe thats it

    n125 wrote:I was actually wondering how to completely install Compiz 0.9.x under Xfce earlier. I managed to successfully install and get running compiz-core-git, ccsm-git, compiz-plugins-extra-git, compiz-plugins-main-git, compizconfig-python-git, and libcompizconfig-git; all from the AUR. But when all was said and done, I was left without a window decorator. I wanted compiz-decorator-gtk, but I couldn't find it in the AUR and the one in the community repo wouldn't install due to not having compiz-core installed (I had compiz-core-git), which left me stuck going back to 0.8.8 for now.
    Had you enabled 'window decoration' in CCSM??? (4 compiz 0.9.x?) On install, it is probably not enabled (along with resizing, moving windows, etc). It also won't pick up your 0.8.8 settings - so you need to set up CCSM settings from scratch.. Also, Compiz should have built gtk-window-decorator when you compiled it. (which is why i believe that you didn't have CCSM comfigured correctly with your new version of compiz).
    as for the compiz packages in AUR, can't give you much advice there, as i build compiz myself, using Scott Moreau's build scripts;
    git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/users/soreau/scripts
    there are a few build scripts - for both 0.8.8 and 0.9.x - whichever ones end in '++' - are for building 0.9.x ... for both series, there are scripts to build all of the addons / plugins.
    building it yourself, may not be your ideal approach, so i would recommend trying the AUR pkgbuilds for compiz 0.9.x , but this time have a look in CCSM, after you install the new version and make sure that you have enabled all of the important stuff like move, resize, window decoration, etc.
    You also might want to read through compiz' Wiki, the trouble-shooting section covers your 'no-window-decoration' problem ~ as it is quite common.

    photoshop elements 12 editor doesn't open, organizer is fine. I uninstalled the program and re-installed it (restarted the computer each time)...didn't solve the problem. using pc, windows 8.1
    can someone help me with this issue?

    Two suggestions:  the first one is a workaround. You just have to drill down your program file tree to Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer and find the .exe file - the one specifically for Organizer, not Elements.  Make a shortcut to that file on your desktop and it will open Organizer. The second suggestion resolved the problem altogether for me. I actually called Dell and after working with several different techs over several different days, I talked to a tech in premium support who was excellent. I discovered from them that it is actually a problem with the windows system files. I have 8.1.  I went through a "refresh" on my computer which rebuilt all the files. Then reinstalled Adobe as well as my other programs again and Photoshop Elements Organizer works from the standard desktop shortcut.

  • [SOLVED] [Compiz] Gtk-Window-Decorator

    Hi guys, after spending the better part of one of my few free days configuring various apps and so on in compiz [I made a fresh arch install]. I finally got to setting my GTK theme away from the ugly defaults. I've installed the Orta theme for now at least, I'll probably change it once a week. The GTK theme sets perfectly fine, I used the gnome-tweak-tool for that, but the decorations(title bar) do not change, they remain the same default theme that gtk-window-decorator has. I have done extensive googling and have not found a solution yet, anyone have a fix?
    Last edited by Multimoon (2013-02-17 14:23:36)

    The old gtk-window-decorator (I'm assuming you installed the old stable version of compiz 0.8.x from the community repo) still requires certain gconf keys to be set.
    If you find setting the GTK theme (using gnome-tweak-tool) and the window decorations (using either gconf-editor or gconftool-2) independently somewhat annoying, you might want to try compiz-devel from the AUR. It's the same version of compiz used in Ubuntu 12.10 and it's stable (at least as far as I've tested, mentioning because the "-devel" suffix might make you think otherwise). The 0.9.x versions of compiz use gsettings instead of gconf, which means that both the GTK theme and the window decorations can be set/changed using gnome-tweak-tool (or dconf-editor or the gsettings utility).
    Also, some themes (the Gnome Cupertino theme for example, as well as Ubuntu's light themes) use some form of padding, shadows that the vanilla metacity (from Extra) does not allow, that might also cause gtk-window-decorator to fall back to its default theme. You can actually check whether the theme will be displayed or not in advance using the "metacity-theme-viewer Name_of_theme" command.
    I hope that helps, good luck!

  • (SOLVED) Compiz, GLX error even tough i start compiz with LIBGL_AWLAYS

    Hi,
    I have tried to read trough the wiki, google and forum. I cant get this to be solved?
    I installed compis with:
    # pacman -S compiz-fusion-gtk (no to emerald, emerald-themes and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra)
    made sure metacity compositioning was off with gconf
    then i added these:
    gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager compiz
    gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current /usr/bin/compiz
    gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default /usr/bin/compiz
    Have added these to xorg.conf
    ServerLayout:
    Option "AIGLX" "true"
    Device:
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "Accelmethod" "EXA"
    added a section called "Extension" where i added:
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    and a section "DRI" :
    group "video"
    mode 0660
    If i launch compiz with :
    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering
    I still get the glx error! And i dont have the window borders. Read from the troubleshooting to activate the window decaritons, rezise and move, still the same.
    Running Gnome with slim. And how should i launch the fusion-icon with a parameter? (ie LIBGL..) i get an error?
    My specs: Dell d420, intel gma945 express
    sincerely, THANKS!
    #update 1: Dont know how, but it kinda works now think the problem was something with compiz-dekorator-gtk.
    now my problem is, how to add it to startup?

  • [SOLVED] Compiz fusion-icon won't run

    Hello,
    I'm new to Arch Linux and I've just installed it on my laptop. I want to run Compiz on XFCE: I tried the methods on the Arch Wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … icon.22.29) on replacing XFWM with Compiz. The second method doesn't work, only the first one works, but I don't want to use that one.
    I've tried the third method, but when I followed the instructions and I rebooted my computer, I've got no window manager at all: I have to manually load Compiz.
    The only thing that works right now is following the third method and also do the first one at together.
    But I just want to do either the second or the third method. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
    Thank you in advance.
    (Sorry for bad English).

    Hi, I didn't mean running Compiz as root: I just edited this file: "/etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml" to make Compiz start for all users. I followed the method without the fusion icon this time (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … icon.22.29) and everything works now.
    Thank you very much for the help.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz standalone + dzen statusbar

    I've recently started using compiz standalone.
    Is there a way to prevent windows from going below the statusbar?

    Okay solved the problem now. Here's how I did it:
    First I install compiz-alone-utils-git from AUR.
    Change /etc/slim.conf line (remove dbus-launch):
    login_cmd exec ck-launch-session /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
    Change ~/.xinitrc:
    exec compiz-alone-session
    The remaining autostart applications put into ~/.config/compiz/autostart.sh:
    # This shell script is run before Compiz launches.
    # Environment variables set here are passed to the Compiz session.
    # Set a background color
    BG=""
    if which hsetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=hsetroot
    else
    if which esetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=esetroot
    else
    if which xsetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=xsetroot
    fi
    fi
    fi
    test -z $BG || $BG -solid "#202020"
    # D-bus
    if which dbus-launch >/dev/null 2>&1 && test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"; then
    eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
    fi
    # Run XDG autostart things. By default don't run anything desktop-specific
    # See xdg-autostart --help more info
    DESKTOP_ENV="COMPIZ"
    if which /usr/bin/xdg-autostart >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    /usr/bin/xdg-autostart $DESKTOP_ENV
    fi
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
    export _JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=lcd'
    nvidia-settings -l
    sh ~/.fehbg &
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources &
    volumeicon &
    xfce4-panel &
    conky &
    covergloobus &
    (you can find the skeleton file within /etc/xdg/compiz/autostart.sh)
    The relevant part is the xdg-autostart part within the autostart.sh it seems.
    Commenting it out resurrects the problem.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz Performance with ATI x700

    So this is my story:
    I have an Acer Aspire Laptop with a ATI x700 Mobility graphics card. A couple of days ago I installed Arch for the first time. I installed the "xf86-video-ati" package and compiz-fusion and it worked great. Then I managed to break my system to unusability and decided to reinstall. In the meantime there was an update for xf86-video-ati (from 6.8.0-4 to 6.9.0-5) and now I have some quite annoying performance issues with compiz: maximizing/unmaximizing as well as unminimizing a window (so I assume everytime it has to load a new window into the memory) takes like 2 seconds (while working perfectly smoothly before).
    I tryed the options suggested at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … nce_tuning but without success. Since I use exactly the same xorg configuration as before I can only speculate that it has to do something with the package update (maybe some option that was enabled by default before now has to be manually set?). I also tried the catalyst drivers but performance was pretty much the same.
    Anyways, here are the relevant parts (so I think) of my xorg.conf file
    Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
    Load "dri"
    Load "drm"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "** ATI (generic) [ati]"
    Driver "ati"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection
    Any ideas what I could do to bring back compiz at the speed that my graphics card already proved to be capable of are very welcome

    I think I just experienced the same problem with my x800gto.  It was very slow to toggle between vertical/horizontal/full maximizations.  I tried changing the default acceleration method from XAA to EXA.  This seems to have solved the problem, and now my wobbly windows change size with butter smoothness.  The changes I made were to add
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    under the device setting.  There reason you need no such option for XAA is because, to my undestanding, XAA is the default.  Making this change means you should also comment out
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true" #needed for aiglx
    since it is now irrelevant.
    Since you also use an ATI card, I will suggest configuration options that work well for me:
    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "GARTSize" "64"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"
    Option "ColorTiling" "True"
    Good luck.  Hope this does the trick for you.

  • [SOLVED] Latest update kills wobbly windows!

    Ran an -Syu at work today (first time in a week) and my wobbly windows went excrutiatingly slow - though everything else in compiz worked fine.

    OK. I was trying to solve a completely different problem and finally figured this out.
    If I use Xrender rather than OpenGL for rendering desktop effects, this stuff doesn't work. (And I can trigger errors in .xsession-errors by making changes to the desktop effect settings and trying to apply them.)
    I reset all desktop effects to default in system settings and got the effects working again.
    Trouble is, I can't remember why I switched from OpenGL in the first place so I'm worried something else is about to jump at me!

    Edit: Btw, you should have left this thread as [SOLVED] and created a new thread for the new problem. Please read: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ow_to_Post
    Edit2: This problem might not have anything to do with mouse sensitivity and may just be a bug in Wine or the Game, however it's worth a try to eliminate the possibility. (Wine had a similar issue with CS:S and erratic mouse movement (just jumpy) and was patched (wine 1.3.35 to 1.3.36 iirc))
    Righto,
    So your mouse is either "PS/2 Generic Mouse" or "OM". Whichever it is we'll only be paying attention to the id=#.
    Before I start, I'll assume that you've turned off mouse acceleration, which is ideal for games. You also might have to tweak these settings to find a happy medium.
    I'm also assuming that device 16 is your mouse (PS/2 Generic Mouse).
    My idea is to temporarily lower the mouse sensitivity when you launch the game, and then return it to default when you close the game.
    Firstly list current properties for your mouse, make note of the numbers in the parentheses. Most of the options are self explanatory.
    $ xinput --list-props 16
    [snip]
    Device Accel Profile (252): 0 #Change this to "-1" to completely disable acceleration
    Device Accel Constant Deceleration (253): 1.000000
    Device Accel Adaptive Deceleration (254): 1.000000
    Device Accel Velocity Scaling (255): 10.000000
    [snip]
    Disable mouse acceleration (I have this set by default)
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 "Device Accel Profile" -1
    # Or, if you paid attention to the number in parentheses, you can use:
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 252 -1 # less typing
    To lower your mouse sensitivity, simply do
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 4 #The higher the slower
    # Or
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 253 4
    Then you simply use a bit of shell script to launch your game (e.g.
    # cd to dir of game's .exe | lower mouse sens | launch game | restore mouse sens to default
    cd ~/.wine_rack/witcher_2/drive_c/The\ Witcher\ 2/bin; xinput --set-prop 16 253 4; WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_rack/witcher_2 WINEDEBUG=-all wine witcher2.exe; xinput --set-prop 16 253 1
    This solution is a little hacky but it should work
    You can probably find out more on your own from here on out, good luck with it.
    (My personal solution to mouse issues was to just disable mouse acceleration, it's fine for me.)
    I actually thought about creating a new thread but momentarily felt I had to write here itself because everything regarding troubleshooting witcher 2 will be here.
    your solution did decrease the mouse sensitivity but, the mouse continues to be jumpy in the game while moving it from left to right or top to bottom.
    Witcher 2 has a mouse emulator built in and some ppl(even windows users) have experienced this problem but for most of them, editing this file called 'user.ini' and setting smoothness = 0 worked. But not for me. Strangely many ppl playing witcher 2 in wine didn't experience this problem at all.
    I think this can be a bug in witcher 2 which can make only some models of mice jumpy.
    I also have an 'enter gamepad' and the game doesn't support it but one joystick works very smoothly (unlike the mouse) so presently I'm searching online for ways to get the gamepad working with the game

  • [SOLVED!] KDE 4.11 - Window Manager seems not to be running?

    Greetings,
    I still seem unable to fix the fact that systemsettings will run. However it will run if you do kdesu systemsettings.
    Doing so I started checking around in it and thought I'd look at the desktop effects, when I was greeted with this:
    So, I am guessing that the window borders and buttons are a figment of my imagination....
    This is after me pretty much starting over with KDE, removing the .kde and .kde4 folders.
    Help?
    Edit: That pic seems to not link right. Yay. Basically it says that effects can not be activated or whatever because a window manager seems not to be running. The irony of it is you can see the fact that there are window borders and buttons and such, evidence of a WM...
    I wonder if there is something here that is related to me not being able to run systemsettings... yet systemsettings will run fine in any other environment - including Gnome Shell.
    Another thing, KDE 4.11 ran great in testing and kde_unstable. Once it went to extra, things happened. I find that odd. Maybe something is missing on my end that most archers already have?
    Edit2: fixed image link

    No omeringen, Nvidia user.
    I can try again Thaodan since I've had some updates come through (and weeded out some dot files). Last time I tried I saw OpenGL 2 selected. Trying to change to 3 or anything else also got the screenshot in my OP.
    I'll log into KDE and see if it still does the same, after a brief check for last minute updates.
    EDIT: OK, so I can mark this as solved. I found an odd dot file, who's name excapes me but deals with kde sessions, just sitting around in the home folder. Once I deleted it and restarted, I found that not only System Settings finally ran again as a user, but I could also change and apply desktop effects. Peculiar. I thought that maybe it was a dot file that was causing the problem, that wasn't in the .kde or .kde4 folder. It just took finding it and removing it.
    I wish I knew more to tell, but this at least solves my issue, and the issue with the non-running-as-user system settings I had posted in another thread (thinking that they were separate events. Thanks again for all your help guys!

    Anyone can help me tracing in which package the missing file is located (if it's not in compiz-core)?

    I managed to solve the issue commenting the --indirect-rendering flag and installing and launching driconf to create a default ~/.drirc file.
    I just noticed that in the same upgrade I got intel-dri from 8.x to 9.x version, maybe it's related.
    Launching a terminal in .xinitrc and manually launching
    LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose compiz --debug --replace ccp
    show me a lot of errors, but it's working, and I don't need anymore the --indirect-rendering flag (in the past I put that flag in the command because of the bad performance that compiz had without).

  • [SOLVED] help needed with active window script

    I am trying to receive the current window from a script. it works fine, but when no window is open i get an error.
    i am using this command:
    xprop -id $(xprop -root 32x '\t$0' _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW | cut -f 2) _NET_WM_NAME | cut -d '=' -f 2 | cut -b 1-2 --complement | rev | cut -c 2- | rev
    error message is "Invalid Window id format: 0x0"
    I tried working around this by using this script:
    #!/bin/bash
    title_window () {
    xprop -id $(xprop -root 32x '\t$0' _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW | cut -f 2) _NET_WM_NAME | cut -d '=' -f 2 | cut -b 1-2 --complement | rev | cut -c 2- | rev
    title_root () {
    title_window | grep 0x0
    if [[ -z title_root ]]
    then
    title_window
    else
    echo "Desktop"
    fi
    But now it shows "Desktop" for every window.
