[Solved] Downloading package binaries without pacman

I'm trying to install Arch on my little Acer Aspire One D250. Unfortunately, the installation image comes with kernel 2.6.30, which has broken drivers for all the network hardware on that machine. So, I need to download the new 2.6.32 kernel on another computer, then install it off of a USB stick with pacman -U.
So, my question is: how do I download the package binaries for the new kernel without going through pacman? TIA.

try here http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/core/os/i686/
or here http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/
You can find all the mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.

  • [SOLVED] "Downloading package list..." hangs!

I have the latest ArchLinux 2007.08.1 (Don't Panic) ISO.
The first time I tried to install i did get trough "Select Packages" and got a whole system (3 days ago), then I found out, that I had forgot to make my partition bootable in cfdisk, and I rammed my head to the table. I got started reinstalling right away, but this time it wouldn't download the package list, when I selected the menu "Select Packages", it just hangs with the text "Downloading package list..." .. I tried this 3-4 times, before I changed the mirror to ftp.hosteurope.de instead of ftp.archlinux.org .. This didn't help neither.. I let it run like this all night with ftp.hosteurope.de, well I actually fell in sleep in front of the telly axciously waiting for it to finally retrive that god damn list! In the morning I rebooted again, this time I choose another mirror, didn't help!
As I said, I've been trough before, and I'm not behind a proxy or anything! It just stopped working out of the blue..
Are all mirrors just really messed up these days? Or is it the installer which is screwed?
Pinging ftp.archlinux.org just timeouts first time, and then with a ping of 145ms, connecting to the ftp just gives Connected quickly and then right after Connection failed (Connection lost) ..
ftp.hosteurope.de is not more than a ping of 30-40ms and can easily be connected to trough FTP..
    Thanks in advance

I have the onboard Marvell Yukon 8053 (Gigabyte 965P-DQ6) Gigabit-Ethernet NIC .. And as I said, it worked before ..
The bug you linked to is not near my problem, the problem is that it won't let my download the package list when I select "Select Packages" ..
    Why doesn't it matter?
    I also noticed this:
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso/2007.08.1/Known-Issues.txt
That was actually the kind of problems I had when I thought it was about flagging my boot partition bootable or not.. I've followed these steps now, Now I am just waiting to get a connection trough :S
Now I will be calling my ISP to let them know that my internet is running strangely, I've noticed now that sometimes I can't open connections, and at other times it goes trough. I'll let you know if this is a problem with my ISP/router or internet connection, I've already tried to power on/off my router and modem and I've updated router firmware.

I've tested Apper and it's nice, you can use it as a update notifier too, but I really suggest to let it go, quit older habits from Ubuntu and use (and learn) pacman from terminal emulator of choice - checking output of pacman during upgrades is really important. Also none of GUI front-ends is treated as an official Arch Linux package manager so in case of incompatibility you can't blame Arch for this. It's Arch, it's about freedom of choice but pacman is foundation and one of the strongest advantages of Arch so go with the flow and don't try to make Ubuntu out of it - it will or will not suit you, it's matter of character I would say. If you are the right kind of user there is a reward - amazing system crafted (by you) to your needs with great tools and community.
You should note that pacman differ from apt-get/aptitude, it doesn't flood your screen, it's simple, logical and nice to use.
I guess you are right , I just need some time to forget Ubuntu's habits
    I will let it go.

  • Download Arch Packages without Pacman

I have dial up Internet so downloading Arch packages through Pacman is not realistic.  I would like to download the .pkg.tar.gz files from another computer (that has cable) and then install them locally with Pacman on this computer.  I know how to accomplish all of this except the initial download of the packages on the other computer.  I will not be able to use Arch on the other computer so is there any way for me to download packages from within Windows?  I can find the packages I need by searching for them from here: http://www.archlinux.org/packages ,but the only links that are given from each package are to other websites that do not contain Arch binaries.  Is there any way to download Arch packages outside of Arch and without Pacman?
    Thank you very much

pacman get them from the mirrors, so you can do the same.
But you'll have to do the dependencies resolving yourself instead of letting pacman doing it. So good luck with that.
Edit : hell, I'm tired, what I said previously was crazy..
Just do this on your arch box :
    pacman -Sp <package>
Then transfer that output to the box with internet, download all the packages, and transfer them back.

but it is really strange that when i uncommented "http://ftp.archlinux.org..."  in mirrorlist it is the same error
so what destination for all that mirrors are?
and when I download package from web-interface http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/openbox/ it successfuly downloaded from mirrors.kernel.org but pacman can't...
I'm completely dumb, or the universe had hell changed

  • [SOLVED] where does pacman keep downloaded packages?

Stupid question, I know - but I seem to be having a tough time finding the docs or config that describes where pacman stores the downloaded packages during upgrades and installs.

  • Downloading package with pacman, how many threads?

When I download packages with pacman it start at slow speed and then goes up,  this produces some kind of delay between downloads, especially for lots of small packages. I know this can feel like not a big problem, but you know, comparing with yum centos it seems kinda slow, seems like pacman download packages 1 thread at a time while yum it is like multi threaded because every package is downloaded consequentially without speed loss. Is there somekind of tweak for this?

    There's a nice entry in the wiki about this, although I'd use Xyne's pm2ml instead of powerpill-light.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … oad_Speeds http://xyne.archlinux.ca/projects/pm2ml/

  • SUGGESTION: download packages at once [solved]

When pacman downloads packages, it downloads them one by one. It means:
    1 - Connect
    2 - Identificate
    3 - set dir
    4 - Download
It does this for each file. even if the server is down, it will try to connect again to the same server for each file it has to download.
My suggestion is that instead of downloading file by file, have it to download all files at once, just one connection per server.
This would avoid the connect and identificate in many of the files. It also would make much more easier to cancel an upgrade with Ctrl + C, cause it would be one cancel per server, not one cancel per file per server (in case you use wget).
And, of course, it would speed up the downloads.

    -r: recursive
    -l0: depth=0
The download function of pacman is programmed to check file by file. To apply a patch that uses single connection with wget (if wget supports it) the code should be cleaned a bit by putting the "check download" code in another function (before there was no need so it is was ok like it is right now), and there should be a way to specify in pacman.conf that your xfercommmand supports multiple files (%u single file, %U multiple files?)

  • [Solved] Replacing package cache directory for pacman

    Hi
I want to replace "/var/cache/pacman/pkg" by "/home/zetro/linux/arch/pkg" for caching pacman packages, so that pacman always looks and saves packages in /home/zetro/linux/arch/pkg. Can I do it by simply uncommenting
    #CacheDir = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
line in /etc/pacman.conf or is there anything else to do?
    Regards
    Last edited by zetrotrack000 (2014-03-18 11:38:03)

I'm not sure if paccache picks the cachedir from pacman.conf, I think you may need to specify it with the '-c' switch.
    Just something to remember.

  • Pacman seg fault(Solved but with comments on pacman-db-upgrade)

Performed an install from FTP and booted into root login.
Performed pacman -Syu  and received report system up to date.
Performed downloads via pacman of twelve packages including xorg and xfce4.
    Performed download of abs package.
    Downloaded abs repos.
Modified abs extra vlc package and performed pacman -U install of modified package.
Pacman working well at this point.
    Rebooted.
After reaching xfce4 Desktop, attemptd to install firefox.
Pacman -S firefox produced..... /usr/bin/pacman/ report(forget the exact error)
Subsequent trials with ...pacman -U .... produces seg fault.
Cannot use pacman.  All other programs seem to perform correctly.  Perhaps have lost DNS.
    Cannot perform ...pacman -Syu --debug.....segfaults.
Last edited by lilsirecho (2011-07-19 18:19:49)

Solved the difficulty but have no idea what can be done to prevent it from occuring for another user.
It seems that the db did not get upgraded when the ...pacman-db-upgrade ...command was executed.  There was no statement for ..."pre 3.5 db" upgrade....while executing the command.
After re-install, the upgrade command performed correctly and pacman now performs correctly after reboots.
The question comes up as to what to do if the upgrade command does not work correctly and whether some indicator of correct response should appear in the beginners guide.  Additionally, what can be done in the event that the upgrade command fails to meet the correct response.
These questions will in time be resolved by a new .iso but the present exposure is amazing in its consequences!
Perhaps the upgrade command is also a function of properly synced mirrors but the command requesting the upgrade was ...pacman -Syy... the mirror sync function!
    What do we have...catch22?
The resultant segfaults make sense if the pacman sync db is not upgraded.
How is a user to know the upgrade failed?  What to do about such a condition?
Marking this thread as solved ...with comments...

  • [Solved] Installing packages on MacBook Pro 8.1, No Internet!

I'm trying to install archlinux to a partition (I'm dual booting) on my MacBook Pro Early 2011 model, my issue is I can not have a wired connection since my ethernet port is broken.
So my plan is to download all the base and base-devel packages from the packages on this webstie, and install from a portable device. From there I'll download and install the wireless drivers (from AUR) for my MacBook, connect to the internet and continue the Arch installation from there.
So far I downloaded the base and base-devel packages. Now I'm confused on how to install them from my mounted USB without pacman. I don't know how to work with pacstrap so maybe there is a command on that script I can use to install the packages from my USB to my system?
(I know with pacman i can use pacman -U /path-to-install-from)
    Can someone help me out?
Last edited by mastrgamr (2013-04-15 18:40:41)

For clarity sake, I'll assume a few things:
You are booting from a live USB of the netinstall image and *not* your internal hard drive.
You say you need files from the AUR, so you must have downloaded the tarballs when you grabbed base and base-devel.
While in the live environment, you have access to these downloaded files (tarballs, base, and base-devel)
You're going to create a local repo on the live USB.
While booted in the live environment, use the repo-add utility to do this. Add all the packages from base and base-devel.
Using the pacman -U command, install your base-devel packages to the live environment. This will allow you to build your AUR packages. Do that, and then add the newly created packages to your local repo.
Once you've done both of these, modify /etc/pacman.conf to point only to the local repo. From here on in, you should be able to use pacstrap to setup the system as normal. More help here.
    Hope that helps!

  • Manually download packages

I have a computer without access to the internet with arch linux installed, I would like to install some packages on it to watch DVDs, I know what packages I need, i just do not know how to download them. This must be really easy and I am searching for the wrong thing. Please help!

    @Ghost1227
    That wouldn't resolve dependencies.
    @quizzelsnatch
You can add "--print-uris" or "-p" when calling pacman to get it to print the URIs for a sync operation. You could then just copy them and download them manually on another computer. Examples:
Get the URIs for a full system upgrade:
    pacman -Sup
Get the URIs for pkg_a and pkg_b:
    pacman -Sp pkg_a pkg_b
Keep in mind that you need to sync the database though to get the latest packages.
If you're downloading on another Arch computer, you can use the "--downloadonly" / "-w" and "--cachedir" options to download packages on that computer onto some external storage device:
    pacman -Sw --cachedir /path/to/device pkg_a pkg_b
Once you have the packages, you can install them on the target computer with the "-upgrade"/"-U":
    pacman -U /path/to/pkg_a_tarball /path/to/pkg_b_tarball
The tarball will be named pkg_a-ver-rel[.architecture].pkg.tar.gz
Keep in mind that you might run into problems with dependencies and compatibility if you're not keeping the target system up-to-date. There are ways to download the database on another computer and transfer it, but my post is long enough as is.
Finally, if you're going to be downloading lots of files, take a look at powerpill. You can use it to generate a metalink of all the downloads that you can use on another computer. Aside from being significantly faster for downloading, it also avoids problems if your main mirror fails (because the --print-uris option only spits out links for the top mirror in your list).

  • Lenovo System Update 5.0.3 failes to download packages

    Hello,
SU shows an error dialog saying "An error occurred while downloading packages.".
I reinstalled SU and Solution Center and updated BIOS. But it still does not work...
I checked several posts in this community.
System Update fails to download updates
Lenovo System Update 5.03 on T430u doesn't report software updates
And I knew that tvsu_log_xxx.txt has important information for debugging.
It turned out that SU failed to download "HelloLevel_9_08_00.xml" for the following reason.
"An error ocurred while setting the digital certificates for this download"
What is this? Do the digital certificates mean SSL certificate?
Anyone know how to solve this?
    Regards,
    Yusuke Yamasaki
