[SOLVED] Dual Monitor / General Xorg.conf Issue

I cannot get my second monitor to work. It is a Dell SE198WEP. My other [working] monitor is a Dell SE198WFP. I suspect my xorg.conf file is not good, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Thanks for any help.

I simply use xrandr to use dual heads like this. Here's my xorg.conf which defines the 2 monitors and their resolutions. Then a simple xrandr command to set up the screens. Works great in i3

  • Dual Monitors without Xorg.conf Help

    I have an Acer Aspire One and Im trying to setup Dual Displays. Every guide Ive found, including the Acer One Article in the Wiki talks about editing the Xorg.conf file, yet my system seems to be running without one. Other than problems setting up the dual displays I dont have any issues with Display Settings so it seems my installation of arch linux seems to be using some other technology other than Xorg. Does any one know how the Display settings are setup without the use of the Xorg.conf file ? This is a fresh Arch Linux Base Install using only OpenBox.
    Ive also tried using XRandR to setup my dual displays but I keep getting an error and google doesnt provide an answer.
    I try and run the following command ( wich works fine on my other PC )
                    [zero@zero ~]$ xrandr --auto --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --right-of VGA1
    And get the following error
                     X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
                     Major opcode of failed request:  149 (RANDR)
                     Minor opcode of failed request:  7 (RRSetScreenSize)
                     Serial number of failed request:  24
                     Current serial number in output stream:  25

    awkwood   -  You Rock ! I feel like an idiot for not paying closer attention to your first post. I finally realized what you were saying and figured out how to do the downgrade.
    If it's 2.12.0 I'd suggest trying 2.11.0 instead.
    The most recent update borked my dual display with a similar error message but 2.11 works fine.
    I don't use an xorg.conf.
    So essentially this seems to be a bug with version 2.12 of the xf86-video-intel driver. I downgraded to ver 2.11 and everything works perfectly. I am running dual monitors at full resolution with no fuss. So again awkwood I thank you !
    For other Arch Newbies who have this issue in the mean time until they fix the bug, this is how I did the downgrade.
    Step 1:
    download the 2.11 package from the link below
    http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/i686/x … pkg.tar.xz
    Step 2:
    Open a terminal and cd to the directory where you saved the file
    $ cd /home/$USERNAME/Downloads
    Step 3:
    Use pacman to install the package
    sudo pacman -U xf86-video-intel-2.11.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    Finally reboot. When you log back in everything should work fine
    Again thanks to awkwood as well as karol, blind, Inxsible and everyone else for their help. Everyone here is so helpful, I am defiantly an Arch user for life. Hopefully they will fix the bug in the next version of the driver. My next step is to see about filling a bug report.

  • 5-screen (multi-monitor) nVidia xorg.conf -- my setup

    Hi. I would like to share my xorg.conf, since it took forever to get right.
    There isn't a lot of information out there for folks using > 2 monitors, or several graphics cards, or esoteric setups including rotation etc. I hope this will be useful; I wouldn't mind contributing to the wiki if anybody thinks it might be useful.
    So first up: hardware. I have
    nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti connected to a 24" monitor (in the middle)
    nVidia GeForce 210 connected to two 19" monitors, rotated into portrait (on either side of the 24")
    nVidia GeForce GT 440 connected to two 15" monitors (above the 24")

    Drivers: I'm using the official nVidia drivers, I couldn't get nouveau to work. Since I am using Xinerama, the XRandR extension isn't loaded -- therefore my setup won't be suitable for people whose screen configuration changes dynamically. But I'd prefer not to use Xinerama, and even to use nouveau if possible; if anybody has a similar configuration working with nouveau, please share
    Finally, the actual config itself. Here it is on pastebin.
    Rotation
    The correct way to rotate monitors in xorg.conf is through the metamodes option of the Screen section. On my Screen 2 and 4 (the two 19" monitors), you can see that
    { Rotation = left }
    has been added at the end of the metamodes option. Contrary to some other guides floating around, it is not necessary to specify these options:

    I believe these come from an earlier version of Xorg. They don't have any effect when I put them in my xorg.conf, using Xorg 1.12.4 and nVidia 304.43.
    Even when I specified rotate in metamodes, my monitors didn't appear to rotate because I had originally written
    Option "metamodes" "CRT-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
    instead of
    Option "metamodes" "DFP-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
    This just made rotation fail silently, with no error message. Make sure to specify DFP if you're using a digital output (DVI, HDMI, DP) and CRT only if you're using a VGA output on your graphics board.
    Tips
    When you're testing out a new Xorg.conf, you can use
    startx -- :1
    to start a new X server without killing the current one. See if your configuration works, then switch back to your original X server by pressing Cmd-Alt-F7.
    You should also keep a log of different configurations you have tried. You can use a version control system like git to track changes to your Xorg.conf; make sure you document every change you have made, and why, it can prove invaluable later on.
    Feel free to ask about this setup. I would like to know something: what is the function of the Screen option in the Device section? On the four Device entries for my nVidia 210 and 440 cards, there is an option called Screen; when I take it out, the setup breaks. Why are they there? And why do they not map to the screen numbers in the Screen section? (They are numbered 0, 0, 1, 1 rather than 1, 2, 3, 4)

    The red arrows show the pointer progression through the monitors (moving mouse left to right). When the cursor is on the top monitor, it becomes an X, and the screen is black.

    This what appears with the new xorg.conf:
    "leftAcer" and "rightAcer" appear, but nothing appears on "topAcer" (it appears not to be getting a signal from the gpu). I can move the mouse pointer between "leftAcer" and "rightAcer".
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few details about the hardware setup:
    GeForce 9600 GT is in the PCI:1 slot. It's DVI out is going to "acerLeft", it's VGA out is going to "acerRight".
    GeForce GT 610 is in PCI:2 slot. It's VGA out is going to "acerTop".

  • [SOLVED] Dual monitor: can't switch from X to vc

    I have  a dual monitor configuration on my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-SR21M), so that I can work with the laptop screen and an external lcd at the same time. It works amazingly well, every screen has its own resolution and I can drag windows from one screen to another (ATI drivers are wonderful in this aspect!). The only problem is that I can't switch to vc pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 or any other function key: the laptop screen freezes black, while the other shows "no input" box. Pressing Alt+F7 the X interface is restored correctly to both screens. If I start X without the external lcd  the problem disappears, so I think it is a multimonitor issue. Here's my xorg.conf:

    I modified xorg.conf heavily to solve another problem, with this new version I can switch to vc even with dual monitor setup (obviously the external lcd doesn't work) and then go back to X without any issue:

  • Archlinux dual monitor without Xorg/Xwindows (cli only)

    Hi,
    i have successfully installed Archlinux on my laptop, everything is fine!  Xcfe desktop env. is able to handle dual monitor with the "xinerama" option (move windows between screens) with the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf/10-monitor.conf" config. file.
    But, one question remain :   when i exit from Xwindows (cli only),  my dual monitor is going back to "twinview" (same screen for both monitors).  Is it possible to have a "xinerama" view (2 independants Cli screens) in command line only (like in Xwindows)?
    if yes , what can i do / install  / run or configure to achieve this goal ?
    ps : im not taking about alt-f1-f2-f3 switching tty or the "screen" command, but a way to handle 2 monitors in Linux command line....

    Hmm, I remember when I first set up Arch linux It would do wired things with the video in X, screens weren't layed out correctly, and I couldn't get all 3 to work ( Only 2 ) So I needed to switch to the "Offical" drivers, It works well and I play games so I would've done it anyways, I'm not sure what you plan on doing with your computer ( Games, just internet, media ) but the "offical" drivers might be worth a shot.

    I used the repository method, and It's working fine for me. I will say that in general although the open source drivers work really well and KMS is just awesome! ( It takes almost 10 seconds to switch from X to a tty for me right now ) The ATI drivers are sometimes just less problems.

    I'm raginaot and I'll probably be asking a lot of dumb questions here in the near future
    I just decided to say goodbye to windows for a while. Been wasting too much time gaming and it was either - switch to linux or - sell my computer and move to the desert. I'm gonna try the former first and see how it goes.
    I managed to install arch and get gnome up and running with the help of the most awesome linux install guide I have ever seen and I installed the xf86-video-ati driver package but I'm having trouble getting it to recognise my 2 monitors.
    I'll list my hardware specs before I go any further:
    CPU: i7 920
    RAM: 12GB (3x4) Mushkin Silverline 1333MHz
    Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R (rev 1.6)
    GPU: ATI HD5870 1GB
    Souncard: Auzentech X-fi forte
    Monitors: Samsung 2693HM and Samsung 226BW
    now the monitors seem to be stuck in mirrored mode, both showing the same image at 1280*1024 resolution
    when I try to set them both to on and their native resolutions (1920*1200 and 1680*1050) in the display settings I get a message that says:
    "the selected configuration for displays could not be applied
    required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3600, 1200), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1920, 1920"
    But when I unplug the 22" display, I can set the 26" to native res just fine and vice versa.
    Now to the second issue...
    I have 2 1TB drives in raid0, but in fdisk -l they appear as 2 seperate 1TB drives instead of 1 big 2TB like they're supposed to (see output below).
    I guess I have to mount them in some special way, but I have no idea how. The raid worked right away in linux mint.

    So, I inherited a new monitor from my friend just a couple days ago and had a go at setting it up. Here's my current setup, to illustrate:

I have the monitor to the left plugged via a dvi cable, and the one to the right that is rotated (for the purpose of better viewing webpages) with plain old vga.     So, this information aside, I went and tried to add my second screen and make everything happy, I used the dual screen section in the X.Org Wiki page, which I believe was for the nVidia users, but I couldn't find any direction otherwise, so I figured with a few changes it could work with my radeon just fine. I am on xorg-server 1.9.4.901-1 with openbox as my window manager, no complete DE.

    This leaves me with 3 questions I cannot seem to figure out:
    1) What did I do wrong with the non-working xorg config file, giving the error "no screens found"?
    2) Another extra twist of difficulty comes from the rotated monitor on the right.  How should I adopt for that, with resolutions and such?
    3) Xinerama/Twinview  - I am confused which one of these I should choose, what they offer over the other, or should I just not bother at all?
    I would like, in a "perfectly good configuration", windows to be able to move from each monitor to the other, the monitors to be two distinct monitors (ie. they don't mirror each other), a maximized window to only fill up just the one monitor (and not both), and finally, fullscreen programs (like games and such) only fullscreen to the monitor they are on. Is such a configuration possible with all of these parameters?

    Judging by your use of "radeon" as your video driver, it looks like you're using xf86-video-ati. Therefore, congratulations, xrandr will rescue you :-) (This should also be the case if you you're using the Catalyst driver.)
    thinkwiki should be enough to get your feet wet. Note: This guide is a bit dated, but 90% of it is still relevant and useful. For example, it claims that you need to modify your xorg.conf to add a Virtual screen size---this is only true if kernel modesetting is disabled. If it's enabled (and it should be if you're using xf86-video-ati), then you're good to go. If you're using Catalyst, you will have had to disable KMS. So you'd either have to add a Virtual screen to use xrandr, or configure your monitor setup with amdcccle.
    Finally, you asked about rotation. I don't think this is anything that `man xrandr` can't answer, and you should be okay as far as support goes---rotation was added in RandR 1.2, which any civilized video driver should support. (Except nvidia blob.)
    Anywho, feel free to come back with more questions if you have any!
    (For terminology sake, this means you will be using neither Xinerama nor TwinView to configure your multi-monitors. You will be using RandR if you use xrandr. Interestingly, your screen setup will still be reported to Openbox via the Xinerama extension. You may be interested in a utility like `lxrandr` if the command line frightens you.)

  • SOLVED: Created /etc/X11/xorg.conf, now system won't boot.

    I was trying to solve an issue with display resolution not sticking and it was suggested to me that I create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
    I created the file and put in the lines that I had in my .xprofile related to xrandr.
    Now... my system will not boot. It appears to get hung up trying to detect my ethernet connection. I tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to avoid X windowing, no dice.
    What's more, my system rescue pen drive appears to have died. I still have my Arch install CD.
    All I want to do is delete xorg.conf. My arch root is a logical volume so I have no idea how to mount it after I boot from the Arch install CD, or if I can even do this.
    Update: So embarrassing, my mount command was wrong. Once I did something that looked like this:
    mount /dev/VolGroup0/root /mnt/
    I was able to get into /etc/X11 and delete xorg. conf. Rebooted and all appears well.

  • [Solved] Changed Graphics Driver/Xorg.conf, Font Size Now Different

    I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
    The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
    I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf.  I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository.  I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

  • NF750 with Dual Monitors using Internal Video issue

    I'm currently trying to get this motherboard to output using both the builtin DVI, and HDMI for a dual monitor setup.
    Unfortunately what is happening is, first, while in windows with current output to DVI, connecting the HDMI, the monitor is not detected. When booting up with the HDMI it will be detected as long as the DVI is not plugged in. If both are plugged in, neither will show a screen.
    Has anyone else had this issue and managed to fix it?
    I have also updated to the latest nforce drivers, and bios.

    i just did a fresh install of arch and have no xorg.conf. i am using 10-monitor.conf and 20-nvidia.conf. system works fine i am just wondering is it possible to set sli without using xorg.conf? if it is how to do it?

    You should be able to follow these instructions and add the needed changes to your 20-nvidia.conf.

  • [SOLVED] Dual monitor acting weird on Fluxbox after system upgrade

    Hello.
    I'm using Fluxbox on Xorg. I have two monitors and for more than one year my setup has been this in ~/.xinitrc:

    Now, I just upgraded my packages (fluxbox and some xorg-* packages were upgraded, like xorg-server, as well as xf86-video-ati) and, although the dual monitor setup works, it seems like each monitor is not recognized individually. My Fluxbox toolbar spans on both monitors horizontally (whereas it used to reside on the left one) and when I maximize a window, it's maximized on both monitors (whereas it used to be maximized on one monitor only, the closest).
    Before reverting the upgrade, anybody knows why this is happening?

    Yup, I can confirm that. It's the fluxbox package.

    Hi,
    maybe I should read more about X configurations, but sometime we can find a timely answer on the forum
    Sorry but my knowledge lacks a bit on this matter
    I'm planning to introduce my wife on linux world , but she likes winXP, Then I found the answer in virtualbox
    Now she complain that I set the screen resolution too high for her. In fact X starts with the given resolution by xorg.conf found into /etc/X11 made by nvidia-settings.
    How to modify resolution as an user logs in?
    Is there a way to load either different xorg.conf or to tell HAL to talk to X to change configuration like nvidia-settings can do on-the-fly?
    I'd like to show to my wife an invisible linux

    Well, I don't know how to do it through ~/.Xdefaults, but I would assume that editing ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc or even ~/.xinitrc would due by adding in `xrandr -s <preferred resolution here>'. That way each time a user logs in, it would execute that and change the resolution to whatever user. Sounds slightly hackish though so I am gonna look at how to do it through /etc/X11/xorg.conf and ~/.Xdefaults, however, I doubt it can be done through /etc/X11/xorg.conf also. If I find anything, I shall return to you.

  • [solved]terminus font without xorg.conf

    Hi
    I start X without a xorg.conf as every conf I tried did not work. Without the conf X works perfectly.
    But I now want the terminus font for my WM and pacman installed them in /usr/share/fonts/local
    This directory is not recognized by X by default.
    Additional font directories are usually specified in the xorg.conf, but I don't have one.
    I can manually set the font path with:
    mkfontdir
    xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/local
    xset fp rehash
    I now see the font in xfontsel.
    But when I restart X, it's gone..
    Is there a way to fix this?

  • [Solved] dual monitor statusbar problem (dwm)

    Hi all , have a problem with status bar in dwm . The status bar change their position between monitors , if i work in the monitor1 the status bar is in monitor1 , but if i change to the monitor2 the status bar goes to monitor2 . 
    I would like to leave the bar in a single monitor or in both . Thanks in advance
    (i used conky status bar and xrandr)

    I currently have dwm simply draw status on all monitors, but I'm investigating separate status bars per monitor. We'll see where that takes me. Dwm is a tinker's WM!
