[SOLVED] duplicate partitions listed during setup on macbook pro 8,2

I'm trying to install Arch on a 8,2 Macbook Pro.
I gave myself 40gb of space so far.
Here's the partition map:
sda1-3 are for the gpt, osx partition and osx recovery partition.
sda5 boot logical linux 200mb /boot
sda6 logical linux swap 2048mb swap
sda7 logical linux 7168mb /root
sda8 logical linux 30886mb /home
after I set this up in cfdisk and write it, then select the sources, editor & clock.
When I select option 4 "prepare hard drives" is where the problem is.
I select option 3 to Manually Configure Block Devices.
When I look in the Manage filesystems window I see duplicate partitions.
/dev/sda1 raw -200MiB
/dev/sda1 raw -200MiB
/dev/sda2 raw -676115MiB
/dev/sda2 raw -676115MiB
... this continues to
/dev/sdb1 raw -200MiB
/dev/sdb1 raw -200MiB
/dev/sdb2 raw -41409MiB
/dev/sdb2 raw -41409MiB
/dev/sdb3 raw -542994MiB
/dev/sdb3 raw -542994MiB
/dev/mapper/arch_lib-modules raw -99MiB
/dev/mapper/arch_root-image raw -671MiB
/dev/mapper/arch_usr-share raw -413MiB
I can't select the partitions to setup the filesystems & would appreciate some help/direction.
Thanks.

Well, after a search and a few trials, I was able to get the installer to recognize the additional partitions.
Without this post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141695 I would have been completely lost.
After I setup the partitions, I dropped down to terminal.
I had to go to the tmp director and create the directory aif and a file in the aif directory called aif-blockdata
Here's what my edit looked like:
/dev/sda5 raw no_label ext2;yes;/boot;target;no_opts;no_label;no_params
/dev/sda6 raw no_label swap;yes;no_mountpoint;target;no_opts;no_label;no_params
/dev/sda7 raw no_label ext4;yes;/;target;no_opts;no_label;no_params
/dev/sda8 raw no_label ext4;yes;/home;target;no_opts;no_label;no_params
After that setup and going through and selecting the partitions correctly & what would go there (/boot, swap, /root, /home) I got another error;
Filesystem/blockdevice processor problem
Warning: Could not create all needed filesystems. Either the underlying blockdevices didn't appear in 10 iterations, or process_filesystem failed
Has anyone else had this problem?

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.

2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that.

Do I need to install virus protection for the windows portion of the partitioned hard drive on the MacBook Pro?

You are running Windows, so yes. I like Microsoft's built in protection and how 8.1 is 'hardened' but I also install Malwarebytes. I will not use Kaspersky anymore. But you do need something. And 8.1 is more secure than prior versions definitely but there were some major zero-day security updates on this month's "Patch Tuesday."

which duplicate cleaner can i use on macbook pro?

Skytag's File Buddy.   I would just use it to sort by file name.  Don't use the duplicate cleanup as it may get too much!  Note it may also show applications as packages, and their contents as individual files within a .app folder.  Do not confuse the various .app folder contents for files that are duplicate, since they are default files for the various Mac OS X applications.   Make sure the duplicates have the same file name and byte size, before choosing to delete one file.

  • How to Solve Windows 8 Metro App Crash on Macbook Pro 2010 13"

    There is a known problem
    (See http://www.onebitzero.com/how-to-fix-metro-apps-from-crashing-under-nvidia-beta- driver-296-17-in-windows-8/ )
that many notebooks equipped with nVIDIA GPU and running Windows 8 will crash some Modern UI (Metro) apps,
including Game, Camera, Remote Desktop, ... apps.
My MacBook Pro 2010 13" has an nVIDIA GeForce 320M.
I installed Windows 8 Pro RTM gotten from DreamSpark Premium and Boot Camp Software 3.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Unfortunately, I met the Modern UI app crash problem.
I fought against this problem two days and almostly surrended.
    Unbelievablely, I could solve it.
Yes. We can simply solve the crash problem by installing the latest 301.42 driver download from nvidia.com.
But it is not perfect: we will find we can't adjust the brightness anymore.
I also tried many methods, including modifies .inf files and change permissions but all are failed.
Except one for which I got an idea from Windows Event Viewer.
I found I got an error event when I launched the problematic Modern UI app. For example,
"Faulting application name: wwahost.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x50107c6e
Faulting module name: nvd3dumx.dll, version: 8.17.11.9682, time stamp: 0x4b884f8a"
(Attention! The following steps are at your risks.
Or you may not try it.)
The steps to solve the crash problem and simultanously preserve the brightness adjustment function are:
    1. Download the latest 301.42 driver from nvidia.com. Then, click it to extract files to C:\
    and we don't install it.
    2. Copy the Boot Camp nVIDIA driver files from "13-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD,"
    ie. this folder:
    (DVD drive):\Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64
    3. Replace the older nvd3dumx.dl_ with the newer one.
    I.e. overwrite
    Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\nvd3dumx.dl_
    by
    C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver\nvd 3dumx.dl_
    4. Follow this tutorial to turn off driver integrity check:
    http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/05/05/disable-driver-signing-windows-7/
    and reboot.
    5. Install the modified driver by clicking
    Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\setup.exe
    6. Reboot your computer and good luck.

The method described above is too complex.
I found a more easy way to solve the Modern app crash problem.
That is to download the legacy driver 296.10 here
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy
Unfortunately, 296.10 and 19x don't solve all problems on Windows 8:

  • Duplicate contacts between my ipad, my macbook pro & my iphone 3gs.

After reading some post. I decided to update manually my ipad contacts and get rid of the duplicates. then I went and deleted the complete address book from my macbook pro. now, I'm left with the updated contacts on the ipad which I have setup to sync w/icloud & the contacts that I would like to correct from the iphone. what should be my next step?
I think I should get rid of the contacts in the iphone and then leave icloud to sync the ipad contacts into the phone.
by the way I have the same problem with my calendar.
Thanks in advance for any for comments.

Thanks! Where  do I check that specifically?
Also - after playing around some more realised that my iPad mini pushes out to my iphone and macbook. So when I update contacts on my iPad it updates everywhere else.

  • Is there any way to make a snow leopard partition on an early 2011 MacBook Pro that was upgraded to Lion, without the original boot disk?

So I have an early 2011 MacBook pro,  I believe it shipped with snow leopard originally, as I purchased and upgraded to Lion fairly early on.  I am trying to make a partition right now and have it run snow leopard so I can use programs that have PowerPC.
I should note, I replaced both the RAM and the harddrive in my Macbook pro.  I changed from 4 GB of ram (that came shipped) to 8 GB of ram from a 3rd party, that I installed on my own months ago, have registered in the computer and have been working fine for quite some time now.
Also I should note I replaced my harddrive.  I went from what ever the standard 500 GB harddrive that shipped with 15 inch early 2011 MB pro's.  I now have a 3rd party SSD that's 240GB's that I also installed on my own, (at the same time as the RAM---Black friday items)  The harddrive has been working just fine since then.
In installing the harddrive I borrowed a friends external harddrive and used a program called carbon copy cloner to get everything over to the SSD.
Now here is my issue.  I have ordered the Snow Leopard (10.6.3) install disks from apple, I have created a partition on my SSD for snow leopard, but when I try to select the install disc for snow leopard at boot I get three beeps.
I know this issue has been posted elsewere but it said answered and the answer is no longer available.  I also am unsure if any of the RAM or Harddrive swapping could have been causing the issue.  I have the old harddrive and RAM still, but unfortunatley have no external harddrive anymore or money to afford one.
Is there any way I can install a partition that runs snow leopard on my early 2011 MB pro with what I have (new SSD, New RAM, Current version Lion running, no external drive, lack of original snow leopard disks [I lost them ] and the general 10.6.3 snow leopard boot disks).
Let me know If there is anything I can do.  I'm a now broke college student so i'd like to spend as little $$$$ as possible
*PS I should also note the DVD drive is working fine, it reads the disk, the disk is brand new, it plays DVD's fine and has never had any issues in the years i've used it for similar tasks*
sorry for the long drawn out post, I just wanted to include as much as possible from what I've seen other people have issues with

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • Setup new MacBook Pro

After creating an account it comes back to the beginning of the process. I have already done the whole process for 3 times.
Was I blessed with a new MacBook Pro that came with defect from the box?

I would probably take it back to the Apple Store you bought it from and see if theyll swap it out for you. Also should probably get personal setup while you're there to make sure all is good.

  • Grey screen during installation with Macbook Pro 13" I5 processor

I have a Macbook Pro with an I5 processor. I used software called Wipedrive to wipe my hard drive completely clean (I should  have used the OS to wipe my drive). I tried to install the OS with a copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 that I purchased at Best Buy at about the same time I purchased my Mac. I hold the "C" key down while booting with my OS but get nothing but a grey screen. I have no options to acess files or folders when I boot up. I tried repartitioning with a disk I got from the internet. I even tried deleting the partition and installing without a partition (hoping the installation disk would give the option to partition). How can I install Snow Leopard to the hard drive without any Mac specific data on my hard drive. I have an early 2011 processor in my 6 month old Mac.  Any help would sure would be appreciated as I have spent a lot of time on this.

You need a newer DVD than the one you have, such as the computer's original disks.

  • Problems Partitioning extra internal HD in MacBook Pro

    So here is the skinny,
I bought a Mac Book Pro late 2011 2.3 i7 750gb 8gb ram moved the 750 to the optical bay then replaced it with a mushkin 240gb SSD, I love it. except I started using time machine on my 750gb internal drive and have run out of space and I thought I could control the space it uses, surprise surprise.  I decided to delete my time machine saves and partition my 750gb Hard drive and when I did I get this message,
        Partition failed with Error:
This operation requires a newer version of Mac OSX for this disk.
So what the heck is going on? I looked over the disk and verified and repaired it, The smart status is verified and the partition map scheme is GUID, so on paper everything looks really good. Could any please drop me a line, I feel a little ********......

Ya that is a great question Ralph, I purchased this Macbook Pro used, I just realized that when the former owner did a fresh install of the OS he put snow leapard on there and gave me the snow leapard discs as well, does this mean I need to purchase lion to make this work?
If your MBP has a 2.3Ghz i7 CPU then it is Not a LATE 2011 model. It IS a EARLY 2011 model and some of them, ones produced and sold before Lion came out (Febuary to July), came with Snow Leopard installed.
    The Late 2011 models have either, 13", 2.4Ghz i5, or a 2.8Ghz i7, both Dual Core, or, 15", a 2.2Ghz or 2.4Ghz i7 both Quad Core or, 17", a 2.4Ghz i7 Quad Core.
So you have the correct version of OS X for your model MBP and the correct Factory supply OS X version DVD, that is if the DVD says Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 on it. One way to check what model you have, Early or Late, is to open About this Mac and then click the More Info button and on the next screen that comes up it should say right at the top XX-Inch, Early/Late 2011.
I suspect the problem lyou are having is because you have used the internal as a TM backup drive. Once you erase those files, using the Erase feature in DU, you will be able to Re-Partition it.

  • Listing on ebay with MacBook Pro

I've been trying to create a listing on ebay with my new MacBook Pro when I get to the 3rd step Pictures and Details, fill out all the information and click on the continue button to go on to the next step it takes me to the ebay homepage. I figured this might be a problem with ebay but it has been like this for the past 2 to 3 days. Is there any setting in Safari that I need to change to make it work or is there some plug in I need ? Thanks.

Hi - I complained about the same thing here a week ago. No one responded or cared. When I list on eBay the MBP won't let eBay in to transfer the jpgs back to eBay.
For listing on eBay, I have reverted back to my PB G4. I am convinced that even when using the same System Preferences settings, The MBP has some limitation in access from the outside.
We won't find out what's wrong until the topics switch back to technical things. Right now all any of these people seem worried about is heat and shipping and whining!

  • Setup for Macbook Pro & XP desktop with one monitor (Cintiq21UX from WACOM)

Is there a way to use the Cintiq 21UX as a monitor for both my my new Macbook Pro laptop & a Windows XP desktop? I would rather not have to change cables and have heard about a KVM switch from IOGEAR that might give this functionality. Ideally, I would use a single display, keyboard and mouse with both computers when using Photoshop. I don't know if the keyboard & mouse is a realistic goal.
    My questions:
    1. Will the KVM switch work at full resolution of the Macbook Pro and the XP? Will I need to adjust any settings?
    2. What should I know about purchasing a KVM switch? What specs are needed to make it work with the single monitor? With the single monitor, keyboard and mouse?
    3. What issues, if any, will I experience?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • New Mail setup on MacBook Pro August 2012

    HELP!
My daughter has a new MacBook Pro and she set up her iCloud email (me.com) on MacMail. She had many emails in the outbox that did not send, so I tried to change the SMTP incoming and outgoing settings. After I did that all of the emails in the outbox were gone--disappeared AND all of the emails in her inbox disappeared too!!! Her inbox is still on the internet iCloud but how do I get her inbox emails and the outbox emails BACK???

SMTP settings are for outgoing mail only. Better restore the IMAP inbound settings to the ones that were working before.

  • SSD setup for Macbook Pro 2011....confused!

    Hi guys
I have just got a Macbook Pro from 2011. (after being a lifelong pc user).
I want to upgrade the hard drives. Would it be better to get a 256 SSD for OS and programs as the main drive, and a larger SSD or HDD as a second drive in place of the cd drive. Or to get one of these new 1tb SSD's and put everything on it. As its SSD would it make a difference in performance to have one big one for everything?
Also, Im struggling with choosing a brand. I seem to be stuck between Samsung and Crucial, mainly the Samsung 840 EVO 1tb vs the Crucial m550 1TB. I have read some things saying that there are problems with the 840 evo on macbooks from 2011, but have read in other places that the 840 evo is better than the crucial.....so confusing!!
If anyone can shed some light on this I will be very grateful!!
    Alex

    robodelfy,
I've been using Crucial SSDs since I purchased my last MacBook Pro in 2012. I currently have a M500 960GB Crucial SSD in my machine and three Crucial SSDs in a Windows machine. Never had a problem with it.
Although the Samsung 850 Pro is the fastest drive available to consumers, your computer won't be able to take advantage of all that bandwidth. If I were you, I would look at the Crucial M550 1024GB SSD or the Samsung 840 EVO 1024GB SSD. There were some problems with the earlier releases of the EVO drive but I believe that they have been fixed now.
    Good luck,
