[SOLVED]Extra keyboard key to eject cd/dvd
Hi,
Every my extra key (what i needed) are working.
Problem is only with ejecting CD.
I have added to my openbox rc.xml file :
<keybind key="XF86Eject">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>sudo eject -r /dev/sr0</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="XF86AudioLowerVolume">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>amixer set Master 5- unmute</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="XF86AudioRaiseVolume">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>amixer set Master 5+ unmute</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="XF86AudioMute">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>amixer set Master toggle</execute>
</action>
</keybind>
and only eject doesn't working.
Everybody user can do "eject". So I dont know why key not working.

Did you configure sudo so that it doesn't ask for a password (for this particalur command)? If not, that's probably the problem. Anyway, I think users in group optical can use eject -- no need for sudo -- and maybe this is what you mean by 'Everybody user can do "eject".'.

How do I get them working?
I read Extra Keyboard Keys and tried:
# showkey --scancodes
but that doesn't produce any (for those extra keys) output either.
I had them working a while ago, except .. that was Windows (XP).

Extra keyboards keys on Ideapad Flex 15
Hi guys! I'm having a problem with the extra keys on the Ideapad Flex 15 laptop.
The problem is with two keys, one is a Task Switcher (at least that was it function on default OS (Windows)) and Display switch (in other laptops it will be XF86Display).
When I run xev, and press both key:

Im really having a problem configuring this, I can't find the file that I need to edit.
Anyways, thanks and so sorry for my poor english.
Greetings from Argentina.I took this in to a shop, and two technicians tried to solve the problem to no avail. One of them did as suggested, and uninstalled the touchscreen driver under Mice and other devices, but that only disabled the mouse touchpad. So it was reinstalled, and the driver for the touchscreen under Human Interface devices was reinstalled, but none of it helped, and I still lack the touchscreen capacity I had before. I cannot scroll except on the side ribbon, and I cannot use the touchscreen to zoom in and out, which I could do on Windows 8 and 8.1. So it seems there is no new Lenovo driver for the IdeapadFlex 15 that is compatible with Windows 10. I am told to wait and see, and to hope that Lenovo addresses this problem. BTW, I previously had two Microsoft tech people remote control my computer to fix this, and they both failed. I am disappointed with Microsoft and Lenovo. Any computer that was bought within the last couple of years fitted with Windows 8 should upgrade no problem to Win 10.

I followed this guide to configure the key: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … in_Console
Everything works so far, however, i have two issues with this approach:
1. If i press the key too long, the command gets executed more then once.
Maybe i can run the command with the key release event, instead of the key press event?
2. I need to have a virtual terminal available to execute the command. If there is another
program running, the command string gets sent to this program instead of being executed.
Any ideas?MickeyKnox wrote:Can i use the X mechanics without having X running?
Um ... by definition: No.
MickeyKnox wrote:The key is the power button of an iMac keyboard. I use it to turn on the monitor via HDMI / CEC.
This should be handled by systemd/logind unless you've disabled it. Macs are sometimes a bit odd though - there are AUR packages (IIRC) for ensuring these buttons are recognized. (EDIT: oops, nevermind this part - logind should handle the power button to power off - I don't know if you can customize this action.)
But on X being to slow ... to slow for what? How were you running it? Running no WM with just a fullscreen terminal (e.g. urxvt) should not use many resources beyond just using a tty. Plus then you can get 256 colors and easily customizable bindings ... and you can view images/pdfs as needed without having to use special framebuffer tools.

I'm confused with extra laptop keys
When I go onto the Kubuntu live cd, the extra keyboard keys work flawlessly, even the email button launches KMail. I just don't know how they do it! At the moment I'm running KDE4 on Arch Linux..is there any way to transfer the settings?
you need to write an .Xmodmap file in your home directory.
mine looks like
$ cat ~/.Xmodmap
keycode 178 = XF86HomePage
keycode 236 = XF86Mail
keycode 234 = XF86Back
keycode 233 = XF86Forward
keycode 229 = XF86Search
keycode 231 = XF86Refresh
you fine your keycode by running xev and then pushing your function button, in the output there should be a keycode you then need to link it to a name listed in the /usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB file, this will link the key, the name can be any from that file. you can assign actions to your keys from the kcontrol center.
X should automatically load the keycodes when it starts, you can also test them by running
$ xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

[SOLVED] G602 Gaming mouse extra buttons detected as keyboard keys
I have a Logitech G602 mouse with a bunch of extra buttons. I am familiar with xmodmap, xinput, xbindkeys, and easystroke.
If I use xev to test for input events, my back/forward buttons work like most mice- I get values of button 8 and button 9. However, when I use the other extra mouse buttons, I get IDENTICAL values to pressing 1, 2, or 3 on the keyboard respectively.
As an example, say I open a terminal. I can press these extra mouse buttons and it will "type" 1, 2 or 3 into the terminal just as if I had hit those numbers on my keyboard. If I hit shift, it will "type" !, @, and # just as if I had typed on the keyboard.
If I change the keycodes, I lose function of my 1, 2, and 3 keys. If I use xbindkeys to bind a command to the extra mouse buttons, pressing 1, 2, and 3 on the keyboard will run those commands!
The only thing I can think of is using a different keyboard layout, or that the mouse isnt supported at the kernel level (pressing extra mouse keys with X killed again "types" 1, 2, or 3) and I need to file a bug report somewhere. Where upstream do I file a bug report if this isnt fixable?
Any ideas at all?

As I understood remapping of these buttons works fine only in Windows with its windows drivers and software.
For those with or looking to buy a Logitech G602, the answer is unfortunately Windows for a fix I had figured beforehand that it was some kind of assignment issue as I didnt see it possible for 2 different devices to be assigned the same keysym, but thats apparently due to my lack of understanding how such codes are assigned.
After reading the above response, I installed the Logitech software on a buddys windows computer and changed the (top 3) buttons to Shift, Alt, and Super- this allows me to use shift/alt/super + left/middle/right click for use within my wm (Openbox). This is a permanent change until you change it again, so at least you only need windows once.
I had searched around to see if anyone had this mouse working with Linux, but couldnt find any mentions. I can now at least confirm for others all the buttons will work and will be detected if you reprogram the mouse from windows. You can even reassign the battery check G6 button (which I did) and the DPI settings buttons near the left click (I left those alone for gimp work).
I tried Wine for the software without much hope, and indeed while the software installed fine, the program couldnt detect the mouse with it plugged in. It has been my experience that device detection in wine is a crapshoot at best. Anyways, problem solved.. -

IDVD problem burning and multiplexing - gets stuck but ejects the DVD and the DVD doesn't play
I am having trouble burning DVDs. Everything seems to be working fine during the iDVD project creation. I can watch the movie and select scenes within iDVD. Then, when I go to burn the DVD, it gets stuck at the burning/multiplexing stage - the wheel just keeps spinning and says there is about a minute left. Yet it ejects the DVD and the DVD won't play when inserted into a DVD player. It will show the intro and the scene selection pages but when you click on one of the scenes, it gets stuck and doesn't play. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iDVD. The problem persists. It seems like the burner itself is the problem. What can I do to fix it? I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with a 2.8 GHzintel Core 2 Duo and iDVD version 7.0.4.
Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
Summary - What to try
1. Chapters
• Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
• No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
• No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
3. Safe re-boot
4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
SDMacuser adds to this
• On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
7. Trash iDVD pref. file
8. Make a new iDVD project
9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

HT1758 my old imac has no manual button to eject my dvd from the hard drive
I am having trouble ejecting the dvd from my old imac which has no manual button to help me eject manually.
Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

Why does iDVD keep giving me a multiplexing error and ejects my DVD?
I have tried several times to create a simple movie with iMovie and iDVD. Both are from the iLife 6.0 series. Each time, the movie imports to iDVD okay, goes through all the asset encoding just fine, and when it get to multiplexing and burning, it stops with a message saying there was something wrong with the multiplexing or asset encoding and ejects the DVD. I've made literally hundreds of DVD's using iDVD and I occasionally get the dreaded "Multiplex Error". In the past changing the position of chapter markers has worked, but sometimes the only way I can get the DVD to burn is to remove all the chapter markers (not a great solution).
Recently, I've discovered a bug in iDVD that creates the "Muliplex Error" message and it may be the cause of some of my previous problems. Sometimes when you export a movie to iDVD with chapters, it will create chapter menus with incredibly long playing times. My most recent "Multiplex Error" project had two chapter menus. I have a 38 second audio clip that I use for my DVD menus and the first menu showed the correct time of 38 seconds (select View>Show Inspector). The second menu with the same audio clip showed 13 minutes and 42 seconds! When I went to the Project Info window (select Project>Project Info) it now showed the total size of my DVD as 4.8 GB, too big for iDVD to encode. So, I manually adjusted the time of the second menu to 38 seconds. This time without changing anything else, iDVD burned the disk perfectly.
The interesting thing is that when I began the burn, the project info showed under 4GB for my disk. So, from now on I'll check the playing times of each menu before I burn.

Mac mini ejects installation DVDs at startup
Hello,
I have a Mac mini core duo 1.66 Ghz with 2 GB, Superdrive, its is running Tiger will all updates and firmware. I decided to upgrade to Leopard. The computer is booted up, I insert the installation DVD for Leopard, double click on the intall icon, asks me to click on reboot. When rebooting the DVD is ejected and it boots from the HD normally. I tried pressing C on the keyboard at boot up and the DVD still gets ejected. I tried from System prefs the disk startup as the DVD, but the same. I thought it was my Superdrive so I bought a replacement, a Pioneer, it came with a Panasonic one, and the same thing. So I have ruled out the Superdrives. I tried the Tiger installation and the same thing, it ejects it as well. I tried the DVDs on other computers and they are not ejected, the installer runs. HELP!!!!I'm having the same problem. I have a mac mini, 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, running OS 10.3. The CD drive is a Matshita CW-8124, CD-RW/DVD-ROM. I wanted to see if I needed to upgrade firmware prior to installing leopard, but couldn't find any mention of firmware for this system on the apple site.
The cd ejects on restart. If I put in the cd and shutdown, then boot while holding down the option key, it ejects the cd prior to bringing up the boot option screen. With the boot option screen up, I install the cd, but it doesn't see it. -
Hi all,
At work, we have an older FCP editing keyboard, I'm guessing from before the days of having a keyboard key to open/close the disk drive. It is, instead the power button. However, we have a G5, which means we have no idea how to open our disk drive (I just arrived here, and have no idea how the previous people did it).
Does anyone know another way to open the drive? Command E only works when there's a disk in there, I think.
Thanks very much for helping with such a silly problem,
CraigHere's some other options that I've found other than the ones mentioned (and yes, F12 works):
Ardiem
Hold down the mouse button (the left button for those of you with multi-button mice) while restarting the computer until the drive ejects.
If you have Toast, launch it then use the eject command (command-e).
Open Disk Utility, click on your optical drive, click the eject icon.
Restart your machine with the Option, Command, O, and F keys held down, and type the following into the prompt:
eject cd
mac-boot
Add an Eject menu to the Finder menu bar. The menu extras are located in your System\Library\CoreServices\Menu Extras folder. By double clicking on Eject.menu, an eject menu should appear in the Finder menu bar with an option to open the drive.
Sometimes people get too used to using F12 for Dashboard on other systems that already have an eject key so I've listed these alternatives for those that are interested. -
