FCP keyboard won't eject disk

Hi all,
At work, we have an older FCP editing keyboard, I'm guessing from before the days of having a keyboard key to open/close the disk drive. It is, instead the power button. However, we have a G5, which means we have no idea how to open our disk drive (I just arrived here, and have no idea how the previous people did it).
Does anyone know another way to open the drive? Command E only works when there's a disk in there, I think.

Here's some other options that I've found other than the ones mentioned (and yes, F12 works):
Ardiem
Hold down the mouse button (the left button for those of you with multi-button mice) while restarting the computer until the drive ejects.
If you have Toast, launch it then use the eject command (command-e).
Open Disk Utility, click on your optical drive, click the eject icon.
Restart your machine with the Option, Command, O, and F keys held down, and type the following into the prompt:
eject cd
mac-boot
Add an Eject menu to the Finder menu bar. The menu extras are located in your System\Library\CoreServices\Menu Extras folder. By double clicking on Eject.menu, an eject menu should appear in the Finder menu bar with an option to open the drive.
Sometimes people get too used to using F12 for Dashboard on other systems that already have an eject key so I've listed these alternatives for those that are interested.

MacBook won't eject disk during multi-disk installs, or after an install

Oy, will the problems never stop?
I have a dual-core MB 2.66 machine. I just put a fresh 500 gig drive and installed a retail copy of Snow Leopard. That seemed to go fine. Now I'm installing apps. And what's cropped up is that the machine refuses to eject disks after the install is complete.
I had to run the Adobe CS5 install twice because of this problem; luckily it ejected disks as it was supposed to the second time around. However, with iLife, iWork, Quicken, etc., after the install was done the disk refused to eject, and I had to hard-quit and eject the disk during next startup. And now Final Cut Pro is acting the same way...I use the install disk, then put Audio Content 1 disk in...it churns for two hours adding those files, then asks for Audio Content disk 2...but WON'T eject Disk 1!
I'm at my wits end. I never had these problems with Tiger...

If I understand you correctly, you have two disks with Tiger and you installed a new disk on which you install Snow Leopard & apps.
Personally I would not have done this project that way. I would have used CCC or SuperDuper to clone one of the Tiger disks on to the new disk and then test to be sure the disk is working correctly first. A clone is a bootable copy of a system disk that contains everything from where the device used to make it.
Then and then I would install Snow Leopard. After installing Snow Leopard, you could use Setup Manager to copy over your data from the Tiger disk.
With the problemas you are currently having it might be easier to start over this way.

Macbook 2009 won't eject disk

My Macbook won't eject my CD. I've managed to get it in, but it won't eject, after trying pressing the eject button, holding it down while the computer restarts and the command prompt in Terminal.
Can any one help me please?

It's likely you'll have to get physical. This works but requires a few tries.
Take two playing cards. You'll use these as tweezers essentially. Use fairly stiff high quality ones.
Fish around gently and put one on top of the disk and one on the bottom of the disk.
Once in place keep sweeping in and pulling out as you hit the eject button trying to grab (with friction and sweeping motion) and pull it out. Don't fully remove the cards but keep sweeping in and out. It works on MacBooks and slot loading iMacs.
This is assuming your macbook still makes the eject sound like it's trying to push something out. I've gotten disks out that have had 2 disks stuck in as well as stuck disks from faulty drives.
IVe also also used business cards but playing cards work best.

Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

MacBook Pro won't eject disks

it tells me that items may be in use and that i need to close applications, but no apps that are related to the disk contents are open. i can't eject unless i restart holding down the click button.
any help?

Doesn't eject discs or discs eject slowly
If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a single disc several times. Check the disc to see if it has a label or other material stuck to the disc that increases the thickness. Remove the label if possible.
If the disc will not eject, try pressing the eject key on the keyboard. Some older keyboards may use the F12 key to eject discs.
If the disc will not eject, try dragging the disc icon to the trash.
If the disc will still not eject, try holding down the trackpad or mouse button after restarting the computer. The Superdrive should attempt to eject the disc.

What can I do to eject a disk, that won't eject. from my iBook G4?

If it is trying to eject and won't it may be that the slot opening
is blocked by the protective cover. Mine was torn and after a couple of attempts
to repair it I ended up removing it.

Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

I can't get a disk to eject. Tried all the recommended methods; still won't eject.

I inserted a printer setup disk but now the thing won't eject no matter what I do! Help was of no help. I'm hoping someone out there has run into this problem with a MacBookPro and can suggest something to try.

Trouble with SuperDrive: disks won't eject, "felt" peeling

It appears as though the slot in my computer and the SuperDrive itself are misaligned, making it hard for me to eject disks. Note that the disks mount when they're inserted.
Additionally, the "felt" or lining around the slot is coming off.
What should I do to get everything working again? Is there any way to fix these problems without having to spend a ton of money? I'm a college student and don't have much to spare.

I took the PowerBook to the Genius Bar today. The MacGenius told me the repair would likely be in the $600 range , so he recommended I simply look into purchasing an external CD/DVD drive from www.macsales.com. This one from OWC looks like a winner:

Mounting Windows shared disk - getting stuck; won't eject?

I'm sharing the C: on my windows 2000 server machine, on the network. Most of the time I can mount and eject the volume just fine.
However, sometimes it gets "stuck". Meaning, I can mount it once, then eject it, but when I try to mount it again, i get the ?-mark over the drive. I go to relaunch Finder, and the volume is still there, but it won't eject. I can browse it still, but every action I try seems to not cause it to eject. I have to reboot to get it to clear off.
Is there a way to force a volume to eject? Am I mounting my drive wrong in the first place? Is there a proper way to eject a volume? Thanks.

Consistent OS bug when ejecting disks (Mac OS 7.5.5 to 10.4.9)

I have a problem and a complaint about a bug in every Mac OS since 7.5.5, up to and including 10.4.9, and it is about disk images and ejecting disks. It has already happened to me twice tonight, and I hate rebooting my macintosh so frequently.
The problem has been both highly repeatable and extremely annoying because I have to reboot the computer every time it happens.
Its simple to repeat, just put a cdrom in the drive--I'm using an imac G4 USB with OS 10.4.9 at the moment but I've verified a similar problem occurs with floppy disks in various OS versions back to 7.5.5 on a Mac SE 30.
Next use Disk Utility to make a copy of the disk. I make a copy on the desktop and keep the same name as the original disk because I want to use them for archives. Now open the disk image to inspect its contents and make sure it looks right. Once the disk image opens on the Desktop it becomes impossible to eject the cdrom.
I've tried:
- the media eject key--graphic flashes but nothing happens
- dragging the icon to the trash can--icon disappears but the disk doesn't eject
- remounting the disk in Disk Utility and then using 1) the eject command, 2) the media eject key, 3) dragging the disk icon to the trash can.
Since I have an iMac G4 USB (the flat panel) the computer doesn't have a manual cdrom eject. The only way I've found to change cds is to reboot the computer and hold down the mouse button. Every single time I copy a disk I have to reboot--I hate that.
This bug is really overdue to be squashed. Until then, is there a way to force the cdrom to eject without either 1) damaging the drive or 2) rebooting the computer?
I don't want to damage the computer by forcing the cdrom drive open. Nor do I want to keep rebooting every time I make a disk image.

Can you eject the disk after unmounting the .dmg file? Can you eject the disk if you change the .dmg's name slightly? BTW, my mate has a 17" 1GHz G4 iMac and her keyboard has an eject button.
If none of those work, the file a bug with Apple through their BugReporter system. Go to https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite and join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Then, go to https://bugreport.apple.com/, click on the Login to the Apple BugReporter link (using your Apple ID username and password), and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Posting here won't get you any action from Apple engineering.

Disc won't eject, screen acting up

I don't know if this is a bi-product of my disc not ejecting, but when i restart my screen is just a gray color for a long period of time. I only recently got back to the main desktop. I have a blank disc in the drive, that won't eject. I have tried about every way possible to get the stupid thing out, but it won't eject. If anyone can explain the gray screen or why I can't get my disc out, please help. THanks.

I think your mac sees the cd and tries to boot from it, since it can't find a system on that cd it gets stuck on the grey screen.
I know you mentioned "I have tried about every way possible to get the stupid thing out" but can you be more specific as to what methods you tried ?
Unplugging usb keyboard and mouse, then holding down the trackpad mousebutton while booting should eject it.
If that doesn't work i read a while ago that carefully inserting a creditcard into the slot and pressing down on the disk gently, then holding the mouse button while booting, should work.

External Hard drive won't eject.

hi, im new to the boards. just having an issue with my new external hard drive. everytime i use it or i use my cf card reader which is firewire it won't eject either. i've read there are special commands to go in and see what applications are running and i've tried using disk utility to eject the harddrive. nothing seems to work. ive got all my photos from jobs on this harddrive and im worried that by pulling the cord or switching off the device is eventually going to render all my data corrupt or potentially erase it all. if you know step by step instructions to putting commands in to eject these things it would be of great help. im on 10.3.9 ibook g4.
the error is basically telling me the drive is still in use and can nnot eject. not sure why because there are no other apps running?

Well i think i figured out what was causing the issue. i had a jpeg in the trash. i tried to delete it but it states an error message that the jpeg is being used in another application. so i pulled it out of the trash then plugged my external harddrive back in and the tested it to see if it would eject properly and it did! so now i just need to figure out how to delete that jpeg? so the fact that this jpeg is somehow tied up in an application was causing my card reader and external harddrive to not eject properly? strange. thanks for the tip though. appreciate your input.
