[SOLVED] Extremely Slow Wireless on Macbook Pro

SOLVED (Hopefully forever.)
Problem: The b43 and bcma kernel modules do not get along. You'd never know this with kernels up to 3.2.14, as bcma is not automatically loaded and it is not needed with b43. For recent kernels however, it is. It in turn destroys wireless internet speeds.
Solution: The broadcom-wl driver. It used to be portrayed in the Wiki as being something to avoid, but that has changed recently. It offers a better connection and much faster speeds, but can take a little bit more effort to set up. Just a bit.
Broadcom-wl Installation and Setup
1. Install broadcom-wl from the AUR.
2. Uninstall b43-firmware if it's installed.
3. Note what broadcom-wl has put into /etc/modprobe.d. These blacklistings will ensure no interference from other kernel modules. Also make sure you're not blacklisting `wl` or its friends, if you have been.
4. Don't reboot yet. Go to /sys/class/net and use the command:
udevadm info -a -p /sys/class/net/<yourdevice> | grep address | tr [A-Z] [a-z]
(of course replacing <yourdevice> with the names of your interfaces - probably eth0 and wlan0) This will tell you their MAC addresses. Write these down!
5. Go to /etc/udev/rules.d/ and create a file called 10-network.rules. We are going to make custom udev rules so that our interfaces are matched to their proper names at boot time. Here is a template:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff", NAME="net0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="ff:ee:dd:cc:bb:aa", NAME="wifi0"
Enter the MAC addresses (in lower case!) and give them names in the NAME field. Apparently it's a good idea to choose new interface names, different from the default eth0 and wlan0. My file looks like this:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="58:b0:35:f6:45:0c", NAME="wired0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="f8:1e:df:ea:99:17", NAME="wifi0"
6. Go change ANYTHING that had references to the old interface names. I had to change my rc.conf, as well as settings in my wicd preferences so that it knows what names to look for.
7. Rebuild your kernel image with
sudo mkinitcpio -p linux
(you might not have to do this, but it couldn't hurt.)
8. Save this page. Yes, the html. This is so that you still know what to do in case of problems and no internet.
9. Reboot and enjoy your restored wireless internet.
---- ORIGINAL POST ----
Seems everybody and their grandmothers are having internet problems since 3.3.
On a Macbook Pro, kernel 3.3.2-1.
Here is my problem: http://i.imgur.com/AcqLM.jpg
I made that image before checking the forums, but now that I've looked around I suspect the kernel.
Put up with it until 3.3.3? Or regress?

Sry, I just told KDE to disable it

/proc/net/wireless looks pretty bad:

Sometimes it does not find any networks at all (iwlist wlan0 scan shows nothing)
Again, everything was fine with kernel < 3.4. (downgrading helps).
Maybe I should start compiling some kernels myself and search the regression with a bisection...

  • Illustrator CS4 is extremely slow on my MacBook Pro

Illustrator CS4 (14.0.0) is running extremely slow on my MacBook Pro. After selecting an object nothing happens for 3 seconds, than the color wheel rotates for 3 seconds, then I can continue working. This is repeated for any new action, like select, rotate, copy, etc. The ActivityMonitor shows 100,2 % CPU usage during these seconds, all other processes are between 0 and 1,5%. All other CS4 programs are running fine.
I have no other application running at the same time, I chose "performance" over battery lifetime in the system preferences, deleted all the "Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings" in the preferences folder for a fresh start, used the Adobe CleanSwipe tool, all installed printers are on and connected, HD has lots of free space, I work only from the local HD, have only 60 fonts installed - but no improvement. Even if I have a new document with only one object in it, this goes very slow.
Then I followed one of the recommendations in this community, installed a new user account, started Illustrator from there - and the problem was completely gone, reaction time and speed as it should be!!
Something in my initial (admin-)account is causing this problem - does anyone have a clue what it could be?
Any hint would be appreciated very much.
    MacBook Pro 15" Oct 2009, 2,66 Ghz, 4GB, GeForce 9400M+9600M GT, HD 500GB (7200rpm), Mac OS X 10.6.3

That are 2 very good leads, but unfortunately I already tested that: I uninstalled all fonts, so there are only system fonts left - no improvement. I also started the admin account without any start elements (pressing "shift" during boot) - no improvement. The processes (all of them) except Illustrator are all at 0%, some can reach 0,7% - only Illustrator itself is at 100,4% for these few seconds. There is no difference between the admin account and the second user account regarding the Activity Monitor.
But the solution must be somewhere in the difeerence between the two accounts - user preferences, application support files, ???

  • Why slow wireless download Macbook Pro Bootcamp Xp Leopard

Problem: wireless download speed is much slower running windows Xp on a macbook pro (bootcamp) than when running OS X. Example OS X = 1,164 KB/sec download, 496 upload vs Xp = 265 KB/sec download, 940 KB/sec upload.
I have a Macbook Pro Duo Core running OS X 10.5 with the newest Boot camp drivers for windows installed. Test was done using Speakeasy speed test, Safari/Explorer 7.
funny how only the download speed is slow under Xp, not the upload speed.
    thanks for any help,
    Paul

Here's a solution that worked for me, my chipset is a Broadcom 802.11n (4328). It's a 24" iMac (Pre Alu).
Hopefully it helps others. Broadcom have updated WHQL drivers (picked mine up from here, they have Vista versions on there too) and it was just a case of installing those and changing 2 settings.
Changing IBSS mode to 802.11a/b/g/n Auto:

Setting the Rate (802.11b/g) to 54:

Now my speed is on par with Leopard

  • Extremely slow download, internet, MacBook Pro retina early 2013

    Hi All
I hope someone can help me.  I have an early 2013 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM.  I purchased it around the end of June 2013, and it has been upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2.
For as long as I can remember, this computer has been excruciatingly slow.  Downloads of some thing like 400MB can take many hours.  Contrast this with downloads on my old ASUS netbook which can download this amount in a matter of minutes on the same network.  My MacBook Pro is also noticeably much slower than any other devices (old ASUS, iPads etc) when surfing he internet - to the point where it failed to load an image rich apple page.
I have look into various forums but can't seem to find a fix for my particular model - although I note that many people are having this problem with Mavericks.  Can someone please help?
    Thanks in advance.

I would have a look at your router before digging any deeper for problems with Mavericks. I am assuming that you are connected to the Internet wirelessly? Using your MacBook Pro, what speeds do you get at -> http://www.speedtest.net/?
Is your router single band or dual band? Are you in the US?

  • Finder extremely slow on a macbook pro, you can not turn off, and the color wheel appears to move any file

I have a MacBook Pro 2GHz i7 early 2011, 16GB RAM, a 128GB SSD and a 500GB standard. The OS is mountain lion and a month ago my finder is very slow, when moving a file appears the color wheel, also when you send a file to the trash. When you turn it on, the finder takes a long time to be active, the other apps work perfectly. When you turn it off stays white background with the spinning wheel, but never fails to go off. Heat much m'as than before and make lots of noise sinks. Sometimes also starts with the date changed to 2008, not always.
I tried to repair disk permissions, reset pvram even I formatted from a usb and the problem continues.
    Please help.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
A common cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.
Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.
Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message. You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

For some weeks my Macbook has seemed slow.
To see if I could fix this I started doing all the tricks with repair permissions, iDefrag. I've also checked the system.log (with console) and I've removed any problems in the log. None of the efforts has changed anything. It's still slow.
Finally today I found xbench (and geekbench - but stay away from the last one) and ran a test on the system. The result is scary .. Overal score is 63.74 where an old Powermac is index 100. My Disk Test peaks at 11.82 where the Powermac is 100.

What does Disk Utility say about the SMART status of your hard drive? You may also want to download and run [SMART Utility|http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php] and see how it evaluates your drive.
The 250GB, 5400RPM drive in my MBP 5,1 (the 15" unibody model immediately preceding your 17") scores about 40 on the overall disk test in XBench, so there is clearly something wrong with your drive, which should be faster than mine.
How much free space is available on the drive?

  • Macbook Air Extremely Slow Wireless

    Hello All,
Got my brand new MB-Air and from the get-go noticed extremely slow wireless performance. I did a bit of digging and here is what I found.
The MB-Air works OK with cheap (consumer) wireless APs, however when used in conjunction with the commercial APs most of which use the Atheros chipset the performance is horrible. I found that when connecting to APs that use Atheros' commercial chipset, the MB-Air connects with 802.11 G specs instead of N even when the signal metrics are excellent such as -39 RSSI.
Moreover, even With the 802.11 G connection at 54Mbps the performance is both sluggish and latent. Small file transfers have a 50/50 shot at working and large file transfers seem to die reliably. Albeit this could be an issue with Apple's implementation of SMB / Samba which is rather poor.
I have tried to turn off Bluetooth to see if my experience is different. We'll see.
I would be interested in feedback from people who are also experiencing the same poor wireless performance to learn the chipset of the AP they are having issues with.
By-the-way -- I will take a fix, if someone has come up with one. However my guess is that this is an engineering issue that Apple has to fix.
    BP

Sitting side-by-side, my MBA was averaging less than 1 Mb/s on downloads, and my MBP more than 9 Mb/s. The MBP was fully ten times faster. As you can imagine, viewing videos was a ragged, unpleasant experience on the MBA.
I'm using an early wireless-N Belkin router, so it didn't show up on airport utility, thus i couldn't change channels there as proposed on this thread. But to isolate the problem, at my brother's suggestion i took both computers to a Starbucks, and observed the two computers downloading there at equal speeds. So clearly the problem wasn't with my MBA, but my router.
I went to Belkin's website to figure out how to change channels on the router, and checked for firmware updates. There was one, so i figured I'd do that before attacking the "changing channels" task. I upgraded the firmware, and with that simple fix my MBA is happily zipping along now with >9 Mb/s downloads, same as the MBP. More than TEN times faster than before. My iPhone download speeds increased more than tenfold, too.
My advice, if you're having wireless problems with your MBA: First make sure your router's running the latest firmware.

    I'm confused about this.
First, I put the content where I want. Got it.
    Then delete it?
I don't have the room to put it where the application tells me to put it (not enough room on the HD), so I need to put the sample content on a external hard drive.

I also saw this same error message above the Print Queue, ever since allowing the Epson Printer Software Update (August 2013) to install. After this update installed, I was able to print a basic Test Page from the Print Queue, but when printing from any application I only got "Looking for printer..." displayed above the Print Queue, which would stall and never print.
2008 MacBook, 10.7.5. It used to print to my Epson WorkForce 845 wirelessly without problems, before this software update was installed.
Changing the driver from "Epson WorkForce 845" to "Epson WorkForce 600 - Gutenprint v5.2.3" was a workaround that did allow me to print, but I wasn't satisfied with that.
Found this better solution in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5233149?start=0&tstart=0
    (with thanks to Yuengdog1983):
This issue may be a result of the Computer Name being left empty:
Open System Preferences and choose Sharing.
Enter a name for your computer.
Even without restarting the MacBook, I was able to now change back to using the Epson WorkForce 845 driver v9.0 successfully. I never would have guessed that a Computer Name is required in order to print!
