Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Airport Extreme,I created a network named "net1" I also created a "guest network",I was having slow connection speeds from my airport extreme to my laptop(macbook pro OSX 10.6.8) I changed channels and created "net1(5 GHZ)" can I delete "net1" completely?

Can I delete a network I created and now want gone outta the router(airport extreme)? I'd like to broadcast only what I'm using or my guests are using. Can I delete all networks by resetting the router back to factory settings?
I also have this UPDATE "A newer version 5.6.1 of airport utility is available" it KEEPS opening when I open my Airport Utility APP, but when I click on it to UPDATE nothing happens, ever. Im already running 7.6.3

Latest version of the airport utility for snow leopard is indeed 5.6.1
Open the airport utility, about .. and check what version you are running.
The very latest airport utility is 6.3 and only can be installed on Lion or Mountain Lion computers.
The firmware latest version is 7.6.3
which makes it all a bit confusing.

So i have changed the UBS Flash Drive icon of my USB memory stick, when i changed it it shows a default format image preview instead of the icon i chose, (on every other mac and macbook it appears correctly. When i plug the usb on my macbook the icon goes like this:

so... on my computer it shows as a preview but in all others it shows correctly. (i have done it in every possible way, i've used programs to make the image, coping it on preview and then pasting it on Show info on the top left corner) My usb is in exFat Format. do anybody knows why on my macbook pro this happens? thanks.

I would suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and then, using the AirPort Utility, reconfigure it "join" or "extend" the AirPort Extreme as appropriate for your networking requirements.

Cisco router RVS4000 with Airport extrem and Time capsule.

Problem droping connection to internet when is Time capsule in extended wifi mode. When I turn off wifi on time capsule Airport extreme work fine.
Airport extreme and Time capsule is conected via ETH.
Any idea ?

If you use ethernet to connect the AE and TC .. you must NOT extend wifi.. you use Create a wireless network. And setup with same name and security. You are using roaming network.. not extended wireless.. if you want to use extended wireless no ethernet

I recently updated to Mavericks, and now my macbook pro will not boot

Last week I updated my summer 2011 mackbook pro to the Mavericks OS, Now all I get when I turn it on is the grey apple logo and the loading wheel.
Ive tried booting in safe mode and it made no difference.
I left it loading for about 2 hours and it managed to boot up, it then took a further 40 minutes to load after I typed in my password but then I couldn't do anything.
Any help or suggestions? do you think if I to the genius bar they would be able to fix it?

There's really no telling what's wrong with your machine. A trip to your local Apple Store may be warranted as they have the diagnostic testing equipment to find out if you've a hardware or software problem.

I have also turned the system off, for a period of time, and then turning it back on, when I click on Aperture, it comes up and locks in the thumbnail mode. I can view my stored pictures, even modify them, but it still says thumbnails.
I got in this mode by trying to import "one jpeg photo", from a scanned slide using a Nikon Scan4 IS5000ED scanner. I had saved the scan to my desktop before I tried to import it.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

Do I need to replace my modem/router to improve Airport Extreme performance?

Hi all.
Until recently my home network consisted of an ISP-supplier Thomson TG585 wireless router supporting both a MacBook Pro & iMac.
The config. worked to a point. Both machines could get to the web fine, but frustratingly would rarely "see" each other via the router. No problem when directly connected via LAN cable.
I have an external office some 20m or so away from the house and therefore need to use the MacBook at a distance. The TG585 failed to give the range required so I improved coverage by adding an Airport Extreme as a bridge (the Macs now see each other fine).
Whilst a great improvement in coverage, on occasion though it slows right down and even drops out.
I've loaded iStumbler to do some checks and whilst there's a number of domestic networks in the neighbourhood, none are on the same channel and all are running at 2.4Ghz, so presumably the Airport should be fine given its dual frequency capability?
iStumbler's indicating though that at the range I'm operating the signal range drops to between 15-25% and even with the MacBook right beside the Extreme it only gets to 61%. Both seem a bit low.
I'm no network expert, but this seems to suggest to me that it is the level I'm getting, rather than any interference which is the issue?
My first thought was to try and boost the MacBook's reception capability with an external USB aerial (looking through the forums the Asus USB-N10 seems to be a good choice).
In discussing this with local retailer however, he suggested this is the wrong idea. My problem apparently is the poor capability of the TG585 which is providing a reasonably weak/variable signal to the Extreme. Instead, I should be swapping out the TG585 for a more sophisticated router (his suggestion the Linksys E2000). With the base router providing a strong 5Ghz input then this enables the Extreme to perform at its best.
My question (finally!) is whether this is indeed the case (i.e. modem replacement req.)? If so, I don't want to replicate the Airport Extreme's spec. so I'm interested in any suggestions on a suitable modem(router) for this instance? If I have to splash out on a dual freq. modem/router in addition it starts me questioning the wisdom of my choice to buy the Extreme.

I am afraid that the interference that you are picking up is coming from outside sources. Unfortunately, you will not be able to do much about this other than try different locations for the AirPort Extreme.
I'm assuming that your AirPort Extreme is not located close to a televison or other electronic device. If it is, try to move it as far away as possible. Also try to keep it as far away from any outside walls or windows in the apartment as possible.
I was helping a friend recently who moved into a a new high rise apartment/condo development and we found that he simply could not use 2.4 GHz wireless reliably in his area due to the number of other networks and interference issues. That is likely the case in many other situations due to the explosion of wireless networks in the last few years.
For your reference, the most accurate way to judge signal quality is Signal to Noise or SNR.
Hold down the option key on your Mac and click on the Apple icon in upper left corner of the screen
Select System Profier.
Look down the list for the Network heading and then click on AirPort to highlight it
Look in the window to the right for the name of the wireless network, then look for the Signal / Noise readings. These will be negative numbers. Example: Signal / Noise -60 dBm / -80 dBm
SNR = Signal minus Noise, so -60 dB - (-80) dB = 20 dB
Then use the reference chart posted by expert user Tesserax to get a general idea of the connection quality
o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
With only 10 feet between the computer and router, you definitely should see 40 dB+ readings under normal conditions

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

you cannot use your pc license to install on a mac. you would need a separate license (and serial number) for that.
adobe allows platform swaps, but only with the latest (xi) version, Order product | Platform, language swap
your option to use acrobat on a mac are to upgrade to acrobat pro xi and change platforms, use a windows emulator (parallels/boot camp etc) on your mac or swap with a third party.

Can I change the user timeout on an Airport Extreme?

I recently bought an 801.11n Airport Extreme and wanted to utilize its network-attached storage feature, which works great until either: a) I keep a Finder window open too long in one directory (error code -50 and -8xxx) or b) I use it to stream MP3s to iTunes. The AE basically craps out and requires a hard restart. I'm operating under the assumption that it's failing some sort of user authentication verification.
The hardware attached to the network is:
15" MacBook Pro Retina
11" MacBook Air
ASUS G73JW (Win 7 x64)
Vaio VPCEA36FM (Win 7 x64)
2TB WD My Passport USB hard drive (...\Audio\Music is the folder I'm trying to serve in iTunes)

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is configured to extend the wireless network of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), then its Ethernet port should be enabled for network/Internet ... and you could plug a wired device (like the Blu-ray player, computer, or another router) into it for access.

Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
