[solved]Firefox segfaults on start

Hi,
since the last update my firefox segfaults on startup.
knopwob@desktop ~ % firefox
[1] 20712 segmentation fault (core dumped) firefox
I tried downgrading firefox (together with xulrunner) but nothing changed. I've also rebuild firefox from abs, tried icecat and icecat-bin from AUR. All behave the same. I tried kazehakase to sort out that it's a problem with xulrunner and kazehakase runs fine.
I've also removed the .mozilla folder in my /home so it's not caused by a plugin either.
Allways the same.
After that, i downloaded firefox vom mozilla.org extracted it in /tmp and run that.
With that i get:
(crashreporter:23793): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_sensitive: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
And the crashreporter window pops up.
So i downgraded gtk2, too. Still the same.
And now, i'm stuck and don't know, where to look further.
All packages are up to date (except the ones i downgraded). I can't surely say, that it's caused by an update, since my computer was running for some days with firefox allways open and i update my system at least once a day. I noticed this just because of the latest kernel update, for which i rebooted the computer.
So does anyone have an idea, where i should look into next?

just for the record:
after running firefox through gdb i figured out, the segfault was caused by /usr/lib/libz.so.1
After reinstalling zlib, everythings working fine again. But i have no idea, what has damaged zlib.

• [solved]firefox does not start anymore: (firefox:4358): Bonobo-WARNING

Hi All,
Firefox has always worked on the laptop of my girfrind, until yesterday. When I run firefox from the command line I get the following message, and firefox does not start.
ingeborg@laptop:/storage/home/ingeborg$ firefox

When I move .mozilla, firefox starts without problem, so there must be something wrong with the information in ~/.mozilla:
$ mv .mozilla/ .mozilla-moved

Any Idea's how I can figure out what file is causing this problem in .mozilla?
What does code 4358 and 4852 from firefox mean?
Best regards,
Cedric

I have reproduced the problem:
1)Move (or remove) ~/.mozilla
2)goto this website : http://toolbar.zynga.com/install/farmville/
3)login with a valid facebook acount
4)Click install, and then click allow, install now, restart namoraka, restart, finish, and then click save and quit.
Now firefox does not start anymore.
Is it usefull when I make a tar file of .mozilla and post it here?
Best regards,

• [SOLVED] Firefox won't start - "Failed to execute default Web Browser"

I've just updgraded from Firefox 3 to version 4 (by running "pacman -Syu") on my 64-bit Arch installation.  I started XFCE and Firefox 4 worked fine for a few minutes before crashing and closing automatically.
A short while later (long enough to forget exactly what I was doing when it crashed!) I tried to run it again, but got the error message Failed to execute default Web Browser. / Input/output error.
I've tried rebooting the PC and re-installing firefox & firefox-i18n, but still get the same error.  If I run "firefox" from a terminal window, I get the following response:
OpenOffice path before fixup is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
OpenOffice path is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
*** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(/build/src/nspluginwrapper-1.3.0/src/npw-wrapper.c:3160):invoke_NP_Initialize: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(g_rpc_connection))
NOTE: child process received `Goodbye', closing down
OpenOffice path before fixup is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
OpenOffice path is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
firefox: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so: undefined symbol: NPP_Initialize
I'm not sure why there are so many references to "OpenOffice"...
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to get Firefox working again?  (Thanks in advance!)

Thanks for that.  After I posted my last message, Firefox crashed again on a website containing embedded video.  I disabled the add-on, but when VLC was updated, I guess it installed and enabled the add-on again.  Firefox worked fine initially, but I've just tried to open it again and the same "input/output error" message appeared.  I rebooted, but the problem persisted.
Uninstalling the vlc-plugin package seems to have resolved that, though.

• [SOLVED] - firefox won't start

First off, this problem happens on a kubuntu 0804 machine on kde3. However, their forum has not thrown up anything yet, so I am trying to leech the knowledgeable Arch crowd
Problem:
Firefox comes up after two minutes after clicking on the icon but freezes immediately.
Attempted solutions:
Purged and reinstalled - no joy
Deleted ~/.mozilla - no joy
Purged, reinstalled and deleted ~/.mozilla - no joy
Started firefox in safe mode - no joy
Disabled IPv6 - no joy
Further probing:
installed strace and started from the command line, start hangs with message:
connect(36, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(16001), sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}, 16
Further attempted solutions:
Checked /etc/hosts - all clear
Checked /etc/resolv.conf - all clear
Am using Seamonkey instead but would prefer to get back to firefox but heck, this thing beats me!

• Firefox segfaults with Flash content. x64. [Solved]

I'm running 64 bit Arch version 2010.05 and I installed flashplugin. When I navigate to a Flash website Firefox segfaults. It also happens on other pages such as Gmail. Chromium doesn't segfaults with Flash or any other page but Flash doesn't work either. If I uninstall Flash Firefox doesn't segfaults anymore, even on pages that don't use Flash. Any ideas?
Update: I downloaded the 10.1 64 bit alpha from Adobe but it still doesn't work. Chrome doesn't report any problem on the console but Flash doesn't work and Firefox still segfaults.
Thanks in Advance.

I installed 32 bit Flash using nspluginwrapper. Everywhere I read it says that the flashplugin package should install a working 64 bit plugin but it doesn't work. Firefox segfaults with this plugin and Chrome doesn't show any flash and complains about an ELF32 binary.
sand_man: Can you please post your libflashplayer.so so I can try it? Thanks! At least your md5sum to compare.
EDIT: Chrome doesn't complain anymore but still doesn't show any flash. Firefox still segfaults.

• Firefox segfaults on printing - solved

I don't print very often, but I think this problem arose only after I installed kernel 3.2.2-1-ARCH today.  The topic says it all - firefox segfaults every time I try to print.  Other applications, including Opera, are unaffected.  Is anybody else seeing the same thing please?

• Firefox crashes at start in Safe mode - On ONE user account ONLY

Firefox crashes at start in Safe mode - On one user account on PC only
I have done everything on Firefox crash checklist
No Report ID since no start.
So no nothing in further support? See below
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes#w_check-to-see-if-the-crash-happens-in-safe-mode
Get help fixing this crash
Figuring out the cause of a crash can be difficult. If you've tried the steps above and can't get Firefox to stop crashing, the steps below will show you how to collect information about your crash so our volunteers can help you.
1. In the Firefox Location bar, type about:crashes and hit Enter. A page listing submitted crash reports will appear. NO START so no Firefox Location bar
2. Right-click on the latest crash under Report ID and choose Open Link in New Tab. NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and not possible to choose Open Link in New Tab.
A tab will open to a page on crash-stats.mozilla.com, saying that "Your report is being processed". When it is finished processing, your report will load. NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and NO report will load so dead end and no help or support possible
3. Click this special link to ask for help with your crash.
Note: This link is only valid for help with crashes.
I have done this but can not find my question nor any answer neither. So what is next step to find support help?

Hi Max,
Congratulations, at least you made a stab at solving the problem. I think a lot of users used to glance at that KB article (firefox crashes) and give up trying!
Hopefully the crash instructions will be further modified soon, (some of us consider the following is an [/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1855 omission] that needs correcting) have a look at this article for an explanation of how to get the crash ID from your OS even without using firefox:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
The XP OS is likely to use smoke and mirrors to make it look like you have a totally
separate installation of firefox for each account, but normally you have the one set of (most) program files, and then for firefox separate profiles. So this indicates the problem is likely to be in the profile of the problem account, or down to a plugin, malware or other issue relating to that account. <br/>(I note you have already scanned for malware with MSE, that should detect a particular trojan that is a top cause of firefox 6 crashes)
If you create a new clean profile in that account hopefully it will solve the crash problem, you can then address the issue of copying settings, bookmarks. passwords etc back. BUT before attempting that ensure that you disable all plugins, (safe mode does not disable plugins) if you have not already done so. Some plugins may not show up in Firefox's list, you may need to look at the OS program lists.
I note you mention banking, a particular utility IDvault (I think Comcast supply it) has been causing crashes. Are you using IDvault ? <br/> (IDvault should be fixed soon bug684748; version 1.0.627 may have been fixed, but standalone version 5.9.627 has not yet been fixed )

• On Windows 7 Enterprise OS, Firefox failed to start when upgrading to any higher versions after 6.0.2

Hi
Please can you help me with this?
Currently I am running Firefox version 6.0.2 on my Windows 7 Enterprise OS Desktop.
When I try to update Firefox, installations completes successfully. However when trying to launch Firefox, browser window is not opened. It was showing a 'Firefox failed to start' error message for versions before 11. For the latest version i.e 11, no error messages are displayed. When trying to launch application, no browser window is opened, but I can see Firefox process running in Task Manager. I tried to do a clean install by removing all add-ins and also deleting Firefox folder under program files. It did not solve the problem.
Thanks
Chandra

Ok, well let's try going straight to what the problem probably is, a corrupted profile.
Can you please read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles, and create a new testing profile? Start Firefox 6 up using the new profile, then close it. After you've done that, upgrade to Firefox 11, and try starting, again using the new profile. If everything works, then you just had a corrupted profile, and you can read Recovering important data from an old profile, which explains how to transfer your data from your old one to your new profile.
Let me know if this helps!

• Firefox 3.6 starts in taskbar mode, not normal screen mode

Firefox opens only as an item on the Windows taskbar, instead of in "normal" screen mode. I then have to click on the taskbar item to get Firefox to open in normal screen mode.
By normal screen mode, I mean the mode where Firefox fills up part of the computer screen and Firefox can then be resized or moved around the screen as one desires. I am not talking about opening Firefox in what is variously called "full screen," F11, or maximized mode --- and I do not want Firefox opening in such a mode.
I have a wide screen monitor which I use to open and view several software programs at the same time, something which is very handy when you want to compare information from a program on one's computer with information from a Web site, and I need Firefox to open in normal screen mode to permit me to do this multiple program viewing.
I have tried the following plugins , but they either do not solve my problem, or only allow me to start Firefox in full screen mode:
- AutoHide
- Full Fullscreen
- FullerScreen
I have tried searching the Firefox help database, and have done a more general internet search using Google, and have not found any information on this problem.
Is there a Firefox configuration setting I can make to direct Firefox to always open in normal screen mode?

Reply to Cor-el's June 6th message: I created a desktop shortcut and tested it a few times, both various times during computer sessions and a few times just after I had powered up my desktop computer. The shortcut always opens Firefox in "normal screen mode." I also tested opening Firefox from the Start button menu item I have had for several years. The menu item also always opens Firefox in "normal screen mode."
It is only when I use the Web/Home button on the Microsoft internet keyboard that Firefox opens in "taskbar mode." Also, this problem has only been occuring for the past 6 or 7 months. Before that, I could always open Firefox 3 in "normal screen mode" using the Web/Home button.
Note to the other eight people who also indicated they have this problem: My version of the problem seems to be with Firefox's interaction with the software for the Microsoft internet keyboard. I would appreciate it if you could post a reply to this discussion informing everyone whether you have this Firefox startup problem when you use a dedicated keyboard key, or if you have the startup problem when you use just a desktop shortcut or a Start button menu item. Thank you.

• Firefox does not start for very long after clicking!!If another browser is opened Firefox opens after that.

Firefox does not open after clicking on the Firefox icon on my desktop. Occasionally it opens after a very long time and that also a number of pages open at the same time equal to the number of times hat I clicked the icon trying to open. If I open another browser like Google Chrome after trying to open Firefox then Firefox follows it to open much quicker after Google chrome opens.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:<br>
<br><br>
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Thank you.

when i run it it asks if i wawnt to start a new session and when i click on any of the choices it hangs and nothing happens.
even in safe mode when it is supposed to start it stil hangs and no window is oppened...
this happened when i updated to firefox 2.0.0.4...
Make sure firefox is actually stopped (check "ps axww" output for it). Kill it if it's still running somewhere.
Check your firefox profile area for files named "lock" and ".parentlock". Delete them if you find any.

• Firefox does not start at all

I cannot use Firefox at all now. It simply will not start up. I've been through the troubleshooting section and it appears something was corrupted when it closed. However, the advice to create a new profile can't help either as it won't let me.
I have various saved information for websites which I don't have to hand elsewhere, so really need Firefox to work. Is there any way of solving this?
