[SOLVED] freeimage: /usr/lib/libfreeimage.so.3 exists in filesystem

Issue:
I can't upgrade.
$ pacman -Syu
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
freeimage: /usr/lib/libfreeimage.so.3 exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded
I check whether a package, possibly from AUR, is responsible:
# pacman -Qo
error: No package owns /usr/lib/libfreeimage.so.3
No.
Apparently this happened to other users as well. I was recommended the following solution:
$ pacman -Sf freeimage

$ pacman -Ql libpng|grep /lib/
libpng /usr/lib/
libpng /usr/lib/libpng.a
libpng /usr/lib/libpng.so
libpng /usr/lib/libpng14.a
libpng /usr/lib/libpng14.so

A tip: run pacman -Qo on the file in question, either you put that symlink there yourself or strange things are happening on your system.

    So, I'm having the same problem.  I'm relatively new to Arch: I've  just been using  it a month or two, and I'm not entirely sure what the wiki is telling me to do when it says to "rename" the file.  Would you please elaborate for me?  I would really appreciate your help.

  • [SOLVED] Error "libpng12: /usr/lib/libpng.so.3 exists in filesystem".

    I've just tried to install the stable "google-chrome" package from AUR with the command.  I have all of the dependencies already installed except for these two:
    - libjpeg6 (building from AUR)
    - libpng12 (package found)
    When the package manage tries to install "libpng12-1.2.43-1", I get the following error:
    error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    libpng12: /usr/lib/libpng.so.3 exists in filesystem
    Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    According to the file manager (Thunar), the file /usr/lib/libpng.so.3 is a link to /usr/lib/libpng.so.
    This is probably a silly question (as I'm a clueless newbie!) but... can I just delete this link and expect the installation of libpng12 to replace it so that everything will still work...?
    Thanks in advance :-)

    Same happened to me.
    I never installed anything manually, and I also had that issue.
    So the explanation given in the link I gave above is more probable, at least in my case.
    Otherwise, simply removing the conflicting file is in my opinion the easiest and safest way.

    I hate blanket advice like this without explanation. Forcing is not usually a good idea. Why not something more like this:
    Since there is only one file that is conflicting, you can manually delete it and then try the upgrade again. If there were quite a few files that conflicted, you should be sure you know what you are doing and then pacman -Sf just that one package, and then your normal -Sy will work fine.
    i just rephrased what the maintainer of the package said on the mailing list http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev … 05907.html giving the two imo crucial pointers. users are responsible for maintaining their own system.

    FYI: archlinux is widely known for our excellent wiki.  Be sure to check there and search the forums before starting new threads.  Many problems can be solved with a good search.
    As a second FYI, I don't know if the use of the manjaro boards (linked in OP) was just a coincidence of what your previous search gave you or if you are using Manjaro.  If it's the latter there are many differences between Manjaro and Archlinux.  In this case they are similar enough to share a solution, but in other cases we would be unable to help you here.  In short, if you are using Manjaro, be sure to ask on their forums if you have future problems.

    On my system, that file IS a symbolic link:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so -> /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1*

    [Aside: I know that the "Aws" isn't English but I hardly ever pass LC_ALL=C myself just because so little is translated into my interface language . Dates is almost it. ]
    I would try reinstalling libcl and take it from there.

  • [solved] netctl (/usr/lib/network/network) fails at boot, sometimes

    Hi,
    Since I reinstalled a new HD in my old laptop (8 years old) I have a problem with my netctl-profile: in about 1 in 4 boots the wireless does not connect. I appreciate it if someone could take a look at what happens, because I cannot seem to find the cause because the logs and errors do not give much information.
    Some general info:
    1) Wireless interface is wlan0; I turned off dynamic naming of systemd/udev. Network driver is RT2500pci.
    2) I use an old kernel version, 3.3.8, because any newer version effectively hard blocks the radio signal without any possibility to change this (rfkill etc).
    3) The power saving option of the network interface must be off. An udev rule does this effectively.
    4) The ip link of the wireless interface must be off before netctl can start the network profile.
    5) When the connection fails, I enter "ip link set wlan0 down" and then start the network profile by entering "netctl start Sorryvoordehobo". This *always* works.
    The following logs and outputs perhaps give information about the issue. Particularly the last might be helpful, because it shows that some authentication indeed takes place, but there is no network.
    netctl profile:

    I don't think there is anything wrong with the kernel. Note that with the previous HD everything started perfectly, with the same kernel version. The new HD is a lot faster as it is an SSD; maybe this has anything to do with the issue?
    To continue: the connection always works when I manually enter "ip link set wlan0 down" and then start netctl. I figured that I should execute this command before netctl starts, but I cannot seem to get this to work. What I tried is to edit /etc/systemd/system/netctl.service, by entering this command with the options ExecStartPre and ExecStartPost (see the two commented lines):
    [Unit]
    Description=(Re)store the netctl profile state
    Before=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    #ExecStartPre=-/usr/bin/ip link set wlan0 down
    ExecStart=-/usr/bin/netctl restore
    #ExecStartPost=-/usr/bin/ip link set wlan0 down
    ExecStop=/usr/bin/netctl store
    KillMode=none
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Nevertheless, with either of these lines uncommented I get boots without the netctl-profile starting.
    In the original post I did not give the output of ip link. So here it is:
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT
    group default
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT group
    default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:40:45:25:dc:4b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DORM
    ANT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:13:d3:6c:f3:78 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    To conclude: authentication succeeds (see the output of dmesg), but I do not seem to get an IP-address (see above). But I have no idea why, and the error messages are not very clear.
    I am still figuring out what happens here, but maybe somebody knows what goes wrong here? Thanks!

    can't update kernelheaders caus that file exist issue!
    kernel-headers: /usr/include/linux/ivtv.h exists in filesystem

    Find out which package it belongs to (pacman will do this for you), then report it on the bugtracker, if it hasn't already been reported.

  • [SOLVED] error pacman: /var/cache/pacman/pkg exists in filesystem

    Hi guys, yesterday night I tried to update my system and I got the following error which seems weird:

    It seems weird to me because it conflicts to the whole folder and not to any specific package. Any clue, what is going on and how to solve it?

    yes I have it in a different partition and then I have symilinked it
    I'd have thought it would have been better to set a different directory for the pacman cache, mounting the partition to that through /etc/fstab and using the CacheDir variable in /etc/pacman.conf, but I'll leave that to your judgement.
    If you don't want to do that, then I'll leave someone else to put up a solution (my brain's screaming bind mounts for some unknown reason).
    So, you are saying that I should enable the CacheDir in /etc/pacman.conf and point it to the partition where I have now the pacman cache.

  • [Solved]Can't install Thunar, 'index.theme exists in filesystem' error

    Hi,
    I'm trying to install Thunar via 'pacman -S thunar'.   The packages downloaded fine, but after that, I get this output:
    error: could not prepare transaction
    error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    hicolor-icon-theme: /usr/share/icons/hicolor/index.theme exists in filesystem
    Errors occured, no packages were upgraded.
    Any idea what's wrong?   I would simply go and remove the conflicting file, but I don't know if anything's using it.   I'm using a almost-fresh install of Arch with Openbox.

    Thanks for the advice - I made a backup of the file just in case before deleting it, and Thunar installed fine after that.   Nothing seems broken (yet).
    Thanks again!

    Recently I did have a problem with my pacman DB files over here but I fixed that. I also tried now making a new empty /var/lib/pacman/sync directory but the output is the same as above.
    I tried Googling for this issue but I am not succeededing.
    Can anyone advise what I can do to troubleshoot this?

    Thank you for that link.
    I checked the first two  /usr/bin/ldbadd and /usr/bin/ldbdel and no package owns them. So I ran:
    sudo pacman -S --force lib32-libdbus
    because now I got:
    :: Replace lib32-dbus-core with multilib/lib32-libdbus? [Y/n]
    because I just enabled multilib in order to upgrade skype (which worked). Anyhow, the install of lib32-libdbus worked fine, but
    pacman -Syu
    still gives all the errors above. Should I try to rename all those files?
    Your title however is misleading - nothing says files are missing, the problem is those files are already there but pacman doesn't know why.
    Well, I also see this:
    error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/ldb-1.1.16-1/desc: No such file or directory
    as well as another. So something does appear to be missing to me.
