[solved] fsck and encrypted /home

Hello,
After testing arch for some weeks, I made the "final" switch this week-end: I moved my LUKS encrypted /home from ubuntu tu arch. During this process I had a problem with fsck on my encrypted /home. I put 0 in /etc/stab to disable fsck:
/dev/mapper/home /home ext3 defaults 0 0
So my question is: is it possible to activate fsck on my /home at boot time ? Or should I let this as it is ?
Thanks,

I don't remember exactly but there was fsck in the error message during the boot, it was not possible to boot. But I have just tested again with fsck and it works well !
So this error was maybe not due to fsck (I had various issues with crypttab options, qwerty/azerty passphrase, etc.)  ... but I remember that before deactivating fsck the system was not booting, after it was.
Anyway, now it works :-)

  • [solved] how to easy encrypt HOME\USER folder?

    Hi Amigos!
Can somone give me easy step by step guide how to easy encrypt home directory in Linux Arch please?
I spent all day to try encrypt home directory (how I did it before in Debian) I used encyptfs-migrate-home -u [myusername] but after all encyption finished I'm unable to login to KDE to complete encyptfs-unwrap-passphrase script. I got error when KDE runing from xserver: call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?)
    Realy approciate your help.

    Disk Encryption
I found those two to be immensely helpful in learning about encryption on Arch Linux.
Although it looks like you might actually want this (ECryptfs ArchWiki).  I use the dm-crypt/LUKS method, but the ArchWiki for ECryptfs looks like it has a good amount of info.
Just as a heads up, be sure to search the ArchWiki thoroughly and look up what you're trying to do in general (encryption) first when you're trying to solve a problem.  The ArchWiki is very detailed and helpful.
Thank you! Can I encrypt by use dm-crypt/LUKS method whole particion in few steps? Do you know does posible to clone hdd after full encryption?

  • Systemd doesn't umount (encrypted) /home and /tmp on shutdown

    Hi all,
as this is my first post in this BBS, I hope I'm actually posting in the correct forum. I also did some research but couldn't really find answers.
I have a problem with systemd on shutdown. It doesn't unmount my encrypted home partition (and does not close the LUKS partition) and the /tmp partition. The corresponding output from journalctl would be this:

Now, with the usual sysv-init this wouldn't be a problem but with systemd (which I'm new to) this poses a problem. I don't know where to start debugging this issue, really. I haven't found a way to run a script directly before and after the umount.target units starts so I can't really see which files are open or what the problem is at this point.
Is it possible to drop to a shell on such errors and inspect the problem manually? Or does anyone have a suggestion why systemd doesn't want to unmount these filesystems?
    Here's my /etc/fstab:
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

If you need more information, please do tell! Thanks in advance.

I think the /home part of the issue for me is at least partially due to how I have mpd configured.  I start it with my X session and it persists after I log out, keeping a few files in my home folder open.  If I make sure it is not running, log out to LightDM, and use its menu to reboot, I do not get a journal message about /home.  If I kill mpd, but instead issue a `systemctl reboot/poweroff` command from a terminal in X, the problem returns.  Is this normal?  I guess I expected everything to be automatically cleaned up.
/tmp, on the other hand, remains a mystery.  If I remove it from my /etc/fstab - to use the default tmp.mount (tmpfs) systemd provides - the problem goes away.  But if I keep it as is, and do something silly like replace /bin/umount with this:
    #!/bin/sh
    /bin/test "$1" = "/tmp" && /bin/date -Ins >> /umount-tmp.log
    /bin/test "$1" = "/tmp" && /bin/lsof /tmp >> /umount-tmp.log
    /bin/umount.real "$@"
all I get is a list of times.
Also, I tried following the steps here (Shutdown Completes Eventually), but the output mostly mirrors what I get from journalctl:

  • [SOLVED] Running Systemd service on login (encrypted home partition)

    Hi,
I have a dm-crypt/LUKS encrypted home partition that's mounted via PAM on login. I'm trying to use a systemd service (profile-sync-daemon), but the service tries to start and access the home partition before the partition is mounted. The service does seem to start successfully, but it doesn't gain access to necessary files on the home partition and malfunctions later on. Is there a sane hack to somehow delay the start of the service until the relevant partition gets mounted (basically after login)? Manually starting the service after login works just as intended in this case - I'm just looking for a way to automate this process.
I have an idea of starting the service via Openbox autostart, but I've currently failed in my attempts.

Things got quite complicated and hacky as I researched this so I went out of the box a bit (or took the easy way out, whichever you prefer) and reinstalled Arch with a full disk encryption. All is fine now and I also expect to see less problems overall in the future. If anyone wants to continue researching this it would probably be a good idea to start a new thread.

  • [solved] Encrypted Home

I played two hours two day i think to get a encrypted home ;D
So that's what i got before:
I saw an article to encryptfs in the wiki which was linked to http://sysphere.org/~anrxc/j/articles/e … index.html,
a very helpfull guide, but when i added the /etc/mtab line to /etc/fstab and rebooted the system always hang up at mounting the stuff, what did i made wrong?
I have an Lightdm Setup, created today,
How could I get an encrypted Home which would be mounted, when I log in? Or when the System Boots up? I got it mounted manually, but not automatically
Another thing I saw in a Ubuntu wiki was
    adduser --encrypt-home <User>
So, would be very cool If someone could help me guys, and remember you rocks.

I wrote replicate it, not just copy/paste, and then I added an example. One key option is noauto so system doesn't attempt to mount it early in the boot, there is nothing in the kernel keyring at that time.

It's the same way as any other login manager. You have to come up with your own solution. Be it pam_mount, be it your shell initialization which does it, be it the login manager it self through some functionality which allows executing commands after a succesful login.

  • [SOLVED]Incorrect mountpoint for /home and /boot

    Hello Archers,
I'm new to Arch, if you find my question is so dummy, let me know
I have manually setup the partition like this:
    1. sdb1 NTFS with boot flag toggle, primary (My existing Windows XP)
    2. sdb2  with boot flag toggle, primary (will be used as /boot), type 83
    3. sdb5 logical (will be used as swap), type 82
    4. sdb6 logical (will be used as /), type 83
    5. sdb7 logical (will be used as /home), type 83
    6. sdb8 logical NTFS
I have a small problem when installing Arch, it's about setting up filesystem and mountpoint.
The installer asked me to select the swap, I chose sdb5, for / I chose sdb6, and it asked me to select additional partition to be mounted under new root, I chose sdb5 with the mount point /boot, sdb7 for /home. The installer show a summary of the filesystem and mountpoint before it makes changes to the hdd, everything is correct. But when it makes changes to my hdd, it said that it make a mountpoint at /mnt/boot and /mnt/home.. It should make mountpoints at /boot and /home respectively. Why does it add a prefix /mnt to my custom mountpoint?
It seems to be a bug in the installer.
    Any help are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tinh

If so, the message generated by the installer is confusing, it need to be fixed to save some posts like this on the forum:D
I'm not at that computer right now, so I cannot verify this. I will verify this problem in the evening and report back.
    Thanks for a quick reply.

  • [SOLVED] /boot and /home in /

Hello, i don't exactly know how to explain this, it's the first time, yesterday, I was re-installing Arch, and everything ok, but know I see that the partition /home and /boot did not mount as always, i have to mounted and put the passwd to be able to enter them, i don't know how to make the /boot partition "invisible" and the /home to be inside the /.
I don't know if I explain this well and if someone has gone through this could help me please, i don't have the time to do another install.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] full disk encryption

    Hi,
i have bought myself a new laptop and i want to install arch with full disk encryption on it. I tried to do the installation in virtual machine to see how it works. I have followed the wiki (installation guide and LUKS).
    my setup:
    /dev/sda1 unencrypted /boot    /dev/sda2 encrypted /     /dev/sda5 encrypted /home      /dev/sda6  encrypted swap
mkinitcpio.conf: HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi  sata encrypt filesystems usbinput fsck"
    syslinux.cfg: APPEND cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:cryptroot root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot ro
    fstab: /dev/mapper/cryptroot    /     ext4    rw,relatime,data=ordered      0  2
after reboot i got these messages: scrot
Any idea what have I forgot or did wrong?
    Thanks

I'm no expert on those things, although i have to ask if you did use LVM along with LUKS ?
According to wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … _LVM_setup for volume to mount early in boot process you have to add "lvm2" hook in mkinitcpio.conf.
you need to add lvm2 only if you use LVM on LUKS on vice versa. I did not used LVM, so it wasnt necessary for me...
Anyway... this thread wont be much useful... can i delete it?

after the last Yosemite update on my MacBook pro I turned the FileVault on, now my Mac is freezing all the time and encrypting the drive looks like going to last forever and I am unable to use my MacBook pro what must I do???!!!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Suspend to ram and encryption

    Hi,
I installed Arch on my netbook with LUKS encryption on the /home partition.
I frequently use suspend to RAM on this netbook, but I find quite insecure the fact that if I suspend the netbook and then resume later, an attacker could have access to all my data unencrypted.
What would be the proper way to use suspend to RAM and encryption?
Would it be possible to prompt for a passphrase to mount the /home encrypted partition
    when waking up from suspend?

I suppose you are too much, you really shouldn't hold your breath
If there is any option for changing where the memory is remapped to you may want to try a few different values and see if it makes any difference.

  • HT1430 my iphone 4 stopped working suddenly....i held the on button and the home button at the same time and it cam on...is this a fault as i cant have my phone switching off randomly?

my iphone 4 stopped working suddenly....it wouldnt charge or anything...i was told to push the on button and the home button at the same time and it came back on.
is this a fault with the iphone????
i cant have my phone switching off randomly...any help please...thankyou.

sometimes it happens, a hard reset will sometimes solve the issue.
If the issue starts happening more often, I would consider restoring the device to factory settings to install clean software. If the issue still persists after that, the device might need a hardware repair.

    Good luck

  • [Solved] Mount LUKS encrypted hard drive at boot

    Hi,
This is driving me nuts. I'm getting angry to be honest.
I encrypted my brand new WD portable hard drive with LUKS + dm-crypt and I can now normally map and mount it with the following commands:
    sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc1 WesternDigital
    [Enter Passphrase]
    sudo mount /dev/mapper/WesternDigital /media/WesternDigital
I would like to map and mount it at boot time (where I should be prompted for the passphrase), so I edited:
    /etc/crypttab
    WesternDigital /dev/sdc1 none luks
    and:
    /etc/fstab
    /dev/mapper/WesternDigital /media/WesternDigital ext4 defaults,noauto,noatime 0 0
During boot I get some errors regarding the decrypting or mapping of WesternDigital that fails but it's too fast to note down something (and, as you probably know, there's no known way to log boot messages on Arch...)
After boot if I try to manually mount /media/WesternDigital I get a message saying /dev/mapper/WesternDigital does not exist.
So I guess the problem is in the mapping phase and thus in the /etc/crypttab file.
I can't find anything in the internet but maybe I'm missing something very basic (a daemon, a module?).
Any help is indeed very appreciated, thank you.

Ok, it's solved. I tried many different configurations of /etc/crypttab, /etc/fstab, /etc/mkinitcpio.conf /etc/rc.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst and I finally found the right setup.
I'm not sure of what was wrong in the first place so I'll just post my current working configs for future reference.
    /boot/grub/menu.lst
Doesn't need to be edited at all (ignore the above post).
    /etc/rc.conf
You don't need to add any module here because the dm-crypt and dm-mod modules are loaded thanks to the encrypt hook.
    /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
The HOOKS line should include usb, usbinput (probably) and encrypt. usb must precede encrypt that must precede filesystems:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb usbinput keymap encrypt filesystems resume"
    /etc/crypttab
    WesternDigital /dev/sdX ASK
Do not insert 'luks', 'retry=X' or other kind of options (you can find this kind of options in many tutorials and howtos). That was one of my problems I guess.
    /etc/fstab
    /dev/mapper/WesternDigital /media/WesternDigital auto defaults,noatime 0 0
    Note
I'm not sure if this has been helpful or not... however I was able to get it to work after following the advice found here.
    Cheers,

  • Is it possible to install Arch with encrypt $HOME?

    Hello,
I'm going to buy a new laptop and i'd like to install Archlinux into it.
Ubuntu 9.10 gives you the choice to encrypt your home directory during installation.
Is it possible to do the same with Arch?
I read the WIKI about encryptions and it looks pretty "hard" to do it...?
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Dieter@be wrote:that information is outdated.  Since 2009.08 you can do encryption and lvm with the arch installer.
I did not see that while installing - the encrypted $HOME with ecryptfs I mean.
    Did I overlook it?
    (I used the netinstall.iso)
anyway - with the help of the two guides mentioned by anrxc (and another post on the subject here in the forums) I got it working.
After setting up a group "ecryptfs", adding the user to it, then having the PAM-Rules ready and the ecryptfs module loaded it was then as simple as typing:
    ecryptfs-migrate-home -u $USER
The PAM-Rules as they are now:
    /etc/pam.d/login
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth required pam_securetty.so
    auth requisite pam_nologin.so
    auth required pam_unix.so nullok
    auth optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
    auth required pam_tally.so onerr=succeed file=/var/log/faillog
    # use this to lockout accounts for 10 minutes after 3 failed attempts
    #auth required pam_tally.so deny=2 unlock_time=600 onerr=succeed file=/var/log/faillog
    account required pam_access.so
    account required pam_time.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    #password required pam_cracklib.so difok=2 minlen=8 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3
    password optional pam_ecryptfs.so
    #password required pam_unix.so md5 shadow use_authtok
    session required pam_unix.so
    session optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
    session required pam_env.so
    session required pam_motd.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    session optional pam_mail.so dir=/var/spool/mail standard
    session optional pam_lastlog.so
    /etc/pam.d/gdm
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth requisite pam_nologin.so
    auth required pam_env.so
    auth required pam_unix.so
    auth optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
    auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    session required pam_unix.so
    session optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
    session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start
    password required pam_unix.so
    password optional pam_ecryptfs.so
Seems to work well so far - only compiling software from AUR has failed sometimes - maybe some mount-options not suitable for "fakeroot"?
I just put the build-directory outside of the encrypted $HOME and symlinked to it - then it worked.
...my first 4 days with ARCH - coming from Gentoo, which I used solely for at least the last 4 years - and I like it and intend to stay with it
I did try Mint (Ubuntu) - thats how I came to want to have my $HOME encrypted with ecryptfs.
But I was not quite happy with it and now I'm here with ARCH.
    Cheers

  • Hone turned off . i tried several times to turn it on but i doesnt work even by using the power and the home button. what should i do ?

ive got the iphone 5s 4 weeks ago.today the screen turned blue and the phone turned off . i tried several times to turn it on but i doesnt work even by using the power and the home button. what should i do ?

    Hi vanessato,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend these troubleshooting steps if your iPhone does not turn on.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Best,
    Jeremy
