  • [SOLVED] Can't initialize LVM partitions

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on LVM. I'm tring to install Arch using the same partition setup I already have for Ubuntu.
For some reason after I load dm-mod module the LVM partitions do not appear in /dev/mapper the /dev/{$VG_NAME} directory also does not exist.
If I do lvscan I see all of my logical volumes. I tried to do partprobe but it didn't help.
I can't recreate the VG because I'll lose all my data in /home and unfortunatly I don't have a place to back it up.
I'm using the archlinux-2008.06-ftp-x86_64.iso the md5sum matches so there is no problem with the installer.
Does any one know how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

also, there is an option to automatically start logical volumes at boot-time in /etc/rc.conf:
    USELVM="yes"
Did you also put your root partition on LVM? Then you'd better add the "lvm2" hook to $HOOKS in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, make sure your boot-partition (if you have one) is mounted read-write, and run as root:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
If your root is not on LVM, the mkinitcpio step is unnecessary

  • [SOLVED] linux-ck with LVM on encrypted block device

    Hi,
Following all the good things I've read about the linux-ck kernel, I have tried to install the atom version from repo-ck on my netbook.
I have an encrypted block device which is used as a PV for LVM. My root partition is a LV on the associated volume group.
With the linux-ck kernel, my root partition is not detected (it says waiting for /dev/sda2, which is the encrypted PV).
After diffing the stock arch .config and the -ck .config, I saw that some things like crypto are compiled as modules in -ck.
I tried rebuilding the linux-ck init image with all theses modules in the MODIULES section of mkinitcpio.conf (MODULES="udlfb dm_crypt cryptd sd_mod dm_mod ablk_helper aes_i586 aes_generic"), but it hasn't helped.
    What am I missing ?

My /boot/grub/menu.lst CK entry was loading the wrong init image... I had the epiphany after typing my post, so maybe it wasn't completely useless. I need to get a rubber duck

  • [SOLVED] Encrypt-Hook with LVM-on-Crypt fails to encrypt root part...

    Hi,
I think that since the mkinitcpio (0.14.0-1) update (and the regeneration of the initramfs for my kernel) the encrypt hook doesn't work anymore. (At least for me)
I have my root filesystem in a LVM, which physical volume is encrypted with luks.
Here are my hooks from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:

Now, this will activate all lvm volumes regardless of lvm.conf, but it suits my needs for now.
This solution didn't work for me.
On boot time I was not asked to enter a password for the encrypted partition.
That's the reason I thought it was the encryption hook.

  • [Solved]Grub booting the wrong partition

Hello everyone and thank you for reading!
This is my first post on this forum (and my first step into arch) so appologies for any newbie symtoms (and bad language).
    My problem:
When I start my laptop (press the power button) my system go's into bios and then boots my HDD (that statement is a bit off I know). After that the system stops and grub rescue starts, saying something about a UUID not found (the UUID is nowhere to be found in my system but it could be one from my previous Ubuntu setup).
    My system:
An Acer Laptop with a Samsung SSD for OS(sda) and Seagate HDD for storage(sdb)
    a 3d gen i5
    glorious Nvidia optimus
some more stuff I think is not importend
    My attempted solutions:
    >Switch the boot-order and put my SSD on top.
My bios only lets me say "Boot from a disk (hdd and ssd)", "Boot from CD", "Network" ,etc.
    >Boot-repair
       Didn't work.
    >try setting this right in grub-rescue
Could work, but I get an error all the time saying "could not find "grub_real_boot_time"" when running "insmod normal".
    >wipe the entire HDD clean.
even with all the HDD partitions deleted, grub still pops up from out of nowhere.
    >remove the HDD
Yes this works the system boots in a blink of an eye.

  • [Solved] Grub not showing windows partition

    Hey all,
So I tried setting up my Win7/Arch dual boot system yesterday and I think I got the partitions right (correct me if I made any mistakes), but GRUB was not showing my main windows partition. I went into the menu.lst file and uncommented what I thought was my windows partition, but turned out to be my Samsung recovery partition. After a reboot, Grub now won't even load and automatically reboots the computer on failing. I'm sure that once I can figure out how to get back into that config file from my installer CD, I will be able to re-comment that windows entry, but I still am unsure how to get it to recognize my main windows partition.
    Here are the partitions:
Name   Flags    Part Type       FS type     [Label]            Size
sda1    (Boot)   Primary           ntfs          [RECOVERY]   16GB

Okay so first I tried recommenting all of the windows boot information with no luck. Then I changed the windows line to "rootnoverify (hd0,1)," also with no luck. Grub still tries to load but crashes and reboots the system before presenting me with any options.
Here are the options, if this helps at all.
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linus
    root (hd0,6)
    kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda5 ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img

  • [SOLVED] Device mapper problem with LVM

I'm trying to mount an LVM partition using the archie livecd (ie kernel 2.6.13).  I've installed lvm2 and device-mapper (1.01.05) but although vgscan gives:
    [root@localhost archie]# vgscan
Reading all physical volumes.  This may take a while...
Found volume group "vg1" using metadata type lvm2
    vgchange gives:
    [root@localhost archie]# vgchange -a y
/proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
0 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg1" now active
    Any suggestions?

    Solved it.
Should have installed the appropriate module:
    # modprobe dm_mod
    # dmsetup ls
now lists the correct virtual devices.

  • [solved] Can't boot with LVM and usb external disk

I successfully installed Archlinux on my first computer, using LVM on two internal Hard Drives.
I'm trying to do exactly the same on my second computer, but I got a problem: the LVM volume is not found at boot, so that the root partition can't be mounted and the boot fails.
The only difference is that, on my second computer, the second hard drive is connected through USB.
Some hints: my second computer boots perfectly with LVM and Ubuntu. Archlinux needs to be configured adequately.
I tried to add rootdelay=30 in menu.lst, but it changes nothing. Of course, in /etc/rc.conf I have USELVM="yes" and in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf I have HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata keymap lvm2 filesystems"
Thank you for helping me to keep Archlinux on my second computer!

    I finally solved my problem!
In the file /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, I modified the MODULES loaded:
    MODULES="pata_acpi ata_generic ata_piix usbcore usb_storage uhci_hcd ehci_hcd sg scsi_mod sd_mod dm_mod"
I also add in the file /lib/initcpio/hooks/lvm2 the line /bin/sleep 10
    /bin/sleep 10
    msg "Scanning logical volumes..."
And finally, I ran the command:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26

  • [SOLVED] grub "unknown filesystem" error for big partition layout

Last night / this morning I copied the root and swap partitions of an Arch Linux installation (stushiba) I had on an old Toshiba hard drive, as well as the "system reserved" and other partitions of a Windows 8 install (stuzate) on another 500GB hard drive, onto a new 2TB Western Digital hard drive using Gparted via an external Arch environment I run off of a microSD card + adapter (sturling).
After doing so, I installed GRUB to the new drive to the best of my ability, but when I try to boot the system with just that drive, this is what I see:
    GRUB loading.
    Welcome to GRUB!
    error: unknown filesystem.
    Entering rescue mode...
    grub rescue>
    Running ls doesn't find anything:
    grub rescue> ls
    (hd0) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1)
    grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos4)
    (hd0,msdos4): Filesystem is unknown.
    grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos3)
    (hd0,msdos3): Filesystem is unknown.
    grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos2)
    (hd0,msdos2): Filesystem is unknown.
    grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos1)
    (hd0,msdos1): Filesystem is unknown.
The system should be on (hd0,msdos3) - it's ext4, and, if I insert the old Toshiba hard disk to the system and select that as my boot device in BIOS, it boots from the partition on the old drive's grub menu, into the partition in the new drive (because they have the same UUID), so the partition's definitely readable/bootable. (I've tried both regenerating the grub menu and installing grub from this boot scenario, with no change.)
(That said, if I enter a console on my system with a working GRUB installation and do an ls on that partition, I get more "unrecognized filesystem" messages.)
Once the new partition had loaded, I ran
    sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and rebooted, but GRUB was still broken.
I tried fixing this by rebooting into the latest installation media, with only the new hard drive plugged in, and running
    mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
    arch-chroot /mnt
    modprobe dm-mod
    grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
But that still hasn't fixed anything: I still get the "error: unknown filesystem." message whenever I try to do anything in GRUB.
    My /boot/grub/grub.cfg: http://sprunge.us/RMeD
    Help!

  • [SOLVED] KVM Virtual machine using virt-install on a LVM partition

    Hello,
I am far from an expert, and I am trying to build a virtual machine (debian squeeze) on my Arch 64 bits host. The VM will serve as a server with usual services (http, mail, ftp, media server etc). This is only for my own purpose and I do it as a hobby.I have no obligation to success, and more important I want to understand everything i do. I have some doubts, so why my post here.
I want to install the VM on a LVM partition.
-I first create successfully a LVM partition on /dev/sda4
    $fdisk -l /dev/sda
    /dev/sda4 1925115904 2949116309 512000203 8e LVM Linux
I will install the VM (named "daffodil") on a 200G Logical Volume on groupe vg0
    $ lvcreate –n lv_daffodil –L 200G vg0
    Logical volume “lv_daffodil” created
Now I need to create the VM. I want to use virt-install IN COMMAND LINE. After days an days of reading (and headache), here is what i think is the correct command :
    virt-install --connect qemu:///system --name=daffodil --ram 8192 --cpu host
    --disk path=/dev/vg0/lv_daffodil,size=200,bus=virtio,sparse=false,format=raw --cdrom /var/lib/libvirt/images/isofiles/debian-6.0.4-amd64-netinst.iso
--description="daffodil (debian squeeze) - vm guest on host magnolia" --graphics vnc --os-type=linux --os-variant=debiansqueeze
    --network bridge:br0 --video=vga --hvm --accelerate
    So my questions :
Is the command correct and academic?
I think size=200 is maybe not needed, as the LV has already be created. Right?
format=raw seems weird to me and not needed. Right?
My host has 16G RAM. Shall I put 16 as --ram argument or stay with 8 ?
How about the filesystem? I want an ext4. Shall I create it on lv_daffodil BEFORE the install or will I do it under the install process when partitioning?
Any advantage in creating smaller than 200G logical volume, even if I want my VM have enough space (The whole HD is 2T)?
Not sure about the --accelerate argument
    Any hint for optimization?
As a n00b ++, will I be able to manage SELinux on my server, as it seems a litle bit tricky?
    what about --noautoconsole argument?
Thank you for your help and knowledge.

As I didn't have any answer in one week, I suscribed to [email protected]
For those of you interested in KVM, find below a script doing excatly the needed job.
    #!/bin/bash
    #created Thursday April 26 2012
    #following Richard W.M.Jones <[email protected]> advices and script
#this script can be changed according your own need. This one will
#install a debian VM called daffodil on a LVM partition, with 2 CPU, 8192 RAM
    # Script used to install VMs.
    # You have to lvcreate the disk first!
    # lvcreate -L sizeG -n $name vg_data
    set -e
    name=daffodil
    cpus="--cpu=host --vcpus=2"
    disk="--disk path=/dev/vg0/lv_daffodil"
    location="--cdrom /var/lib/libvirt/images/isofiles/debian-6.0.4-amd64-netinst.iso
    type="--os-type=linux"
    variant="--os-variant=debiansqueeze"
    graphics="--graphics spice"
    bus="virtio"
    network="--network bridge=br0"
    virt-install -n $name -r 8192 \
    $name $cpus $type $variant $disk $location $graphics $bus $network
To answer to some of my queries in first post:
no need to give the size as I want to use the full lvm I created first. Virt-install will pick up the size
the filesystem will be created during install
CPU amount should be less than the host, as well as CPU numbers.
--accelerate argument is no more needed
spice give usually better graphic results than vnc

  • [SOLVED] Extending an LVM partition

Recently did a fresh install of Arch, using encryption with LVM on top and Gnome as the desktop. Soon after I had a pop up warning on logging in about there only being 100Mb left on /usr. So I extended the /usr group by 1Gb with the command: " lvextend -L4G /dev/base/usr ", the original size was 3Gb.
So now lvscan shows me this:
    [root@kaminari /etc]# lvscan
    ACTIVE '/dev/base/tmp' [500.00 MiB] inherit
    ACTIVE '/dev/base/var' [2.93 GiB] inherit
    ACTIVE '/dev/base/usr' [4.00 GiB] inherit
    ACTIVE '/dev/base/root' [1000.00 MiB] inherit
    ACTIVE '/dev/base/home' [390.62 GiB] inherit
Great it's apparently 4Gb, but I still get this pop up warning about there being not enough room on /usr.
    [root@kaminari /etc]# df -h /usr
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/base-usr 2.9G 2.7G 93M 97% /usr
The above shows something isnt quite right!  Where am I going wrong?

  • Weird problems with recovery partition

Hi. I just got a new X1 Carbon a few days ago. When trying to install Ubuntu, I messed up the bootmgr. At that point I still had the option F11 for recovery on startup, but choosing it did not give any results and after a restart, the option was gone. When researching the problem, I found this thread:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Need-help-with-recovery-partition-create-recov...
Since my recovery partition Q was untouched, the steps described in the thread allowed me to restore partitions S and C. So far so good, but now the problems start.
First, the letters of the partitions get messed up after every reboot. I assign Windows7_OS the letter C, SYSTEM_DRV gets S, and Lenovo_Recovery gets Q. Diskpart then lists the drives with correct letters. But after a reboot, they're back to D,C,E, respectively.
Then, when I boot the Windows recovery disk from a usb stick, it correctly recognizes that Windows is installed on drive D. It suggests that there are startup problems, which I tell it to fix. After the next reboot, it does not warn me about startup problems. When I then go to command prompt and enter
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    bootrec.exe /fixboot
then the Windows recovery disk commits suicide. It seems to attempt to fix its own bootmgr. At the moment, both usb stick and hard disk run with grub (Windows recovery on a multiboot installed by YUMI). After I run the commands above, the hard disk still runs with grub, but the usb stick now has bootmgr and fails to boot. I have tried this several times, each time recreating the Windows recovery disk with YUMI, and every time the same result.
F11 option is of course still gone. At this point I'm out of my wits. Any suggestions are welcome.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In the end I formatted and made a clean install. F11 Option is gone. Recovery partition is still untouched, but I don't think it will be used again. Followed this advice to install a fresh Windows 7 using a usb stick:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164
Since I did not have access to Windows with administrator rights, I had to use Ubuntu to create the bootable Windows stick:
    http://cloud101.eu/blog/2012/03/24/create-a-windows-7-live-disk-from-ubuntu-linux/
The WiFi driver was not included in Windows, so I had to download that in another system, and install manually. From there I could then go online in Windows to download the remaining drivers from Lenovo (after the clean install there's a long list of unrecognized devices).
Since the laptop comes with 4 primary partitions preinstalled I had to merge the SYSTEM_DRV and the Windows7_OS partition in order to create an additional partition for Ubuntu. Then I installed Ubuntu and took control of the startup behavior using EasyBCD.

  • [SOLVED] Grub failing to install on UEFI

I am trying to do a fresh install on my desktop and am running into issues when installing grub.
    My setup is: 3x500GB drives (sda1 is a 1GB partition for /boot/efi, sd[bc]1 raid 1 for swap, sd[abc]2 raid 5 with LVM for /, /home, and /tmp). ASUS m5a97 LE R2.0 motherboard.
I am currently chroot into /mnt, where my / LVM is mounted, I have dm_mod loaded, and I was following the instructions here.
I get an error from grub toward the end saying "Path  `/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot. Installation is impossile. Aborting."  (there's a LOT of output before that because of --debug.
I tried looking around, and I saw some people say that they had success with a fresh install when upgrading, but that doesn't really apply to me as this is already a fresh install.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks in advance!
    David

Thanks for the help everyone!
I find it a very good idea to keep something as /boot/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi (or \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.efi relative to the root of the ESP).  That is the "default" efi application.  It is what is run if you have your machine set to boot in UEFI mode and you choose the disk to boot from (rather than a firmware entry like those created by efibootmgr).  It was put into the spec so that one could boot a removable medium, like a USB flash drive or cdrom, with UEFI. Obviously, a removable whatever is not going to have a firmware entry for it, so there needed to be some kind of standardization on how to make those work.  From there, apparently that idea carried over to the internal devices as well, and now a vast majority of UEFI firmwares use this for all disks, not just removable ones.
Nowadays, I keep gummiboot there.  But when I first started using UEFI, I kept the UEFI Shell v2 there since it that is probably the most versatile thing that could be used as a fallback.  But as long as you have somethign there, in the event that you lose all your firmware entries, this might save your ass.  In my Phoenix bios, the exit and save changes, you would use F10, while a total reset of the bios to defaults is F9... yeah, I reset my bios by accident once.  Having the UEFI Shell in that spot made my life quite a bit easier.

  • GRUB2 with LVM snapshots

Maybe I found a bug or feature in the GRUB2.
I want to create a something like time machine. Install the system on LVM partition, before the full system upgrade, we take a snapshot. If something going wrong we can revert the snapshot with command:
    lvconvert --merge /dev/VolGroup00/snap01.
Of course we can try to boot from LVM snapshot, after a little editing of grub.cnf. For correct work of this mechanism, we must install the system, including /boot, on LVM partition. This should work in theory. In practice, after creating a snapshot the system becomes unbootable. After removing snapshot the system becomes bootable again.
If I use a separate non LVM partition for /boot, everything works, but if the kernel has changed, we can't restore system by merging the snapshot.
Sources of information: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … stallation
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LVM#Important
    Steps to reproduce:
    Boot from archlinux liveCD 2010.05
    modprobe dm-mod
Create single large physical LVM volume and smaller size logical volume (we need some free space on the physical volume to create a snapshot):

    Continue with the installation
    Configure the system:
    set USELVM="yes" in /etc/rc.conf
insert lvm2 in the HOOKS section in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf before filesystems
add dm-snapshot to the MODULES variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Skip the Install Bootloader step and exit the installer.
    Install the bootloader:
    aif -p partial-configure-network # configure the network
    mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
    chroot /mnt bash
    pacman -Sy grub2
    grub-install /dev/sda --no-floppy
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    exit
    reboot
The system boots properly, but it becomes unbootable, after we make snapshot of the lvolsys volume:
    lvcreate --size 100M --snapshot --name snap01 /dev/VolGroup00/lvolsys
If you boot from LiveCD and remove snapshot, the system becomes bootable again.
Please confirm this bug and I'll report on https://bugs.archlinux.org

    This was fixed in 1.99

  • [SOLVED] Cloning boot and var partitions to a new drive for booting

Ok first of all here's my setup:
fakeraid (dmraid) / and home on an OCZ Revodrive
boot with GRUB on a flash drive (since fakeraid doesn't support grub)
var and downloads/media folder on a 500GB WD Caviar drive
When I originally installed Arch I had the Caviar drive in my home server in a RAID5 array, so that's why I opted to install boot and grub on a flash drive simply for booting.  Now that I have the drive in my desktop I've cloned the flash drive's partitions and MBR using dd:
    #dd if=/dev/sde of=~/MBR.img bs=512 count=1
    #dd if=/dev/sde1 of=~/boot.img
    #dd if=/dev/sdc1 of=~/var.img
I then backed up my downloads/media partition, then removed the partition table, then used dd to put the img files on the Caviar drive.
    #dd if=~/MBR.img of=/dev/sdc bs=512 count=1
    #dd of=~/boot.img of=/dev/sdc1
    #dd of=~/var.img of=/dev/sdc2
I also created labels for the filesystems and put those in fstab.
I'm able to mount both partitions, however I can't boot from the drive.  I get a 'grub hard disk error' (no error number) when I put it as my first drive in the BIOS.
I can still use the flash drive as the first hard drive in the BIOS and boot from it, then it mounts the dmraid root partition and boots successfully.  It is also able to mount the var and boot partitions in fstab.
Basically the only problem is that the MBR is somehow wrong.  I then tried booting back into an Arch live USB and installing GRUB from the prompt:
    grub
grub>setup (hd4,0) (in this case the Caviar drive's boot partition was /dev/sde1
So essentially what I'm asking is how GRUB handles the MBR.  Is it specific to the partition table of the drive in which it resides when it's originally installed?  For instance, since I had an 8GB flash drive with 2 partitions when I installed GRUB, is the backed up MBR no good for a 500GB drive with 3 partitions?
I have everything backed up so I can start with a fresh /boot and /var if need be....I'm just not sure where to start.
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I tried to install GRUB from the GRUB shell in a live Arch USB.  It failed on a few non-critical parts, and succeeded on the last part. I'm going to try again shortly, possibly I did something wrong.  GRUB is able to find the stage files using:
    #grub
    grub>find /grub/stage1
    grub> find /grub/stage1
    (hd0,0)
    (hd5,0)
    grub>
(hd0,0) is the desired boot drive, while (hd5,0) is the current bootable flash drive with /boot and GRUB installed.

I'm using dmraid, so just to be clear I've configured the raid using:
    #modprobe dm_mod
    #dmraid -ay
Then I saw the array stored in /dev/mapper/silXXXXX.  I then created partitions for /boot, /, and home.  At that time I was hoping to get GRUB working with the AUR package grub2-dmraid.  I wasn't able to get it working for some time, so I just went ahead and installed boot and GRUB to a separate USB flash drive.
