[solved] HAL fails repeatedly..

My HAL is failing on every boot and if I try to start it manually:
[shane@Shane-Arch log]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
Also... there is something else failing on boot, but it goes too fast.  I can't seem to find a boot-up log.  I'm sure it's somewhere, can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Shane

Hmm... it's not pretty CPU Soft lockups?  But I see nothing about HAL

It's odd, because D-BUS will start but hal will not... Anybody have any suggestions?
    * UPDATE (10/08/08): Did a full system upgrade and removed dbus from daemons array in rc.conf. UDEV EVENTS Processing speed seems to be back to normal.
** SOLUTION UPDATE: After removing custom ntfs-3g fdi policies from /etc/hal/fdi/policy/, hal seems to load without any problems. This seems to be a bug, since my policies were working at one point, and I believe a hal update caused the problem. I'll see if I can track down the exact hal version that it breaks on, and submit a respective bug report for it.
** OFF-TOPIC UPDATE: Using hwdetect --modules to get a modules list, and using these modules in rc.conf with MOD_AUTOLOAD turned off (and also in mkinitcpio.conf and running mkinitcpio -g <path>), seems to have dramatically increased my "Load udev events" processing time. After doing this, my udev speed went from almost 4000ms to literally < 500ms.

you have dbus starting before hal but hal starts debus by default so please try this...
    DAEMONS=(...@acpid @hal @alsa...)
and delete debus from that line.
Removed dbus from the daemons array and hal still won't start. Also, I noticed that the "Loading udev events" portion of the boot process seems to take a lot longer than it used to. Last boot, it took about 19130ms, whereas it used to take < 3000ms. Could these be related?
Also, I ran a full system upgrade, both udev and hal were upgraded.

  • Time Machine fails repeatedly with no problem detected on the external disk

Since a couple of days, Time Machine fails repeatedly, several times a day. I repair the disk with the Disk utility, that finds no error, then I reset Time Machine as indicated, and after one or two successful backups, it fails again, with the following report given by the Time Machine Buddy widget:

I insist, the disk utility doesn't find any problem in the external USB disk. Should I reinstall the OS?
Thanks a lot for any help!

  • Why is Illustrator CC (2014) update failing repeatedly after downloading 100%?

I've been a member of CC for sometime 18 months and normally I have no trouble with updates.
However, this particular update to Illustrator CC fails repeatedly.
I've attempted this update and download more than 8 times.
It shows the download to be 100% complete and then "Update failed" shows up.
Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?
I've just migrated to a newish iMac, could this be a reason?

Have you uninstalled the old versions and used the Cleaner Tool before updating to the new version?
This procedure is recommended after updating Mac OS.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade fails repeatedly

Trying to upgrade from Studio to Studio 2. The install fails repeatedly around disk 2 or 3 (SoundTrack Pro audio content). Message says "Please try installing again). All system specs are good. What might be wrong?

Clean the discs with a DVD cleaner or soft dry cloth.

  • Clean install fails repeatedly

Deleted a CloudDocs folder in Application Support by mistake and reinstalled OS X on my MBP because I kept getting iCloud log-in popups no matter what I did.
Went fine, but I got some new issues and had to do a clean install again. This time I had huge problems formatting the disk as I kept getting errors when trying to format as GUID and Mac OS extended (journaled).
I finally got it to format correctly but the OS X installation fails repeatedly.
Here's a photo of the log:
I'm stuck and I feel like I've tried everything... Thanks for your time. I really hope someone can help me out.

Have no idea what you were doing, so do this:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • ITunes 11.0.2 (Win 7 Pro, 64-bit) previously purchased downloads (cloud) fail (repeat 6x)

Summary:  Under a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) with all patches applied, verified malware free (Sophos rootkit and virus detection tools and a Microsoft Security scan) iTunes fails to download previous purchases and then store/commit them on the computer.
Detailed Description:  What I am presented with is a list of songs that are not on my PC but I can re-download.  I click the litle cloud icon and the download begins.  But after the file downloads it won't process/transfer into my library and cycles through 5 more attempts.  (The little grey Harvey ball  icon starts out empty, slowly fills in a clockwise pattern, and when 100% grey (full) it repeats.
Eventually iTunes gives a non-descriptive failure message.  I'm stuck.
    What I've tried to do:
    I've tried several things, including:
    - Reinstalling iTunes (with reboots inbetween)
    - Turning off then on the iTunes "Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases"
    - Reviewing permissions of iTunes directory (per other Apple KB articles and forum advice)
    - Reviewing iTunes and supporting file folders/directories for missing things like the 'SC info' directory.
    - Exiting iTunes, killing iTunes processes and iTunes Helper, renaming the iTunes folder "OLD-iTunes" and restarting iTunes to create new iTunes subfolders and again testing the downloads from the cloud -- which fail. I then restore my old iTunes directory, exit iTunes (and kill processes) and start iTunes again.
    - Checking IE 10 security settings (even though I'm not using IE 10 as my browser, there are apparently ActiveX and other security setting implications that affect the overall system.  Learned that when initially trying to install iTunes in the first place.)
    - Deauthorizing / reauthorizing the machine
    - Calling Apple Support who couldn't figure it out.
Any ideas that aren't inane or ones already tried above?
    Thanks so much!

Nothing I tried helped.  Apple Support couldn't figure it out.
I suspect it had to do with a security patch that MS recently issued then promptly recalled due to failures it caused on many users' systems.  I am merely speculating, based on some of the odd errors I saw and the timing of the events.
Alongside the iTunes issue, there were other system errors and security problems I had noticed; namely with Java apps and the built-in security controls of the system.  (Again, assuming I was malware-free since I did deep testing with 2 Microsoft tools and some Sophos tools which yielded clean results.)
Nevertheless, I did not solve my problem with technical intelligence.  Instead, I wiped the machine and did a fresh install of Windows 7 and then copied my files back into place.  (I did NOT do a system restore as to avoid reintroducing a problem from a known bad installation.)
That was only a 5 or 6 hour committmenet but "solved" my problem.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless fails after suspending (Realtek 8192se)

This problem is already solved on the first post: I spent so long trying to solve it that I thought people should know the solution.
I have a Lenovo X100e with a Realtek 8192SE wireless card.  I'm running kernel 3.0.  The machine has, since upgrading to the 3.0 kernel had the annoying problem of failing wireless connections after suspending: I'll have a running wireless connection, then suspend the machine, and then wake the machine up and the machine cannot connect to any wireless network (perhaps the same one I was connected to before, in the same place).
    Things that did not work:
Installing the Realtek drivers from their website
Downgrading the kernel from 3.1 to 3.0
    Using wicd instead of networkmanager
    Walking around
    Other distributions
The solution was to put an entry in /etc/pm/config.d/config:
    SUSPEND_MODULES="rtl8192se rtlwifi mac80211 cfg80211"
Now the machine reconnects with no problems.
This may be the solution to the other big problem I was having with the 3.1 kernel: I would suspend the machine by any means and the screen goes black and the machine becomes non-responsive without actually suspending.  I may try upgrading to the 3.1 kernel and adding radeon to the SUSPEND_MODULES list above.

Found out more which might be significant for madwifi users:
According to the wiki I loaded the following modules in rc.conf: ath-hal, ath9k, wlan
Beside this one line in the modprobe.conf should be added: alias ath0 ath_pci. This way wicd as well as networkmanager used ath0 for connecting to wireless.
After the update I noticed that there is another wifi device in ifconfig listed: wlan0. So I suspected that 2 devices pointing at the same hardware may cause the instability, but de-activating one by ifconfig didn't help. Now I noticed by loading the modules one by one that the new ath9k is already defining wlan0 and the wireless starts working without loading the module wlan. It looks stable so far, but if I should be right I'm impossibly the only one having this trouble.
Confirmation would be nice, but I will mark this thread "solved" now.

  • (PS3) GT6 update 1.10 installation fails repeatedly

Hi, I have a serious problem with installing update 1.10. The system downloaded and installed the 2GB installation package but when the game started and the installation script wanted to apply the update the installation failed during the process. The only option was to press OK button but the update procedure started over and over again with the same result. I did a complete restore of my PS3 to its defaults and formatted the disk (full format). Even after that I couldn't update GT6. The game can run without any updates installed. Once I check for updates, the system downloads all 9 packages and installs them. Then I start the game and the update proceduce fails the same way like before the PS3 restoration. How could I solve it?

For those who are still struggling with updating problems...pls try to follow steps mentioned below...at least them worked for me !I found these instructions from elsewhere on this site...--------------------------------Hi mate, sorry to hear of your troubles.   Settle in because I'm about to write a novel.   Seems like you covered most of the big things to try.Unusual that a new formatted HDD is still giving you trouble.Sounds like the issue is probably related to the downloads then, possible packet loss, causing issues with the install. Are you using a wired or wireless connection?Obviously wired is better and you should always use that if possible.Wireless is more susceptible to packet loss during downloads than a wired connection. Do you have a copy of your save file? Are you installing copy that before you try the updates? In other words, any chance the save file is corrupted and causing you issues? Digital download or disc copy?Obviously, also make sure the disc is clean and not scratched, and the laser lens is clean. Only a few things come to mind that you may not have tried. One is downloading the patches in stages.Another is downloading via the new v4.60 XMB option.(Never done it, not sure how it works, but doubtful it will make much difference)The last is an in-game function ... switching off the 'Install Game Data' option.(I'm unsure exactly how this function works) At this stage, considering the game isn't functioning at all, you may as well delete all traces from the HDD.New HDD ... so refomat?Option available from the XMB.XMB ... Settings > System Settings > Restore PS3 System.I believe you will need to update PS3 to v4.60 again.Check HDD looks okay regarding System Software Version and Free Space.XMB ... Settings > System Settings > System Information. Otherwise remove all GT6 files from the console manually. For disc copy   XMB ... Game > Game Data Utility > delete GT6 file.                            XMB ... Game > Save Data Utility > delete both save file (GT6 and GT6 Backup)If digital copy   XMB ... Game > Game Data Utility > delete GT6 file.                             XMB ... Game > delete GT6 icon.                             XMB ... Game > Save Data Utility > delete both save file (GT6 and GT6 Backup)Again, just check HDD looks okay regarding System Software Version and Free Space.  So .... once happy everything is removed, load GT6 onto console. If disc version start the game offline. If digital version download the game only.Start the game offline (or cancel option to Update Software) and confirm it's playing correctly.Play far enough to establish a save file.Quit game, and still 'offline' restart the game and again confirm all is good, and at this point you could consider swithing off the 'Install Game Data' option.Start button > Options > Game Data > Install Game Data.Check link for details.http://www.gran-turismo.com/us/gt6/manual/#!/save_load/autosaveYou may need to manually save to hold this setting change. So you now have a functioning game with a valid save file and the 'Install Game Data' function switched off.  Okay, time to try updates. You could consider doing it in stages. Each patch will download and then install.Once installed, the next patch will begin downloading etc etc.It is possible to cancel out of the download once a file has installed. (circle button) So if it says 'Downloading File 1 of 9' allow for the download and install to finish. When it changes and says 'Downloading File 2 of 9' cancel the process. You should now have updated to the next version ... eg v1.01.You should now be able to play the game (by cancelling the option to Update Software) and check everything is okay. So try updating and installing the first patch file.Check the game is playing correctly. If you have the 15th Anniversary content, you could now consider introducing that the the game data.Access from XMB.XMB ... PSN > Account Management > Transaction Management > Download List. If you have a USB copy of your save file, you could also consider reintroducing that.If you do either of these things, check the game is still playing correctly before proceeding with the other updates. While testing game, you could also consider switching on the 'Install Game Data' option from the in-game menu. You may need to manually save, and then quit and restart game for the function to activate. It's unknown to me exactly how this function works.Whether anything will install immediately after you switch it on, whether it's not until you restart, or whether it will install anything at all, I'm not sure. After giving that a go, you could consider switching it back off again, and manually saving.(As I say, I'm unsure how this function works. Whether this is a worthwhile exercise is perhaps questionable, but apart from wasting a bit of time I see nothing wrong with trying it at each step.)  Then try next patch.Download and install "File 2 of 9'.Cancel download once finished.Check game is playing correctly and manually save.Switch on 'Install Game Data'.Initiate data install, then switch off function and manually save. *Special note for v1.02*There is a known issue for updating forwards from v1.02.Check the link for details.http://www.gran-turismo.com/au/news/00_3266694.html  Continue with 'File 3 of 9'.Repeat process as before. Next patch ... etc etc etc.Checking game and installing data (if available) after each patch. Going roughly from memory ...v1.01 and v1.02 were around 1GB and 1.2GB.v1.03 - 1.06 were all quite small.v1.07, v1.08, and v1.09 were again around 1GB or larger. So you might choose to skip through a few patches part way through if you wish.  As I mentioned earlier, v4.60 introduced a new Game Update function to the XMB.By pressing 'Triangle' while on the GT6 (or any) game icon brings up a menu.On this menu is a new 'Check for Update' option. This allows you to check for updates without launching the game. How it works if it finds an available update I'm not sure. (haven't had a chance to test)So I don't know whether there's any advantage trying to patch GT6 via this option. But it's there if you want to try it out as another alternative.  Obviously, with all that said, there is no guarantee it will work. With a new HDD, a regular full update in one go shouldn't be an issue, so there's a problem somewhere.Maybe the step by step approach will help.Again, and most importantly, wired connection if possible. If no luck it's just a case of try and try again. As you mentioned, using a friends internet, particularly with a different ISP and/or better connection, is a good option.  Please let us know how you get on.Also, please let me know if there's a problem/error/mistake with how I've described any of the procedures. And if you could add anything to that step by step approach, or info. on the XMB 'Check for Updates' function it would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck with it.

  • [solved]script fails when changing profile through powerdevil.

i use ondemand governor and i want to change up_threshold value.
Whenever i change profile through powerdevil up_threshold gets its default vaule of 80.
what i did was to create a script named threshold containing the lines:
    #!/bin/bash
    sudo sh -c 'echo 50 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold'
i have also set through /etc/sudoers that this script is passwordless for my user.
if i run the script, it successfully changes the value. It also runs successfully if i put it in startup.
My problem is that it fails to run when i choose it to run when a profile loads through powerdevil. I am refering to the feature shown below :
at first i thought that this function has a problem. so i chose to run kate, and when i changed profile, kate started immediately. So i guess that there is a problem with my script.
    Any ideas?

I hope someone reads this thread also its already marked as solved...
Anyway, i would like to use CPU frequency scaling, but in the powermanagement settings,
i cant shoose anything for frequency scaling.
What do i have to do to be able to set "ondemand" or "always lowest frequency"?
Wich daemons and/or modules do i have to activate to change the frequency policy?
Would be very nice if someone could help me.

  • Outlook Sync Error SOLVED - Multi-day repeating appointment cannot be converted for use on the Handheld...

*UPDATE 1/23/2009 07:08 AM* This is a partial fix. I no longer think the Recurrence Range is the culprit. It seems the Time Zones features between Outlook & Palm are not cooperating. This explains why my 12 am events are syncing as 6 pm the day before; I live in GMT-6:00 so it's moving my events ahead by 6 hours. Another event I set for 1 pm in Outlook was changed to 7 am on my Treo. I am going to start over and recreate each event, this time setting the Time Zones, which I hadn't done before. I tested it out and it worked with a single event... let's see how long it lasts. I've also found that using 'No Time' on my Treo is not compatible with Outlook. It's better to set a time with 0 minutes duration.
*UPDATE 1/23/2009 04:11 AM* This is a partial fix. My monthly and yearly problematic recurring events are now showing up at 6 pm the day before on my Treo, though my Outlook calendar is fine. I think this has to do with the Recurrence Range Start/End in Outlook, which is set automatically. If only there were a way to change this...
After a WHOLE LOTTA trial-and-error (like 3 days worth), I think I finally solved my OLERR:14-001 issue!
Problem: Syncing Palm Treo 755p calendar with Outlook 2007
    Error Message (simplified):
HotSync session completed with messages on [date] [time]
HotSync session started on [date] [time], and completed in [0] seconds
Outlook Calendar synchronization completed with messages
    Duration: [0] seconds
    Outlook Calendar
The multi-day repeating appointment titled [event] beginning [date] [time] cannot be converted for use on the Handheld. Please divide the appointment up into single-days and re-synchronize.
     OLERR:14-0001
    - Desktop overwrite HH Sync
Note: You will likely have several of these ‘Multi-day’ instances in your hotsync log (I had 58). You may want to change Calendar in hotsync to "Desktop overwrites Handheld" after you get this error, to avoid erasing events while you are fixing this issue. Otherwise, you may have to restore them from a backup copy (if you have one) and start over. You can switch back once you’re through.
Solution: First, I tried this Palm KB Article: http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/NUA/launchKB.asp?c=31167. After this didn’t work for me… I did trial-and-error. I believe the problem is that each recurring event, which you set up as ‘All-day’, must be changed to have a duration of 0 minutes from within Outlook. I was able to change some events directly, but I found that some of the records had corrupted, and would just revert. My fool-proof solution was to recreate EVERY problematic event (yes, one-by-one) using the following steps:
    Open Outlook
Go to your default calendar, where your events are synced
In the top menu choose ‘View’ > ‘Current View’ > ‘Recurring Appointments’
    Open a ‘New Appointment’
Enter subject and other options, such as Categorize, Importance, Time Zones, or Reminder
Make sure starting and ending date & time are the EXACT same
Select ‘Recurrence’ & choose your pattern
I did not choose ‘No end date’ (hence the Palm article), but rather ‘End by:’ and typed in 2031, then pressed tab to auto-generate a suitable end date. I chose 2031 because that is last year my Treo’s calendar goes to. Click OK
Repeat for every event in your error log, until you get a clean "Desktop overwrites Handheld" hotsync (Outlook should be closed when you sync)
Switch Calendar in hotsync back to "Synchronize"
Even though I still get the message OLERR14:001, my syncs are successful. Now I will give my Treo time to see if the issue returns later. Until then, happy Outlook syncing and good luck!

    hello,
if all of your data is on the phone you can change the sync action to handhled overwrites desktop
    how to:
    open palm desktop software
on the top left click on 'hotsync' and then 'custom'
    on the calendar conduit
highlight it and click on 'change'
    then choose 'handhled overwrites desktop'
    hope this will help you

  • [SOLVED] Bumblebee: Failed to initialize GPU with Lenovo ThinkPad W530

    SOLVED: See post #20
After years, I decided to come back to the wonderful distro, Arch and back to the forums. Yay!
However, I installed Arch to my new laptop - Lenovo ThinkPad W530 and it uses NVIDIA Quadro K1000M alongside Intel graphics with Optimus technology. Arch is running fine, but I cannot run applications through optirun and I get:
    [exitium@rambutan ~]$ optirun -vv nvidia-settings
    [ 485.536478] [DEBUG]Reading file: /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf

As seen, it says "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU". I have tried different solutions found from these forums and several other places but none of them have worked - the problem remains same. Does anyone have idea how I could fix this? I read somewhere else that there could be issues with newest nvidia drivers - is this possible?

  • SOLVED: makepkg fails at signing package

    Hi all,
I'm trying to build a package from AUR but makepkg fails to sign the package.
I receive the following message: "==> WARNING: Failed to sign package file." and nothing else.
I have, as far as i can tell, installed all the necessary keys (pacman-key --recv-key and pacman-key --lsign). I even tried to completely reset the keyring  (remove of /etc/pacman.d/gnupg, pacman-key --init, ...) but it does not solve my problem.
I can see the key when issuing pacman-key -l.
Any idea is welcome cause I'm completely loss right now and I fear becoming nuts...

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … g_Packages
That should explain everything you need to sign packages
To sign packages you need your own key, what comes with pacman is the developers' keys for the packages in the repos

  • [SOLVED] CUPS fails to find my USB-connected Lexmark X543dn

    Hi there!
I just installed arch off the netinstall CD. Right now I'm struggling to get it recognize my printer. I fired up rekonq at localhost:631 and clicked my way to Add Printer. When prompted, I provided root's name and password. This brings me to the Add Printer page with the "hourglass-like" circle spinning while it's searching for printers. It doesn't find anything.
At connecting the printer to my USB port I get the following in /var/log/messages.log:
Apr 2 12:14:40 Godot kernel: usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Apr 2 12:14:40 Godot kernel: usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    Apr 2 12:14:40 Godot kernel: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x043D pid 0x0121
    Apr 2 12:14:40 Godot kernel: generic-usb 0003:043D:0121.0004: hiddev1,hidraw0: USB HID v1.00 Device [Lexmark International Lexmark X543] on usb-0000:00:02.2-3/input2
As per http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cups#Kernel_modules I also tried rmmodding usblp. This doesn't change anything in CUPS' web frontend. However, the modules seems to get reloaded:
Apr 2 12:16:45 Godot kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
Apr 2 12:16:45 Godot kernel: usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    Apr 2 12:16:45 Godot kernel: generic-usb 0003:043D:0121.0005: hiddev0,hidraw0: USB HID v1.00 Device [Lexmark International Lexmark X543] on usb-0000:00:02.2-4/input2
    Apr 2 12:16:45 Godot kernel: usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 7 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x043D pid 0x0121
Apr 2 12:16:45 Godot kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp
and it also appears again in lsmod. So I tried blacklisting usblp, which again doesn't change anything in CUPS' frontend. However, it complains in /var/log/messages:
Apr 2 12:18:25 Godot kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
Apr 2 12:18:25 Godot kernel: usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I set cupsd.conf's logging level to debug, which yields the following in errors_log. At 12:22:30 I pointed rekonq at localhost:631/admin, at 12:22:32 I clicked "Add printer":

repeating the last 19 lines every minute. I don't get why it is "requesting-user-name=rufusd", when I log in to localhost:631/admin as root with root's password. Regarding the device you spoke about: when I allow usblp to be loaded, /dev/usblp1 gets created. I assume this is what you are talking about. It's a link to /dev/usb/lp1, the latter of which features permissions of crw-rw---- root:lp. My user is not a member of group lp, I just realize... Is there any advise as to which groups are useful for a single-user desktop PC? Until now, my user is only member of network and <username>
