[SOLVED] I cannot make mounted ext4 partition writeable.

I want to make /dev/sdc2 (mounted on /mnt/SteamLinux) writeable, so I could install Steam games on it.
/etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# /dev/sdb3
UUID=7cfc361a-47e1-45b9-8429-054d31302402 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
# /dev/sdb4
UUID=04b8a615-8738-4d5c-b4de-16a0f92ade4d /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
# /dev/sdc2
UUID=1501a760-5c07-4279-a2c2-9695e08a6cdd /mnt/SteamLinux ext4 defaults 0 0
# NTFS drives
/dev/sda1 /mnt/Blue ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/Black ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
fsck /dev/sdc2 result:
fsck from util-linux 2.22.2
e2fsck 1.42.7 (21-Jan-2013)
fsck.ext4: Permission denied while trying to open /dev/sdc2
You must have r/w access to the filesystem or be root
What should I do to make it writeable without root access?

Mr.Elendig wrote:uhm, just run fsck as root? And for access as a normal user: chown and chmod
Ran fsck as root, it went fine. Remounted /dev/sdc2, then ran
sudo chmod -R +w /dev/sdc2
I assume it's a command to make this partition writeable for regular user. Steam still threw me as readonly.
Got it working by using /mnt/SteamLinux instead of /dev/sdc2.
Steam issue is still not resolved, but it's irrelevant to the thread now... (Steam refuses to download anything to this partition, it returns me as 0MB available space)

  • Cannot make changes to system HD - partition layout greyed out

    Hi!
    I recently reformatted my entire drive and reinstalled Lion with the official Lion USB recovery tool/usb. Now in disk utility the Partition Layout option is greyed out and I can not seem to re partition my disk. I´ve tried repairing my disk rights but still its greyed out.
    I ran a demo of iPartition and this message was flagged:
    "You cannot make changes to the disk from which your system booted.
    To make changes to this disk, you should either boot from an external drive, use Target Disk Mode with another Mac, or create a bootable CD/DVD."
    Does this mean I can only make changes with it when booting with the usb? This doesn´t make sense as it worked on the default startdisk before. Does anyone have solution?

    i_Tim_ wrote:
    It worked with the usb key, thank you!
    You're welcome. Glad that worked for you.
    But isn´t there a way to transfer the rights back to my disk or/and the integrated recovery partition?
    I do not know the process. I suspect you'd get a quick answer by posting in the Lion forums: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
    Good luck to you.

  • [solved] Check EXT4 partition automatically

    Hello everyone,
    I have two EXT4 partition on my HD (sda2 and sda4):
    $ fdisk -l
    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 3264 26218048+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda2 3265 6528 26218080 83 Linux
    /dev/sda3 6529 6590 498015 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda4 6591 19457 103354177+ 83 Linux
    Eventually, sda2 partition (root partition) is checked automatically on boot, but sda4 never checked. On dmesg appears:
    EXT4-fs (sda4): warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended
    On wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fsck) is written:
    The Arch Linux boot process conveniently takes care of the Fsck procedure for you and will periodically check ALL relevant partitions on your hard drive automatically in a scheduled manner.
    Can I turn automatically check on for sda4 partition too? Or I have to do this manually ?
    My fstab:

    Thanks in advance.

    Have a look at the <pass> definition in fstab: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab
    File systems with a <pass> value 0 will not be checked by the fsck utility.

  • [~SOLVED] 1 min hang during boot while mounting xfs partitions (LVM)

    Hi all,
    After the upgrade I did yesterday (which included linux-3.12.8-1 and lvm2), the boot time has increased by 1 minute as the system hangs while mounting two partitions formatted as xfs and residing on logical volumes.
    $ systemd-analyze blame
    1min 13.676s home-VDP76-videos.mount
    1min 13.111s home-VDP76-VBox_VMs.mount

    I have the fsck hook as second-to-last entry in my mkinitcpio.conf, but the fstab entries for these partitions include
    ... xfs defaults 0 0
    so, as far as I undertstand, the partitions should not be checked, am I missing something!?
    I have googled for similar issues but I did not find anything useful, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    edit: I blame the check disk because of what reported on the system journal (note the time stamps):

    edit2: I have freed up almost all space on the video partition and the time for mounting those partitions has now decreased to 8 sec...I will mark the thread as solved, but I still would appreciate an input on the reasons why the partitions are checked regardless of the fstab setting, for example, is this pertinent!?

    exactly..in fact the man page says
    fsck.xfs(8) wrote:fsck.xfs - do nothing, successfully
    so fsck.xfs simply exits with a zero exit status.
    running xfs_check gives
    xfs_check is deprecated and scheduled for removal in June 2014.
    Please use xfs_repair -n <dev> instead.
    and xfs_repair does not find errors on both partitions.
    Still, I do not understand how nothing being done can take up so much time.
    By the way, a short S.M.A.R.T. self-test did not report errors...
    In the meanwhile, there has been another kernel upgrade and the timing issue persists, so I am assuming it has something to do with the last lvm2 upgrade.

    Problem is not only while mounting partitions.
    Wherever we need authorization .Like changing date and time ,changing user accounts using gnome UI etc.The unlock button is greyed out permanently.
    even i am not able to shutdown using gnome menus. it just log me out only ,do not restart or shutdown.Though i can shutdown using shutdown command on commandline.

  • Cannot reinstall Tiger : installer stuck (cannot make disk bootable)

    Good afternoon experts,
    I am writing to you here as I have a problem with the Tiger installer which suddendly stops when trying to install on a prepartioned disk.
    First, some background information : I have a 20' iMac Intel machine which I bought on February 06 (well designed machine, happy with it so far). The thing is, I have had serious crashes and lockups using the UB version of VLC (media player) which led me to hard reboot the machine several times. Despite the journaling on the disk, some of my filesystem was corrupted, seemingly beyond repair (some apps did not even boot, nothing happened when I plugged in an external disk, etc). Scanning for disk errors and permissions problems revealed that a lot of files had been damaged ("extended allocation" error) in both the system and in my applications.
    As I did not know what to do (I should have asked first here whether it was possible to reinstall only parts of the OS using, maybe, a package manager), I synced my backups and went for a reinstall.
    The thing is, the disk is already partitioned, as I also run Linux on the machine (updated firmware and repartitioned the disk w/ BootCamp; worked well). It contains, in that order : the hidden EFI partition (fat32), the macOSX HFS+ volume (where I want to install), Linux swap partition, HFS+ partition (for use w/ rEFIt, the EFI bootloader), and two Linux ext3 partitions.
    The install starts fine (booting from the DVD which came with my machine), the macOSX volume is formatted but the installer just then stops. Looking at the logs, I can see that it is because it cannot make the volume bootable (this is what the error message says). Note that it correctly read the partition table/EFI partition scheme as it gives me the correct partition types I have presented above. Also note that I cannot do an "archive and install" procedure, seemingly because I have insufficient space (6GB free on the volume); the installer does not give me any choice. Finally, I can still boot into Linux holding the 'Alt' key and using the builtin volume chooser to start on the second HFS+ volume.
    I am asking for help to you gurus, to know what to do here. I was think maybe something like using the shell to do a manual 'bless' would solve the issue; I would like however to be sure before proceeding. Otherwise, is there a manual installation procedure (as there is for instance on the Debian installer, allowing to skip/redo some install steps)?
    Thanks for your help experts,
    Vincent
    PS: I am going to see whether I can collect the logs and post them here.

    Hello back,
    As I did not find a way to attach my logs, I am posting the most relevant parts of it here.

  • [SOLVED] Telling my BIOS/HD which partition to boot (GPT)

    I had Ubuntu dual booting with Mac OS X via grub2 on a GPT drive well.  That worked fine except that it was Ubuntu and while I love Ubuntu for many reasons, I do not love Ubuntu for productive development (apt...headers...name mangling...ok I'm not going to rant).
    I installed arch via live-usb net install like this:
    Boot of live usb
    Run parted
    --Delete Ubuntu partition
    --Make a 32MB ext2 partition  (#4)
    --Make a 6GB swap partition (#5)
    --Make a 15GB ext4 partition (#6) (wasnt sure if ext4 was ok for root but... i just went for it!)
    --Make a 250GB ext4 partition (#7)
    Run arch setup
    --In the choose blocks/config er whatever section I set the partitions as follows:
    ----4 -> /boot
    ----6 -> /
    ----7 -> /home
    Install packages
    Configure
    --SKIP bootloader
    Exit setup
    Run the following:
    $ mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
    $ chroot /mnt bash
    $ # dhcpcd and stuff to get online
    $ pacman -Sy grub2
    $ # Edit my grub.cfg (basically just copied the ubuntu one except replaced ubuntu's entry with arch's entry)
    $ reboot
    Get everyone's favorite message: Verifying dmi pool data...
    Reboot into the archlinux live usb and try the following
    $ parted
    $ set 1 boot off
    $ set 4 boot on
    $ quit
    $ reboot
    Back to: Verifying dmi pool data...
    While I'm not certain that Ubuntu wasn't doing something automagically to make gpt work smoothly for me this seems to my (not-very-knowledgeable) self like a reasonable approach, and thus my theory is that somehow the wrong partition is being attempted to be booted by my bios.  If it were at least trying to run the partition with grub I would suspect some sort of error message, not just hanging at "Verifying dmi pool data..."  This theory has made me realize that while I thought I sort of understood the bios->bootload hand off I, embarrassingly enough, have no idea how the boot partition is determined.  I think the bios just hands off to the HD, and the HD chooses which boot partition, but maybe the BIOS goes straight to a given partition?  Yup, no idea, hahah.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.  While I do of course have everything backed up the mac os x partition is 800GB and is using ~700, so restoring it would not only be a pain, but also potentially unreliable so I would much prefer advice that does not involve deleting/overwriting/reinstalling os x.
    Reinstalling Arch is no biggie (after all I've never booted successfully into this install;p).

    Why GRUB2?  Grub2 is still a bit experimental, probably have better luck with regular grub.
    I had read that regular grub did not play nice with GPT, and that in fact installing it may corrupt the partition table so I did not try it.  If this information is incorrect I would love to use it to at least get my system up and running, let me know.
    In your post, I don't see where you ran "grub-install". Just installing the GRUB package does not install a "bootloader", per se.
    I'd recommend reading the GRUB2 wiki article carefully, or as Gen2ly says, use GRUB "legacy".
    Thanks!  Ya... I did read that wiki, uh forgot to updated post when I tried grub install but: grub-install hangs when run after chrooting and nothing happens.  I swapped to another virtual terminal and checked out the process, it was doing nothing. So...
    Ubuntu 9.10 uses grub2, so I booted an ubuntu 9.10 live usb, mounted my /boot partition (sda4) to /mnt/boot ran
    $ grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
    Rebooting now got me past "Verifying dmi pool data"
    The grub menu was all messed up (only 1 option though I had 5 entries), and booting informed me that I need to load the kernel first, but I suspect this may just be a problem in my grub.cfg.  I had to head in to work though (Japan time) before I could poke around, but for now I'd say I'm no longer "stuck" (uh, maybe ;p).  Thanks for all the help!
    I'll be seeing if I can get my grub.cfg setup happily (or better yet set it up automagically from a live cd ) tonight.  Will set this so [SOLVED] and explain if I can.

    Sep 4 23:19:25 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Starting standard backup
    Sep 4 23:19:25 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Network mountpoint /Volumes/Backup not owned by backupd... remounting
    Sep 4 23:19:26 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Failed to remount network volume.
    Sep 4 23:19:31 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Backup failed with error: 19
    This is a network volume. It's a 750GB firewire drive, formatted HFS+ with a GUID partition table connected to an iMac. The iMac can back up just fine to it. My MBP cannot. It worked before.
    It appears it is failing to remount the drive as root rather than myself, as backupd runs as root. Others are having the same problem, and I've seen no resolution for this particular issue. Is Apple even aware of it? Do they even read the discussion forums?

    Paul,
    Give these ideas some condsideration:
    First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be found”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
    Give each topic separate consideration. If one does not resolve your issue, move on the next one.
    *Time Machine Has Lost Its’ Backup Disk*
    If Time Machine was NOT setup to recognize a hard disk for backup, and “Back up now” was selected from the Time Machine Dock icon, an error would report “No backup volume has been selected. To select a backup volume, open . . “ The Console log would report:
    +Backup failed with error: 17+
    But if Time Machine HAD BEEN setup to use a specific disk for backups, but if had lost its’ connection to the drive, it would report “The backup volume could not be mounted”. The Console log would say:
    +FSMatchAliasBulk returned -35 while resolving alias to backup target+
    +Backup failed with error: 19+
    When you check the Time Machine preferences you may see the name of your backup disk greyed-out and a generic hard drive icon beside it. More than likely this means Time Machine has lost is physical connection to the drive. Either the drive is not plugged in, it’s not turned ON, the drives’ cable is bad, the drives internal controller has failed, or the drive has a sleep function that is preventing it from waking when a backup is called for.
    *Airport Has Been Turned Off* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
    Look and the Airport menu at the top of the screen. Does it no longer display the radiating bands of wireless signal strength? The Airport has been turned off on this computer.
    Go to System Preferences.
    Select Network.
    Click “Turn Airport On”
    Now try backing up.
    *File Sharing Has Been Disabled* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Click "Manual Setup".
    Select "Disks" in the tool bar at top of window.
    Click "File Sharing".
    Verify that "Enable file sharing" is checked.
    If not, check it, click “Update”.
    Once the Time Capsule has finished restarting, close Airport Utility and try backing up again.
    *Password Has Changed/Become Corrupted* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
    [Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later: Time Machine - "Backup volume could not be mounted" after changing network volume's password]
    *Proper Computer Name* #
    Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
    According to THIS article [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
    Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
    Also, if the name of your backup devise contains any special characters (like an apostrophe) consider removing them and trying a backup again.
    Let is know if any of the ideas above helped.
    Cheers!

  • Just unlocked Blackberry Curve 8520 with online code, now cannot make calls or send sms! PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
    I unlocked my phone about an hour ago using a legitimate unlock code from unlocks.co.uk. I entered the code and it seemed to work fine and now my network shows up as Vodafone uk (I have unlocked it from T-Mobile)
    It looks as though it is unlocked and I have checked the connections - I have signal and it says I am connected to the vodafone network, however, I cannot make any calls or send texts! If I try to call a number I get the call failed signed and the failed call dial tone. I tried to send a text but it didn't work - the text now has a red X and says 'unidentified subscriber'. I know this is a fault with my phone as the people I have tried to text and call have no problems with their phones/networks.
    Please somebody help me! I have no idea what to do! I contacted the unlocking company and they say if I'm sure the sim I'm inserting is active (which I am) then it is likely my phone has been blacklisted, but I dont think it has. I bought it as a pay as you go handset from Argos just a week ago and it's been working fine until then.
    I put my old t-mobile sim back in and it seems to work - does this mean it hasn't been unlocked successfully or not?
    Many thanks

    Do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescribed for most glitches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
    Then try your Vodafone SIM again.

  • Can't Mount Windows Partition in OSX After Upgrading to 10.5 and BC 2.0

    I just installed Leopard today, using the upgrade option (as opposed to a clean install). I was happy to see that I could boot into Windows still, and installed all of the Boot Camp 2.0 drivers while booted into Vista. However, I can no longer mount my Windows partition in OSX. While using Tiger, I did use MacFuse and ntfs-3g to get read-write support, but in Leopard, I can't even read. When I try to mount the Windows volume in Disk Utility, I get an error stating that it cannot be mounted. I also do not have the option to perform "First Aid" or "Repair" on the volume.
    I realize that the latest version of ntfs-3g isn't proven to work with Leopard, but I would at least like read access in OSX. Is it possible that some settings were left over from my Tiger configuration that would not allow Leopard to mount the partition? Any ideas?
    Thank you.

    Ok. I'm in the club with the same problem...
    Strange things:
    * For the first days after Leopard's install, my BootCamp disk0s3 partition (I'll name it "BillGates") was mounted correctly. Then, after a few days (but BEFORE upgrading to 10.5.1), it disappeared.
    * If I launch DiskUtility "BillGates" is shown, but (in the right device navigation bar) it's named "-n BillGates". If I click the Erase menu, it's named "-nBillGates" (without the space between "-n" and "BillGates"). If I launch SystemProfiler it's named "-n BillGates", but the mount point is "/Volumes/billgates". Can't understand where this "-n" thing is coming from!
    * If I try to mount "-n BillGates" from DiskUtility it doesn't work and the log says "Mount of -n BillGates failed".
    * In the FSTAB there were no instructions: it was empty.
    Now, I tried the MacFUSE-solution: no results (meaning BillGates was not mounted on startup).
    I tried the modify-the-FSTAB-solution: no results (with "BillGates", "-n BillGates" nor "-nBillGates".
    I tried the chkdsk-solution: all tests were ok, but nothing happened.
    The only trick that worked was mounting the partition with Terminal's commands (thanks rtracy!!). It made appear "BillGates" on the desktop (without the "-n thing", that is still present in DiskUtility).
    Problem is at the first reboot, the Boot Camp partition disappears again. Any ideas for a permanent fix?!
    Giangiacomo.
    ADDENDUM: I've tried to move a file from desktop to an unlocked folder in BillGates and System did not copy them. "The item could not be moved because "BillGates" cannot be modified" !!!!!!!!

  • "Time machine error, The disk image cannot be mounted" What can I do??

    I ran the time machine. Then, "preparing backup" showed up for a long time. After that, a window pop out: "Time machine error, The disk image cannot be mounted" What is disk image? What can I do (I can't back up anything)
    P.S. I use time capsule for backup. there were no problem on connection

    I'm having the same issue. I do not have TC as my base station. It says right in the book that if you choose, you do not have to have it run as your router, just as a part of your existing wireless network. All software is up to date and I have already shortened the name of both my TC and TC disc to 6 characters and no spaces! I've already spoken with someone today about this. He really didn't know. Have tried backing up both wirelessly and directly connecting with an Ethernet cord. I had to finally call because when I attempted to register the product to get online support, apple.com didn't recognize the serial number!!! The gentleman on the phone got it registered for me. I bought the TC from an official apple store and for whatever reason when he put in the serial number his computer said that this TC was so "old" I guess that there was technically "no support." That basically means that even though my parents just purchased this for me a week before Christmas, that it was made a year ago and the warranty is not good?? I need to do more research on that. Right now I am very unhappy about this. I am a firm apple user and have been for years, but this is frustrating.
    I had read somewhere else (not sure I've been searching apple for what seems like forever now) to make sure that the TC was showing up in "devices" of the Finder. Mine doesn't show up there, but rather in the "Network" window. Is this an issue? If it is, can anyone tell me how to fix that. I have Time Machine backing up to my TC, so I do not see why it would be.
    UPDATE: I just opened up my TC on the "Shared" section of the Finder window and deleted the old "sparsebundle" (I had no clue that anything had backed up way back at 3:30pm on Dec 29) and now I get a slightly new message: Time Machine Error: The backup disc image could not be created." So now the word "mounted" is replaced with "created." This error showed up a lot sooner than the original one. Ok, no clue. I am going to try to Change the Disc again, and try again. I will post another update.

  • Time Capsule disk cannot be mounted

    I use Time Machine to back up wirelessly to a 1TB Time Capsule. This has worked flawlessly until recently. (I bought the TC in late August 2008.)
    Now, I get an error message that the backup disk cannot be mounted.
    I cannot see the TC disk in Disk Utility, so I cannot run any disk repair there.
    The only way that I have found that I can solve the problem is to disconnect the TC from the power supply, reconnect after a few seconds, and let the TC reboot. This repairs the problem for about 24 hours, and then it fails to mount again.
    Any and all help/suggestions/advice gratefully received. I've also posted this in the OS 10.5 Time Machine forum.
    Thanks, John

  • Lucreate - „Cannot make file systems for boot environment“

    Hello!
    I'm trying to use LiveUpgrade to upgrade one "my" Sparc servers from Solaris 10 U5 to Solaris 10 U6. To do that, I first installed the patches listed on [Infodoc 72099|http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-9-72099-1] and then installed SUNWlucfg, SUNWlur and SUNWluufrom the S10U6 sparc DVD iso. When I try to remove the incomplete S10U6_20081207 BE, I get yet another error :(

    lucreate used to work fine, "once upon a time", when I brought the system from S10U4 to S10U5.
    Would anyone maybe have an idea about what's broken there?

    HI
    i restored a sharepoint web 80 application in our test domain

    it says
    Cannot make a cache safe URL for "1025/styles/Themable/corev4.css", file not found. Please verify that the file exists under the layouts directory.
    adil

    Hi  adil,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you encountered the error “Cannot make a cache safe URL for "1025/styles/Themable/corev4.css", file not found. Please verify that the file
    exists under the layouts directory.” .
    The issue happens in
    We have customized master page
    In the master page, we use path the script/style file like this: <SharePoint:CssRegistration name="<% $SPUrl:~SiteCollection/Style Library/coe/mainCOE.css%>"
    runat="server"/>
    While using the dynamic path in a multiple languages enabled site, language Id(1033 etc) will be added to the path automatically. That cause the file to be not found.
    To solve the issue, please download  the Arabic language pack http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3411 ,
    install it on  your SharePoint and refresh your browser.
